He’s surely got to be a brother from another
mother. His passion for beer and all things surf is
much the same as my own.
Graham Carse and his beautiful wife Gaby are
good friends. Gaby is from South Africa and
Graham is a loveable larrikin from Dunedin and
the master craftsman behind Quarry Beach
Surfboards. He and Gaby always sort me out with
a few boards whenever I visit.
I had known for some time they had a pretty sweet
setup just south of Dunedin so I asked him about it.
Now, I will preface this by saying Carsey is known
for his short, sharp quips
– so you are prepared.

Where is the house roughly situated?
20 minutes south
Who lives there?
Me and Gaby, Louie the dog, 3 x cats – Buster,
George and Loki and Gary the horse. There’s
sheep as well, no names though because they
end up on the bbq - maybe lamb chop, lamb
shank, rack etc. could be amusing. Oh and
there are chickens – same. KFC, McNugget…
What’s the normal daytime/ night temps in
Winter and Summer?
Winter – 0 – 15 degrees
Summer – 15 – 25 + degrees
How often do you get a dusting of snow?
3-5 times per year
The thought of surfing in the snow is my
ultimate dream I am yet to experience.
How big can the surf get out front?
Up to 15 feet.
Knowing Carse understates things, it is
probably a few more feet beyond that.
He doesn’t mind big swells.
Anything else you would like to add that is
unique/ special about the home or where you
live?
15 kilometres of coastline with no-one to surf
with.
That’s enough for me. I will take that as an
invitation. I love the cold and I love Dunedin and
its surrounds. I was also pleased to hear that
whilst he doesn’t have a shaping bay at home,
Carsey is working on a home brew setup.
