TEACHERS NOTES—Suggested lesson plan Purpose: The student will be able to successfully read a nonfiction text and complete relevant comprehension and research activities which correspond to the text. Materials: • one copy of the Prim-Ed Publishing Astonishing headlines title per student • sufficient copies of the related reproducibles for all students Before reading: • Introduce students to the vocabulary they will encounter within the text. Students should be encouraged to use a dictionary wherever possible to strengthen dictionary skills and expand their knowledge of words and their meanings. • Set up an ‘Astonishing headlines dictionary’ by stapling together 13 sheets of paper. Write a different letter of the alphabet at the top of each page (front and back). As students read, they are encouraged to write any challenging or unfamiliar words and their definitions on the correct page. Add new vocabulary words as each book in the Astonishing headlines series is read. • Reading the book as an entire class might be helpful for lower-functioning readers. Students who are more confident may be encouraged to read the book on their own after reading one or two chapters as a class. For all levels, introduce the topic and highlight key terms, time lines and maps. • Point out that studying the information in the Datafile pages can aid understanding later when reading the text. • Although most activities are designed for use after reading the book, some are best completed before students read. A few activities may be used during the reading. These activities were designed for a variety of teaching styles. You can distribute all of the activities at once or pick and choose the skills you want to reinforce. During reading: • Provide a comfortable place for students to read. It is important that the reading experience be made as enjoyable as possible for students. Soft music can also be playing in the background while students are reading. Viewing Sample After reading: • Encourage discussion between students about the events outlined in the text.
