Award Exhibition 

The 55th Annual Lane Cove Art Award opens 

on Friday August 10 with hundreds of spectacular 

artworks on display at Gallery Lane Cove, 164 

Longueville Road from 6pm. 

On show is a rich diversity of art, full of colour and 

variety from originals to artists’ prints, and styles from 

traditional to modern. 

Entry fee for the Opening Night is $5, which includes 

catalogue and refreshments with proceeds going to Rotary 

Club of Lane Cove to fund community projects. 

Exhibition is then open from Saturday August 11 to 

Saturday August 18 from 10am to 4.30pm daily with admission 

$2 for catalogue (early closing 2.30pm Saturday 

August 18). Total prize money this year is $9,250.

Eastwood is a vibrant 

shopping centre, with 

shoppers coming from

I write this letter to 

congratulate the Mayor 

and Ryde Councillors on 

passing a new 150 – 200 

car park space on the 

East side of Rowe Street 

in Eastwood. 

It is well overdue. 

Congratulations to the 

councillors who attend 

our chamber meetings 

every month and have listened 

first hand the frustration 

from the members 

as well as the schools in 

our area, about the traffic. 

Our next step is we 

need to hasten the traffic 

study plans, to controlling 

traffic and pedestrians 

at East and West 

Parade crossings as well 

as the pedestrian crossing 

at the corner of The 

Avenue and Rowe Street, 

near the National bank 

corner. 

We need pedestrian 

traffic lights, as in Martin 

place and at Meadowbank.

Time to blow 

a fuse NSW! 

Dear Sir, 

Malcolm Turnbull’s 

federal government 

review of savage energy 

market pricing 

wouldn’t have been 

necessary if the economic 

gurus of the 

1990s hadn’t brainwashed 

conservative 

state governments 

into believing privatising 

power meant 

cheaper electricity. 

It is quite obvious 

these economic experts 

didn’t know difference 

between volts 

and amps by declaring 

privatised power stations 

meant competition 

in the spot market 

automatically led to 

cheaper power. 

They also believed 

free market competition 

also led to increased 

reliability. They 

were suffering from a 

mental power failure on 

that one too. 

Eighty years of power 

industry history shows 

we have turned a complete 

circle and now 

face plunging back into 

the dark ages. 

Prior to 1950 power 

stations were owned 

by private Australian 

companies. Then from 

1950 to 1990 power 

utilities were nationalised 

and run by governments 

and in the 

process power stations 

became, dare I say it, 

more efficient! 

The proof is in the 

pricing. In the 1990s 

the average price of 

NSW electricity was 

$23.35MWhr* now in 

the privatised, competitive 

market it has 

soared to $82MWhr*. 

Whose lightbulb moment 

led to that outcome? 

Today the reliability 

of the power networks 

has seriously deteriorated 

as starkly shown 

by the recent failure of 

Tasmania’s power link 

with Victoria; the closure 

of the Hazelworth 

power station, the recent 

South Australian 

blackout and the baffling 

switching-off of 

Wallerawang Power 

(1000MW). 

To make matters even 

more dire, NSW Premier, 

Gladys Berejiklian, 

has overseen the 

biggest fire sale in Australian 

history by selling-off 

six NSW power 

stations for just over $ 

1.56 billion dollars. 

Then the Chinese 

company China Light 

and Power that brought 

Wallerwang Power Station 

(1000MW) in 2013 

sold it six months later 

giving the state a loss 

of 10 percent of our 

base load power stations. 

It’s decision making 

like this that led to 

the Tomago Aluminum 

smelter being forced to 

shut down to avoid an 

embarrassing blackout 

on that sweltering day 

of February 10, 2017 

and now on a regular 

basis must shut down 

its three potlines. 

This short-fall would 

not have happened if 

Wallerawang power 

station was still operating 

and the proposed 

addition of two units at 

Bayswater power station 

had gone ahead. 

But the new owner 

of Bayswater Power 

Station AGL was more 

interested in its shareholders 

than the security 

of the power system. 

