Vanessa Kirby (The Crown,
in the cast of this brand-new
production, directed by Carrie
from the National Theatre
to cinemas. Wild and newly
single, Julie throws a late-night
party. In the kitchen, Jean
and Kristina clean up as the
celebration heaves above
them. Crossing the threshold,
Julie initiates a power game
with Jean – which rapidly
descends into a savage fight
for survival. This new version
of August Strindberg’s play
Miss Julie, written by Polly
and fiercely relevant in its
new setting of contemporary
Sunny has been playing the
“outrageous and raunchy
Lilian Bellamy” in Radio 4’s The
Archers for the past 17 years
and has become one of the
listeners’ favourite characters!
Her antics have kept the nation
gripped and entertained,
whether it be riding round
Ambridge on a Harley
Davidson, drinking the Bull
and Cider shed dry with Eddie
Grundy, absconding to Costa
Rica with her beloved and
very recently departed Tiger
(Oh, the louse!) or recklessly
kicking off her sling-backs and
leaping into bed with Tiger’s
brother Paul – not to mention
the knitting, the collagen,
Calendar Girls and furlong
frolics (and almost wedding)
with Justin Elliot!
Sunny will fill you in on all the
behind the scenes stories
about the world’s longest
running soap opera – an
evening of anecdotes, banter,
and favourite pieces from
Sunny’s long and distinguished
Exhibition On Screen
presents one of the most
talked about exhibitions of
2017/18. Dedicated to the
portrait work of Paul Cézanne,
the exhibition opened in Paris
before travelling to London
and Washington.
One can’t appreciate
20th century art without
understanding the
significance and genius of Paul
Cézanne. Featuring interviews
with the curators and experts
and correspondence from
the artist himself, the film
takes audiences beyond
the exhibition to the places
Cézanne lived and worked and
sheds light on an artist who is
perhaps the least known of all
the impressionists – until now.
ACOUSTIC
The Blues came calling first,
but rock was always waiting
around the corner. Well it
would be, wouldn’t it? Coming
from the deep south, it was
inevitable, but living in the
deep south of Bradford, there’s
a gritty hard edge to life! A
female guitar prodigy, Chantel
was told by a major label that
she had a “great voice, but
girls don’t play guitar like
that!” Wisely ignoring their
comments, she enrolled at the
Leeds College of Music and
became the first student in the
college’s history, to achieve a
100% pass mark at BTEC, with
18 distinctions.
After years of touring and
festival appearances, Chantel
returns with a vengeance
with ten new songs that not
only salutes contemporary
rock, but shows her gradual
transition from conventional
blues to a harder, bigger and
bolder rock sound.
Come and support a talented
local artists, for a night of
acoustic blues music from one
of the UK’s rising stars.
whom she’s making her very
makes it sound like Zoe Lyons
has some sort of idea what
she’s doing in life. But does
she? Or is she the perfect
example of an Entry Level
Decide for yourself, as this
hugely popular comic returns
with a fresh crop of “quick-fire
observational gags, delivered
with utter conviction” (Chortle),
not to mention “proper laughout-loud
That one’s from the Guardian.
fifty theatrical performances.
In a career spanning more
than thirty-five years he has
appeared on television, on
the West-End stage and he
has worked with some of the
country’s leading playwrights
including: Sir Alan Ayckbourn,
Dame Kay Mellor, Richard
After the success of last year’s
best loved novels Oliver Twist.
Desperate for some fun, Oskar
leaves the snowbound little
house on top of the mountain
to try and find a friendly animal
to play with. But where are all
the animals? And why does
Oskar have to wait till spring
to play his favourite game
again? This original play for
young children uses a rich
mix of storytelling, physical
theatre, clowning, puppetry,
music & song to tell the tale of
a puppy’s search for friendship
in the wilderness of the Alps.
RECY TAYLOR
2017, US, 91 mins, 15
Otley Film Society are marking
Black History Month with a
screening of this powerful
documentary. Recy Taylor, a
24-year-old black mother and
sharecropper, was raped by
six white boys in Alabama in
1944. Recy bravely identified
her rapists, and the NAACP
(Nat Association for the
Advancement of Coloured
People) sent in its chief rape
investigator, Rosa Parks, who
rallied support and triggered
an unprecedented outcry for
justice. This film exposes a
legacy of physical abuse of
black women and reveals Rosa
Parks’ intimate role in Recy
Taylor’s momentous story.
