Facts about Danish offshore
Oil & Gas and Offshore Wind
Denmark has been active in the offshore
business for more than 40 years. The fi rst
oil discovery in the North Sea was done in
1966 by Dansk Undergrunds Consortium.
Production was initiated in 1972, and since
then production has increased and technology
has been dramatically improved.
Within offshore wind, Denmark has also
been pioneering the sector. The fi rst offshore
wind farm in the world was erected
in 1992, near Vindeby in south Denmark,
Since then, hundreds of additional offshore
wind turbines have been erected in Danish
waters, and Danish wind turbines have been
sold to many countries around the world.
The following section presents facts and
fi gures for the current status of the Danish
offshore sector - oil and gas as well as wind.
Figures are from 2007, and yearly fi gures
are for the year 2006.
Offshore Oil and Gas
• In 1993, the amount of oil produced in
Denmark reached a level equivalent to
the consumption. In 2000 it was twice the
size of the consumption
Danish Oil and Gas Production
• Denmark is expected to be self-suffi cient
in oil production for at least another 20-
30 years
• Approximately half of the surplus in
government fi nances comes from oil and
gas production