AGL CEO Andrew Vesey 

was pleased to announce 

that AGL’s halfyear 

profit was $622 

million and shareholders 

will be getting a 

$1.1billion dividend to 

help keep them warm 

this winter. 

Under the stewardship 

of Gladys Berejiklian, 

the state has 

been hit by a chain of 

disastrous decisions, 

for example the selling 

of the Land Titles service 

and the slashing of 

TAFE and to add insult 

to injury there’s now 

also been our short-fall 

in power. 

It’s bad enough that 

Queensland beat us 

regularly in the NRL 

Origin series but what 

is even more galling 

is that in the last 

12 months we’ve 

also been importing 

5,507gigawatt hours 

from the Sunshine 

State. 

Before this mob got 

into government NSW 

was exporting power. 

This has been a shocking 

home-goal for NSW 

and we should all be 

blowing a fuse over it.

was born on Norfolk Island. 

In 1817 the British Government 

appointed Lieutenant 

P P King to explore 

those parts of the coast of 

New Holland not surveyed 

by Matthew Flinders.

1817 and 1821 

King surveyed the north 

and west coasts of the 

continent and the recently 

discovered Macquarie 

Harbour in Van Diemans 

Land. 

On these four voyages 

King made a significant 

contribution to Australian 

exploration by establishing 

the insularity of several 

islands, by investigating 

the inner geography 

of many gulfs and by giving 

the first report of Port

In 1821 King had been 

promoted to commander. 

Two years later in 1823 

King returned to England 

where he was recognised 

as one of Britain’s leading 

hydrographers and in 

February 1824 was made

Adventure with H.M.S. 

Beagle in company, to 

chart the coasts of Peru, 

Chile and Patagonia. This 

arduous task lasted until 

1830. 

There were narrow escapes 

from shipwreck 

and the two commanders 

were under great strain. 

When the expedition 

returned to England in 

October 1830, King was 

promoted to captain.

landholdings in Sydney 

and was commissioner of 

the Australian Agricultural 

Company for ten years 

and a Member of the 

NSW Legislative Council. 

King was honoured 

on the 2-pound postage 

stamp of Australia in 

1963. 

He was the first Australian-born 

to reach the 

rank of Admiral in the 

Royal Navy and for years 

the only Australian-born 

to attain eminence in the 

world outside the Australian 

colonies. 

In 1836 Charles Darwin 

described him as ‘my 

beau ideal of a captain’. 

Conrad Martens’ painting 

in the State Library of 

his funeral with a 22 gun 

salute on Sydney Harbour 

in 1856 paid homage to 

the last journey of a great 

Australian.

A MUSICAL program 

featuring the historic Bevington 

organ will

The organ built in 1887 

by Henry Bevington and 

Sons, Soho, London, is 

one of the largest examples 

remaining in the 

world of a Bevington organ

It was installed in the 

Church during construction 

and was first played 

in June 1888.

have a strong musical tradition.

Hunters Hill Day celebrated!

Yesterday was celebrated as the inaugural annual Hunters Hill Day commemorating 

the first anniversary of the victory to preserve the independence, 

local democracy and unique character of the historic Municipality 

from big brother State Government forced amalgamation. 

Hunters Hill residents and campaigners 

headed by present and former mayors 

celebrated last night at the Hunters Hill 

Club exactly a year to the day when the 

NSW Court of Appeal declared that the 

proposal to forcibly amalgamate Hunters 

Hill Council with Ryde and Lane Cove 

Councils was invalid. 

July 31 is now indelibly linked with the 

independence and sovereignty of the Municipality 

of Hunters Hill which has successfully 

fought successive attacks on its 

independence. 

Hunters Hill has withstood assaults on 

its independence for over 150 years and 

hopes to maintain its position as Australia’s 

oldest garden suburb with over two 

thirds of the municipality conservation areas. 

The last day in July was proclaimed as 

Hunters Hill Day unanimously at the last 

meeting of Hunters Hill Council following 

a passionate speech by former mayor 

Richard Quinn who said “the date must be 

etched in the corporate memory of Hunters 

Hill and never forgotten”. 

