It gives me great pleasure to introduce this special Jubilee edition of the 

Amersham Town Guide for 2012-13. From our historic Old Town to the 

modern town centre on the Hill, Amersham will be joining in the national 

Jubilee celebrations, the Olympic and the Paralympic Games plus local 

regular Civic events and activities. 

Amersham is a great place to live and work. London is just a train or 

tube ride away, yet we can enjoy our local Chiltern countryside, an area of 

outstanding natural beauty, right on our doorstep. 

I hope you enjoy all the festivities and events for this year and next 

and get the most from this new Guide.

Introduction 

Situated in the ‘Gateway to the Chilterns’ and with 

a population of approximately 14,000, Amersham 

today represents a fascinating blend of the ancient and 

the modern. 

Within its rural boundaries there are fine examples 

of some of England’s most appealing architecture 

dating back to the 15th century and earlier. Elsewhere, 

community facilities meet the needs of a broad crosssection 

of activities and interests. 

Amersham consists of two centres of population, 

namely Amersham Old Town and Amersham-on-the- 

Hill. While both centres have their own character, 

collectively and through their history and structure, 

they provide a pleasing and contrasting environment 

as a whole. 

The following narratives are based on contributions 

by three former local historians: John Camp, Bernard 

Simpson and Jean Archer.

The Background 

to Amersham 

The old coach road from London to Aylesbury and the 

Midlands comes down Chequers Hill from the direction 

of the Chalfonts, runs along the Broadway and through 

Amersham Market Square in front of the Market Hall 

and along the High Street. History is all around us, not 

only in the bricks and mortar of the buildings but in the 

names that survive from ages past. 

The appearance of Amersham Old Town today 

appears largely 17th and 18th century though, as 

Elmodesham, the town was mentioned in the 

Domesday Survey and there was a Roman villa complex 

to the West of the town, which was excavated prior to 

completion of the bypass in 1987. There is even 

evidence of earlier people here from the Bronze Age axe 

found in the River Misbourne. 

The most striking feature of the Market Square is 

the fine red brick Market Hall standing on its rounded 

arches and surmounted by a wooden turret and 

clock-tower. It was a gift of the local Drake family in 

1682. A charter for a market and annual fair was 

granted in 1200, in the reign of King John. The main 

weekly market used to be held on the flagstones under 

the hall and in the surrounding street. Amersham Fair

continues, as it has done for nearly 800 years, stretching 

the whole length of the town on the 19th and 20th 

September, the patronal feast-days of the parish church. 

A tablet on the north side of the Market Hall, erected by 

the Amersham Society, gives a brief outline of the 

town’s history. Nearby is an old lead pump dated 1749 

and under the arches is the original town lock-up. 

The interior of the Market Hall has been 

refurbished and upgraded in keeping with its status as 

an attractive and ancient monument, whilst at the same 

time providing the community and visitors with an 

excellent location for meetings, exhibitions and 

numerous other social and business functions. 

As a staging post on the coach road, Amersham has 

always had a plentiful supply of inns. The three-storey 

Griffin Inn, now ASK, stands opposite the Memorial 

Gardens, which are such an imaginative feature of the 

town, and facing the picturesque row of shops made out 

of the medieval buildings of a former malthouse. 

On the north side of Market Square over an arch 

between two shops is the date 1624 marking the original 

location of Robert Challoner’s Grammar School, long 

since removed to the new part of the town. 

Immediately to the right of the Market Hall is 

Church Street, a narrow road that widens out to 

become Rectory Hill as it climbs upwards past 

Parsonage Wood and the handsome Rectory built by the 

Rev. Benjamin Robertshaw in 1735.

Town Council 

Amersham Town Council was established in 1974 as the 

successor to Amersham Parish Council (established 

1895) in the local government reorganisation of 1974. 

The Town Council has 15 members elected for a 

term of four years in 2011. The members represent the 

following wards: 

Amersham Common 3 members 

Amersham-on-the-Hill 5 members 

Amersham Town 5 members 

Weedon Hill 2 members 

The Town Mayor, as Chairman of the Council, is elected 

annually by councillors in May of each year. Members 

of Council do not receive any allowances or expenses 

for their duties, and give their time freely for the service 

of the community. In the case of any difficulties 

members can be contacted via the Council offices. 

Town Council administration and management is 

provided by the Town Clerk, Mrs Janet Wheeler CILCA 

MILCM and staff from the Council offices in King George 

V House, King George V Road, Amersham. Council 

operates a three committee system: 

Planning & Footpaths (meeting every third week) 

Community Services (meets six times per annum) 

Finance & General Purposes (meets six times per annum) 

Other working groups and sub-committees meet as 

necessary and the full Council structure can be seen on 

the website www.amersham-tc.gov.uk. Members of the 

public are encouraged to attend and indeed may ask 

questions or make statements on any matter of Town 

Council policy or responsibilities during the 15 minute 

Public Question Time at every meeting of full Council 

(six times per annum). 

The Council is responsible for maintaining the 

Memorial Gardens and a number of other open spaces 

and gardens in Amersham.

