Ryde Hockey celebrates new home ground win 

RYDE HUNTERS HILL Hockey Panthers are celebrating 

one of the greatest wins in the club’s history with a 

new two field home ground announced on Friday. 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts and Ryde MP Victor Dominello said the 

two hockey fields are proposed for Christie Park in Macquarie Park with 

the Panthers’ Keith Thompson Field in Macquarie Park to make way for 

the grounds of a new school at the neighbouring former Peter Board High 

School site. 

The Panthers’ Patron and The Weekly Times Managing Editor John F Booth 

AM had lobbied the government to get the extra field our growing number 

of local hockey juniors need and is celebrating the win alongside Club President 

Glen Castensen who described the deal as a landmark in the club’s 80 

year history. 

“This is wonderful news for the Ryde Hockey Club and a landmark achievement 

for the Ryde community,” Mr Castensen said. 

“It is very satisfying to see our player development programs and our reputation 

on the world stage being matched by the proposed relocation to a 

much-needed dual field, first-class hockey centre and home ground.”

Judging started in 2018 Northern 

Districts Local Business Awards 

Finalists named next week 

Entries have closed for the 2018 Northern Districts Local Business 

Awards and judging has commenced for the record number 

of businesses entered this year. 

There’s a perfectly logical reason why Northern Districts business people 

may have a slightly nervous edge to their smiles when new customers 

walk through their door because anonymous judges are visiting finalists. 

The anonymous judges will look at all aspects 

of customer service, including greeting and 

customer acknowledgement, detailed product 

knowledge and value for money. 

They may also look at other aspects of the business, 

such as its website. 

While finalists do not know who the judges are or 

when they will visit, they can submit information 

about themselves to be considered by 

the judges including: the history of the 

business, staff training and motivation, 

work in the local community and 

environmental sustainability efforts as 

well as customer testimonials. 

In the meantime, finalists are also 

busy planning what to wear to the 

awards presentation evening, which 

includes a three-course meal and entertainment 

as well as the announcement 

of the category winners. 

Precedent Productions managing director 

and Awards founder Steve Loe 

said the awards ceremony was something 

that finalists looked forward to 

attending each year. 

“it’s a fun night, where business owners and 

their staff can dress up, relax and enjoy each other’s 

company while celebrating their success,” he 

said.

People To Decide In Greater 

Sydney Outdoor Survey 

The NSW Government is committed to 

delivering more liveable, vibrant places to live 

and work. To achieve this, we are planning 

for the future and investing tens of billions of 

dollars in new and upgraded roads, providing 

more and better schools and hospitals and quality recreation facilities. 

A vibrant community needs places for children to learn and play, for people to exercise 

and come together, close to their homes. However, it is important that the right recreation 

facilities are provided in the right area, so we want to hear from the community to inform 

this process. 

To further understand the current situation and plan for the future, the NSW 

Government will embark on an in-depth study and extensive community consultation to 

determine exactly how and where Sydneysiders use open space and waterways, including 

parks, picnic areas, playgrounds, beaches, dog parks and walking trails. 

The survey is called the Greater Sydney Outdoor Survey. This survey will gather 

information from the community about the different types of uses of open space and 

waterways. This will enable the Office of Open Space and Parklands to determine what 

areas are in need of more usable, green open space. 

The survey will consist of a variety of easy to understand multiple choice questions. It 

will ask questions about casual activities (ie. Not formally organised sporting activities) 

such as walking, hiking, jogging, visiting a playground, having a picnic, cycling, relaxation, 

or gathering in outdoor public spaces such for a family BBQ. 

The survey will gather information from the community by asking questions such as: 

• Where you have done these activities 

• How often do you do these activities 

• Who have you done the activities with 

• Are there any barriers that prevent you from participating in casual activities 

• How often do you visit parks and waterways (including harbour, beaches, rivers) 

• How you get to your local park or waterway 

• How long it takes to travel to your local park or waterway 

The Greater Sydney Outdoor Survey will be open for four weeks, from Friday 22nd June 

to Friday 20th July and will be available in English, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, 

Korean, Hindi and Greek. 

Upon completion of the survey, a comprehensive report will be produced that will 

clearly outline the changing ways Sydneysiders use open space and waterways. This report 

will assist with the future planning of open space and recreation provision across Greater 

Sydney.