He said “there was no mandate for the 

forced merger and communities rejected 

it as a scam and our constant calls for a 

plebiscite were met with arrogant disregard 

by this government”. 

Mayor Mark Bennett says Hunters Hill 

Day celebrates the community fight for a 

democratic principle as well as for local 

council independence and heritage. 

He warns that we will have another challenge 

in the future and we need to be vigilant. 

Deputy Mayor Ross Williams says the 

fight will continue until the Berejiklian 

government pays Hunters Hill the court 

costs awarded against it.

Clr Lane cleared of 

misleading Ryde Council 

The City of Ryde Council 

has resolved to take no further 

action against Liberal Clr Jordan 

Lane in relation to a controversial 

Department of Planning 

document he tabled at a 

recent council meeting. 

The document cast doubt on 

Mayor Jerome Laxale’s allegation 

the state government is to 

blame for overdevelopment and 

backed Clr Lane’s argument that 

councils have powers to amend 

Local Environment Plans to protect 

residential areas. 

Labor councillors had pushed 

for the three month long investigation 

into the document to find 

out if it was genuine or whether 

Clr Lane had attempted to mislead 

the council with a hoax. 

In an interview with The 

Weekly Times, Clr Lane said he 

stood by the document. 

“If any other Councillor bothered 

to do their homework before 

voting on motions, they too 

could have received the same 

document from the Department,” 

he said. 

He would now like an apology. 

“I’m pleased this costly witchhunt 

has concluded, but am disappointed 

that some councillors 

would rather waste ratepayer 

funds attacking their political opponents 

than fixing our broken 

planning laws,” he said.

New Melanoma Clinical Guideline Update 

Melanoma patients across Australia will benefit 

from last month’s release of updated clinical 

care guidelines that recommend sentinel node 

biopsy and drug therapy as important tools in 

the management of melanoma. 

The updated guidelines reflected new and advanced diagnostic 

and treatment options for melanoma resulting from 

research reported over the last five years. 

“The melanoma treatment landscape has changed dramatically 

in recent years due to extensive and ongoing research 

and clinical trials, and it is vital that frontline healthcare professionals 

across Australia are aware of new diagnostic techniques 

and treatments that are saving lives,” Chairman of the 

Melanoma Guideline Task Force Team Professor Thompson 

says. 

“Sentinel lymph node biopsy is an important, minimally 

invasive staging procedure which enables clinicians to determine 

a patient’s risk of recurrence of melanoma. Discussing 

this procedure with patients is important because if the sentinel 

node has melanoma in it, drug treatment can reduce the 

chance of the melanoma returning. 

“Recent clinical trial results have shown that complete removal 

of all remaining lymph nodes, previously the standard 

treatment recommendation, usually provides no additional 

patient benefit, and it is no longer standard management,” 

Professor Thompson says. 

‘”New data show that sentinel lymph node biopsy is critical 

to understanding whether a patient is at sufficiently high 

risk to benefit from a course of drug therapy to prevent recurrence 

of melanoma. This has been standard in breast cancer 

or many years, and now melanoma patients have a similar 

anagement algorithm. 

“In addition to detailing potentially life-saving drug therapy 

options, the updated guidelines also highlight areas in 

which more research is needed, and put an emphasis on 

frontline healthcare providers referring patients to clinical 

trials when established treatments aren’t available”. 

Other key recommendations covered in the updated guidelines 

include: 

How to identify individuals at very high risk of melanoma, 

and what education they and their partners should receive to 

help them detect skin cancer early 

The importance of doctors investigating any lesions that 

grow or change in size, shape, colour or elevation over a period 

of more than a month 

New guidelines for biopsies and excisions 

The need for melanoma survivors to be aware of their risk 

of developing further primary melanomas and for health 

professionals to remind those with a prior diagnosis to use 

sun protection 

Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the 

world, with one Australian dying from melanoma every five 

hours. More than 14,000 Australians are expected to be diagnosed 

with melanoma this year. 

