Dear friends,
M D ’s Message
The good news is that we have been ranked among the top 100 Great Places to Work in India and I am extremely
proud of this achievement, but now is not the time to rest on our laurels. As an organisation, we need to be
continuously thinking about ways to improve, how to deliver better and innovate more. Building a culture of
improvement is the way, to go from where we are to where we want to be. It is about continuously improving our
business, processes, and way of working.
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone” – Neale Donald Walsch*
There's a reason humans often resist change, there's a comfort in what we know. While the call of the unknown is
appealing to some, it is a natural and reassuring thing to resist putting ourselves in new situations. In the
business world, this is no longer possible. Today, there is more competition than ever, the entire Globe is
becoming one big market place, customers are informed and connected, and innovative products and
disruptions are the order of the day. In such a competitive scenario no Organisation can survive for long if it does
not improve upon its products and processes.
An important requisite for Organizations that are continuously improving is that they incorporate it into their
DNA. One of the best ways to promote this culture of improvement within our organisation is to focus on
delighting the customer as a delighted customer is very dif icult for competitors to take away. The second is to
appreciate people who believe in team work and growing people around them. Third is to focus on bringing out
problems and seeking solutions to the problems. Fourth, to grow people within the organisation and enhance
their capability and last but not the least is to encourage acceptance of management improvement ideas.
The bene its of this for GHCL are multi fold as improved processes require less time, effort and resources thus
lowering operational costs. The results are quicker, and reduced need for rework, with a reduction in operational
costs. Additionally, we will also acquire the ability to accomplish more with the same amount of staff and
resources. Innovation and improvement dear friends, is no longer compulsory, it is a prerequisite for survival.
R S Jalan
* Neale Donald Walsch is an American author of
the series Conversations with God. He is also
an actor, screenwriter, and speaker.
Being respectful to nature – Reclamation work
at GHCL’s mining location
GHCL has two mining locations which supply raw material required for making Soda Ash- Limestone mines
and the Lignite mine both located in Gujarat.
Chemical grade limestone is one of the basic raw material required for manufacturing of Soda ash. This
chemical grade limestone is found along the coastal belt of Saurashtra extending from Dwarka to
Bhavnagar within range of 30 to 40 Kms inland from sea and is made up of fossil milliola.
GHCL has14 mining leases covering an area of 619 hects. out of which 12 mining lease are under operation.
We have completely mined out and reclaimed about 385 hects of land back illed by undersize and made the
area suitable for plantation or pit loor cultivation. About 55 hects has been converted into pond where
runoff water during rainy season got collected. This water help to recharge ground water and also used for
plantation and irrigation.
At our Khadsaliya Lignite Mine, the Geological reserve of the mine is 7.8 million MT and extractable reserve
is 6.82 million MT as per approved mine plan from Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India and up to completion of
inancial year 2017-18.
In these locales, we are continuously trying to revive the land by re illing the area extracted. Under the
reclamation program for the area, green belt is developed in the de-coaled area by regularly planting
saplings.
Small efforts can bring about big change. With this belief we are trying to contribute from our end to the
nature by putting our efforts to maintain the balance by reviving the natural resources again.
The Art and Science of Creating an Extraordinary
Workplace-by Ron Friedman
The author of this book, academic psychologist turned consultant Ron Friedman, set out to show how
employers could do better. There can be no single right way of managing, as he points out, because most
organisations have their own distinct characteristics. Instead, he offers us a range of examples and
techniques worth considering. The result is a little overwhelming. But most readers will ind some
arresting ideas in his book.
Take friendship at work. The author says, “When colleagues are close, a poor effort means more than a
dissatis ied customer or an unhappy manager,”. “It means letting down your friends.
The social pressure to do a good job can often serve as a stronger motivator than anything a boss can say.”
Forming friendships at work takes more than simply discussing the weather or last night's football.
“When all you do at the of ice is talk shop, you might develop a reputation for being competent, but you're
not likely to end up with a whole lot of friends,” Friedman says. Some intimacy and openness is required.
In Gallup's survey of staff attitudes one question might make managers' eyebrows rise: “Do you have a
best friend at work?” But it is there for a reason. Adapting the spirit of video games into the work routine
could also be powerful, Friedman argues.
Jobs can become boring when they get easier. Just as video games get harder the longer you play them, we
need mounting challenges at work. “It's when we're stretching our skills and building our expertise that
we are at our most engaged,” he argues.
The book covers other more familiar ground, but with a light and entertaining touch. The author joins
others in speaking up for the bene its of failure, but he does so intelligently: “When organisations
communicate that failure is not an option, they incur an invisible cost, one that triggers a psychological
reaction that restricts employee thinking, rewards lying, encourages cover-ups, and fuels the
proliferation of more mistakes,” he writes.
Other ways we can break free from unthinking, mechanised work practices include giving space and time
for our unconscious to crack problems, and making sure that time is made for physical exercise and yes,
afternoon naps. Some of this you might ignore. But the evidence is convincing.
Workplaces that support healthy and creative instincts are more dynamic and productive.
