Positive Action, Inc. has created four levels of
implementation for the components of the Positive
Action program: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
We are providing these plans to enable you to be as
flexible as possible as you consider your needs, interests,
and resources.
The Levels of Implementation Plans allow program
directors to choose how and when they wish to implement
different components and still remain faithful to
the program. Obviously, program directors can start at
any level they wish. These levels are also useful if schools
wish to grow their Positive Action program over time.
These levels could comprise a four-year plan, easily
adaptable to a five- or ten-year strategic plan, or any
other strategy that works for that school.
Bronze represents the most basic level of program
implementation necessary to obtain
meaningful effects and fidelity to the program.
Silver is a moderate enhancement of the above
program.
Gold is implementation of all of the classroom
curriculum lessons and activities. All of the other
components are activated: drug curriculum, climate
program, Counselor’s Kit, Family Kit, and
Community Kit. Not all activities and lessons in
these components are required, and the site's PA
team can choose activities that are most appropriate
from each component.
Platinum is the highest level: all components of the
Positive Action program are fully implemented. The
lessons and activities are completed, and the maximum
effects will be obtained for multiple outcomes.
To add optional hours, many schools/sites create
their own lessons that may be fitting for their environment.
Positive Action concepts are easily reinforced
throughout the whole school every day,
enhancing the effects of the program.
We provide these guidelines to help you choose the level of
implementation that best meets your goals within the
resources available to you. We realize there are many different
settings, however, we strongly encourage the most
complete implementation possible.
Please remember that the Positive Action program works
for multiple purposes that contribute to the efficiency and
effectiveness of your entire program. The program works to
increase positive behavior such as academic achievement,
attendance, sensibility of belonging to the school and the
community; and simultaneously works to decrease negative
behavior such as violence, suspensions, bullying, dropping
out, truancies, sexual harassment, and drug, alcohol, and
tobacco use. These results are consistently shown because
the program helps students develop a strong, resilient character
and a positive self-concept.
The Positive Action program is comprehensive and
coherent, yet each component can stand alone. The parts
within each component can also stand alone. For example,
the school curriculum is effective as a whole, but
individual lessons are also effective if specific issues need
to be addressed. The program components and their
parts fit together into a cohesive, seamless whole.
At the heart of the program is the Positive Action philosophy:
you feel good about yourself when you do positive
actions. Positive actions are identified as the good
things we do for ourselves and others. Positive actions
address the whole self: the physical, intellectual, social,
and emotional domains. We live in self-reinforcing circles:
our thoughts lead to our actions, which lead to feelings
about ourselves. Those circles, just as our actions,
can be positive or negative. A negative circle can be
interrupted at any point by thinking positive thoughts,
doing positive actions, or enjoying positive feelings.
This philosophy is the foundation for helping students
move into academic achievement, self-responsibility,
emotional and social stability, and a positive self-concept.
The first unit is the foundation for the whole program.
The successive units teach positive actions for the physical,
intellectual, social, and emotional areas. For maximum
effect, units should be taught in sequence, although each
unit or lesson can stand alone for special purposes and still
have a positive effect.
The lessons take approximately 15 minutes each. To achieve fidelity, you can implement the Bronze level with the 20 core lessons to convey the Positive
Action philosophy and main concepts of each unit. However, we suggest additional lessons of your choice to reinforce each unit concept.
Positive Action for Teens was designed to provide lessons and activities for students over a four-year span. Each kit provides a one-year curriculum. Kit I, II,
and IV lessons are presented in three steps: Positive Thoughts (15 minutes), Positive Actions (15 minutes), and Positive Feelings (15 minutes). Each step is a
mini-lesson. All the mini-lessons can be taught together as one longer lesson, or they can be taught in three different, shorter sessions.
For every grade level it is critical to do the following. Unit 1– lessons
related to the philosophy and the circle. Other units–the first lesson. For
the lessons in the Silver column, we have selected those that we think are
most important for most settings. However, if you have special needs, then
feel free to select lessons other than the ones we have selected.
Lessons to Achieve Fidelity
We’ve selected core lessons for Bronze and Silver implementation. It is
critical to do the selected lessons from Unit 1 and at least the first
lesson of each of the other units. FFor the lessons in the Silver column, we
have selected those that we think are most important for most settings.
However, if you have special needs, then feel free to select lessons other than
the ones we have selected.