“There is no doubt that early detection followed by prompt 

and appropriate treatment are still key to surviving melanoma, 

and it is hoped that these updated guidelines will 

improve the diagnosis and effective treatment of early stage 

melanoma as well as the treatment of later stage melanoma,” 

Professor Thompson added.

“The message to Australians is simple – keep a close eye on 

your skin and if anything looks suspicious or changes, get it 

checked by a medical professional who now has access to 

up-to-date, evidence-based treatment guidelines.”

Local residents, Steve and Pat Perrin, opened 

their home and preliminary meetings were held. 

Advice was sought from Phil Isaacs and the late 

Bob McCallum who were pioneers in community 

banking in NSW and who had first-hand experience 

in establishing a very successful Bendigo 

Community Bank at North Richmond. 

A formal steering committee was set up to test 

the need and the appetite for a community banking 

service. 

The committee put up a significant amount of “at 

risk” capital to fund the initiative. Feasibility studies 

and surveys were conducted, and public meetings 

were held. 

The response and enthusiasm was overwhelming. 

The Weekly Times got behind the initiative and 

Mr John Booth provided strong personal support. 

A prospectus for a company limited by share 

capital was issued and, following an outstanding 

community effort, over $1,000,000 was raised from 

within the local community. 

A professional Board was formed with experienced 

and qualified local people and in May 2005, 

the North Ryde Community Bank was formally 

opened on Cox’s Road by Mr Rob Hunt, the then 

CEO of Bendigo Bank. At this opening Mr Hunt (the 

founder of community banking in Australia), urged 

us all to “think globally but act locally “, a motto 

North Ryde Community bank still follows to this 

day. 

The rest is history! As a business model, the bank 

has been an outstanding community success and 

achieved its key objective in providing a professional 

banking service for the local community. 

Ably led by Mr Pat Italiano and his talented staff, 

the bank has gone from strength to strength with 

over $100M of banking business under management. 

The money invested through local banking 

has allowed the bank to return a percentage of 

its profits to support the local community through 

sponsorships of local schools, sporting groups and 

community organisations. 

Personalised service is key to the future of local 

banking. With the development of Artificial Intelligence 

in global banking systems for basic banking 

services there remains much to be desired in a local,

Virus Hustle: Pioneer Immunologist Dr Angelica Lau 

When she migrated from Hong Kong, pioneer immunologist, 

Dr Angelica Lau was enrolled into year 6 at a local public 

school. 

This University of Sydney alumnus of mine, succeeded in HSC 

by choosing her elective subjects based on interest as opposed 

to scoring strategy, while, maintaining her energetic pursuits in 

extracurricular activities. 

Dr Lau emphasises that to succeed in school one must have 

friends of various cultures as that prepares one for the real world. 

She also says to be generous as sacrifice shows dedication. 

“Eventually you will get noticed and doors will open. Keep asking 

questions. Answers are not rations; they do not come on a plate. 

Further, have a go at leading the pack and above all, always be 

respectful to your peers.” 

Having excelled with 1st class honours in Chemistry, fictional 

zombie virus inspired Dr Lau to obtain a PhD in Immunology from 

of the prestigious Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Dr Lau 

says with philosophical certainty of Bruce Lee, “Chances of success 

increases when one is explorative and open-minded. Be 

like water, my friend (comparing Lee’s theory in fluidity)…choose 

what delights you as opposed to force feeding yourself with stereotypes. 

Do not treat yourself like foie gras.” Says the learned 

pioneer, alluding to her disapproval of her uncle’s appetite for this 

culinary delight. 

Dr Alice Chik of Macquarie University, a peer in higher research, 

adds to the above. “There is a correlation between high grades 

and good mental health. Those students who shine pay attention 

to their emotional wellbeing. Further, they have a very good understanding 

of their degree programme. You see, common sense 

is not that common.” 