The Council provides a range of sports facilities and 

pavilions of a high standard at: 

Hervines Park – cricket, football and rugby, public bowling 

green maintained and operated by Amersham Bowls Club 

Barn Meadow – cricket and football 

Children’s play areas are provided at Hervines Park, 

Barn Meadow and King George V Playing Field where 

there is also a small skatepark 

The Town Council is also responsible for: 

Three cemeteries in the Town (The Platt, Stanley Hill and 

St Mary’s, along with the closed churchyard at St Mary’s). 

Green burial site at Stanley Hill being developed for 2011 

Allotments at Woodside Rd, The Pyghtle and White Lion Rd 

Market Hall (built in 1682) under which small markets 

may be held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 

though currently only Saturday is operating 

Streetlighting in the residential areas of Amersham 

The town’s heritage is considered to be of significant 

importance and the Council has recently completed 

a number of repairs and renovations to its historical 

properties and will continue this programme in 

future years. 

The Council funds its public responsibilities through 

revenue income from hire fees of its facilities and council 

tax from each household in the town. Under current 

government legislation the Town Council does not 

receive any income from the town’s businesses, business 

rates or central government grants or assistance.

High Street 

Wide, curving slightly and graced with an astonishing 

variety of architectural styles, Amersham High Street is 

one of the most visually satisfying in the country. Near 

the Market Hall, which partially blocks it at its eastern 

end, is The Gables, an unusual house of about 1640 with 

a Dutch façade and almost opposite The Gables, set back 

from the road, is Apsley House, a handsome residence 

with a façade added in the time of William and Mary. 

On the same side the King’s Arms, with its false 20th 

century timber frontage, gives some indication of what 

the High Street may have looked like in the 16th century, 

when John Leyland visited the town and described the 

High Street as “well built with timber”. In later years, 

many of the half-timbered frontages were covered with 

brick façades that hid their earlier origins. 

On the northern side, set back from the High Street 

is Amersham Museum, which is well worth a visit if one 

wishes to obtain a good feeling for the long history of 

the town and its inhabitants. 

Up an alley from the King’s Arms is the Baptist 

Chapel of 1783, with its fascinating lantern on top and a 

British School of 1852 added to it at the rear. Further 

along is another Drake gift to the town, the gabled

almshouses of 1657, built on three sides of a little 

courtyard and separated from the outside world by a 

wall and tall wrought-iron gate. On the other side of the 

road is a curiosity in the Wee House – a 17th century 

building with its original frontage and said to be one of 

the tiniest houses in England. 

The High Street ends with the massive wall of Little 

Shardeloes on the left, and on the right, the handsome 

Town Mill, now a private house. On the side of the High 

Street is the attractive row of cottages called Turpin’s 

Row, not because of any association with the 

highwayman, but unromantically taking their name 

from that of the builder.

At Town Mill a bridge over the Misbourne leads to 

Mill Lane, but a path turns immediately right and 

follows the Misbourne along the backs of the houses in 

the High Street. The path cuts across the beautifully 

sited Barn Meadow with the old brewery maltings in the 

corner, and reaches Church Street again at the bottom 

of Rectory Hill. 

A rather longer exploration can be made from the 

western end of the High Street by turning left up 

Cherry Lane just past the bow-fronted Swan Inn. 

Further up the lane a footpath crosses it at a stile and 

gate, and continues left passing the gardens on the 

south side of the High Street on rising ground, giving 

wonderful views across the red rooftops of the town to 

the Old Rectory on its hillside site and the adjoining 

woods. The path eventually widens into The Platt, 

passing a converted Baptist Chapel and Chimney 

Cottage, and emerges into Whielden Street, which is the 

main road from Amersham to High Wycombe. 

Some distance along Whielden Street to the right is 

the Victorian façade of the original workhouse 

buildings (pictured), built by George Gilbert Scott in 

1838 and with the date inscribed in brick on the front. 

Later converted into the town’s hospital, the old 

workhouse has now become private housing. 

Nearby is the charming and unpretentious Friends 

Meeting House of 1685. Turning left in to Whielden 

Street from The Platt, the road comes back to the 

Market Square. 

The A413 bypass, completed in 1987, relieves the 

High Street and Broadway of dense traffic, making 

Old Amersham a very pleasant town in which to 

stroll around.

Amersham Markets 

Amersham has two ancient markets; the Charter Market, 

dating from King John’s reign, now takes place every Tuesday 

in Sycamore Road. The other market is held under the 

Market Hall in Old Amersham (built in 1682) under which 

small markets may be held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 

though currently only Saturday is operating. There is a 

Country Market at Amersham Free Church Hall, Woodside 

Road, every Friday early morning. An Italian Market comes 

to Old Amersham in March, July and September.

By local historian, the late Jean Archer, 

(Mayor of Amersham 1984-1987) 

It was not often that a family living in Old Amersham in 

the days prior to the last war travelled far from the old 

town. Even a trip ‘up on the Common’ to a small child 

was considered quite an outing. So it was to me, and I 

was filled with pleasure when my mother began to bustle 

about her household tasks with added impetus saying 

“We shall be going up on the Common this afternoon.” 

‘The Common’ that she and her contemporaries 

referred to at the time was not some gorse covered 

expanse, but usually the site of the few popular shops that 

had sprung up around the Amersham Railway Station 

since its construction in 1892. The Station Hotel, 

(re-named the Iron Horse and now the site of new flats) 

and the Temperance Hotel (Amersham House, formerly 

the offices of the Amersham Town Council) were among 

the earliest buildings.

