Why disinfection is necessary<br />

• The preservative must be able to control the types of microorganisms<br />

most commonly present in the intended application.<br />

• Preservatives are used for the protection of consumers and the<br />

prevention of product spoilage during the intended and foreseeable use.<br />

However, they should not replace a faithful production hygiene.<br />

Contaminations by microorganisms during production have to be<br />

avoided by recognising and eliminating its sources.<br />

• Only the combined approach of good preservation and good<br />

manufacturing praxis (GMP) including suitable cleaning and disinfection<br />

permit a microbiological safe process.<br />

Production hygiene - generals<br />

The most important action is to prevent microbial growth in any kind of water<br />

in direct contact with the produced cosmetics.<br />

This could be rinsing water in pipes, filters, pumps, vessels, filling lines etc. as<br />

well as condensing water in storage tanks for raw materials, intermediate<br />

products and bulk products.<br />

Which products are recommended<br />

for production hygiene?<br />

• grotanol ® SR 2 For basic cleaning and disinfection to remove biofilm<br />

use dosage 0.25 – 0.75% in water<br />

• grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> For regular disinfection<br />

use dosage 0.50 – 1.00% in water<br />

Intermediate and storage tanks<br />

Regular cleaning, at least every three months is recommended.<br />

We suggest to preserve the washing water with 0.5 % grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong>.<br />

The preserved water should also be sprayed onto the surface of the tanks and<br />

pumps through the whole pipe system incl. pumps and filters. The dilution of<br />

grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> is able to preserve the residual water in the whole system.<br />

To prove its activity it is necessary to leave it in the system until the equipment is<br />

used again. Rinsing with water usually is not necessary.<br />

Batch vessels and pipe work<br />

Add 0.5 % grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> into last rinsing water.<br />

Spray and circulate the diluted solution throughout the whole production system<br />

including pipes, pumps, filters and vessels.<br />

Discharge the used solution. Rinsing with water usually is not necessary.<br />

Dilutions of grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> usually do not interfere with the operation<br />

of waste water treatment plants.<br />

Filling lines<br />

Add 0.5 % grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> to last rinsing water.<br />

Fill some product bottles with the diluted solution.<br />

Discharge the used solution. Rinsing with water usually is not necessary.<br />

Floor and sewers<br />

Sanitise floor and sewers with 1.0 % grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> solution.<br />

Cleaning and working tools<br />

Sanitise with 0.5% grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> solution.<br />

The dipping of cleaning and working tools into a 0.5 % aqueous solution of<br />

grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> is the best way to prevent microbial growth.<br />

check of compatibility<br />

Rinsing with water usually is not necessary, because grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> only contain<br />

actives which are accepted as cosmetic preservatives. Nevertheless, we suggest to<br />

perform compatibility tests. E.g. proteins can cause discolorations in the presence<br />

of only small amounts of grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong>. In these cases it is necessary to rinse, but<br />

this only should be done directly before using the equipment.<br />

Recommended test procedure<br />

Add 1 % of the disinfectant solution (e.g. a 0.5 % aqueous grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> solution)<br />

to the cosmetic product.<br />

Evaluate visible changes after 1 week.<br />

How to prepare a disinfectant dilution?<br />

The easiest way is to prepare a stock solution in a container (perhaps<br />

an old euxyl ® container).<br />

E.g. for a 1 % dilution add 10 kg grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> to 1 m 3 of water<br />

A solution of grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> is stable for several months.


Maximum contact time<br />

Is it possible to leave grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> solutions in my production facilities for a<br />

longer period of time?<br />

Yes, grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> has an excellent material compatibility. It will be stable<br />

and will preserve the facilities over a longer period.<br />

The much better material compatibility of grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong><br />

is a very important benefit compared to chlorine, which is<br />

corrosive and stable for only a short time.<br />

Discharge of grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> solutions<br />

• All ingredients of grotanol ® <strong>3025</strong> are biodegradable in a sufficient<br />

dilution rate (below use concentration).<br />

• General guideline; 1 : 20 dilution of the applied disinfectant solution is<br />

sufficient to dump into a biological sewage treatment plant.<br />