Learning English in and out of Classrooms 

At the Eastwood Uniting Church 

English classes, students are taught 

to read, write and speak - on a whole 

range of topics from Australian history, 

landmarks, culture, practices, to practical 

must-knows like visits to the doctor 

and dentist; visiting a restaurant or 

shopping, catching the train or ferry, 

and more. 

Apart from lessons in the classrooms, 

students and teachers go on the occasional 

excursions around Sydney to 

learn, relax and connect. 

On Monday June 4, on a half-sunny 

winter’s day, the Intermediate Class students 

and teachers took such a trip, as 

part of their lessons about Sydney’s famous 

landmarks, by ferry. 

The lead teacher, Val Bird, describes 

the journey: “We rode on the ferry along 

Parramatta River and enjoyed views on 

the banks and Gladesville Bridge. At Circular 

Quay, we took a good photo with 

the Opera House in the background. 

Then it was off to The Rocks with all 

the interesting old buildings and shops, 

followed by a picnic lunch and exploring 

the Museum of Contemporary Arts. 

It was fun letting the students see the 

various landmarks that they had studied 

in class.” 

On returning, the students are encouraged 

to write about their experience. 

Some of these experiences will grow into 

personal stories to be published as part 

of Our Stories, an anthology, now into its 

second edition. 

The benefits derived are best summed 

up in the students’ own words: “We 

learn about old, historical buildings”; “I 

was very happy, when my teachers and 

classmates went together”; “We talked, 

watched the big cruise ship and sailing 

boats and beautiful waters”; and “Everyone 

was happy. We are looking forward 

to the next excursion.” 

The EUC English class volunteers, under 

the leadership of Reverend Marion 

Gledhill, (recently awarded an OAM for 

her decades of tireless contributions to 

the church, families and communities), 

strive to create a multicultural community 

that learns, plays and grows together, 

as well as finding new meaning in their 

retirement years.

Intermediate and Advanced classes,

Immigration 

Disasters? 

Dear Sir, 

In recent days the 

federal government 

proudly announced that 

the immigration intake 

has been reduced by 

about 10 percent mainly 

due to a large extent a 

crackdown on the so 

called “skilled” migration 

program. 

Too little too late you 

boofheads. 

In my opinion and 

based on information given 

to me whilst a serving 

government officer this 

program was easily rorted 

and exploited. 

I heard of supposed 

kickbacks of tens of thousands 

of dollars to unscrupulous 

employers for 

sponsorship and eventual 

citizenship. 

The main geographic areas 

these migrants came 

from I was informed were 

the Indian sub continent 

and Asia. 

I have been writing to 

this paper for years warning 

of these immigration 

scams and rorts and have 

even reported my concerns 

to the immigration 

department for investigation. 

I have clearly stated 

how supposed “skilled” 

migrants have entered 

our country without very 

thorough scrutiny and 

regular follow up checks. 

I have expressed my 

view that there are thousands 

upon thousands 

of so called “skilled” migrants 

who are not working 

in their chosen field, 

instead, driving taxis, delivering 

pizzas, working in 

retail etc. etc. 

These are jobs that 

should be filled by our 

own chronically unemployed 

and underemployed 

people. 

Australian citizenships 

one of the most prized in 

the world were handed 

out like confetti. 

When will our useless 

politicians come to the realisation 

that their recent 

immigration policies have 

been to a large extent a 

disaster not only on the 

assimilation and acceptance 

front but an assault 

on the quality of life we 

grew up with. 

The evidence is there 

for all to see from the destruction 

of character of 

so many suburbs, cranes 

and holes in the ground 

everywhere to developments 

now resembling 

Hong Kong and Shanghai. 

People of Anglo Saxon 

background deserting 

suburbs, rotten infrastructure 

and transport 

that can’t cope, all fraying 

the nerves. 

Still these pampered 

politicians persist with 

their policies because 

we are the fools that vote 

them in.

Changing face of Gladesville 

To The POINT 

with CHRIS SCHOFIELD 

IT IS no exaggeration to 

state that Gladesville is 

going through its greatest 

transformation in its 

200-year long history. 

Everywhere you look, 

buildings are being torn 

down and new structures 

taking their place. 

And yet there is more to 

come. 

It has become a focus for 

developers as they seek to 

capitalise on the need to 

cope with the increasing 

population of urban Sydney. 

It is a far cry from the 

Gladesville of old which 

reflected a way of life 

which has gone for ever. 

Gladesville is steeped in 

Australian colonial history. 

