Welcome to our August 2018 Issue. 

I cannot believe where the months are going. We wish all the school leavers and 

those moving to schools, universies or colleges the best of luck with the challenges 

ahead. To everyone going away on holiday, have a wonderful safe me and for all our visitors to 

North Dorset; WELCOME. We hope you enjoy your visit and please come back again soon. 

This month, BEWARE, if you are of a nervous disposion we do have a murder in the magazine. If 

you feel strong enough to read Ric Lonsdale’s ficonal tale ‘The Heat of the Moment’ on page 8. Of 

course in the famous words ‘please don’t have nightmares’ but let us know through social media or 

by emailing how you feel about the story. Ric belongs to several wring groups and co-hosts the 

Exchange Wring Group in Sturminster on the 2nd Wed of each month. Gillingham’s own wring 

group Scribblers are looking for beta readers for an anthology of works they are producing. Can 

you help? See page 15. 

Our charity focus this month is on the fabulous fashion show that Shirly Allum (Pg 26) are pung 

on in September. The show itself promises to be a fantasc event raising money for this year’s 

charies. Call into the shop for your ckets. Thanks to Steve Hawkins for his incredibly dramac 

shot of the ambulance catching fire for our front cover. We can’t always send Steve into the heart

Shaftesbury 

CCTV 

Shaftesbury Town Council has 

commissioned local company 

Partnership Security to install 

a replacement CCTV system 

in Shaftesbury. Preparation for 

this regeneration began in 2013 

and the Council is pleased to 

say that the project is nearing 

completion. Partnership 

Security are expecting 

everything to be up and running 

by the end of June. Nick Ogle, 

Director at Partnership Security 

said; “It has been a real pleasure 

to redesign a system that meets 

the current needs of Shaftesbury 

and to work so effectively alongside the Team at The Council.’ 

The Council has been working closely with local Police officers to 

provide a system that meets the needs of Shaftesbury and operates 

effectively and legally. Technology has greatly changed in recent years 

and upgrading the system gives the Town the opportunity to install a 

system that will be far more effective, with better quality and greater 

coverage as well as the capacity to add more cameras to the system if 

they are needed in the future. 

Local Officer PC Ellis says, “I am delighted that at long last Shaftesbury 

is going to get the system it deserves, I am looking forward to the 

benefits that this system will bring and the reassurance it will give to 

both residents and visitors.”

The Heat of the Moment by Rik Lonsdale 

‘Hi Guv. It’s all a bit messy, you’ll need these.’ The uniformed sergeant handed Detective 

Inspector Farley a pair of shoe protectors. 

As he put them on Guy Farley grumbled, ‘I don’t want a description, just show me the body.’ 

Guy hadn’t been surprised when he had got the call to attend a possible murder scene. Since 

he joined the CID fifteen years ago he had been called to a murder every time there was a heat 

wave. 

The body lay in the lounge of the top floor flat of the upmarket block of retirement properties. 

Flats here cost half a million and up, so no ordinary retirees these, but well-heeled and well 

spoken. New purchasers were vetted by a residents’ association before they could buy to make 

sure they would fit in. It wasn’t just money and background that were important here, but 

attitude and status. 

The walls of the flat were decorated with photographs of the victim as a much younger 

woman receiving bouquets of flowers. Her picture was also prominent on the collection of 

recordings, both vinyl and cd’s, that graced the expensive hi-fi set up. 

The body was of a woman of about eighty. Exotically dressed in a silk evening gown, she lay 

on the expensive carpet, blood from her head mingling with the Turkey Red design. An empty 

and blood stained pink champagne bottle lay by her side. A quick look from a distance told Guy 

this was a pure murder, not a theft gone wrong. The victim still wore jewellery that would have 

cost Guy a year’s salary. 

Guy carefully padded around the flat, keeping a distance from the body. After he had done a 

full circuit he returned to the sergeant. 

‘Have you arrested him yet?’ Guy asked. 

The Sergeant was perplexed, but he had known Guy ten years or so and was used to his gruff 

and sometimes patronising manner. 

‘Not yet, Guv, we’re waiting for Forensics to 

turn up. He’s bound to have left some evidence.’ 

‘Now this, Jimmy, is exactly why I’m a DI and 

your still in uniform chasing kids.’ 

‘But the Champagne bottle, it was obviously a 

date, and the bottle was obviously used to batter 

the poor woman’s brains in,’ said the sergeant. 

Guy shook his head slowly, as if frustrated by a 

small child. ‘I don’t doubt that the bottle was the 

murder weapon. But a date? I don’t think so 

Jimmy.’ 

‘I don’t follow you guv, nothings been stolen, 

and she looks like she might have been entertaining, if you get my drift.’ 

