Cats In Art
GROUP EXHIBITION
“Time spent with a cat is never wasted.”
Collette
“That is the great secret of creativity. You treat
ideas like cats: You make them follow you.”
Robert Heinlein
“You cannot look at a sleeping cat and feel tense.”
Jane Pauley
Cats were the first domesticated animal to be deified
and thus worshipped by people as the earthly
representative of a higher consciousness.
Cats in all their physical grace and mysterious ways
have been the centrepiece of artworks for millennia.
Cats are the one domesticated creature that retains its
essentially wild nature.
As a companion piece to 2017’s wildly popular Dogs
In Art, Backspace Gallery opens its winter season
with Cats In Art - an exhibition that invites local and
regional artists to move beyond the ‘cute kitten video’
and to delve into our relationship with the companion
that chooses us, rather than the other way around.
49 artists heeded that call, resulting in a body of
work in all media that celebrates the many ways that
cats are depicted in contemporary art – realistic,
abstracted, serious and playful.
As an open-entry show, Cats In Art features
emerging artists alongside mid-career and established
practitioners, providing a unique opportunity for visitors
to experience a range of artistic visions, approaches
and styles.
Complementing Cats In Art, the Exquisite Project
Space (in the Backspace Gallery foyer) has issued its
own invitation to the general community to contribute
more dubious manifestations of feline-aphilia to the
display Kitty Kitty Kitsch. From Little Cat’s Feet
Bedroom Slippers to Hello Kitty! Coin Purses to
Little Kitty Onesies, this adjunct to Cats In Art is a
humorous signal that cats will always be with us.
Backspace Gallery is an initiative of the City of Ballarat Arts
and Culture Unit,
dedicated to supporting local and regional artists by
exhibiting quality contemporary visual art, design and craft.
Located in historic Huyghue House:
When I Grow Up: SHEILAS
The community art collective SHEILAS –
Strong, Honest, Exceptional and Inspirational
Lady Artists – comes to Backspace Gallery 26
July – 12 August), bringing work by a range of
women artists drawn from the spectrum of art
practice and experience.
Encouraging and supporting all women in the
process of art-making, the group show When
I Grow Up examines the journeys of women
of all ages exploring the ideals of freedom and
equality. Confronting marginalisation in the arts,
in the workplace, and in the domestic realm,
When I Grow Up traces the stories of women
artists working to achieve what they envisioned
as ‘grown up’ work – begging the question, Do
we or will we ever know?
SHEILAS is dedicated to providing its members
space to use art making to find their inner fire,
express their inner conversations, and delve into
personal experiences as a process of lifelong
learning.
Attracting over 35 artists, When I Grow Up is a
multidisciplinary celebration of women’s creativity
in photography, sculpture, tapestry, weaving,
printing, printmaking, and digital art.
But while this exhibition has a specific gender
focus, it is more importantly a showcase for
how the creation of art encourages people of all
identities to push their boundaries, seek selfexpression,
and pursue excellence in practice.
Backspace Gallery is an initiative of the City of Ballarat Arts
New public artwork to enhance community engagement at
Cardigan Village Community Centre
20 June 2018
Victorian artist Katherine Masiulanis has been chosen to create a public artwork piece for the Cardigan
Village Community Centre.
The artwork will be located in the community centre’s courtyard and is aimed at enhancing the look and feel of the
courtyard to encourage more people to use the space.
The public art project will reflect on the local stories of Cardigan Village and on the community’s social and cultural
diversity through the creation of a welcoming new space for community use.
Masiulanis has designed the public artwork to reflect the geological and volcanic history of the area - Cardigan Village
is located on an outcrop of ancient Silurian sandstone within the volcanic plain.
The artwork also refers to the seasonal travel of Aboriginal people from Wendouree to Burrumbeet and migratory
birds making a similar journey.
The style of the refurbished courtyard will reflect the 1970s-style reflected in the Community Centre architectural
design and the history of the first development of the ‘Village’.
The artwork is expected to be installed by the end of October.
Background:
The Cardigan Village Community Centre was given a new lease of life in 2017 following feedback from the
community.
The recent upgrades provide better access, more open space, new kitchen and toilet facilities and improve the
current facility’s aesthetics.
This upgrade was funded through the City of Ballarat’s Engaging Communities Program – Cardigan Village.
The centre provides a vital space for the community to connect, play, socialise and celebrate, and will now be more
responsive to the needs of the growing Cardigan Village community.