Hill Avenue housed Profits, the photographers; 

Bennett’s shoe shop; Popes, the seed merchants; Savages 

fish shop; a jewellers; Geary’s musical instruments, a 

grocers and a butchers. Here it was also that the dentist, 

Mr Wege, pulled teeth, hitherto pulled by Mr Haddon in 

the old town and by the end of the decade the glorious 

Co-op had arrived. At the top blossomed Oakfield 

Corner (pictured right), so named after the large oak tree 

that stood there in the last century. The establishments 

here dealt with the more serious business aspects of trade 

displaying the large sign of the Bucks Insurance Bureau, 

the Bucks School of Driving and on this corner also, Mr 

Tom Collins the accountant, had his office. The Bucks 

Library was selling and lending books and the erudite 

atmosphere is still prevalent. 

Sycamore Road was fast becoming the last word in 

ultra modernity with the comparatively new Regent 

Cinema (below) opening its spacious interior to glistening 

realms hitherto unknown. The earlier films of Rudolph 

Valentino had been shown at the Playbox, in Station 

Road, later the famous Playhouse Repertory Theatre. 

Down in the valley, the actual town of Amersham, 

although unable to boast such new innovations as a 

cinema or theatre, was still quite a large shopping

metropolis with 56 trading establishments in the length 

of its main thoroughfare alone. It was not until much 

later that part of Amersham Common acquired the 

rather grand name ‘Amersham-on-the-Hill’, perhaps 

because it was thought the very word ‘common’ was 

common in another sense. 

In the last century Amersham Common referred 

widely to anywhere upon the hill and stretched away 

down Woodside and White Lion Road to the Drovers’ 

Pond adjacent to the White Lion Public House. An 

Enclosure Act of 1815 dealt with the enclose of the old 

common ‘And whereas the said open and common fields, 

common meadows, wastes and other commonable lands 

are in their present state incapable of any considerable 

improvements...’ At the same time public highways and 

public and private footpaths were established beyond 

dispute. Enclosure was not a popular move, as hitherto 

the commons were an integral part of the rural economy, 

for whilst villagers worked the arable fields in strips, they 

supplemented their livelihood by grazing cattle on the 

common pasture, which consisted of meadows, 

woodland and wasteland. Cattle were not allowed to 

graze on the common meadows from Candlemas to 

Lammas when the meadows were cropped. In the woods, 

the acorns and the beechnuts fattened the pigs for winter 

killing. Therefore the common was of the utmost 

importance and seemed to prove a successful experiment 

in communal life.

But the Enclosures Act, that enclosed the large fields 

or commons into smaller fields each with an individual 

owner, caused considerable disturbance and changed the 

face of countryside – and they were not the only change 

and upheaval the people of Amersham faced in the last 

century. The railway was on its way; that great monster 

that rampaged across the country, polluting the very air, 

and, it was thought, even causing pregnant cows to abort 

in sheer terror. 

George Stephenson had planned the ‘London to 

Birmingham’ through Hillingdon, Uxbridge, the 

Chalfonts and the Misbourne Valley as early as 1835 but 

the many landowners along the route, including Squire 

Drake at Shardeloes, had objected so strongly to the 

railway crossing their land that the planners were forced 

to come up with another route – the one to the north of 

Watford that exists today. And who could blame Squire 

Drake with glorious Shardeloes parkland sweeping down 

the Misbourne and landscaped by none other than the 

18th century landscape gardener Sir Humphrey Repton. 

Ebenezer West from his school ‘for the sons of 

gentlemen’ at Elmodesham House in the High Street 

conversely went as far as to raise a petition in favour of 

the railway. It suited him nicely, as the railway would 

provide the parents of his boys with easy access from 

London. Great controversy and argument reigned but it 

was felt generally by the inhabitants that the advent of the 

‘line’ would bring utter ruination to Amersham, a town

of great former repute and renown. So Amersham was 

without a railway until later in the century when the 

Metropolitan Line came creeping down from London in 

faltering stages. The line came through in 1892, across the 

common and up on the hill, thus placating the Squire, 

and the station was built in 1894. 

On the common at that time were quite a few houses 

and farms of former repute, one of the oldest and most 

historical being Raans (now Raans Farm). Possibly 

rebuilt about 1540, it was extended in the 17th century by 

the Proby family, whose arms are to be seen above the 

entrance doorway. A most important local manor, it was 

granted to the de Mandevilles and tenanted by Jordan de 

Rane. This family acquired the Lordship, which later 

passed by marriage to the Groves. In the 15th century it 

became the seat of the distinguished Brudenell family 

who held it until 1760. One Edmund Brudenell was Clerk 

to the parliament in the reign of Edward III, Attorney to 

Richard II and Coroner of England. He died in 1425. 

Another Edmund Brudenell, Knight of the Shire of 

Bucks, had a son, Dru, who served in the office of the 

High Sheriff of Bucks, and Robert Brudenell was 

appointed Kings Sergeant in 1505, then raised to the 

judicial seat in the Kings Bench and in 1521 was 

appointed Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. After the 

occupation of the Proby family, the house was eventually 

purchased by the Duke of Bedford in the 18th century 

and later sold to Lord George Cavendish passing to Lord 

Chesham. 