Taking its name from 

emancipated convict John 

Glade, the suburb grew 

into a prime dormitory 

location for Sydney city 

workers and their families. 

As people moved in 

and made the place their 

home, so too shops 

sprang up along Victoria 

Road to service their daily 

needs.

GLADESVILLE Mental 

Asylum was established 

and was to become a pioneering 

psychiatric hospital. 

In short, a community 

was born. 

In recent years, those 

who have lived in the area 

for a long time have seen 

a gradual deterioration in 

the spirit of the suburb. 

The heavy traffic which 

traverses Victoria Road 

have been in too much of 

a hurry on their way to and 

from Sydney centre and 

Parramatta, and all points 

in between, to pay much 

attention to what has been 

happening along Gladesville’s 

main strip. 

The pedestrian safety 

barrier which was erected 

in the middle of Victoria 

Road seemed to be a 

metaphor for the division 

of Hunters Hill Council’s 

area on the northern side 

and Ryde City Council’s 

jurisdiction on the other. 

Recently, I was privileged 

to be appointed to be a 

community representative 

on Gladesville Main Street 

Committee, an initiative of 

Hunters Hill Council with 

the support of Ryde City 

Council. Meetings are 

held at least quarterly at 

Gladesville Library. 

As well as representatives 

drawn from residents 

and the business community, 

the meetings are attended 

by councillors and 

staff from both councils. 

The aim of the group is 

for the councils to provide 

updates on changes and 

developments in the area. 

It is a worthy democratic 

channel for the exchange 

of information and views.

I HAVE sensed that 

those attending from the 

two councils are fully committed 

to looking at ways 

of working together to create 

a better environment. 

Such co-ordinated planning 

must be worthwhile 

and supported. What is 

also important is that the 

two councils make available 

relevant information 

in a timely manner to the 

community so that everyone 

can be kept abreast of 

what is happening. 

To this end, the Main 

Street Committee has 

been focussed on exploring 

improved methods 

of communicating with 

the community, whether 

through council websites, 

newsletters, public meetings, 

social media and the 

local press. 

This has now to be translated 

into action.

IN THE past few weeks 

I was in Europe and appreciated 

the community 

feel of enjoying a coffee at 

a pavement cafe in one of 

Paris’s tree-lined squares. 

I noted that each cafe’s 

tables and chairs face outwards 

so that everyone 

can soak up the collective 

ambience. While it would 

be fanciful to think that 

Gladesville could emulate 

such an atmosphere, 

it would be good to hold 

fast to the concept that 

improved community facilities 

could be absorbed 

into the harmonised development 

of the suburb. 

I note the good vibes 

created within the outdoor 

restaurant section of Top 

Ryde Shopping Centre. 

Maybe it is not too late to 

reinvigorate the community 

feeling that appears to 

have been fast disappearing 

in Gladesville. 

If the councils are able to 

work together to achieve 

this, then it is a win-win 

situation not just for residents 

and visitors but for 

shops and local businesses 

as well. 

We can only hope that 

such a brighter tomorrow 

is possible, and Gladesville 

can go on to flourish 

for at least another 200 

years.

Vienna Cottage Hunters 

Hill Verandah Restoration 

THE National Trust Vienna Cottage Committee has initiated a project to 

restore the front verandah of Vienna Cottage. 

Vienna Cottage is an 

1871 stone workingman’s 

cottage acquired by the 

National Trust in 1984 

and managed as a house 

museum and community 

centre by a local voluntary 

committee. 

The front verandah is 

subject to significant subsidence 

and with 3000 

visitors to the cottage each 

year correcting this problem 

is essential for ensuring 

the cottage continues 

to be available to the community. 

The cost of the project 

will be $55,000 of which 

the Vienna Committee will 

be providing $10,000 and 

application will be made 

for government grants to 

assist with the project.

Landmark win for Ryde Hockey Club 

Panthers secure two new 

fields at Christie Park 

THE HOME of the Ryde Hunters Hill Hockey Panthers in Macquarie Park 

is to be demolished to make way for a new school in a proposed deal 

which will see it replaced by two new hockey fields at Christie Park. 

The fate of the Keith 

Thompson Field was announced 

last Friday by 

Lane Cove MP Anthony 

Roberts and Ryde MP 

Victor Dominello who said 

the state government will 

seek to buy vacant land 

next to the adjoining former 

Peter Board High 

School to build the new 

high school and possibly 

a primary school. 