Macquarie University Human Biology honour roll student and 

Lane Cove Citizen Award recipient, Aaron Weir, has this sobering 

tip: “…be sure that your WiFi is good because if you get stuck 

at learning complex topics…watch Youtube!” Says the polymath 

taekwondo instructor who is dubbed the ‘Black Belt Frankenstein’.

The King and Queen of Green rule at Moocooboola 

THE King and Queen of Green will rule over this year’s Hunters Hill Moocooboola Festival 

- which celebrates the green environment of Australia’s oldest garden municipality. 

These traditional monarchs of misrule 

and environmental awareness 

hope to meet their subjects at the 

Moocooboola Festival, which will 

be held on Sunday August 5, from 

9.30am until 4pm in Boronia Park, 

Hunters Hill. 

“The King and Queen of Green as 

well as Good for the Hood will be on 

site providing environmental educational 

activities for kids and grownups,” 

Event Organiser Esther Barra 

said. 

“The annual Moocooboola Festival 

will be a fantastic affair with food and 

wine, markets, music, comedy, stacks 

of free kids’ stuff, all day rides and 

much more. 

“Moocooboola is one of the region’s 

best community and family festivals, 

with a fantastic atmosphere and an 

abundance of things to do and see. 

“There is plenty of family fun with 

free kids activities and games.” 

The highlights of this year’s event 

include the La Petite Grande mini 

‘spiegelesque’ tent described as being 

gorgeous on the outside and full 

of big surprises on the inside. 

“Gleaming with 1920s Art Deco, this 

tent will provide you with a cabaret 

feel that is complimented by a modern 

twist.” 

“There will be quirky and inspiring 

performances every 45 mins from 

9.30am and entry to the tent is free.” 

Peter Miller Robinson, a Moocooboola 

favourite, will be playing on the 

stage from 12pm and the Stringy Bark 

Jazz will perform from 2.40pm. 

The annual Dog Show will be held at 

11am at The Ring. 

“Bring your dog (on a leash) for some 

super serious competitions such as 

Owner Look-a-like competition or the 

Dog of the Year competition.”

In the mid to late 1800s in Italy, life wasn’t so hectic and to quench his intellectual thirst, Vilfredo 

Federico Damaso Pareto, wore many hats including philosopher, engineer, economist and political 

scientist. 

All that brain power didn’t 

go to waste because in his 

mid-50s, while still in career-defining 

form, he made 

a profound and enduring 

observation on inequality 

and the extent to which it is 

part of our everyday lives. 

The Pareto Principle or 

80/20 Rule - familiar to anyone 

who’s studied economics 

at some point in their 

lives - notes that roughly 

“Eighty (80) per cent of the 

effects come from 20 per 

cent of the causes.” 

You’ll be surprised just 

how many scenarios, 

across a range of topics, 

this can be applied to. 

But you shouldn’t be surprised 

that I’m about to 

put on my special iChoice 

glasses - which gives me 

an exciting and innovative 

perspective on almost anything 

- to offer my take on 

Pareto’s philisophical gem. 

From where I sit, it translates 

to: “Twenty (20) per 

cent of people are benefiting 

at the cost of the other 

80 per cent. 

How so? People ask me 

how new-to-bank clients 

can get a rate of 3.59%. 

I’ll tell you. It’s basically 

this - one out of five people 

are clever cookies. 

They’re the ones who 

have worked out the system 

and understand that 

banks take advantage of 

their existing customers so 

they can offer ‘you beaut’ 

rates to new customers. 

But this type of inequality 

isn’t something that happens 

because of a person’s 

postcode, sex, race or anything 

that may usually separate 

someone privileged 

from a battler. 

Four out of five people 

choose to stay in the 

dark and in doing so, also 

choose to pay a bit too 

much to the bank, to subsidise 

the cheaper rates I 

secure for all my clients. 

Consider this: If less than 

80% of people were apathetic 

or complacent and 

more demanded a cheaper 

rate, it wouldn’t be feasible 

for the bank to offer an 

interest rate of 3.59% on 

loans to so many people. 