Woodside Farm, thought by some to be the site of 

the old House of the Manor of Woodside, was during the 

17th century the home of Mary Pennington, wife of the 

fearless Quaker Isaac Pennington, and mother-in-law to 

William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. She and Isaac 

had previously lived at Bury Farm at the foot of Gore 

Hill, the road to Coleshill, and it was there that Penn 

courted her daughter Gulielma. But during one of Isaac’s 

many sojourns in Aylesbury Gaol, Mary was forced to 

leave those premises and purchased Woodside, which was 

in a very dilapidated condition. Mary spent a great deal 

of money on it and it is now the site of the thriving 

Amersham Community Centre in Chiltern Avenue. 

The Weller family were prosperous brewers in 

Amersham during the 18th and 19th centuries, ending 

up with 142 licensed properties (pubs) within a radius of

The old brewery buildings, now Badminton Court 

35 miles of Amersham and employing over half the 

population of the town. The prosperous George Weller 

built a mansion on Amersham Common called The 

Plantation (hence the name Plantation Road). This was 

eventually divided into flats and renamed Park Place and, 

even later, was demolished and modern flats built on the 

site by the local council, which still bear the same name. 

The Weller’s sold the brewery in 1929. 

Amersham was once a Borough, returning two 

members to Parliament until the Parliamentary Reform 

Act of 1832 when it was disenfranchised. Up until that 

time those returned were mostly members of the Drake 

family (Lords of the Manor) although Edmund Waller, 

the Poet, was returned for Amersham more than once in 

the 17th century, and the return of Algernon Sidney in 

1656 caused a great stir, not to mention alarm. He was 

later beheaded for the part he was supposed to have 

played in the Rye House Plot. 

E.K.Fowler, whose grandfather was landlord of the 

Crown, was present at one of the Amersham elections 

and was highly delighted with the fun and frolic. It was 

the custom for the eligible females of the parish to 

assemble at the local hostelries awaiting the return of the 

successful candidates who rushed in and kissed them all. 

This ritual became even more robust when the young 

men of the parish were allowed in afterwards to follow 

the same practice amid great shrieks and protestations. 

The candidates at the last election in 1832 were 

Squire Drake and Colonel Drake (who had fought in ‘the 

Blues’ at Waterloo). Two very large unhewn stones stood 

outside ‘the Market House in the public street where they

were proposed’ and after the usual nomination, in very 

brief speeches, these two gentlemen returned thanks for 

their election. They then entered their carriages, each 

drawn by four horses which perambulated through the 

town followed by a crowd of men, women and children 

cheering, shouting and dancing around. No small 

wonder the loss of former status was lamented and such 

was the sadness felt at the coming of the railway that a 

threnody was published, edged in black and headed: 

“In Memorium – Amersham 

In loving memory of this old town, which 

departed this life virtually in 1832, when 

it lost the distinction of being a borough.” 

With countless verses it went on to bewail 

past glory and then: 

“O Amersham! What voice is this that... 

wakes you up so rudely, 

The line is coming through thy midst 

ere long 

The Metropolitan Extension Railway 

O turn aside, do not this cruel wrong”.

It did turn aside, just as far as the top of the hill, 

running along the crest, and leaving Old Amersham to 

bask and Amersham Common to grow and develop into 

the next century. 

Amersham has received many famous visitors, one 

of the most noted being John Knox (1505-1572), the 

Scottish Reformer, who was sent on a preaching tour of 

Bucks during the nine days that Lady Jane Grey was on 

the throne. Amersham Church was his last stop on that 

tour and on 10th July 1553 he preached in the Church 

against Mary Tudor and in favour of Lady Jane. On 3rd 

August Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen and Knox 

had to leave the country in a hurry. Approximately a 

century later, Richard Baxter (1615-1691) the eminent 

ecclesiastical Divine, whilst being quartered at Amersham 

with Cromwell’s army, also preached at Amersham 

Church and had a dispute with various non-conformists. 

In his autobiography he mentions that the war of words 

went on until well into the night. He felt compelled to revisit 

Amersham in 1673 when he became more than a 

little alarmed at the continued growth of Quakerism in 

the Amersham area and decided it was time for the 

people ‘to hear what was to be said for their recovery’. 

Jean Archer died in May 2004, aged 78.

Over 3000 insulation measures were installed in the 

Chiltern District during the first two years of the 

government's Carbon Emissions Reduction Target. 

Local homeowners will have felt the benefits of these

The Two Centres 

The new part of Amersham, a mile away from the 

original town and up on a hill, is colloquially termed 

‘top’ Amersham. It developed around the station from 

the early part of the century and is reached either by the 

steep Rectory Hill near the church or up Station Road. 

On leaving the Old Town, before ascending the hill via 

Station Road and on the corner of Gore Hill (the road 

to Beaconsfield) is Bury Farm. 

Station Road is pleasant and distinguished at its 

lower end by houses in Highover Park known as 

‘The Sun Houses’ which in the 1930s were an

architectural showpiece. At the top end of the steep lane 

is the original white concrete house called ‘High and 

Over’ – with its striking outlines it was the first house in 

Britain to be built incorporating the ideas of the famous 

French-Swiss architect, Le Corbusier. 

A little higher up Station Road on the left a 

footpath runs up between the gardens of houses to 

emerge on the brow of a hill above Amersham, where 

stands the Martyrs’ Memorial. This commemorates not 

only the burning at the stake of the Amersham Lollard 

martyrs in 1521, including William Tylesworth burned 

in 1511, but also other martyrs of the Chilterns. 