To be followed by a discussion
THIS MIGHT
HURT
Written by John Godber
When tough actor Jack
Skipton returns from filming
to care for his ageing aunt,
he has no idea what he is
letting himself in for. But this
might be his most taxing
role to date, as he begins an
incredible odyssey through
the NHS, from cancelled
GP appointments, wrongly
booked scans, frustrated
consultants, and abusive
home carers who smoke on
the door step!
Jack’s story is hilarious and
heart-breaking, as he and
his aunt take on the health
service in order to get the right
diagnosis, and the right care;
as he goes from actor to carer
to drugs consultant, and she
refuses to admit that she is
even ill!
Bold physical theatre with
breath-taking grit and honesty,
Godber’s take on our health
service is both tender and true,
as he investigates what we
deserve, and what we receive.
Take a deep breath, because
Orphaned, penniless but
ambitious and with a mind
crammed with imagination
Phineas Taylor Barnum is
remembered as the man who
effortlessly blurred the line
between reality and fiction.
Barnum’s collection of oddities
everything on the opera singer
Jenny Lind to appeal to a highbrow
IT’S DIFFERENT
FOR GIRLS
Hull. 1965. Five young women
decide to start a girl band.
Within months they are touring
the local pubs and clubs and
are soon asked to play for
the US Troops in Germany.
Leaving behind their jobs as
cleaners, dental assistants
and waitresses, the teenagers
embark on their journey to
‘freedom’. However, it’s soon
clear the troops are more
interested in the length of their
skirts than their talent. If these
girls want success they will
have to bite their tongues and
learn to live with it- ‘it’s a man’s
world’.
It’s Different for Girls is a
brand-new musical inspired
by Hull’s own 1960s girl band,
Mandy & The Girlfriends, that
documents the journey of
five young women as they
challenge the music industry
and prove that they are not just
‘good for girls’.
JEREMY HARDY
Jeremy Hardy is in his 4th
decade as a stand-up. That’s
a more dramatic way of saying
he started 34 years ago and,
without a lottery win, probably
has at least another 34 years
to go. In 2014, the tenth series
of Jeremy Hardy Speaks to
the Nation was broadcast on
Radio 4 and more recently
his brand-new series Jeremy
Hardy Feels It. He is also well
known for his appearances
on The News Quiz and I’m
Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Indeed,
Alan Bennett recently said he
likes him “but he’s only on the
radio”. However, Jeremy isn’t
only on the radio, his television
credits include: Jack Dee’s
Election Helpdesk (BBC2), QI
(BBC1), Mock the Week (BBC2),
Grumpy Old Men (BBC1), Back
in The Day (BBC2), Not Tonight
with John Sergeant (BBC2).
He is also on the road all year
round and has never stopped
doing live shows since 1984.
So, it seems fitting that Jeremy
should visit us in Otley for
ANIMALS AND
FRIENDS
In 1964 a wave of new
energetic rock and roll swept
over the youth of the world. On
the crest of this wave was The
Beatles, The Rolling Stones
and of course The Animals.
From the banks of the River
Tyne came the North East’s
offering: a brand of rhythm
n blues that the whole world
seemed to grasp greedily.
The Animals were the second
British band to top the
American charts after The
Beatles with the now multimillion
selling and legendary
anthem, House of the Rising
Sun. The band subsequently
achieved over twenty global
top ten hit records.
Though the band has changed,
the songs remain eternal.
Alongside covers of Ray
Charles and John Lee Hooker
classics, they ensure that the
nostalgic element comes with
an enjoyably abrasive edge!
Featuring from the original
Animals – John Steel & Mick
Performed at the Teatro
Alla Scala in Milan, this is
a recorded screening of
the ballet featuring classic
choreography to the immortal
notes of Sergej Prokofiev.
Conducted by Patrick
Fournillier. Romeo and Juliet
debuted in January 1938
in Soviet Russia and it took
three years for Prokofiev to
get his adaptation of William
Shakespeare’s ill-fated lovers
to the stage.