To the vast majority of 

those paying more than 

3.7%, my clients thank you 

and ask that you keep doing 

what you’re doing. 

I’m really enjoying meeting 

so many of you, but 

please - only one in five 

people should call me – or 

we’ll imbalance the system 

and pull an economic hamstring 

and mix up or yings 

with our yangs.

by council rangers outside its Victoria Road showroom.

Mechanic shocked by Ryde ranger’s fines 

A FULL invesigation into 

a recent spate of parking 

fines issued outside 

a mechanic’s workshop 

in Meadowbank has been 

ordered by City of Ryde 

Mayor Jerome Laxale. 

The Mayor ordered the 

invesigation during last 

Tuesday night’s council 

meeting in response to a 

speech to councillors by 

irate workshop owner David 

Germanos. 

Mr Germanos told 

the meeting he is “appalled 

and disgusted” 

by the actions of a City 

of Ryde parking ranger 

who blitzed a short strip 

around the workshop 

on the corner of Church 

Street and Suttor Avenue. 

He also refused to pay 

the fines. 

“The parking officer 

who attended took photographs 

of the cars and 

was laughing and I request 

the officer be stood 

down from her position 

as a public nuisance,” he 

told the meeting. 

The issue is the result 

of a shortage of parking 

in the narrow Avenue 

where cars often park on 

the footpath to avoid being 

hit by large vehicles 

turning left from Church 

Street. 

Mr Germanos is particularly 

angry a car was 

booked while parked acroos 

his driveway. 

“Our neighbour got a 

fine in his own driveway.” 

Mayor Laxale told Mr 

Germanos: 

“I’ve asked for an investigation 

and I take your allegations 

seriously.” 

The City of Ryde later 

released this statement: 

“The City of Ryde can 

confirm no fines have 

been issued in relation 

to this matter. Council is 

liaising with the business 

owner about parking issues 

in relation to his 

business premises.”

Car crashes into Ryde home 

A car crashed into a Ryde home around 

6.45pm on Saturday night. 

The crash occurred at the 

intersection of Allan Street 

and Addington Street and police 

report the Toyota Camry 

was driven by a 47-year-old 

woman who was trapped in 

the vehicle and needed to be 

freed by fire brigade officers. 

She was treated by paramedics 

at the scene before 

being taken to Royal North 

Shore Hospital with facial injuries. 

She will also undergo mandatory 

drug and alcohol testing. 

The house sustained minor 

damage.

A SUSPICIOUS FIRE in 

Marsfield on Saturday night is 

being investigated by police. 

The fire broke out around 

7:55pm and engulfed a large 

grassland area at the Field of 

Mars Reserve. 

The fire was extinguished 

around 9pm and a later survey 

of the burned out area 

revealed that around 100 metres 

of scrub area adjacent to 

the walking trail near Pittwater 

Road had been damaged. 

Ryde Detectives are investigating 

the fire as well as two 

other fires that have been lit 

in the area in the past few 

weeks.

A KNIFE CARRYING MAN 

was arrested and charged 

with shoplifting in Eastwood 

on Wednesday. 

The 55 year old is alleged to 

have stolen three cans of alcoholic 

drinks found in a police 

search which also found a 

black handled butterfly knife, 

which is a prohibited weapon. 

Police allege he could not 

provide police with a lawful 

excuse to have the prohibited 

knife and he was charged 

with Shoplifting and Possess 

or Use A Prohibited Weapon. 

He was given conditional bail.

A CANNABIS CAUTION 

was issued to a 21 year old 

Eastwood man in Marsfield 

on Tuesday night. 

The man was allegedly 

found with the drug in a car 

park on Sabraon Road. 

He is reported to have been 

in a car whose occupants 

attempted to conceal items 

when approached by police 

officers, who report they 

could smell an odour of cannabis 

in the car. 

A police searched is alleged 

to have found the cannabis 

in the rear map pocket of the 

passenger seat.