In the new part of Amersham there are good shops 

as well as some fine examples of modern church 

architecture. Near the station a complex of modern 

buildings includes offices of the Town and District 

Councils, the Police Station, Health Centre, Community 

Centre, Library and Leisure Centre. This has been 

extended to provide a separate swimming pool, flumes 

and diving pool together with gymnasium facilities and 

climbing centre. A magnificent children’s playground 

and skatepark has been erected by the Town Council. 

The shops are situated mainly in Sycamore Road, 

Hill Avenue (leading to the station) and Woodside 

Road. This latter road runs straight through to 

Blackhorse Bridge where the road twists under the 

railway to join Stanley Hill as it comes up from 

Chequers Hill. Before the bridge, Raans Road passes 

some light industrial development but after crossing a 

hump-backed bridge over the branch railway line to 

Chesham becomes a lane leading to Raans Farm. From 

the railway bridge White Lion Road runs left towards 

Little Chalfont just over a mile away. The road passes 

the substantial premises of GE Healthcare.

Amersham Old Town is the original town of 

Amersham. The Millstream, Amersham (formerly a 

corn mill) is possibly the site of one of three mills 

mentioned in the Domesday Survey. In 1504 two mills 

were specifically mentioned in the records as the Bury 

and Malt Mills, the former obviously being the 

Millstream at Bury End. From the 1930s onwards it 

was a popular restaurant where people came to wine 

and dine and view the River Misbourne as it ran 

through at the side of the dance floor before wending 

its way through the meadows to the Chalfonts. 

Our group works in Amersham Old Town, which is a 

Conservation Area with its own special character and 

different needs from Amersham-on-the-Hill. Our 

membership includes voluntary and local organisations 

including the school, churches and youth clubs, the old 

town business association, the Town and District 

Councils and the Museum. We are here to make 

improvements for everyone who lives or works in 

Amersham Old Town or who cares about the town. 

As part of the ‘town health check’, residents 

decided that the old town needed a central public open 

space so the area between Gilbeys and the Memorial 

Gardens is being made a focal point for the town. 

Funding has been obtained to make more space by 

reducing the size of the flowerbeds and to install a 

lantern to make it safer at night. A semi-circular 

wrought iron seat has been made to go under the tree.

The gates to the electricity sub-station have been 

replaced and new tourist information boards will be put 

on them. 

We are trying to make changes for both young and 

old. We have set up Old Amersham Seniors in Society to 

arrange meetings and outings for older residents. A project 

has also been started to try to create adventure-type play 

areas on two small areas of land off Gore Hill. The idea 

is to create play spaces using natural materials, keeping 

most of the existing trees and landscape: a place for 

wildlife, children young people and families. We have 

also helped with providing football coaching. 

Other activities include replacing planters for 

flowers, planting bulbs, clearing public areas and 

removing bushes overhanging the Mill Lane path. 

Dog-fouling notices have been put up in Barn Meadow.

Twinning 

Amersham/Bensheim 

The Amersham-Bensheim Society was founded in 1978 

to encourage and develop friendship and understanding 

between Amersham and its twin town Bensheim in 

Germany. 

Bensheim is a lovely little market town of some 

40,000 inhabitants in one of the warmest regions of 

Germany, on the ‘Bergstrasse’ a wine growing region 

situated between Darmstadt and Heidelberg, 55km 

south of Frankfurt. Bensheim averages 1,600 hours of 

sunshine a year and spring comes early to the 

Bergstrasse. 

The vineyards on the slopes to the east of the town 

lead into the wooded hills of the Odenwald, beautiful 

walking country. Bensheim’s history goes back about 

2,000 years. The town has many old timbered buildings 

in the old German style which are situated in the centre 

of the town and carefully restored. There are many 

bridges spanning the River Lauter and the pedestrian

welcoming cafés for one to 

enjoy. Bensheim offers 

cultural, sporting and 

social activities including 

the Bergstrasse Winzerfest 

starting the first weekend

Twinning 

Amersham/Krynica 

Lying near the southern border of Poland/ Slovakia 

and known as ‘The Pearl of the Polish Spas’, Krynica is 

full of charm. Protected from the wind, being on the 

south side of a mountain range and surrounded by tall 

forests, it is situated in a sheltered valley about 560-620 

metres above sea level. This together with the Polar 

Maritime and Continental air masses produces the 

healthiest of climates. The content of ozone in the air 

is approximately 30% higher than at sea level. Thus 

the mineral waters from the local springs together 

with the climate help in the cure of many chronic 

medical problems. 

The hot summer months (July being the warmest) 

are a dry heat and not humid, whilst the winter months 

(January being the coldest) are cold but crisp. Ideal for

tourism, in winter it becomes the epicentre of winter 

sports - ski runs with magnificent slopes (ski lifts and 

instructors), ice hockey, skating, sleighing, etc. 

In summer there are plenty of opportunities for 

camping, sailing, rafting and canoeing. Swimming is 

possible in many mountain rivers, outdoor and indoor 

swimming pools. Horse riding, hunting in season and 

angling are also available, together with a network of 

marked tourist tracks for hiking or cycling. 