Upon completion of the facility, the Cardigan Village Community Centre Committee of Management expressed a
desire to work with the City of Ballarat on a public art project to enhance the courtyard space of the building and
increase community interest and engagement with the centre.
It is expected the new public artwork will provide these further opportunities for community interaction.
This $40,000 public artwork project is funded through the City of Ballarat Public Art Program and a community
contribution of $20,000 each.
Local poet’s literary work now on display at
Little Bridge Street Pocket Park
June 2018
Shoppers can now view the literary work of local poet Nathan Curnow at the Little Bridge Street Pocket Park.
Mr Curnow was selected to create a public display of his literary works, which includes four poems portraying life in
urban Ballarat, drawing inspiration from the local identities, sights and sounds of the site of the Pocket Park.
The poems inscribed onto seats were installed at the Little Bridge Street Pocket Park recently. They read:
Put it all down and take a seat
Pull out a snack from your shopping
Listen to the trumpeter busking a tune
With every visit this park is growing
Killing time takes real devotion
Stare at the flags and masts of your town
And the buses coming rolling down Bakery Hill
It may be cold but we lean to the sun
If you feel like a square of the Eureka Flag
That’s hopelessly lost and tattered
Remember you’re as precious as a corner piece
We search for you first to get started
There is something big on Little Bridge
Not a beanstalk that leads to a giant
But another day in the life of Ballarat
All of this gold at the surface
Background:
The City of Ballarat’s Public Art Advisory Committee worked with the Ballarat Writer’s Festival to select the final
poems using a ‘blind selection’ method.
The Little Bridge Street Pocket Park project forms part of the transformation of the Little Bridge Street precinct, aimed
at encouraging community use and improving safety in the area.
The Little Bridge Street Pocket Park project will strengthen community connection and engagement with the site,
improve facilities and increase safety in the area.
The Little Bridge Street Pocket Park project is funded by the Victorian Government Community Crime Prevention
Program and the City of Ballarat.
$160,000 announced for regional artists and communities in Victoria
Fourteen projects in Victoria have received $160,000 in funding through the Australian Government’s highly competitive Regional Arts Fund,
delivered in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.
Director of Partnerships at Regional Arts Victoria, Liz Zito, said that the projects would contribute greatly to the creative activity occurring
across the state throughout the year.
Local Projects include:
Lynden Nicholls
Facing Up
Facing Up is a continuous sound installation commenting on prime ministerial statements concerning the status and well-being of Australia’s
Indigenous population from federation to the present day. Issues such as land rights, citizenship and treaty are revealed. It will take place
along Ballarat’s avenue of prime ministers in the botanical gardens bringing the statues to life. Opening and closing performances will
involve Indigenous and non-Indigenous actors and dancers along with a smoking ceremony and welcome to country. Facing Up is a part of
the Biennale of Australian Art held in Ballarat for six weeks from 21 September 2018
Spa Country Events Group Inc.
The Mosquito: Community Storytelling
The Mosquito is dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Modelled on story slams, ‘The Moth’ in New York and ABC’s ‘Now Hear This’,
the series is unique in aiming to tell the story of the local community by focusing the slam themes to elicit the story of the Hepburn Shire.
Storytelling workshops will be conducted by local storyteller Anne E Stewart and offered to community groups and individuals to help prepare
their stories. These workshops will be followed by storytelling heats, run over 10 consecutive Thursdays culminating in an event to choose
the “Mosquito” winner. The stories would be recorded for podcast and vidcast.
Kirsten Bradley
Why Listen to Bees?
A new collaboration between permaculture educators ‘Milkwood’ (Nick Ritar and Kirsten Bradley) and national sound art organisation ‘Liquid
Architecture’, Why Listen to Bees is a sound art project exploring the world of the honeybee. As apiarists, Milkwood’s daily observation of
their beehive provides complex insights into health, mood and sociality of their bees via the sounds of the hive. Using this ‘bee listening’ as
an artistic point of departure, this project stages an array of listening encounters - music, lecture-performances, poetry and soundwalks - in a
sonic investigation of bees in Hepburn
Glenlyon Progress Association
Nature devours art
In this project the relationship of art to its environment will be explored and ecological awareness will be created, by fusing human creativity
and natural surroundings. An artist-in-residence (Jodie Goldring) and an environmental education consultant (Nicole Howie) will be employed
to lead the community in identifying and gathering indigenous and exotic plants growing alongside the riparian zone of the Loddon River.