The two MPs stopped 

short of revealing the cost 

of the deal, estimated to 

be worth millions of dollars. 

The announcement was 

welcomed by Panthers 

Club President Glen Castensen 

who described it 

as a landmark win. 

Mr Dominello said 

Christie Park has been 

identified as the “preferred 

location” and his 

hope is that money will 

be made available to 

have both schools built 

within four years. 

He said the community 

will have a say in the new 

school’s name and he assured 

hockey players the 

new fields would have 

adequate parking and facilities. 

“The current site will be 

redeveloped into a new 

high school and the relocation 

will provide the 

NSW Government with 

greater opportunity to 

expand the educational 

offerings,” Mr Dominello 

said. 

“Hockey is a much 

loved sport in the community, 

so it makes sense 

to provide players and 

supporters with a more 

modern, fit-for-purpose 

facility,” 

“More and more families 

are calling Ryde 

home and a new site will 

help cater for increased 

growth.” 

Mr Robert’s blamed 

previous Labor governments 

for the closure of 

Peter Board High School 

and described the announcement 

as a buyback. 

“The previous Labor 

government failed to 

sell off Hunters Hill High 

School so it sold off this 

school instead,” he said. 

Nearby Christie Park is 

home to many of Ryde’s 

junior and women’s soccer 

teams and Mr Roberts 

said it made sense to 

relocate hockey there. 

“It will now be easier for 

mums and dads to take 

their children to hockey, 

as well as soccer.” 

The two MPs said 

the announced deal is 

backed by a memorandum 

of understanding 

between the government 

and the club. 

“We are committed to 

investing in grassroots 

sporting facilities that 

promote healthy living 

and improve quality of life 

and this Memorandum 

brings us a step closer to 

delivering on our promise,” 

Mr Roberts said. 

Mr Castensen said the

had seen some great 

days since it was opened 

in 1994 which has produced 

champions and 

was an Olympic training 

venue but could not accommodate 

the recent 

growth in Hockey’s popularity. 

“This is a wonderful day 

for the Ryde Hockey Club 

and a landmark achievement 

for the community 

of Ryde,” he said. 

“Our Club has been a 

strong and inclusive part 

of the district for over 80 

years and with today’s 

announcement by the 

Ministers, our engagement 

with the community 

will continue for many, 

many more decades to 

come.”

Importance of skin 

cancer check ups 

EASTWOOD based medical specialist Dr Peter Kim (pictured) this week warns TWT readers of the 

importance of protecting our skin from skin cancers and melanoma. 

Q: What is a skin cancer? 

A: There are over a dozen 

different types of skin cells 

in the skin. Each one of 

these skin cells can turn 

into cancer – whether it is 

genetic or due to environmental 

influences. 

Luckily, there is only 

three type of skin cells that 

turns into a common skin 

cancer – Melanoma, squamous 

cell carcinoma and 

basal cell carcinoma. 

Q: What is a melanoma? 

A: The melanocyte is a 

pigment-producing cells. 

When they become cancerous, 

they are called 

melanoma. 

Melanoma leaks into 

lymphatics spread to the 

lymph glands, and then to 

the rest of the body. This 

is aggressive cancer. That 

is why the early diagnosis 

is important. Melanoma 

can be cured If we pick it 

up early. 

Definitive diagnosis for a 

Melanoma is a skin biopsy. 

In experienced hands, a 

skin biopsy is literally a 

1-minute procedure. 

After confirming the diagnosis, 

a Melanoma is 

then excised. 

If the cancer is histopathologically 

confirmed 

to have a clear margin, 

then we can say it has 

been cured. 

Although a regular follow 

up is needed to ensure that 

there is no residual cancer, 

as some melanomas can 

be multifocal – meaning 

we might have excised 

one focus but there may 

be a dormant focus that 

is not visible at the time 

of surgery. In most cases, 

a single surgery will cure it 

and this can be safely performed 

at the minor ops 

clinic. Initially a 3 month 

follow up is recommended 

for the first 12 months and, 

if there is no sign of recurrence, 

then annual skin 

check is recommended. 

If you had a melanoma, it 

will be good for you to ask 

your family members to 

have a skin check. Some 

melanomas tend to run 

in the family. I have had 

a case where I have removed 

melanoma from a 

grandpa, the patient, and 

his son. 

Bigger and more aggressive 

melanomas need to 

be referred to the Melanoma 

Unit. 