Krynica also has some fine historical wooden 

churches and buildings, beautiful parks and 

monuments. Together with being within easy reach 

of many places of interest such as the fine city of 

Krakow and the salt mines of Wieliczka, certainly 

make it a place worthy of a visit.

Parish church of St Michael and 

All Angels, Amersham-on-the-Hill 

St Michael’s, the parish church of Amersham-on-the- 

Hill, is an oasis of quiet on busy Sycamore Road. The 

church is open throughout the day so that people can 

drop in for a moment of stillness and maybe light a 

candle to focus that stillness. 

The church building was completed in 1966 and 

extensively refurbished in 2007, including the 

installation of an interior ramp and a toilet with 

wheelchair access. The acoustics of St Michael’s make it 

an ideal venue for concerts. 

St Michael’s is well-known for its series of 

‘millennium lectures’, which have brought many 

distinguished speakers to Amersham-on-the-Hill to 

discuss significant issues of the day. Past speakers have 

included Lord Carey, Baroness Neuberger and Michael 

Mansfield QC. 

Many people today feel a desire to explore 

spirituality and to ponder deep questions about the 

meaning and purpose of our lives. St Michael’s does 

not claim to have all the answers but it does offer people 

the opportunity to explore such questions alongside 

others in an open, friendly and supportive atmosphere.

If you want to explore the profound questions about 

human life, without pressure, St Michael’s could be for 

you. There are Eucharists each Sunday at 8am and 

10am and on Tuesday at 10.30am. There is Morning 

Prayer each day, except Sunday at 8.30am. 

Parents and carers with pre-school age children 

enjoy Praise and Play, a short, stress-free time of 

worship with songs, a story, an activity and 

refreshments every other Wednesday at 10.30am. 

A similar time of worship for school-age children 

and their carers is held on alternate Wednesday 

afternoons at 3.45pm. 

As part of its healing ministry, St Michael’s offers 

healing sessions lasting 25 minutes on the first 

Wednesday of the month, between 4pm and 6pm in 

summer and 3pm and 5pm in winter months. There is 

no need to make an appointment. The laying-on of 

hands with anointing and prayer is offered at some 

Communion services during the year. 

St Michael’s enjoys a close relationship with Amersham 

Free Church and St John’s Methodist Church and is part of 

Churches Together in Amersham and Chesham Bois.

The Parish Church of St Mary 

The ancient Parish Church of St Mary was bestowed in 

1140 AD by Geoffrey de Mandeville, first Earl of Essex, 

in his foundation Charter upon Walden Abbey. The 

grant was confirmed by Henry II. The first resident 

Rector was appointed in 1222. 

The main portion of the nave was built at the 

beginning of the 12th century, the north and south 

aisles, the roof and western bay of the nave in the 14th 

century and the tower, lady chapel and south porch in 

the 15th century. Various styles of architecture of each 

period can be seen. On the exterior, the flints were 

added during the Victorian restoration. Since 1963, 

under the direction of Mr Sebastian Comper, FRIBA, 

much work has been done on the interior, including 

removing the pews, repairing the floor, decorating the 

walls, the chancel and south porch ceilings and adding 

the dossal behind the alter, thus restoring the church to 

its former medieval splendour. 

The brasses, re-laid in the north transept, date from 

1430. The Chapel of St. Catherine, destroyed by the 

Puritans in 1662, was restored in 1971. The east window 

contains fine 17th century glass. Also worthy of note is

the magnificent alabaster monument on the north side 

of the chancel in memory of Henry Curwen who died 

aged 14 in 1636 when a pupil of the then Rector. It was 

restored in 1980. 

The Drake Chapel, off the chancel, contains 

extremely fine monuments to the Tyrwhitt Drake 

family. Since the time of Elizabeth I they have been 

Squires of Amersham, representatives of the town in 

Parliament until 1832 and patrons of the living. In the 

last few years as well as its use as a place of worship, the 

church has increasingly been used for musical concerts 

and recitals of the highest quality.


Society 

The activities of the Amersham Society will interest all 

who care about Amersham Old Town and want to 

preserve its character and amenities. A key aim of the 

Society is to be actively involved in the conservation of 

a living town, not just the preservation of its past. 

We study all planning applications for the Old Town, 

opposing plans where necessary to maintain the 

character of the town, while encouraging sympathetic 

conversion of old buildings and high standards of 

design in new developments. 

The Society is involved in environmental issues of 

public concern and welcomes the views of its members. 

We have published leaflets and guides to help visitors to 

enjoy the historic town. Amersham Society members 

enjoy monthly lectures and discussions in the town’s 

17th century Market Hall from September to May. 

During the summer months there are also visits to 

places of interest. The Society website

a regular basis, complemented by the Society's 

longstanding newsletter published three times a year. 

The Society has nearly 500 members and welcomes

local artists, both amateur 

and professional, to display 

and offer their work for sale. 

The wealth of artistic talent on our doorstep in the 

Chilterns ensures a high standard of exhibits each year for 

which the Town Council is greatly appreciative. 

A small commission on each sale, along with visitors’ 

donations and exhibit entry fees provides the income to 

the Jubilee Fund. Each autumn the Town Council 

distributes this money by way of grants to local charitable 

organisations. 