Under their guidance, the community will work together to create impermanent eco-sculptures and structures using natural and found
objects. The works are intended to be gradually absorbed back into the landscape by the elements.
Congratulations to all of the recipients, and we look forward to seeing these outcomes over the next twelve months.
If you have an idea for a project that requires funding to get it going, give Malcolm a call on (03) 5320 5888 or 0412 459 471 to discuss your
idea.
in 2017. Much of Evans’s current practice involves combining original
19th century heritage objects including photographs, furniture and
decorative arts with craft processes such as beading and needlepoint.
The processes employed in this work, symbolic of both personal
and universal histories, are combined to unsettle traditional
understandings of ownership, memory and identity. By placing them
in a classic Victorian environment the work can be seen in context,
unstitching our understanding of a ‘civilised’ past.
Evans will present an Artist Talk on Saturday 2 June at 2pm.
Parlour is not intended as a reflection or comment on members of the
Lindsay family, their personal histories or artistic practice, but takes
advantage of the installation of a typical nineteenth parlour in a gallery
context.
‘Wow!’ And ‘Look at that!’ - Excited statements that express the
joy that rings out when artists Anne Chibnall and Tim Sedgwick are
making art with mentors Sarah Lloyd and Geoff Bonney in art HALL
Learmonth.
Although sharing keen interest in each other’s work, their practice is
separate. Tim makes wonderful found-object sculpted creatures and
Anne creates bountiful and colourful paintings of flowers.
The two are longtime friends and colleagues, with large catalogues of
work behind them.
This exhibition of painting and sculpture promises to be a WOW!
RECENT ACQUISITIONS 2018
Sat 17 Feb to Sun 2 Sep
Visit the Gallery to see works which have come into the collection
in the past two years which have, by and large, not been put out on
public display before. The Gallery has a wide collecting brief, but its
main focus is on paintings, works on paper and sculpture.
Many of these works are gifts, while others have been purchased with
funds left by bequest to the Gallery.
Over the duration of this exhibition, parts of the display will be
refreshed with new works, so plan a repeat visit if you wish to
see more of what the Gallery has been collecting. Other recent
acquisitions can be seen on display in the galleries upstairs.
An Art Gallery of Ballarat exhibition
Sat 23 Jun to Sun 9 Sep
In the mid-nineteenth century, France was the acknowledged centre of the art
world, as realist styles of painting were challenged by Impressionism. With
the advent of photography many artists worked to imitate nature, finding new
ways of to celebrate light and colour as spontaneous ‘impressions’.
This exhibition of treasures from the Musee de la Chartreuse, the regional
gallery for Douai in northern France, traces these developments. It ranges
from the idealised classical imagery of the late eighteenth century, romantic
seascapes and tranquil landscapes depicting the mills and canals of northern
France, through to paintings which celebrate the effects of pure light and
colour, and works which explore the lives of ordinary people, rarely seen in
earlier painting.
Renovations to the Chartreuse building have created a unique opportunity for
Australian audiences to see sixty nineteenth and twentieth-century gems from
this outstanding French gallery, alongside key paintings by Australian artists
working in France and discovering the same traditions, and works by French
artists from Australian collections.
Special guided tours will be available every Saturday and Sunday during the
run of the exhibition and for group visits by arrangement.
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
ALDONA KMIEC
July 2 - August 3
The Art of Activism is an epic one-day roadtrip
story to the Far East corner of Victoria
to photograph a commissioned editorial for
Gippslandia Magazine. Together with local
journalist Mim Cook, on a 38C day, we drove
her rusty old Saab to Combienbar, where
another beat up Land Cruiser from the 80s
would take us to Granite Mountain, where we
visit the blockade in the State Forest, the area
zoned for logging. Read the story published
DAVID MELLOWS
June 9 - August 19
Opening Thursday, 12 July 2018 at 6pm
Having this opportunity to hang in a large
room with a vast wall is perfect to bring out
some of the large works by David Mellows
of the past decade. Local sourced images
are alongside those of travels, interstate and
international.
The painting technique remains from that
evolved after attaining a Diploma in Art &
Design, Printmaking Major, at Midland TAFE
in WA. That was stabilized through being able
to hang in commercial galleries in Melbourne
after moving to Victoria in 2000. The CV of
regional art prizes was further enhanced
and good sales meant the product spread
about Melbourne, Victoria, interstate and
overseas. The scale of work and sales was
complete with small to the panoramic and
multi-panelled works the like included in this
showing.
