Decommissioning
Development Project
For more than 10 years a group of companies,
consultants, educational institutions and
politicians in Esbjerg has made sincere efforts
to enable the Port of Esbjerg to take part in the
interesting decommissioning market (abandoning
of used offshore constructions).
These efforts culminated October 11th 2007,
where an international conference on the
issues was held at Musikhuset in Esbjerg. The
conference Decom 2007 placed focus on the
environmental areas concerning techniques
and economy. Find the conference presentations

Focus areas in the Decommissioning
Development project were:
• Economy – cheapest and best technical
solution
• Health
• Safety
• Environment
• Quality
Valuable lessons have been learned through
the Decommissioning Development project:
• Inverse installation techniques using crane
and barge is the best removal technique
• Decommissioning of offshore constructions
are high-technology projects and includes
an extreme amount of engineering
hours on:
– Planning and design of the technique
– Planning and design of the environ-
mental and health matters
– Control and inspection of technique as
well as environmental and health matters
• Subcontracting on large foreign decommissioning
projects is an interesting option
• Removal of steel and large constructions in
the operation phase of offshore production
is an interesting option.
This includes Rig Repair where tons of
used steel are removed and recycled
• The ongoing work on Environmental
Impact Assessment (EIA/VVM) is an important
and invaluable step on decommissioning
in the Port of Esbjerg

• Man hours on manual work in decommissioning
are less than expected
The Decommissioning Development Project
is currently in the commercialization phase.
These efforts are placed in a group of interested
developers and fi rms. But the project is
still situated in Esbjerg - Denmark’s Offshore
City - with its particular advantages.

The DECOM 2007 conference was
attended by close to 100 people.