The 2011 Festival of Art exhibited 334 works of art 

and sculpture. Commission on sales, exhibitors’ entry 

fees and visitor donations raised £1,506 for the Jubilee 

Fund. The majority of the work of organising this 

Festival of Art falls on the shoulders of a small committee 

of experienced local artists aided by more volunteers who 

steward the exhibition. The committee has been led by 

Ralph Maddox for the past ten years but he is now 

standing down and the incoming Chairman for the 2012 

festival is David Evans.

Amersham Museum – news & events 

Amersham Museum is a jewel in the centre of historic 

Old Amersham at 49 High Street. It is an awardwinning 

museum in an original Tudor hall-house with 

a delightful herb garden next to the River Misbourne. 

Families are always welcome, with many things for 

children to investigate and discover. See the fine timberframed 

building, follow the story of its development 

over time, and find out more about everyday life in the 

town through our unique collection of objects and 

photographs linked to local people and places. 

The Tudors are here! Who lived in a house like this in the 

1500s? What did they wear, what did they eat, what did 

they do? Come and play some Tudor games, try on a coif 

and cap and find out how terrible Tudor times really were. 

Amersham Toys. Our collection of wooden toys with 

the Amersham logo is still growing. They have been 

joined by Hornby, Dinky, and more toys played with by 

Amersham children from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The Amersham 

Action Group 

The prime function of The Amersham Action Group is 

to promote and progress revitalisation of Amershamon-the-Hill. 

The Group is sponsored – but not 

controlled – by Chiltern District Council. Our 

membership includes voluntary and local government 

organisations and a number of individuals with the best 

interests of the Town at heart, and all meet with the 

determination to ‘make a real difference’. The 

organisations represented include Amersham and 

District Residents Association, Churches Together, 

Lions, Rotary, several local businesses, HS2 Action 

Group, Youth Services, Bucks County Council. Chiltern 

District Council, Amersham Town Council. 

The Group meets regularly to develop and progress 

projects for the improvement of the town’s 

environment and enhancement of facilities. Whilst we 

do fund and manage some of the smaller activities from 

within Group resources, our main aim is to encourage 

development and funding from the wider community, 

and pursue grants from national sources. We also keep 

track of activities which may have an impact on the 

town – such as neighbourhood policing initiatives, 

planning applications, parking control proposals – and 

try to influence them for the benefit of our community. 

In partnership with our sister group, the 

Amersham Old Town Revitalisation Group, we 

completed and published a Market Town Health Check 

for the whole town. This is a series of documents 

reflecting the local community, its needs and 

aspirations, which were developed from detailed and 

widespread public consultation. These in turn led to the 

identifying of short to long term projects of various 

sizes which will be of benefit to the community and the 

formulation of a prioritised action plan. One project 

which has recently obtained funding approval is the 

refurbishment of St Michael’s Church forecourt in 

Sycamore Road in partnership with the church. 

We have worked with a small group of landlords of 

the major town centre properties to plan improvements 

to Sycamore Road, Woodside Road and Hill Avenue and

we seek to maintain impetus to this despite the 

economic climate. We have managed the construction 

of four brick built flower beds around the town which 

are planted and maintained by Amersham Town 

Council. We have coordinated and managed the 

Christmas Festival and Christmas lights in Amershamon-the-Hill. 

We are actively involved with various 

groups at all levels in a project to bring a one-way 

system into the centre of Amersham on the Hill, to 

allow for increased parking, enhanced streetscape and 

an overall revitalisation of the main shopping area. We 

have also undertaken the refurbishment of local signage 

(finger posts, notice boards etc) and currently are 

pursuing minor works to ‘lift’ the appearance of the 

town centre, for example the refurbishment of 

communal benches. 

We continue to progress longer term activity with 

landlords, and work concerned with enhancement of 

recreational and sports facilities for the benefit of the 

community. We are always very happy to welcome new 

members who feel they can contribute to our work.

Hodgemoor 

Polish Camp 

1947-1962 

Among the nationalities which made up the Allied 

forces during World War 2, were many divisions 

of soldiers and several squadrons of airmen from 

Poland. After the country had fallen to a double 

invasion, firstly by Hitler’s Nazi Germany from the west 

followed by Stalin’s Soviet Red Army from the east, 

many of those Polish fighters who survived and 

managed to escape, fled to the west. Here they carried 

on the fight alongside the allies, taking part in major 

battles, their successes have been documented. 

However the fall of Hitler did not bring freedom 

for Poland, because the devastated country was left 

under soviet occupation, along with many other Eastern 

European states. At the war’s end, the Poles who had 

fought with the western allies, were given the option of 

staying on this side of the Iron Curtain. Most of them 

chose to settle in the USA, Britain and France, rather 

than return to a Soviet-dominated communist 

totalitarian state. 

Although they are often described as refugees, 

many Poles rightly take umbrage at this term. The 

Oxford dictionary defines a refugee as: “a person taking 

refuge from persecution or from war.” The Poles who 

settled in the west had not come here to seek refuge 

from the Nazis, but to continue the fight. 

Over 120,000 Poles put their roots down in Britain, 

although unlike most other foreign minorities who have 

come to this country, they tended to spread themselves 

around. They settled in not only the large towns and 

cities, but also small towns, such as Amersham. The 

reason why Amersham has a sizeable Polish community 

is that after the war many servicemen and their families 

were housed in nearby camps which had been staffed by 

military personnel during the war. 