Themes also evolved through the decade
of success in Melbourne and that is well
represented here also. Most are from what
is seen with the enhancement or diminution
of the artists’ licence. The crowdscenes are
purely invention even though many have
claimed knowledge of some characters. In
this is the example most appreciated by the
artist. When the viewers tell their own story as
told in the painting.
David Mellows now lives in Creswick and
though winters can be cool, the colours of the
seasons change are enjoyed.
STEVE SEDGWICK
4 JULY - AUGUST 5
Steve Sedgwick is a Ballarat based artist who
sees more than landscape. In his series Painted
Land, Steve celebrates the complex colours and
ever-changing nature of the Australian natural
landscape. He slowly reduces the elements down
to their constituent parts of tone and shape and
colour until they barely resemble the landscape
that inspired them. Steve paints in the open
air, which gives each paint stroke a sense of
place and time. He also works within the studio,
taking the memories and fragments back to his
enclosed environment and working his pieces
into distinct abstracts. His confidence of mark
making brings to mind Fred Williams and Arthur
Streeton.
and improve their photography, regardless of their level of competence.
Since its establishment in 1938, members of the Ballarat Camera Club Inc. have encouraged and inspired each other in their
photographic pursuits and personal growth. Depending on the needs of members, committee and key club members organise a
variety of activities which facilitate the learning of the many aspects of photography.
Sean Penn is bizarrely endearing as Cheyenne, an aging rock/Goth star
living in Ireland who is prompted by his father’s death to embark on a
picaresque journey across America - ostensibly to hunt down a Nazi war
criminal. However, the film doesn’t allow itself, or us, to be too hung up on
this goal, being driven by a whimsical relish for the absurd and the everyday
alike.
Frances McDormand plays Cheyenne’s wife/ soul-mate (who is also a
firefighter), while a passing parade of characters includes David Byrne (lead
singer of the band Talking Heads) and the inventor of the wheeled suitcase,
Robert Plath.
Looking for a shared experience with other lovers of words and ideas?
WORD BANQUET* meets at the magnificent Ballarat Mechanics Institute for
about an hour and a half at 7.00 pm on the 2nd Wednesday of each month,
March to November.
Come along to read and listen to poetry, prose, plays - a different word form
each month. There’ll be themes. Read work you love - yours or someone else’s
- or join moderated big conversations on a topic we’ll post beforehand so you
can think about it.
IMPORTANT: Want to read on a particular night? Look out for the Facebook
EVENT PAGE for that date, and add your name in the comments. If you
forget, you can add your name to a list at the BMI on the night and you can
read if there’s time. Count on up to five minutes, maybe more, depending how
many of us are there.
Word Banquet. ‘Letters: The Lives of Others’
Let’s read letters aloud. Let’s talk about them. Bring letters you’ve kept, or
for tantalising glimpses of other lives, find letters that excite or intrigue you
among anthologised letters or letters found online*. Remember receiving
letters? When you were in swift sensory relationship with the sender before
even reading it? A tongue moistened the envelope’s line of fastening glue, soft
breath whispered over the paper’s surface, warm fingers left DNA traces now
mingling with yours. And folded within, trembling among the words, invisible
messages ripe for decoding (we’ll decode in our discussions)-people always
reveal more than they intend. Join our table and reignite your enthusiasm for
letters-we all miss them! Readings up to 5 minutes each round-if unsure, do a
little pre-event timing.
*BYO snacks and drinks. We’ll kick on over the road at The Lost Ones
Basement Bar after 8.30 to 9.00-ish if we have more to say. Entry by gold coin
donation to cover operational costs.
*Letters of the famous right here: http://www.lettersofnote.com/p/archive.html
Examples to get you thinking.
NICK CAVE TO MTV: “I feel that it’s necessary for me to request that my
nomination for best male artist be withdrawn and furthermore any awards
or nominations for such awards that may arise in later years be presented to
those who feel more comfortable with the competitive nature of these award
ceremonies. I myself, do not. I have always been of the opinion that my music
is unique and individual and exists beyond the realms inhabited by those who
would reduce things to mere measuring. I am in competition with no-one.”