If the melanoma reaches 

certain size, depth and 

is an aggressive variant, 

then we need to assess 

whether it has spread to 

anywhere else. 

At this stage, you will be 

referred to the melanoma 

clinic. They specialise in 

performing a test called 

“Sentinel lymph node 

biopsy”. This test will 

check whether melanoma 

has spread to the lymph 

glands. If they have not 

speeded, then the treat- 

ment is finished. But if they 

have, you may be offered 

to have additional surgeries 

and treatments. 

Unfortunately, some melanomas 

when diagnosed 

late have already spread 

to the body organs. If the 

melanoma has gone beyond 

lymph glands to the 

organs, bone or brain, then 

the prognosis is rather 

glim. There is no treatment 

that can help them to cure 

it at the moment. There are 

numerous promising new 

exciting treatments but, for 

now, palliative treatment is 

the most probable treatment 

option. 

Melanoma typically present 

as a freckle or a mole. 

They are frequently present 

in the body area that 

is sun-exposed. It typically 

grows and has more than 

one color. They look irregular 

and tend to stand 

out when you compare to 

the other freckles or spots. 

Self-diagnosis is often not 

reliable at an early stage. 

However, the warning 

signs are that if you have 

a freckle or mole that is 

growing in size and changing 

colour, they become an 

ulcer and does not heal, 

and they look very different 

from the other spots 

you have, it is best to have 

it professionally checked. 

Melanoma is definitely 

one of those skin cancer 

types where early diagnosis 

will definitely save your 

life.

August 22 from 6pm 

and the topic for this 

seminar will be the Nature 

and Treatment of 

Adolescent Depression.

How to avoid the pain that comes with 

your bank increasing variable rates

IT’S official - nothing’s 

more annoying 

than banks increasing 

their variable rates 

on you and everyone 

else while blaming increased 

funding costs. 

Notwithstanding the 

recent Reserve bank decision 

to leave the ‘cash 

rate’ at 1.50%, they’ve 

just done it again. 

AMP, Bank of Queensland, 

IMB and ING all 

decided they’d hurt existing 

clients by increasing 

variable rates. The 

majors, to date, have 

absorbed the increased 

funding costs in wholesale 

markets, but we’re 

certainly watching this 

space. 

So how can you avoid 

being impacted by this? 

Obviously, fixing your 

interest rate not only 

protects you against 

RBA movements to 

the cash rate, but also 

against the out-of-cycle 

increases the banks decide 

to hit you with every 

now and then. 

You can fix the rate on 

your home loan for two 

years at 3.65% or for 

three years at 3.79%. 

That will be your rate 

for the fixed term irrespective 

of the banks 

crying poor. 

And for some of you, 

you can have a 100% 

mortgage offset account 

against a fixed rate home 

loan. What the… ??! 

Particularly with investment 

loans, we at 

iChoice also like the ‘big 

four’ and their direct 

subsidiaries, who get 

funded by them. 

You can get two-year 

fixed rate for investment 

loans at 3.99% 

if you know where to 

look. That’s outstanding 

value – especially 

because they’ll also pay 

you $1,500 Refinance 

Rebate. 

Far out, nobody needs 

to have a rate starting 

with a 4! 

Westpac’s even giving 

away enough reward 

points to fly four people 

return to Los Angeles, 

just for switching 

your loan to them, with 

the only catch that the 

loan needs to be more 

than $1m to claim the 

500,000 Velocity points. 

If you insist on a variable 

rate like 3.59% for 

your investment loan 

and you’re securing it 

with your home, it’s wise 

to go with a bank that’s 

just increased its rate, 

rather than one yet to 

announce a rate hike. 

And you’ll probably pull 

off the rate they’d offered 

the previous month, as 

influential brokers like 

the iChoice crew, can 

convince to shave more 

off some more to keep 

you long term. 

I know you love your 

bank, but the reality is 

they’re lawfully required 

to maximise their shareholder 

return. 

That’s their corporate 

responsibility. So anyone 

who thinks the banks 

actually put people first - 

just doesn’t get it. 

All the best deals out 

there are for new-tobank 

clients. So if you’re 

complacent with your 

existing arrangements 

and couldn’t be bothered 

looking around, 

that’s OK. But understand 

you’ve then made 

a decision to cause 

yourself financial loss. 

Remember, you can 

switch banks for your 

loans and still keep 

your everyday accounts 

where they are. 