‘Look Jimmy, only one glass on the table see? And a couple more bottles in the fridge and a 

case under the kitchen table, obviously her usual tipple. Besides, look at the hi-fi, volume set to 

loud, huge scratch on the old recording of Carmen, and the plug yanked from the socket. I think 

you’ll find our murderer in the flat below. And I think you’ll find he hates opera.

We all feel a bit low from time to time. 

Try modifying your diet. 

Go Mediterranean: Scientists have found that those 

who followed a classic Mediterranean diet were 30 

per cent less likely to develop depression. It is 

thought that the combination of omega 3 fatty acids 

together with natural unsaturated fatty acids and 

antioxidants from olive oil and nuts, flavonoids and 

other phytochemicals from fruit and other plant foods 

and large amounts of natural folates and other B 

vitamins in the overall Mediterranean dietary pattern 

may help to protect against depression. 

Eat selenium: Studies have linked low mood with low 

levels of the mineral selenium. Eating nuts is the best 

way to increase your intake. Brazil nuts are the most 

concentrated selenium source. Just three nuts 

contain the recommended daily intake of selenium for 

a woman. 

Watch your blood sugar: The glycaemic index (GI) 

is a numerical system that indicates how quickly

Fluctuations in blood sugar lead to swings in mood 

and energy. Choose foods that are slow to digest, 

and which offer a gradual, sustained energy release. 

Boost your serotonin: Tryptophan is an essential 

amino acid which is converted in our bodies into the 

neurotransmitter serotonin. Low serotonin levels are 

often associated with depression. Proteins such as 

lean chicken, tuna, salmon and beans are tryptophanrich 

and have been proven to boost the mood. 

Get plenty of fish: Research suggests that omega 3, 

the essential fatty acids found in fish oils, can improve 

your mood. Regular consumption of oily fish (salmon, 

tuna and mackeral) has been associated with better 

moods and a higher self-reported mental health, even 

after adjustment for factors such as income, age and 

other eating patterns. 

Remember that depression is not low mood. It is a 

serious mental health condition. If you think you are 

suffering from depression please consult your GP.

amount of suntan lotion in the morning, then reapply 

every couple of hours. Skimping means you aren’t 

protected!

Charity Focus 

On Wednesday 19 September Shirley Allum Fashions and Lingerie from the High 

Street will host a Charitable show at Shaesbury Arts Centre. In aid of ‘Brain Tumour 

Research’ hps://www.braintumourresearch.org/ and the ‘Raise a Roof’ hp://www. 

shaesburyartscentre.org.uk/stage-4-development-funding-appeal/. 

Featuring new seasons autumn collecons Joseph Ribkoff, Mat de Misaine, Brax, NYDJ, 

Joules, Sea Salt and White Stuff, the styles will cater for women of all ages, shapes and 

sizes 8 - 28. 

Shirley Allum has been a High Street name for many years. The shop has provided 

ouits, accessories and even footwear for many an occasion; formal, everyday and even 

walking the dog. At the back of the store is the lingerie department where all the 

girls are trained fiers. “We stock sizes 30AA – 50K brands including Triumph, Sloggi, 

Fantasie, Freya, Lepel, Charnos and Anita Care for mastectomy.” These can all be found

Shirley has run many of these charity events raising over £68,000 for her supported 

charies. Asked why she should donate all the me and effort to pung these events 

on Shirley said “because we feel it is important to give back to the community and 

raise money for worthy causes”. The last fashion show hosted by Shirley Allum raised 

enough money to put a new guest kitchen 

in at the Forest Home Hospice hp://

that both this year’s charies will benefit 

from this event. She stresses “every penny 

raised will go to the charies”.

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

2 tbsp olive oil 

800g/1lb 12oz courgettes, sliced into 5mm/ 

¼in rounds 

A few sprigs of thyme 

A few basil leaves 

100ml/3½fl oz crème fraîche 

50ml/2fl oz milk 

1 tsp plain flour 

75g/2½oz Gruyère or similar cheese, 

grated 

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 

Method 

Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas 6 

Place the olive oil in a heavy large, lidded 

frying pan over a low heat. When hot add 

the courgettes and herbs and season with 

salt and pepper. 

Cover the pan and cook gently for 10 

minutes, stirring occasionally, until the 

courgettes have softened slightly but still 

have a little bite. Transfer the courgette 

and herb mixture to an ovenproof dish. 

Whisk together the crème fraîche, milk and 

flour in a bowl and season with salt. Pour 

the resulting mixture over the courgettes. 

Don’t worry if there is not enough to 

submerge the courgettes as the mixture 

will bubble up when cooking. 

Sprinkle over the Gruyère cheese. Bake in 

the oven for around 25 minutes, or until 

brown and bubbling. 

Serve as a side dish, or as a light supper 

with crusty bread and a green salad. 

Note: Gruyère is a wonderfully melty 

Swiss cheese but if you can’t find it try 

Emmental, Beaufort, Jarlsberg or Comté.