VIRGINIA WOOLF TO VITA SACKVILLE-WEST: “Look here Vita-throw
over your man, and we’ll go to Hampton Court and dine on the river together
and walk in the garden in the moonlight and come home late and have a bottle
of wine and get tipsy, and I’ll tell you all the things I have in my head, millions,
myriads -They won’t stir by day, only by dark on the river. Think of that. Throw
over your man, I say, and come.”
MARILYN MONROE: ‘Last night I was awake all night again. Sometimes I
wonder what the night time is for. It almost doesn’t exist for me’it all seems like
one long, long horrible day.’
TED HUGHES’ TO DAUGHTER FRIEDA: “T.S. Eliot said to me ‘There’s
only one way a poet can develop his actual writing - apart from self-criticism
& continual practice. And that is by reading other poetry aloud - and it doesn’t
matter whether he understands it or not (i.e. even if it is in another language.)
What matters, above all, is educating the ear’.”
Sweet Mona’s Choir, based in Ballarat, Australia, is one of Victoria’s
leading, and longest running, gospel and world music choirs.
The choir was born organically in mid-nineties, when an enterprising
teacher used choral singing as an innovative way to teach voice skills in
a performing arts course. Sweet Mona’s has evolved over time, with the
complexity and variety of arrangements increasing as the choir reached a
professional standard that surpassed its original purpose.
Sweet Mona’s Choir focuses on a Capella and rhythm and performs a
broad range of contemporary, world and gospel music, including music
from the Staple Singers and the Golden Gate Quartet. Expertly directed
by multi-instrumentalist, renowned percussionist and vocalist Stella Savy
(Los Locos, Ballarat Ska Union), their sound ranges from a rich, deep
resonance to a lively, energetic tone, to haunting melodies that stay with
you long after the performance is over. Sweet Mona’s Choir are also
famous for their world-class arrangements, created by Barry Deenick
(Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Bustamento), Stella Savy and more. The
choir has also been privileged to work with some of the best musicians
on the Australian and international music scene, including Venetta Fields,
Mal Webb, Tony Backhouse, Hugh Masekela, Valanga Khoza, Andrea
Khoza and Vika & Linda Bull. Sweet Monaís Choir has performed at
a huge range of venues including music festivals from Apollo Bay to
Brunswick, from churches, weddings and community events to Federation
Square in the heart of Melbourne.
Comprising 30-40 singers, from a diverse range of backgrounds and
ages, countless people from the community have enjoyed, and benefited
from, performing with the choir over the past 20 odd years. Each member
offers something different to the choir, keeping Sweet Mona’s Choir a
colourful and lively human music machine!
AUDITION
Want to audition? Read on
Places in the choir are very limited. When we audition, we are looking for
a combination of factors- the ability to hold and match pitches, blending
and balancing your voice with others, the ability to clap and step in time
and the ability to be a proactive member of a group.
Please note: Rehearsal is held Tuesday nights (in Ballarat) 7-9pm during
school terms and is mandatory. Choir members are expected to be
available for gigs throughout the year.
*Don’t be alarmed if you don’t hear from us for a long time, we usually
only hold auditions once a year!
We will email you when we are holding auditions. Your details will be held
safely in our database!
MINI MONA’S CHOIR
The Mini Mona’s are a community children’s choir who perform a Capella
and accompanied contemporary, world and gospel music. Singing these
styles of music opens avenues of understanding and appreciation of other
culture’s musical styles, languages, attitudes and perspectives. Children
of any age and ability are welcomed and given the opportunity to sing,
create and perform!
Ballarat’s longest-running community choir, BCS has a focus on
classical work with regular explorations of more contemporary works.
Founded over one hundred years ago, BCS maintains a friendly
community feel and a high standard of singing. We are a small choir with
a big sound, a collective of people who are passionately committed to
singing great music, and doing it well. With the support of our talented
Musical Director, Helen Duggan, we are known for our beautiful renditions
of the classics - from Mozart to Beethoven and beyond - and our
exploration of the lighter side of music. Please join us on our vibrant
musical journey, as an audience member, a supporter or a chorister.
Mr Bailey’s Minder
Ballarat National Theatre
• 7th July Gala Night
• 8th July Sunday Matinee
• 11th – 13th July Wednesday to Friday 8 pm
• 14th July Saturday Matinee
The play centres around Leo Bailey, one of Australia’s greatest
living artists, whose genius battles to survive the effects of alcohol,
cynicism and self-loathing, can no longer take care of himself. His
resentful daughter has been through a succession of minders, until
Therese comes along, fresh out of prison and determined to make a
go of her limited options.