In my book, staying 

stationary is falling behind 

and not making a 

decision to do something 

is in fact a decisive 

decision to not do it.

that infamous quote 

from Einstein: “the definition 

of insanity is trying 

the same thing over and 

over and expecting a different 

result”. 

It’s for our clients, staff 

and myself to see every 

day. Sure, it’s overused 

and clich, and it’s uncertain 

Einstein even said 

it, but it’s a great antidote 

for the bubbles of 

fear standing between 

us and trying new stuff. 

Often the best course 

isn’t the most comfortable 

one. 

Getting a better rate is 

just one of the reasons 

you’d consider refinancing 

- and the hassle or 

discomfort - it’s all in 

your imagination. 

Ultimately, it’s the 

structure and the allround 

advice that will really 

get you ahead. 

We don’t miss a trick 

at iChoice and won’t 

charge you a cent. The 

banks pay us to do their 

work for them, we’ll land 

you a rate you probably 

didn’t think was possible 

and then, a few of the 

banks will offer an enticement 

for accepting 

a better deal - in cash or 

Velocity Points. 

Or just stay where you 

are, pay more and get no 

free professional advice.

Epping Bridge to be widened 

The Epping Station Bridge is to be widened. 

The bridge widening was jointly 

announced yesterday (Tuesday) by 

Epping MP Damien Tudehope and 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts 

who said the project will cost $50 

million. 

“We’ve heard loud and clear the 

community see the road as a pinch 

point,” Mr Roberts said. 

“Widening the Epping Station 

Bridge is also another critical piece 

of the infrastructure puzzle in Sydney’s 

growing northwest and Epping 

Railway Station will be further 

improved when the $8.3 billion 

Sydney Metro Northwest is completed 

next year.” 

The bridge widening project will 

provide an additional westbound 

lane, a central median strip and 

wider footpaths over the rail line 

near Epping Railway Station. 

Mr Tudehope said the widening of 

Epping Bridge was one one of his 

election promises and he is thrilled 

by the announcement. 

“I am also grateful to all the residents 

who have written to my office 

and signed petitions, supporting 

me in campaigning for this outcome,” 

he said. 

Roads Minister Melinda Pavey 

said the $50 million dollar project 

will be undertaken by Roads and 

Maritime Serices and the Department 

of Planning and Environment 

provide the funding.

Eastwood police attacked by 

knife wielding man at station 

AN EASTWOOD Police officer narrowly escaped being slashed 

by a knife in an unprovoked attack at Eastwood Police Station 

last Thursday. 

Leading Senior Constable 

Scott Collis was 

walking towards the 

station around 3am 

when knife wielding 

Sean Matthews (28) 

allegedly approached 

him from the shadows. 

The Leading Senior 

Constable confronted 

Matthews who is further 

alleged to have repeatedly 

lunged at him 

with a 20cm knife. 

After a short pursuit 

Matthews - still carrying 

the knife - stopped 

and turned to confront 

police before being 

tasered and arrested. 

He was later restrained 

by police 

at a hearing in 

Burwood Court. 

Lucky Escape 

“The officers are very 

lucky to not have been 

seriously injured or actually 

killed,” a NSW 

police spokesman 

said. 

“The offender has 

lunged on multiple occasions 

with a large 

carving knife towards 

the police officer 

“Thankfully, the actions 

of the officer 

were sufficient to repel 

the attack and the offender 

fled down the 

street.” 

Police will attempt to 

establish a motive for 

the unprovoked attack. 

“This is one of these 

random, unprovoked 

incidents that unfortunately 

appears on the 

international stage far 

too often,” the spokesman 

said. 

“We’re taking a lead 

from our colleagues 

overseas and starting 

to look at the motivation 

which is a driving 

force for our investigation.”

and four other people 

were rushed to hospital 

after a fire swept 

through a home on 

Stanley Street in Putney 

last Saturday. 

The fire broke out 

around 3.50am and 

the 50 year old sole 

occupant of the home 

was rushed to Concord 

Hospital where 

he died. 

A firefighter was

The driver is reported 

to have assisted the 

injured victim who 

remains in a serious 

condition with internal

A SUSPECTED 

BURGLAR is alleged 

to have been caught 

by police while hiding 

in bushes in Carlingford 

on Wednesday. 

The 23 year old 

Westmead man is alleged 

to have broken 

into several homes and 

a car across Carlingford 

and Epping and 

stole electronic items, 

wallets and a handbag. 

