of reservoirs that previously gave no fi nancial
output. Before switching over to horizontal
wells, the extraction degree of the Dan fi eld
was assessed to 7-8%. Today the extraction
degree is above 30% - mainly driven by
horizontal wells with its corresponding well
technology, Anders Damgaard informs.
While the Dan fi eld due to age uses vertical
as well as horizontal drilling for the oil
extraction, the Halfdan fi eld was from the
beginning completed by using only horizontal
drillings with a total of 55 wells. The
reservoir would hardly have become attractive
without using the horizontal technology,
which has also played an important social
role, as Denmark today is the only EU country
with a net export of oil.

Increasing Interest from Abroad
In DUC the number of horizontal wells has
overtaken the vertical wells, as the oil now
fl ows in 276 horizontal drillings. In a few
years, in Al Shaheen in Qatar the number of
horizontal wells will exceed 300.
- In the North Sea there are several reservoirs
of chalk layers with a very low fl ow. On the
other hand, the diffi cult chalk has given us
the possibility of developing technologies
useful in other parts of the world. We have
conducted great part of the drilling of horizontal
wells around the world, and offshore
we are among the leading companies within
the area. The technology has proved to be
qualifi ed in Denmark as well as in Qatar,
whereas it is not fi nancially attractive in
other regions, such as Kazakhstan, where
the oil extraction takes place on land, and
consequently not possible to the same extent
to gain fi nancial savings on platforms and the
expensive installations, Anders Damgaard
says.
He emphasizes that at each and every reservoir
a thorough analysis has to be effectuated
in order to determine the right extraction
method. Horizontal wells require a certain
area, whereas reservoirs with a high oil
column would reach a higher extraction rate
by using vertical or defl ected wells. However,
Maersk Oil and Gas is convinced that the
Danish knowledge holds export opportunities.
