Yearbook 2008
Looking for Partners
in Western Africa
With Danish offshore companies present in
Nigeria and in Angola, Western Africa is
gaining increasing attention these years.
Since 2005 Maersk Oil has been active
offshore Angola, and in June 2005, Maersk
Oil acquired a production sharing agreement
for Block 16 approximately 100 km
offshore coast of Angola. More licenses
have been acquired by Maersk Oil since,
and as the neighbouring blocks have been
very successful in their search, expectations
are quite high to these licenses. The water
depths are in the range of 200-1,500 meter,
and Maersk Oil will once again require
all of their combined expert knowledge to
produce oil from these large water depths.
The fi rst results are expected to be released
in 2008.
Valuable knowledge
Nigeria, being a long-time oil producer, is
now also moving offshore. External assistance
is required with this new focus, and
Danish suppliers now have the opportunity
to share the project development risk and
the fi nanzing with IFU – The Industrialization
Fund for Developing Countries.
- During the past 20-30 years the Danish offshore
industry has proven itself on the North
Sea, and this knowledge is very valuable
offshore West Africa, where the conditions
are at least as challenging as in the North
Sea, Kasper Svarrer states, Investment
Manager in IFU.
- IFU has asked Offshore Center Danmark
to prepare a market analysis for Danish
offshore companies wishing to enter the
Angolan and the Nigerian markets, respectively.
Following our site visits interviewing
more than 40 companies and institutions in
these countries, we fi nd that these African
markets are now ready to receive further
assistance from Danish suppliers. The oil reserves
offshore Western Africa are proving
huge, and the time is now right for a market
penetration for suppliers within selected
market segments, which have been identifi ed
in our reports available through IFU, Peter
Blach states.
Towards new horizons
Danish know-how is also a commodity
in high demand on the Brazilian offshore
market. Danish exports to the Brazilian