Mr Bailey’s Minder is a tough, funny and big-hearted play. It’s
about shame and judgment, about who deserves to be loved and
forgiven. It looks at how people exploit each other and where they
find the beauty; and the qualities of transcendence, letting go and
forgiveness.
“Like her character Leo Bailey, playwright Debra Oswald reveals
the luminous inner beauty of ordinary men and women emotionally
scarred by life.” - Mark Hopkins, Sydney Morning Herald
Mr Bailey’s Minder by Debra Oswald (2005) won the Griffin award
for best new Australian play and broke box office records during its
WHAT IS BALLARAT EVOLVE?
Ballarat Evolve is a trial program supported by the Ballarat Arts Foundation. This program is investigating the sustainability of
linking private businesses with micro-creative enterprises and artists, and permitting access to empty retail spaces throughout the
regional city’s central business district - focusing on fast tracking the city’s evolution.
WHAT IS THE REASON FOR BALLARAT EVOLVE?
Taking learnings from the hugely successful Renew Newcastle and Renew Australia initiatives, and relying upon the advice and
guidance of Arts Law Centre of Australia, Ballarat Evolve was borne out of genuine interest from local traders. Interested groups
started to notice the changing profile of the inner city streets, and a private initiative was undertaken. Volunteers logged empty
retail environments in a selected area of the CBD, noting those buildings highlighted with a ‘For Lease’, ‘For Sale’ and those which
were clearly empty. This was matched with attitudinal research of 220 individuals living, using and working in the heart of the city.
“62% of people believe there are fewer people shopping in the heart of Ballarat compared to a year ago.”
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
“87% of those who live and work in Ballarat believe that there are many empty shops in the heart of the city.”
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
WHY IS THE BALLARAT ARTS FOUNDATION INVOLVED?
The Ballarat Arts Foundation was approached with the concept to support a trial, investigating the feasibility of placing creative arts
practitioners and small businesses into identified empty retail environments. Ballarat Arts Foundation, as the city’s primary grantmaker
to the creative and arts community, has agreed to support the project’s trial till the end of December 2018. The Ballarat
Arts Foundation will assess applicants, and coordinate the profiling matching of applicants to suitable locations in conjunction with
the landlords and their representative agents. It is hoped that following the review period, the program will be established as an
ongoing concern.
WHO ELSE IS INVOLVED?
Ballarat Evolve is supported by a range of different private bodies, including real estate agents Colliers International and legal
teams offering their services pro-bono.
“56% of respondents disagree that the centre of Ballarat is vibrant and lively.””
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
“84% of people in Ballarat believe that empty retail shops should be made available to micro-businesses and enterprises.
”
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
APPLYING TO BE A PART OF THE BALLARAT EVOLVE TRIAL
FOR ARTISTS
We are currently seeking creative industries, artists and makers to put themselves forward for consideration. The trial will be small
and tightly managed, so we would encourage you not to be disappointed should you not be successful on this occasion. Please
submit your Expression of Interest, and we will coordinate interviews and appointments with those who are successful.
FOR LANDLORDS
We are seeking submissions from landlords with properties in the Ballarat Central region that have proven difficult to lease. We
seek the support of property owners who have vacant buildings to make them available for this project trial, adding them to our
existing list of properties under consideration.
About the Rattle Poetry Prize
The annual Rattle Poetry Prize offers $10,000 for a single
poem to be published in the winter issue of the magazine.
Ten finalists will also receive $200 each and publication,
and be eligible for the $2,000 Readers’ Choice Award, to be
selected by subscriber and entrant vote.
Additional poems from the entries are frequently offered
publication as well. In 2017 we published 20 poems that had
been submitted to the contest from just over 4,000 entries.
With the winners judged in an anonymous review by the
editors to ensure a fair and consistent selection, an entry fee
that is simply a one-year subscription to the magazine - and
a large Readers’ Choice Award to be chosen by the writers
themselves - we’ve designed the Rattle Poetry Prize to be
one of the most inspiring contests around.
Past winners have included a retired teacher, a lawyer, and
several students. It’s fair, it’s friendly, and you win a print
subscription to Rattle even if you don’t win.