Little dragons thrilled with 

Marsfield Park upgrade 

THRILLED their Marsfield Park home ground will get 

extensive lighting upgrades, these Macquarie Dragons 

players (pictured) rushed to share the great news 

with The Weekly Times last Wednesday. 

Marsfield Park joins Gladesville’s Monash Park as 

the first of two fields to get the lighting upgrades, 

which are part of the City of Ryde’s ongoing work 

to upgrade several sporting venues across the community. 

Mayor Jerome Laxale, Clr Roy Maggio and Daniel 

Ristic from Football NSW broke the news to the excited 

dragons. 

Marsfield Park is a home ground shared by the Macquarie 

Dragons Football Club and the Central Eastwood 

Rugby Club, while Monash Park is the home 

ground for Gladesville Ravens Football Club. 

The lighting upgrades are funded under Council’s 

four year delivery plan at a cost of $275,000. Both 

projects were assisted with two separate $20,000 

grants from Football NSW as part of its Let’s Light Up 

Football campaign, through lobbying by Clr Maggio.

Hot shot Nathan qualifies 

for US Amateur Golf event

RYDE golfing sensation Nathan Barbieri (pictured) has 

underlined his potential with impressive results on the 

United States amateur golf circuit. 

Twenty one year old 

Barbieri - who honed 

his golfing skills from 

an early age at North 

Ryde Golf Club - 

capped a stunning 

month of tournament 

play by qualifying 

for the US Amateur 

Championship at 

Pebble Beach to be 

staged from August 

13-19. 

In his maiden overseas 

venture, Barbieri 

carded matching one 

under par rounds of 71 

at the Colleton River 

Club in Bluffton, South 

Carolina to clinch one 

of six positions available._ 

This tremendous feat 

follows his meritorious 

achievement of winning 

the NSW Medal 

earlier this year. 

Nathan credited his 

caddy, local member 

Billy Adams, for his 

success in progressing 

to his first US Amateur 

tournament. 

“He’s a member at 

the course here, and 

I couldn’t have done 

it without his local 

knowledge.” 

The US Amateur 

qualification caps off 

an outstanding period 

of golf for the rising 

star. 

After making his debut 

for NSW at the recent 

Interstate Series, 

Nathan captured the 

imagination of golfing 

pundits with a string of 

superb performances 

that include a top ten 

and three top-five finishes 

in his last four 

starts in the United 

States. 

Barbieri, a scholarship 

holder at Monash 

Country Club, is now 

preparing for the US 

Amateur event by honing 

his game at North 

Ryde Golf Club where 

he works in the Pro 

Shop. 

Nathan came agonisingly 

close to the biggest 

win of his career 

at the Sahalee Players 

Championship in 

Washington state when 

he finished runner up to 

American Cole Madey. 

In an enthralling tussle, 

Barbieri and Madey 

were tied for the lead 

playing the par-five 

before the American 

knocked his second 

shot onto the green to 

about four metres and 

then calmly two-putted 

for birdie. 

Nathan also shone in 

North America, finishing 

in a tie for third in 

The Rice Planters Amateur 

Championship 

at Snee Farm Country 

Club in Charlestown, 

South Carolina. 

He shot rounds of 71, 

74, 68 and 66 to finish 

nine under par, just four 

shots behind the eventual 

winner Jonathan 

Brightwell. 

A former winner of the 

prestigious North Ryde 

Amateur Cup and Club 

Championship, Barbieri 

is an established member 

of the NSW Mens 

Team and coached by 

Dean Kinney. 

As a junior, Barbieri 

quickly developed into 

one of North Ryde’s 

top prospects - representing 

the club with 

distinction in Junior 

Pennants and the Encourage 

Shield competition. 

Nathan won both the 

North Ryde Junior and 

Ryde-Parramatta Junior 

Open tournaments 

at the age of 17 to 

come under the scrutiny 

of keen golf judges. 

The promising colt is 

also a former TWT Club 

Six/Ryde Sports Foundation 

Sports Star of 

the Year Grand finalist.

Family Day this Saturday

The event is an opportunity 

to celebrate the club’s 

deep ties with its community
