Why disinfection is necessary 

• The preservative must be able to control the types of microorganisms 

most commonly present in the intended application. 

• Preservatives are used for the protection of consumers and the 

prevention of product spoilage during the intended and foreseeable use. 

However, they should not replace a faithful production hygiene. 

Contaminations by microorganisms during production have to be 

avoided by recognising and eliminating its sources. 

• Only the combined approach of good preservation and good 

manufacturing praxis (GMP) including suitable cleaning and disinfection 

permit a microbiological safe process.

Production hygiene - generals 

The most important action is to prevent microbial growth in any kind of water 

in direct contact with the produced cosmetics. 

This could be rinsing water in pipes, filters, pumps, vessels, filling lines etc. as 

well as condensing water in storage tanks for raw materials, intermediate 

products and bulk products.

Which products are recommended 

for production hygiene? 

• grotanol ® SR 2 For basic cleaning and disinfection to remove biofilm 

use dosage 0.25 – 0.75% in water 

• grotanol ® 3025 For regular disinfection 

use dosage 0.50 – 1.00% in water

• Broad and balanced spectrum against bacteria, yeast and mould fungi 

• Excellent material compatibility 

• All ingredients comply with Directive 76/768/EEC (EU cosmetic directive)

• No explosion risk – applied as aqueous dilution (compared to ethanol)

grotanol ® 3025 - Application areas 

Intermediate and storage tanks 

Regular cleaning, at least every three months is recommended. 

We suggest to preserve the washing water with 0.5 % grotanol ® 3025. 

The preserved water should also be sprayed onto the surface of the tanks and 

pumps through the whole pipe system incl. pumps and filters. The dilution of 

grotanol ® 3025 is able to preserve the residual water in the whole system. 

To prove its activity it is necessary to leave it in the system until the equipment is 

used again. Rinsing with water usually is not necessary. 



Batch vessels and pipe work 

Add 0.5 % grotanol ® 3025 into last rinsing water. 

Spray and circulate the diluted solution throughout the whole production system 

including pipes, pumps, filters and vessels. 

Discharge the used solution. Rinsing with water usually is not necessary. 

Dilutions of grotanol ® 3025 usually do not interfere with the operation 

of waste water treatment plants. 


grotanol® 3025 - Application areas 

Filling lines 

Add 0.5 % grotanol ® 3025 to last rinsing water. 

Fill some product bottles with the diluted solution. 

Discharge the used solution. Rinsing with water usually is not necessary. 

Floor and sewers 

Sanitise floor and sewers with 1.0 % grotanol ® 3025 solution. 



Cleaning and working tools 

Sanitise with 0.5% grotanol ® 3025 solution. 

The dipping of cleaning and working tools into a 0.5 % aqueous solution of 

grotanol ® 3025 is the best way to prevent microbial growth. 


grotanol ® 3025 – 

check of compatibility 

Rinsing with water usually is not necessary, because grotanol ® 3025 only contain 

actives which are accepted as cosmetic preservatives. Nevertheless, we suggest to 

perform compatibility tests. E.g. proteins can cause discolorations in the presence 

of only small amounts of grotanol ® 3025. In these cases it is necessary to rinse, but 

this only should be done directly before using the equipment. 

Recommended test procedure 

Add 1 % of the disinfectant solution (e.g. a 0.5 % aqueous grotanol ® 3025 solution) 

to the cosmetic product. 

Evaluate visible changes after 1 week. 


How to prepare a disinfectant dilution? 

The easiest way is to prepare a stock solution in a container (perhaps 

an old euxyl ® container). 

E.g. for a 1 % dilution add 10 kg grotanol ® 3025 to 1 m 3 of water 


A solution of grotanol ® 3025 is stable for several months.

Maximum contact time 

Is it possible to leave grotanol ® 3025 solutions in my production facilities for a 

longer period of time? 

Yes, grotanol ® 3025 has an excellent material compatibility. It will be stable 

and will preserve the facilities over a longer period. 


The much better material compatibility of grotanol ® 3025 

is a very important benefit compared to chlorine, which is 

corrosive and stable for only a short time.

Discharge of grotanol ® 3025 solutions 

• All ingredients of grotanol ® 3025 are biodegradable in a sufficient 

dilution rate (below use concentration). 

• General guideline; 1 : 20 dilution of the applied disinfectant solution is 

sufficient to dump into a biological sewage treatment plant.