He was caught

AN ALLEGEDLY 

STOLEN Apple I-Pad 

was found on a 25 year 

old women arrested 

and charged in Ryde 

on Sunday. 

Police found the 

stolen item around 

11.20am when they 

were called to the intersection

Road and Stephen 

Street Ryde in response 

to reports of 

a male and female involved 

in a physical 

altercation. 

Police allege the couple 

were under the influence 

of drugs and a 

search of the woman’s 

bag is reported to have 

found syringes and a 

headlamp. 

Police have confirmed 

the I Pad had 

been stolen during 

a break and enter in 

December and the 

women did not have a 

prescription for medication 

in her possession. 

She was charged 

with Goods in Custody 

and two counts 

of Possession in relation 

to a prescribed 

restricted substance. 

She was refused bail.

for North Ryde bowls trio 

NORTH Ryde RSL lady lawn bowlers have done their club proud after 

tasting succcss at the recent Region 16 play offs. 

Stalwarts Pat Saunders, Slavica Beram and Ivy Hitchens produced superb efforts at 

elite representative level. 

Pat and Slavica (pictured below with their gold medals) won the Open Pairs Region 16 

play offs with a 19-16 victory over a tough team from The Hills and advance to the State 

Play offs at Taren Point on September 5-6. 

Two days later the talented Ivy Hitchens (below right) produced an outstanding game 

against C Cadman from The Hills to win 25/21 in the Region Singles Play offs. She will 

now compete in the State Play offs atTaren Point on September 3-4. The accomplished 

North Ryde trio received their gold medals from Mitchell District President Toni Pollock 

and Macquarie District Secretary Fay Laney.

of the first quarter the 

Hawks were down by a 

goal. 

At the break the Hawks 

made one change 

bringing on NSW Swifts 

training partner Alison 

Miller into the goal 

shooter position. Alison’s 

combination with 

Austin was impressive 

to watch, their movement 

around the goal 

circle allowed them to 

evade the feisty Central 

Coast defenders continuously. 

There was excellent 

precision passing into 

the goal shooters from 

Ebony Burnard and 

Georgia Marshall, allowing 

the shooters to 

be in the perfect position 

to score the goals. 

The third quarter saw 

the Hawks go from 

strength to strength 

with the defenders 

Jessica Grant – who is 

having the best season 

she can remember – 

turnover so much ball 

that the Hawks won 

the quarter by ten goals 

taking a 48-35 lead. 

The spectators where 

applauding the skills 

and athleticism from 

both teams, which was 

enthralling to watch. A 

great competitive game 

with the Hawks coming 

away with the win putting 

to grab a share of 

top spot with Central 

Coast.

Burwood United to a 

swag of junior premierships 

before bursting 

into the Balmain first 

grade team as a 17 year 

old centre prodigy in 

1989. 

The Burwood cub featured 

in the Tigers’ epic 

Grand Final against 

Canberra and went on 

to play 185 matches 

for the Tigers before 

stints with South Sydney 

(40 matches) and 

North Queensland (16 

games). 

Brasher made 21 

Origin appearances for 

NSW and 16 Tests for 

Australia including the 

Kangaroos’ World Cupwinning 

1992 and 1995 

outfits and 1994 tour of 

England and France. 

During his illustrious 

career, Brasher scored 

112 tries and booted 

116 goals for a tally of 

680 points.

LEGENDARY North Ryde RSL cricketer Eddie Kennedy received the surprise of his life when he 

recently attended the Club’s annual Presentation Night. 

A proud Eddie, North 

Ryde’s original club 

captain, was chuffed 

when honoured twice 

by officials for his outstanding 

contributions 

to his beloved Cricket 

Club both on and off the 

field. 

The fast bowling great 

presented a new perpetual 

trophy - the Eddie 

Kennedy Bowling Award 

named in his honour - to 

Dan Buttrey on the night 

but the best was yet to 

come. 

Life member Eddie was 

shocked soon after when 

he received two plaques 

- one to take home - revealing 

that the southern 

end of the North Ryde 

RSL Oval cricket pitch will 

be hereby known as The 

Boys doubles event. 

Hijikata and Tajima 

were beaten 6-3 

7-6(4) by sixth seeds 

Nicolas Mejia and Ondrej 

Styler but showed 

they have the talent 

and court skills to go 

a long way. 

Earlier they posted a