With One Voice Social Franchise Start-Up Funding
https://www.creativityaustralia.org.au/choirs/start
Start-up Funding Overview
Creativity Australia is building a happier, healthier, more inclusive nation, through the neuro-scientific benefits of community singing. The With
One Voice Social Franchise program is about building supportive networks, strengthening diverse communities and inspiring individuals to find
their voice.
Together, we can change the world… one voice at a time. With One Voice choirs are led by professional conductors, rehearse weekly followed by
supper and perform at community and corporate events.
To make it easier for communities to start their own choir, Creativity Australia is offering a limited number of start-up funding grants of up
to $10,000. Successful applicants will receive the start-up grant and join a 12-month intensive mentoring program to guide them through the
process of building their own With One Voice Social Franchise choir.
Success is determined by our unique “Health of Choirs” indicators that measure member engagement and participation through our personalised
program App. During the first six months one of our program staff will mentor the organizing committee to interpret the indicators and use them
to focus their efforts to lay a strong foundation for the choir to succeed, be socially inclusive and build community wellbeing and inspirational
outcomes for participants.
How the With One Voice Social Franchise program works
With One Voice Social Franchise programs are set up and ran by local volunteers using the resources and materials provided by Creativity
Australia. By establishing a local community choir under the auspices of Creativity Australia (as a registered charity) you hold a licence that
enables the choir to raise funds to support projects and initiatives at a local level. The choir is set up as an unincorporated association under the
umbrella of Creativity Australia. This includes an independent bank account which is jointly managed by the local choir volunteers and Creativity
Australia.
There are seven key components to the With One Voice Social Franchise program:
1. bringing together a diverse range of local community individuals and organisations to promote, commence and participate in the
program
2. finding an extraordinary music leader (who is empathetic and inspiring)
3. finding a safe, nurturing space to sing (that is accessible and close to public transport or infrastructure)
4. seeking out diversity (all are welcome…all ages, backgrounds and cultures...no auditions)
5. showcasing your choir … share the love (perform locally, celebrate accomplishments)
6. nurturing social connections (rehearse weekly, share supper, share the “Wish List”)
7. building sustainability (develop community & business connections, recruit some helpers, start fund raising).
Priority
Funding is not prioritized for any particular group or type of organisation, however, there is a set of criteria that applicants must meet. Please see
the information pack that can be downloaded from the website for more information
Limitations.
The organising committees of With One Voice Social Franchise Choirs must represent the community and applications will be assessed based
on their diversity and/or plan to achieve diversity. If you would like assistance on whether or not your group or organisation would be suitable to
help establish a With One Voice Social Franchise choir, please contact Creativity Australia. Please note, local and state government are not eligible
to apply.
Future/Forward
14 - 15 August 2018
National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House
This year’s Federal Budget disappointed the nation in failing to offer a vision for championing and strengthening Australia’s
contemporary arts.
That means it’s up to us.
Future/Forward will ignite the nation’s capital with timely collaboration on how best to advance rights, sustain incomes and
develop practice in Australia today.
NAVAís been giving a lot of thought to exactly this question. At Future/Forward, we’re going to launch the commitments
we’re making to the sector through our new Strategic Plan. And top of our list is the Code of Practice for the Professional
Australian Visual Arts, Craft and Design Sector.
What needs to go into the updated Code? How do we make that Code enforceable? How will we create policy change,
redress inequity and take action together?
Our first day at the National Gallery of Australia will focus on negotiating the institutional aspects of professional practice.
Our second day at Parliament House will focus on the politics of policy change. Each day will offer a blend of talks,
hypotheticals, scenarios, games and case studies that get us thinking actively.
We welcome artists to attend, participate and lead new conversations. Abdul Abdullah, Fiona Foley, Patricia Piccinini, Peter
White and pvi collective are confirmed so far.
We welcome organisational, government and philanthropic leaders to join us and participate actively.
Whether you’re joining us in Canberra or online, we’re planning two days of focused artistic thinking for creative action.
Travel Subsidies
With thanks to our colleagues at the various state government arts agencies, NAVA has secured travel subsidies to
support artists’ attendance. At this stage, subsidies are available for Queensland, South Australian, Western Australian and
Victorian artists. We are working on securing funding for other states.
We are looking to support artists who will directly benefit from attending Future/Forward and who demonstrate an active
engagement in the arts sector.
You must be a NAVA Premium or Premium Plus Member to apply. Sign up to become a Member here:
