They say that asking the right questions takes
as much skill as giving the right answers. For
this edition, we put this old saying to the test
by interviewing people whose stories are worth
to be told.
Whether they have built successful brands by
having the courage to follow their dreams or
whether they carry the faith of huge companies
in their managerial hands, these people are
living proof that when there’s a will, there’s a
way.
So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back in your favourite
chair and get ready to discover what this
number has in store. Just to give you a little
hint, besides amazing stories, we have also put
together a list of cultural events worth attending
this summer, not to mention some destinations
that will totally make your next vacation
one to remember.
We hope you enjoy this issue.
2018, a busy year
for Bentley and Lamborghini
6

Earlier this year, we witnessed the reveal of the
world’s first Super SUV, the Lamborghini Urus.
How was it received by the public?
M.T.: The interest for Urus was high long before its
local launch which happened earlier this spring.
Discussions with clients started right when the Super
SUV was first announced back in 2012. The idea of a
Lamborghini that can be driven on almost any type
of road, and, more importantly, any season, was extremely
appealing to many of the brand’s fans here,
in Romania. As a result, in the second half of 2018 we
can already expect to spot Urus on the streets.
Mihaela Tudorica is the Sales
Manager of Bentley and Lamborghini
in Romania. We had the chance to
chat about the newest addition to the
Lamborghini family, Urus, the world’s
first Super SUV and the new Bentley
Continental GT.
7

Why an SUV and how much will it keep from
Lamborghini’s DNA?
M.T.: Following two supercars that have met
worldwide success during the past few years,
the launch of an SUV that would match the
extraordinary performances of the Huracán
and Aventador, but that could be driven in a
larger variety of contexts, was a natural step in
Lamborghini’s development strategy. The third
model in the range of the Italian manufacturer
remains loyal to the brand’s DNA and philosophy,
delivering class leading performances and
combining on road and off-road abilities in
unique Lamborghini style. More exactly, with a
4.0 liter V8 twin-turbo engine delivering 650 HP,
Urus accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds
and reaches a top speed of 305 km/h – making
it the fastest SUV available on the market at the
moment.
What is Urus named after?
M.T.: Sticking to the well-known Lamborghini naming
tradition, Urus bears the name of a special breed of bull.
Urus, also known as the Aurochs, was a large species of
wild cattle that inhabited Europe, Asia, and North Africa,
considered to be the ancestor of modern domestic cattle.
The blazing power and the imposing attitude of Aurochs
are representative of the Italian SUV.
There is no doubt that Lamborghini set the bar high in the
luxury automotive industry. What should we expect from
the Urus?
M.T.: Urus is currently the star of Sant’Agata Bolognese.
The world’s first Super SUV is a true Lamborghini from all
points of view, a high-performance luxury car that can be
enjoyed by both driver and passengers. Urus is equally
suitable for short rides in the city and for long journeys,
capable of supercar-like performances both on road and
on track and also ready for every off-road adventure.
8

Let’s talk about another star of the year – the
new Bentley Continental GT. What is new?
M.T.: Almost everything has been redeveloped
and improved at the new Continental GT. Ranging
from the highly sculpted exterior design,
built through a revolutionary technology developed
for the aerospace industry and the enhanced
version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0 litre,
twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine, delivering
635 PS, to the technology features found in the
cabin of the Grand Tourer, the new Continental
GT is a true game changer in terms of luxurious
sportiness. The highlight of the interior, next to
the exquisite finishes and the peerless attention
to details, is the Bentley Rotating Display – a
revolving three-sided unit, featuring an elegant
wood veneer on one side, a 12.3” touchscreen
and three analogue dials on the other two. In a
nutshell, the new Continental GT is a statement
car, featuring the perfect mix of luxury, comfort,
power and agility.
How do you see the direction of supercar technologies in the
next 10/20 years? Is the future electric?
M.T.: E-mobility is definitely an important topic for the supercar
class as well, but the challenge may be even bigger compared
to other automotive segments, as driving a supercar is associated
with extreme sportiness and power, superior performances
and potent engine and exhaust sounds. Therefore, the
challenge is to adapt technologies to the electric trend and
preserve what is illustrative of the brand. The cars should still
be able to provide extraordinary thrills behind the wheel and,
of course, unspoilt driving pleasure. Last year, Lamborghini
presented its first electric concept car – Lamborghini Terzo
Millennio – a visionary concept, designed to do just that –
deliver authentic emotions on the road and meet the mobility
demands of the future.
Finding excellence in design
Tudor. Personal Tailor is a fashion label dedicated to men, of British inspiration
and Italian craftsmanship, a custom-made concept reinvented in a perfect
synchronization of the English tailoring along with a dynamic bond to the everyday
customer’s needs. We discussed with Alin Copindeanu, co-founder and CEO, about the
beginnings of Tudor Tailor, the brand’s name origin and future plans.
12

How did it all begin?
Alin Copindeanu: The idea came to life after
a trip to UK, in London. I met someone who
was developing a similar type of business
there and I thought this could be a good
opportunity to bring the concept to Romania
as well, on an emergent market, in need of a
brand that would reinvent traditional tailoring.
Is there a story behind the name of your
brand?
A.C.: Although it seems like a Romanian name,
Tudor is inspired by the Tudor Dynasty that
ruled England and was chosen because it’s
easy to pronounce in all languages.
What is, in your opinion, the key to creating an
authentic brand?
A.C.: The key to creating an authentic brand
stands in creating value for all those involved
– from tailors, whose fine mark touches every
creation, to the final customer. We take pride
in offering our clients personalized services
and the slogan “Our client, our priority” is one
of our guidelines. In the end, our goal is not
just to sale suits, but to create a relationship
with our customers.
13

Please walk us through the process of creating
a suit? Where does it all begin?
A.C.: A Tudor Tailor costume is a unique piece,
adapted through a made to fit tailoring for each
client, so that it will compliment him perfectly.
It all starts with the measuring process,
which takes around 30 minutes. In this time,
a Tudor Tailor consultant will suggest what
materials options suit one best – we work with
renowned producers from Italy, UK and France
to offer an exceptional quality of
materials. After choosing the material and the
cut, in almost 4 weeks you will have your suit
ready for the final adjustments, if necessary.
Recently we had the chance to catch a glimpse
of your new Summer Collection. Please tell us
about its main features.
A.C.: The new Summer Collection is dedicated
to the original, creative and confident man.
Since he is the one that really matters, we have
created for him a line of lightweight suits, that
follow the line of the body and that are made
of wrinkle resistant and stain proof fabrics.
We put lightness and comfort first and the
name is a subtle hint to this collection’s
philosophy: “Don’t be a suit”.
What’s next for Tudor Tailor?
A.C.: We are very glad to announce that
TUDOR TAILOR is ready now to be on the
international elegance map and we will
proudly compete with the big brands globally.
The
GULFSTREAM
From the moment you board a Gulfstream aircraft, the cabin enchants you.
Everywhere you look, everything you touch, you find craftsmanship and a high attention
to detail. The gleam of the finishes on the ledges and tables. The sparkle of the goblets
and flatware. The high-definition quality of the video equipment. Each element
of the Gulfstream interior is exquisitely designed for one purpose – to impress.
18

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. is undoubtedly
known not only for its
engineering excellence, but also for its
amazing interiors. For the second time in
as many years, Gulfstream has been recognized
for its design work. Their Interior and
Industrial Design teams recently earned
2018 International Yacht & Aviation Awards
for the all-new Gulfstream G500 and
Gulfstream G600 seat and cabin designs.
“This recognition speaks to the creativity,
craftsmanship, quality and
customer-centric design focus inherent
throughout the Gulfstream product
line,” said Mark Burns, president,
Gulfstream. “The Gulfstream G500
and Gulfstream G600 showcase our
ongoing commitment to a high-quality
customer experience that is tailored
precisely for our customers’
productivity, comfort and design
aesthetic. I am incredibly proud of our
very talented team for winning these
awards.”
The fully outfitted G600 test aircraft
earned the Private Jet Design award for
its three-living-area cabin with crew rest,
which demonstrates the flexibility that is
part of the Gulfstream design DNA.
A central focus of the winning G600 design is the
mirrored mid-cabin bulkhead, a literal reflection
of the customer experience and cabin versatility.
Reflection continues in subtle ways, from the
layered, mixed grain on the mocca oak veneer
that catches the light with understated elegance
to the geometric carpet pattern that mimics
the herringbone design of the seats’ perforated
and quilted inserts. The four-living-area G650ER
won the same award in 2017.
Gulfstream’s mission-specific seating, created for
the G500 and G600, took home the seating award
in the Product Category. The seat styles feature
three design aesthetics, Sport, Classic and
Minimalist, that serve as starting points
for customization. The seating was created in
Gulfstream’s Research and Development Center,
where industrial and interior designers, the
engineering team and upholstery shop
collaborated on the aesthetics, ergonomics
and functionality that led to the final design.
19

• The Classic seat aesthetic offers an elegant design
with mid-level bolstering that creates a blend of
strong support and generous freedom of movement.
• Sport provides robust bolstering that evokes
high-performance standards and is ideal for long
periods of sitting. The Sport seat includes a contoured
mattress insert for berthing.
• The Minimalist seat provides the least amount of
bolstering in favor of a comfortable conversion to
berthing for the passenger who desires a greater
focus on the sleeping surface for long-range flights.
The individual tailoring of all three seat styles
starts with additional design details such as quilted
inserts; decorative stitching; seat arm accents in
leather, fabric, veneer or lacquer; and Gulfstream’s
wide variety of fine leathers and upholstery, all custom-crafted
for each aircraft.
The G600 interior and seats have been tested as
part of Gulfstream’s rigorous flight-test programs for
the G500 and G600 to ensure the aircraft perform as
they should long before customer deliveries, which
are expected later this year and in 2019, respectively.
This award is only one recognition of Gulsftream’s
focus on customer centric design. The brand is also
known for its exclusive sales and design center in
London, the company’s first such facility outside the
United States, that gives international customers
more convenient access to Gulfstream’s sales and
design staff.
"Because of London’s stature as one of the
world’s financial and cultural capitals, many
of our customers and potential customers
worldwide have business interests there and
visit frequently or have a residence in the
area,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president,
Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “They’ll now
have a convenient Gulfstream facility in
London where they can go through the aircraft
selection and cabin-design process easily and
efficiently.”
20

FUNCTIONAL, beautiful
Gulfstream strives to make personalizing
the aircraft an enjoyable experience.
Their team of design professionals
demonstrates the same innovation and
expertise as the aeronautical engineers do
in delivering the world’s most advanced
business aircraft.
UNMATCHED
The environment of the aircraft wide-cabin is engineered to
energize. Large panoramic windows, one of Gulfstream’s
signatures, flood the space with natural light. Acoustical advancements
produce a quiet, soothing interior. A cabin replenished
with 100 percent fresh air and pressurized to the lowest altitude
in business aviation reduces the impact of jet lag. A peaceful
journey leaves travellers refreshed on arrival and ready for the
tasks ahead, be they board meetings with peers or board games
with family.
The nearly 5,500-square-foot (511-square-meter) center, located
in the Mayfair district of central London includes a showroom
filled with leather, veneer, fabric and carpet selections along
with conference rooms and customer offices.
As in the Savannah and Dallas centers, customers can use
state-of-the-art visualization software to see a highly
realistic image of a cabin in real time on a touch-screen monitor
or tablet computer screen. The rendering includes cabin
configurations, colors, fabrics and furnishings. The London sales
and design center is staffed by sales executives and support
personnel, including Trevor Esling, Gulfstream regional senior
vice president, International Sales, Europe.
Ibiza
Located in the heart of the Mediterranean’s undisputed capital of
glamorous parties, ME Ibiza enjoys an almost private feel, perfect
for those who want to dance the night away, but also enjoy some
relaxation time.
We discussed with Adam Munday, the hotel’s General Manager,
about the Ibiza experience and the best that the island has to offer.
30

“I think your life is influenced
so much by the people you
meet. I am lucky to be on
an island that has so much
diversity.”
Please tell us a few words about your career.
How did it all begin?
Adam Munday: I began working in a local hotel
close to my house from the age of 16, I then
decided to study and work in hotels at the same
time, I qualified in business and finance administration
whilst working. I progressed from
a trainee to events manager in 4 years running
events for over 1000 people. From then I have experienced
all types of hotel sin various locations,
at the age of 25 I became a General Manager of
my first hotel in the UK.
What is the most challenging thing about being a
General Manager?
A.M.: Finding the right balance, also time…the
day always ends so quick. I always want to make
myself available to my team, to help, support
and answer questions, this is difficult and the
one thing that frustrates me.
31

What do you enjoy the most about your job?
A.M.: The people, my team, my guests, the island.
I think your life is influenced so much by the
people you meet. I am lucky to be on an island
that has so much diversity.
What has been the most memorable part of your
experience?
A.M.: In my career I guess being awarded ´one of
the most promising people under 30 year olds in
UK hospitality in 2005´ and now being the General
Manger of the ME Ibiza a Leading hotel of the
world is most definitely a highlight.
What is the best thing about working in Ibiza?
A.M.: The simple answer would be the sun and
the sea but for me the most interesting part is
the people, the culture and this indescribable
VIBE that people talk about, the energy, the
passion and the desire to live life to maximum. I
can’t wait to explore the island more.
What would you say is a must if you are visiting
Ibiza?
A.M.: Cala Escondida for an amazing sunset, I
enjoy Amante for a romantic dinner with my wife,
Santa Gertrudis for a relaxing local coffee, Atlantis
for a great hike to clear your head after an
amazing night out in Dalt Vila walking the streets
taking in some local food and wine.
32

What is the biggest highlight of the ME Ibiza
Hotel and what sets it apart?
A.M.: Firstly, the location and view fr om the rooftop,
it is simply spectacular. Also, the Angel Leon
restaurant serving some amazing fish dishes in
the high season, my personal favorite is when
you arrive to the hotel and see the view to the
pool and sea. You must check out some of our
suites too, Santa Eulalia also is worth highlighted,
a beautiful town by the sea,
From a business standpoint, what do you feel
are the biggest challenges facing the hospitality
industry in the next 5 to 10 years?
A.M.: Technology and keeping up with the trends,
hotels used to be the place you went to experience
better than your home but now people
have the latest technology, TV and music systems
in their hands. I also think being able to make
yourself standout against the competition. For
me it is always about the people, making sure
you have the best team possible to deliver awesome
experiences.
Accommodation
in the heart of the business environment
Launched at the beginning of the summer of 2017, Studio One Accommodation Suites has 32
rooms and it is located in the heart of the West Gate Business Centre business environment.
Studio One Accommodation Suites provides all the facilities that the guests may require – large
sunny rooms, kitchenette, A/C, bathroom, WIFI access thoughout the property, office and minibar.
34

Studio One Accommodation Suites is a project that
fulfils the needs of business accommodation that
the companies located in the West Gate Business
Park had. „It is easier and more productive to
accommodate your business partners or colleagues
only 3 mins away from your company’s office,
instead of crossing the entire city during the day.
Nevertheless, this is a premiere on the romanian
office building market that allows the business
people to stay focused on their activity.” declares Liviu
Tudor, the president and founder of Genesis Property.
The facilities that West Gate had allowed the investor
to quickly create this pilot programme for business
accommodation. „Studio One is on the same level
as a 4 stars hotel when it comes to comfort, rooms
size and provided services. We have perfected the
internal flows for 12 months, in order to provide the
best services for our clients. Now we may say it offers
a complete experience.” adds Cristian Slave, General
Manager of Studio One.
Besides the accommodation unit, the entire complex
offers its 10.000 daily customers an entire range of
services – parking spaces (over 800 places), restaurants
and fast-food, supermarket, pharmacy, club, 3
coffee-shops, a library, space for events, car-wash,
a dry cleaning unit, fitness area, tennis court and
outdoor relaxation spaces. „It is a city within the city.
All this happens inside our huge green space (15.000
sqm), like no other business park has.” said Liviu Tudor.
By the end of this summer, the facilities will be completed
with another premiere – the first outdoor pool surrounded
by a running / rollerblade track and situated inside a
business park. The guests will be able to recharge their
batteries before starting a meeting – either run around
the pool or swim in the morning.
Currently, West Gate Business Park has a 100% occupancy
rate and hosts international companies such as Societe
Generale European Business Services, Accenture, Alpha
Bank, Carestream, Citi, Dacia-Renault, Ericsson, Siemens,
Panasonic and WNS. Genesis Property is a real-estate development
company, with over 15 years of experience on
the local market. The company developed Novo Park and
West Gate Business Park, totalizing a leasable area
of 150.000 sqm Class A office spaces.
Genesis Property is also the developer of the first
privately owned student campus in Romania, West Gate
Studios, that has 800 rentable studios.
The total investment made by Genesis Property in
Romania rises over 400 million Euros.
Daniel Ben-Yehuda
General Manager Sheraton Bucharest
Since 2014, Daniel Ben-Yehuda is the
General Manager of the Sheraton Hotel
Bucharest. He first came to Romania
in 2005, to take over the management
of Best Western Parc and later on to
coordinate the hotel’s transformation
in Ramada Parc.
We invited Daniel Ben-Yehuda to a
discussion about his career, the
evolution of the hospitality industry
and his view on sustainable luxury.
Please tell us a few words about your career in
the hospitality industry. When did you join the
Sheraton Bucharest Hotel?
Daniel Ben-Yehuda: I have been working for
Sheraton since 2000. I started in a big resort in
Elad – Israel - as Resident Manager, having this
position for 3 years. Between 2003 and 2005 I
have managed Sheraton Hotel in French Polinesia
and, starting with 2005, I moved to Bucharest,
where I have been managing 2 hotels of 4,
respectively 3 Star in the north part of the city.
Since 2014 I am the General Manager of
Sheraton Bucharest Hotel. I took over the
hotel's management when Starwood Hotels
& Resorts Worldwide entered the local
market, through a franchise contract with
Grand Plaza Hotel. It was then when the
hotel started the transformation process.
After almost one year and an investment of
over 6 million Euro, the renovation project
was ready and the first local Sheraton Hotel
was launched.
42

What are the main features that set your hotel
apart from the competition?
D.B-Y.: At Sheraton, our guests can explore the
genuine comfort and the higher level of services
of our 270 luxurious rooms & suites, including a
Presidential Suite and 27 smart executive suites,
all equipped with our signature Sheraton Sleep
Experience® Bed, 42 inch flat screen TV and inroom
entertainment, relaxing window corners,
from where you can admire a spectacular city view
and amazing sunsets on clear sky days.
Everything they need for an effortless stay
awaits at the Sheraton Club and within the elegant
restaurants, Avalon and Benihana Japanese
Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, which combine the best
ingredients with the latest cooking techniques, to
deliver amazing taste sensations.
We know how important it is to escape from
routine and relax, so we recently launched the
Skyview Pool and SPA, a true oasis with a beautiful
panorama both over the city and the blue sky. The
pool is provided with a special system that allows
you to swim against the current of air or water,
three hydro massage areas and also two fountains
for cervical massage. All these in a heated water
pool, at the perfect temperature. For a complete
pampering session, we have also prepared a variety
of wellness & SPA treatments.
The attention to details is part of our philosophy
of making a closer connection to our guests needs
and interests.
What are your previsions for the hotel
industry in the following years?
D.B-Y.: Romania went into a deep economic crisis
between 2008 & 2013 and since then, the hotel industry
is trying to go back to where it was before.
We foresee a positive evolution for the following
period and a natural growth of hotel industry.
Nowadays, sustainability is in high demand, particularly
amongst millennials. Will luxury hotels
go green in the future?
D.B-Y.: Sustainability is a big demand also in the
hotel industry. Sheraton Bucharest Hotel is committed
to driving sustainability into the operations
while exceeding its guests’ expectations. We are
following the trend and we have been implementing
various sustainable politics: Make a Green
Choice program (Make a Green Choice (MAGC) is
our guest-facing sustainability and loyalty program
in which our guests can choose to help
reduce the environmental footprint. Any guest at
a participating SPG hotel can Make a Green Choice
by forgoing full housekeeping for up to three days
in a row (excluding their check-out day). For each
night a guest opts into MAGC, they receive 250-500
Starpoints or a $5/5€ Food & Beverage voucher,
while helping to reduce the use of water, energy
and chemicals; we are recycling and avoiding plastic
in the hotel (using paper cups & glass as much
as possible).
In the near future, the luxury hotels will try to lead
this trend.
QUICK QUESTIONS:
Describe the Sheraton experience in three
Osteria Francescana
THE BEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD FOR 2018
This year, culinary masterminds from five continents gathered in Bilbao, Spain, for the
famous award ceremony that each year names the best 50 restaurants in the world.
This year’s champion was Italy’s famous Osteria Francescana and head chef
Massimo Bottura, whose amazing recipes brought him back to the top spot,
which he first held in 2016.
46

Osteria Fancescana owns 3 Michelin stars and is known
for its original dishes and playful approach to classic
cuisine.
Bottura’s famous creations includes dishes such as
“Autumn in New York” or the famous dessert “Oops, I
Dropped the Lemon Tart”, a deconstructed lemon tart
that the chef thinks it embodies “perfect imperfection”.
“We built this together.
I’m not going to
disappoint you, I’m going
to show the world that
chefs in 2018 are much
more than the sum of their
recipes, if we stay
together.” said Bottura.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is organized and
compiled by William Reed Business Media. It is created
from the votes of more than 1,000 restaurateurs, chefs,
food writers, and gastronomes.
Bottura is not only an extremely talented chef, he is
also an art lover and more recently, he has become
known for Food for Soul, an international non-profit
organization, original from Milan, that feeds the
homeless and hungry.
During his acceptance speech, which he delivered
on stage with his wife Lara Gilmore, Bottura took the
chance to once again underline the fact that chefs
and everyone in the restaurant business must realize
that they have the power to change the world. At
the press conference following his win, he said: “I am
going to use this spotlight to make even stronger the
changes there are going to be [..] Feed the planet.
Fight waste. […] We have to involve all the community
of chefs … pushing the spotlight you have to make the
invisible visible is extremely important.”.
The second position of the top was claimed by El Celler
de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, while Mirazur in Menton,
France, took home the third place. Eleven Madison
Park, last year’s winner, was bumped all the way to the
fourth position, mostly due to being closed part of the
year for renovations.
France finished the year with five restaurants in the
top, two of them situated in top ten. England and
Italy each had four restaurants in the top, while Peru
claimed three positions, two of them in top seven.
The restaurant Hiša Franko in Slovenia, owned by Ana
Roš (The World’s Best Female Chef Award, 2017), is the
only restaurant from Central & Eastern Europe ranked
in the top, as number 48.
LacertA winery,
the story behind the perfect wine
When and how did the Lacerta story begin?
Walter Friedl: It all started with me looking for a
good glass of local wine 2002 in Bucharest........
Without success.
The name Lacerta has a very interesting meaning
behind it. Could you tell us more about it?
W.F.: The LacertA – “The Lizard” in Latin – is our
mascot. Our nearly 10.000 visitors per year from
all over the world can watch the beautiful creatures
running around in our vineyard. They are
cute and a sign that our wine-garden is an ecologically
friendly territory. We love these animals.
That was the reason we “borrowed” their name
for our wines.
Just like Bordeaux and Tuscany, the LacertA
winery stretches along the 45th parallel, in
a region called Dealu Mare. Here, the springs
are wet and the autumns are long, dry and
sunny, allowing the vineyards to produce
wines with a rich, complex, and silken taste.
Walter Friedl, LacertA winery's partner, told us
more about the story behind it.
Why Romania? Can we compete with wine
making countries such as France or Italy?
W.F.: Great red and white wines had been produced
in our wine region long before France and
Italy. The “terroir” here is known as one of the
best wine regions in the world. Rains in spring,
snow in winter and dry and very long and sunny
autumns are a guarantee for world class wines
with a full body and very aromatic and elegant
taste. Blind tastes at several international competitions
showed us that our wines can easily
compete with the top wines of France and Italy.
Of course, a lot has to be done to let the wine
connoisseurs in the world know about it. But we
are working on it. We export already in 19 countries
including Japan and China.
50

51

What is your favourite type of wine?
W.F.: The wine which our clients love. Currently it is
our flagship red wine Cuvee IX, a wonderful blend
of the best red wines we have including the local
Feteasca Neagra (“Black Maiden Wine”). Of course,
our “white wine made out of red grapes” – “Blanc de
Noir” - is very popular and I love this wine personally
a lot.
What is your idea of a day well spent?
W.F.: Being together with my wife and my friends and
nice food prepared by a talented chef and the fitting
wines. Preferable in a region which is not too cold
and safe. A “nice to have” would be a good view. Of
course, great music would be nice like from my compatriot
Wolfgang Amadeus, but I wouldn’t mind if it
is Sting or Elton John. A swimming pool or a clean,
sandy beach? Why not? Fun, of course!
Please no stories about politics, religion or money.....
What do you like best about Romania?
W.F.: The humor of the population. And that they
don’t take themselves too seriously. They can laugh
about themselves. Plus, the beautiful countryside.
Especially our wine region “Dealu Mare”, which is
only an hour away from the International Airport of
Bucharest.
This is a unique paradise.
Any future plans for Lacerta?
W.F.: Our master plan is to improve the quality of
our wines even more. Daily. We are listening to our
clients. We learn a lot from them about how we can
fulfill this target.
52

LEONIDAS
taking further the legacy
of the master-chocolatier
For four generations now, Leonidas has been
crafting with tireless passion and respect for
tradition the best pralines.
Their recipe for success? Impeccable freshness
and always using chocolate made of 100% pure
cocoa butter.
From fresh butter, to Morello cherries from
the Périgord, almonds from Italy and Valencias
oranges, Leonidas’s variety of ingredients
used in each praline recipe are sure to please
even the most pretentious ones.
We had the chance to discuss with
Ion Codreanu, master franchiser of Leonidas,
about chocolate, early beginnings and future
plans.
How did the story of Leonidas begin in Romania?
I.C.: Before 2009 there was a single Leonidas representative
on the local market. That was the year in which I took matters
into my own hands. I adopted a whole new business strategy,
changing the way Leonidas approached the local market.
I initially went for the corporate market together with opening
a flag-ship store in the most commercial area of Bucharest
(Dorobanți). The next stage was to approach other markets in
major cities of Romania (Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara). Currently,
we are at the third development phase: market consolidation,
increase authentic consumption for the chocolate lovers and
– of course – consolidating and expanding the LCC concept
(specialties chocolate drinks, with therases) in Bucharest and
other locations.
53

What were the main challenges and opportunities?
I.C.: Educating the market was and still is the
most challenging part. We constantly organized
PR events, tasting “parties”, grand opening
events, we also had the chance to be regularly
approached by the media, we did corporate
events and also partnered with prestigious
cultural events. All these because we really
believe that if we have the chance to talk directly
to the consumers and give them just a little
taste of Leonidas – we knew that they will
become Leonidas fans. After all, Leonidas is a
100 year’s old perfected brand. Impossible to
resist.
This is the way we increased our Leonidas
community, with chocolate lovers coming to us
to buy for them or for their closest friends.
Our opportunity was that we knew of the
existence of an increasing demand in quality
chocolate products. And the offer was either
limited or too expensive. So we identified this
market niche, delivering professional services,
not only products. We built our own story
around the famous Leonidas brand.
What’s next for Leonidas? Do you plan on expanding
your network?
I.C.: We will continue to expand to the developing
cities in Romania, together with the
consolidation of our existing network.
Our target is to become a landmark on the
quality chocolate segment, quality and stylish
corporate gifts market and also on the chocolate
and coffee shops segment.
Which is the most interesting praline assortment
from Leonidas?
I.C.: First of all, I have to say that we have over
100 pralines in our offer. All of them are made in
Belgium, based on recipes from the best chocolatiers
in the world. 100% cocoa butter, without
frozen products and only the finest ingredients.
Thus being said, I want to state out that all of the
pralines are more than interesting. Each and one
of them has its own personality and story.
Manon Café is the most famous of our offer. This
is the real Diva of Leonidas, celebrated all over
the world. Even in Japan, Manon Café has its
adapted recipe, because of the local regulations.
But besides the renowned pralines, I have to
admire the new Leonidas trend, with some of the
most intriguing aromas and ingredients: balsamic
vinegar, sesame, elderflowers, passion fruit,
lavender, violet ganache, just to name a few.
Which praline assortments do clients preffer
the most?
I.C.: Usually, the preferred pralines are with milk
chocolate, but also with dark chocolate, but with
low cocoa contain (54%). The classics fillings
are always wanted (vanilla, ganache, cherries,
bananas, butter or cream based pralines. But,
in the last months we had a constant demand
increase for other assortments, with unique
fillings: balsamic vinegar, sesame, elderflowers,
passion fruit, lavender, violet ganache. This is a
result of our tasting events in which we always
celebrate the new assortments and spread the
story of each of them. The chocolate lovers
become attached to their preferred pralines and
the come back for more.
Transylvania
a land of magic
56
Right in the heart of Romania, guarded by the high peaks of the Carpathian Mountains,
lies a land blessed by nature, Transylvania.
Home to many legends, mysterious castles, fortresses and churches, medieval festivals
and beautiful traditions, this picturesque land is well known for its remote Saxon villages,
charming cities and natural reserves.
Probably the most vocal admirer of Transylvania is Prince Charles, who doesn’t miss any
chance to speak warmly about the region and to encourage people to travel to Romania.
If Transylvania is on your list for an upcoming trip, we recommend you stay in one of the
guesthouses below, in order to live the Transylvanian experience to the fullest.

Kálnoky Castle
Micloșoara, Covasna
The story of the castle starts in the XVII century,
when Kálnoky István III first mentions the construction
of a house in Micloșoara. The house was
meant to be a hunting manor, and it combines
Renaissance, Baroque and neo-Classical architecture.
The 19th-century main guesthouse, or Upper
House, has two stories and a cellar. Drinks are
served in a drawing room with high-backed armchairs,
next to a fireplace with white and blue tiles
that bear the Kálnoky emblem. Meals are served
in the cellar on a long wooden table in front of an
open fire.
Nearby there are numerous castles, former manors
and fortified medieval churches to visit as well
as crumbling Saxon villages, home to members of
Romania's ethnic German minority for 800 years.
The money raised from Count Kalnoky's Estate
contribute to the development of Transylvania and
the preservation of its cultural and natural heritage,
in direct collaboration with The Prince
of Wales’s Foundation in Romania.
Cincșor Guest House
Cincșor
Built in 1910 in the Art Nouveau Style and restored
in 2014, this former Protestant Saxon School in
Cincșor was turned into a guesthouse that offers
the perfect getaway and relaxation for those who
want to live the authentic Transylvanian experience.
Apart from the 4 bedrooms, the guesthouse
features a recreation area in the chimney room,
a breath-taking library room and a well-lit porch
designed as a dining area.
This place is also fit for those who love to discover
various cuisines. All dishes served at Cincșor
are made using only local and carefully selected
ingredients and they are inspired from old Romanian,
Hungarian and Saxon recipes.
The Apafi Manor
Mălâncrav, Sibiu
Above the small village of Mălâncrav, the Apafi
Manor is an example of recovery and protection
of local architectural heritage. Built in the early
XVII century by the Apafi noble family, the manor
was opened once again in 2007 after extensive
renovation.
British designer David Mlinaric oversaw the interior
design, respecting the original spirit: most of
the objects inside the rooms of the manor are of
local provenience, either originally found inside
the manor, or brought from the nearby villages.
You can choose from five generous rooms, beautifully
furnished with a mix of modern and traditional
pieces and you must visit the library, one of
the central spaces of the manor.
Biertan
One of Transylvania’s seven Saxon Unesco World Heritage
villages, Biertan feels like a place that was frozen in time.
On the village’s streets you can still find horse-drawn carts,
while in the cobbled village square, artisans still gather to
trade their products.
Meanwhile, right in the heart of the village, a 15th Century
fortified church with nine fortification towers overlooks the
surroundings as a silent guardian.
There are many stories related to this church, but one of them
is by far the most peculiar one. Inside the church grounds,
there is a small building with a room barely larger than a
pantry. For over 300 years, couples whose marriages were
failing, were locked inside this room for six weeks by the
local bishop, in hope that they would rekindle their relationship
and avoid divorce. As strange as it may seem, the idea
was rather successful, since during those 300 years, there
was only one divorce in Biertan.
The Clay Castle of
the Valley of Fairies
Only 40 km from Sibiu, an unusually shaped castle will surely catch your
attention. The Clay Castle of the Valley of Fairies, reminiscent of a Hobbit’s
house, or a setting in one of the Grimm brothers’ novels, is made entirely
from natural materials.
The walls were made of a mixture of earth, water, clay, straws and sand,
while the towers were made of river stone. The place was built by a couple
who wanted to fulfil their dream of living in the countryside and it is
expected to also function as a hotel. The rooms will also feature only
natural and local materials and during the winter time, they will be heated
with simple wood fires.
Other places not to miss in Transylvania:
Brașov
Known as “Kronstadt” or “The City of the
Crown”, Brașov is one of the most cosmopolite
cities of Transylvania. The architecture, the
numerous museums, the Black Church – the
largest Gothic Church in Eastern Europe, the
First Romanian School, the Rope Street – the
narrowest streets in Europe and Saint Nicholas
Church are just some of the city attraction.
Alba Iulia Carolina Citadel
Located in Alba Iulia, this is a precious symbol
of Romania and the place where the Great
Unification took place almost 100 years ago,
on December 1st.
The city features one of the most spectacular
medieval citadels in the country. Don’t miss the
changing of the guard, which takes place every
day at 11:00 AM, particularly in the summertime,
when it becomes spectacular.
Râșnov Fortress
20 minutes’ drive from Bran Castle you can find one of
the best preserved medieval fortresses built by peasants.
Condé Nast Traveller included Râșnov Fortress in its Top 10
Most Beautiful Snow Castles in the World, so make sure not
to miss it.
60
Bran Castle
The Bran Castle has an intriguing story related to the
royal family of Romania and of course, is home to the
legend of Count Dracula. They say that some cloves of
garlic might come in handy if you plan to visit Dracula’s
Castle…particularly on Halloween.
Fortified churches
Transilvania is very popular for its rural landscape and
Saxon legacy. If you would like to spend an authentic
cultural holiday, spend the night in a local guesthouse,
try the local foods and live the simple but genuinely
beautiful rural lifestyle. You will find many beautiful
fortified churches on your path, including Viscri Fortified
Church, dating from approx. 1100.
Corvinus Castle
Also know as the Hunyadi Castle, this place is
the epitome of Gothic Renaissance architectural
style. It is acknowledged as one of the largest
castles in Europe and it is also home to many
legends. One of them says that Vlad the Impaler
was kept here as a prisoner by the Hunyadi
family.

Rediscovering
the glamour of rail travel
There is nothing that matches the magic of a train ride. A hiss of steam, the sound of a whistle
as the train enters the station and the serenity of the travel are just some of the reasons for the
recent renaissance of luxury trains.
Newly redone and beautifully restored, these trains bring back the glamour of the golden days,
when travellers were expected to dress for dinner and elegant waiters served exquisite meals.
If you are longing for such a ride, here are some suggestions:
The Royal Express
JAPAN
Japan’s latest luxury sightseeing train, “The Royal Express,”
runs along the scenic Izu coastline. Izu, with its picturesque
scenery and hot spring spas, is a region that
has been highly celebrated in literature and has many
historical associations.
The Royal Express, known for its elegant royal blue exterior
and gold accents, can carry up to 100 passengers and
it features a dining car, a bar, a children’s play area, live
music on board and even a multipurpose carriage that
can be used for weddings, parties or even art exhibitions.
During the 3-hour ride, the guests are served gourmet
meals, created by celebrated Japanese chefs Michiyo
Kawano and Chikara Yamada.
The Presidential Train
PORTUGAL
The Venice
Simplon-Orient-Express
EUROPE
The list wouldn’t have been complete without the
historic name Orient-Express, which is pretty much
synonymous with luxury train travel. With its polished
wood, sumptuous upholstery and antique fixtures,
the train is the definition of the glamour of the Golden
Age of travel. Belmond's luxury carriages, which
run from London to Paris, Venice and Istanbul, have
perfected the art of travel. Rich details, including fine
fabrics, glossy panelling and soft lighting will surely
take you not just across Europe, but also back in time.
The Golden Eagle
RUSSIA and MONGOLIA
traverses more than 6,800 miles from Moscow to
Vladivostok, with a detour along the shores of Lake
Baikal into Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia. The trip includes
a private viewing of the Kremlin, a glass of Champagne
with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia at
Yekaterinburg, and a traditional Russian cooking class
in Irkutsk, “the Paris of Siberia.”
The best museum exhibits
This summer, Europe’s museum exhibits have a lot to offer. If you’re heading on a trip
to the Old Continent, make sure to include one of these exhibits on your ‘to do’ list.
“CLASSIC BEAUTIES”
at the Hermitage in Amsterdam
Through Jan. 13, 2019
This exhibit features more than 60 sculptures,
paintings and drawings by more than 25 artists,
including Batoni, Canova, Kauffmann, Thorvaldsen,
Mengs. The focus of the collection is the human
body, which has fascinated artists throughout the
centuries. This topic was given a new life in the
mid-eighteenth century, when spectacular archaeological
discoveries of Greco-Roman sculptures were
made in Italy. Artists from all over the world came
to Italy to see the works, which lead to a new movement,
Neoclassicism, dedicated to the depiction
of the human body and its beauty to a whole new
level, pursuing ultimate perfection.
PICASSO, 1932 LOVE, FAME, TRAGEDY
at Tate Modern in London
Through Sep. 9, 2018
Tate Modern’s first solo Picasso exhibition is
a month-by-month journey through the artist’s
prolific “year of wonders”. The 100-plus
works include Girl Before a Mirror and The
Dream, which has never been shown in the
UK before. It also reunites three nudes of his
lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter, for the first time
in 85 years.
with personal items including outfits, letters,
jewellery, cosmetics, medical corsets.
The exhibition also features a few highlights,
such as Frida’s eyebrow pencil, her favourite
lipstick and red nail polish. As Claire Wilcox,
senior curator of fashion at the V&A and
exhibition co-curator said, “this show will
offer a powerful insight into how Frida Kahlo
constructed her own identity”.
life’s sculptures and paintings, from the cubist and surrealist period,
up to his death in the mid-1960s.
watercolours from when he was writing “The Hobbit”,
some previously unseen works and other illustrations.
Atra Doftana
The intercharge network conference 2018
showcased new international trends
in the field of digital mobility
For the sixth year in a row, electric mobility specialist Hubject brought together the most important players
in the mobility, energy and technology sectors, at its own intercharge network conference (icnc) in early June 2018.
This year, more than 1000 international participants from corporations, startups, science, politics, associations
and the media made their way to Berlin, which as a city itself is a showcase for digitalized mobility.
The event’s slogan was “Two Days to Reinvent the Way We Move” and against this backdrop, experts from three
continents discussed the future of mobility. From electric mobility, to autonomous driving, the connected car
and intelligent energy management systems – the conference’s range of topics grew significantly this year,
reflecting the market’s tremendous growth.
For the sixth year in a row, electric mobility
specialist Hubject brought together the most
important players in the mobility, energy and
technology sectors, at its own intercharge network
conference (icnc) in early June 2018. This
year, more than 1000 international participants
from corporations, startups, science, politics,
associations and the media made their way to
Berlin, which as a city itself is a showcase for
digitalized mobility. The event’s slogan was “Two
Days to Reinvent the Way We Move” and against
this backdrop, experts from three continents
discussed the future of mobility. From electric
mobility, to autonomous driving, the connected
car and intelligent energy management systems
– the conference’s range of topics grew significantly
this year, reflecting the market’s tremendous
growth.
Lior Sethon of Mobileye, an Intel Company and the market
leader for autonomous driving, gave the opening keynote. Lior
spoke about the rapid development of autonomous vehicles
and the associated opportunities and risks. In his view, autonomous
vehicles do not necessarily need a constant mobile
internet connection, as many say is a requirement. Instead, the
cars can operate independently and based on hyper-accurate
maps. Mobileye wants to launch a self-driving car in cooperation
with BMW in 2021.
Dr. Hang Yin of the State Grid Corporation of China – the
world’s largest energy supplier – offered an in-depth look at
his country, which is leading the world in the field of electric
mobility. State Grid and other players are hard at work on
expanding China’s charging infrastructure and aim to achieve
charging station coverage of 88 percent by 2020.
69

Host Thomas Daiber from Hubject offered
some insight into his experience with
collaborations between large companies
and start-ups. If they are set up correctly
and there is a good understanding on both
sides regarding the various working practices,
these types of collaborations are often
highly successful. Particularly in what is still
a young market like digital mobility, this can
lead to significantly increased speed and
innovation.
John Rossant, founder of the organisations
LA CoMotion and NewCities, demonstrated
why and how Los Angeles, one of the world’s
principal car cities, is setting the tone in
terms of electrombility and as a smart city
in many respects. This will further intensify
in advance of the Olympic Games which will
be held there in ten years’ time. Los Angeles
will also present innovations in smart city
transportation to a global audience.
However, is not just LA that continues to develop.
In his keynote speech, Darius Moeini,
from NUMA/DATACITY Germany, estimated
that 73% of all people will live in cities by
2050.
Cities therefore need to adapt and become smart. And the
people living in these cities should also think beyond the issue
of mobility. It’s not just about transportation. All aspects of
urban life are, or will be, connected.
The following panels focused on easier charging solutions and
innovations. In the event’s final talk, Jan Aengenvoort from Next
Kraftwerke, Andrei Rotaru from EnergiMine and Val Miftakhov
from eMotorWerks shed some light on what the world of energy
would be like in the future, with aspects like trading green
energy via blockchain, efficient grid utilization thanks to virtual
power plants and smart charging.
The intercharge network conference (icnc) 2018 was a great
success and not just in terms of the numbers. The event once
again resulted in numerous thought-provoking ideas and
inspirations for the market. The term “Digital Mobility” has not
yet fully been brought to life, however. The industry is traveling
down an exciting path. The next progress report will be available
no later than at the icnc 2019 in Berlin.