The production was
later adapted by leading
choreographer Sir Kenneth
MacMillan, who pays great
attention to human relations,
lyricism and psychological
tension, without neglecting
moments of humour through
emotion. The title roles in
this production are played by
Italian star Roberto Bolle and
world-renowned American
Inspired by the work of Master
Fell walker and artist Alfred
Wainwright, Andy Beck has just
completed the major project
of producing a watercolour
sketch of every illustration
drawn by Wainwright in his
seven Pictorial Guides to the
Lakeland Fells. Every single
location of the illustrations has
been meticulously researched
so that Andy’s references are
taken from the exact location
where Wainwright took his own
black and white photographs.
This project took over ten
years to complete. and has
featured in the media both
carved out a lasting role for
herself amid the changes of the
NATIONAL
THEATRE
LIVE: I’M NOT
RUNNING
by David Hare
Recorded Screening
I’m Not Running is an explosive
new play by David Hare,
premiering at the National
Theatre. Pauline Gibson has
spent her life as a doctor,
the inspiring leader of a local
health campaign. When she
crosses paths with her old
boyfriend, a stalwart loyalist
in Labour Party politics, she’s
faced with an agonising
decision. What’s involved in
sacrificing your private life
and your piece of mind for
something more than a single
issue? Does she dare? Hare
was recently described by
The Washington Post as ‘the
premiere political dramatist
writing in English’. His other
work includes Pravda and
Skylight, broadcast by National
Theatre Live in 2014.
THE
SISTERHOOD
Celebrating female
musicians and the stories
behind their songs
The Sisterhood is four
accomplished Leeds musicians:
Fuzzy Jones, Fran Wyburn,
Astraluna and Miranda Arieh
– each of whom have been
featured on BBC Introducing
and have a wealth of composing,
performing and recording
experience between them.
At the heart of The Sisterhood
is the belief that collaborating
and not competing with fellow
musicians makes us stronger,
not only musically but also
emotionally. Female musicians
are still underrepresented in
the wider music industry. The
Sisterhood aims to address
some of the issues faced by
women in music, especially
those who are not only writing,
recording and performing their
own material but also managing
themselves and their careers,
and ultimately encourage other
women to write, perform and
collaborate too.
Come along and support
these local musicians and their
mission in what should be a
great evening of live music
from talented local artists.
BREABACH
Continuing in a long line of
great Scottish folk bands,
Breabach began 2017 in
exciting fashion as receivers of
the Scots Trad Music Awards
‘Folk Band of the Year’ for
the second time and ‘Album
of the Year’ for their fifth
studio album ‘Astar’. A special
Celtic Connections show to
celebrate the album was held
in February in Glasgow’s City
Halls and was received with
a sell-out crowd and 5-star
review in the Scotsman.
The momentum continued
with nominations for ‘Best
Band’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk
Awards and for ‘European
Album of the Year’ in the Song
Lines Music Awards.
2018 will see Breabach back
in the studio to record a sixth
studio album as well continuing
their adventures across the
globe with tours of the UK
and Australia. Delivering an
increasingly mature repertoire
and live performance whilst
continuing to build their
reputation at the forefront of
the UK’s world and roots music
scene, this is a band at the very
top of their game and one not
to be missed.
A young woman in a small
Mid-Western town goes to a
travelling carnival one evening,
where she is urged by a silent
clown to visit the carnival’s
circus and see The Aerialist,
the show’s star attraction. She
is entranced by The Aerialist,
but during his act he misses a
catch and falls to the ground.
She rushes to help him, but
then the ground beneath
them gives way and they fall
through into the dreamlike
world of Cirque du Soleil.
Separated, they travel through
the different tent worlds trying
to find each other, interacting
with the strange and wonderful
performers and performances
of Cirque du Soleil.
Theatre are back with their
latest show Birds Nest Billy.
I wish for an adventure! Billy is
a little boy with a big brother
called Bo. Billy and Bo both
have big hair. Big, curly bird
nest hair. They play together:
building, racing, dancing
pretending. They’re the very
best of brothers.
Then one day Bo gets a haircut
and starts going to school.
Billy plays on his own, but it
isn’t the same. Billy misses his
big brother all day long. But
then out of Billy’s bird nest hair
chirps a little bird. The little
bird grants Billy three magical