The largest of these camps was at Hodgemoor, 

which is just off the A355 Amersham to Beaconsfield 

Road. (See map). It consisted of prefabricated buildings 

and Nissan huts which housed 156 families.

The first families moved into Hodgemoor in 1947 

and within a few years, there was a thriving Polish 

community which had its own shop, post office, bar, 

village hall, schoolroom and most important of all, a 

catholic church. It was literally a tiny piece of Poland 

within the English countryside, a true Polish village. 

Although most of its residents communicated 

among themselves in Polish, they adapted to the English 

language and way of life very quickly, through work and 

school. Adults worked mainly in the factories of large 

nearby towns such as Slough and High Wycombe, while 

the children attended local English schools, most of 

them went to Chalfont St. Giles infants and primary 

school. As there was no public transport between the 

‘villages’, it is interesting to note that these children were 

driven to and from school mainly by Hodgemoor’s car 

owners who worked on night shifts. There were no 

school buses provided by local authorities in those days. 

Those families who could afford it, sent their children to 

private Polish boarding schools such as the one at 

Henley, where the curriculum included both English as 

well as Polish studies. 

The camp was divided into two and being situated 

on a hill, the separate districts were not surprisingly 

referred to the top camp and bottom camp, They were 

separated by fields and connected by a road, Bottrells 

Lane, which is still there today as the link road between 

the A355 and Chalfont St. Giles.

In between the two camps was an area in which four 

long Nissan huts housed the church, village hall, bar, shop, 

schoolhouse and library. Despite their rather temporary 

prefabricated appearance, the homes were comfortable 

and well equipped with all the basic amenities of the 

period. They all had running water, electricity and gas and 

a fair percentage of families owned televisions and cars. 

The most important events which took place in 

Hodgemoor were the religious festivals particularly at 

Easter, when the residents marched along Bottrells Lane 

in procession to the church. Once a week the camp even 

had a cinema, when a visiting projectionist showed not 

only Polish films, but also Hollywood favourites such as 

‘Tarzan’. As the post-war housing crisis eased, the 

Hodgemoor families gradually moved out. Those that 

bought houses moved mainly to Slough or High 

Wycombe, where they could be closer to their work. 

The camp was finally closed in 1962. Today all that 

remains of Hodgemoor Polish Camp is a plaque, 

within what is now a very popular National Trust 

Woodland Park. It is well worth a visit for its 

magnificent walking trails.

in the years since Amersham's first entry in 2007. 

Chestnut Lane Infant School won the best school in the 

region in 2009 and was highly commended in 2010, 

whilst Stony Dean School was highly commended in 

2011, very impressive given that the region covers the 

whole of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire & Berkshire. 

In recent years, Amersham in Bloom has evolved 

and now includes a number of events and competitions 

to stimulate the interest and creativity of local residents. 

These include the annual Young Photographer 

competition - sponsored by the Rotary Club of 

Amersham - for children below the age of 18 and the 

new Tallest Sunflower competition introduced in 2011. 

In line with the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic 

Games, Gold is our target for next year. Having received 

another prestigious award this year, it is hoped that 

interest and community participation will continue to 

grow in 2012 and in years to come. The annual 

Amersham in Bloom is a fantastic way to encourage the 

community to positively contribute to the town and create 

a town that we can all appreciate and feel proud to live.

Annual Clean Up Day 

As part of our continued commitment to Britain in 

Bloom, we organise an annual voluntary 'Clean Up' day 

in association with Amersham in Transition which has 

proved a huge success. On each occasion for the past 

three years, over 100 volunteers of all ages, including 

local school children, community groups and residents 

have given up their time to perform a variety of tasks 

including litter collection, weeding and other duties in 

order to help keep Amersham tidy. See the ATC website 

for further information and dates. 

Street Buddy Scheme 

Following the success of the Annual Clean Up Day, a 

new Street Buddy initiative has been launched. The 

scheme requires local residents to keep their street or 

other designated area free of litter. Each volunteer is 

provided with a high-visibility Street Buddy vest and 

litter-pick, supplied by Amersham Town Council. 

Interest in the scheme is steadily growing and we are 

hoping to recruit another 30 volunteers over the next 2 

years. If you are interested in volunteering to keep your

Citizen of the Year Awards 

Starting in 2008 as an annual event, the Citizen of the Year 

Awards were introduced to encourage local involvement in 

the community, to acknowledge and affirm the people 

currently doing this whilst also paying tribute to 

outstanding achievement and service. Nominations are 

required for the Amersham Citizen of the Year Awards. The 

Awards are presented by the Mayor at an event to be held 

in May. Each award winner will receive a trophy, certificate 

and cash prize. Those nominated need not necessarily be 

volunteers, but people who go 'above and beyond' the call 

of duty, someone who has made a difference in their area 

or who has gone the extra mile to achieve great things 

against the odds. Awards can be given for all kinds of work,

Chiltern Youth 

Projects 

Chiltern Youth Projects (CYP) was established in 2011 by 

a group of local volunteers to try and help provide youth 

services to young people in the local area. The work 

quickly grew to include regular weekly youth clubs, home 

study groups, detached street work, an open Friday night 

coffee shop, holidays, camps, schools' work, family 

support services and many special events and activities. 

CYP works in partnership with young people, our 

local Town, District and County Council, Thames Valley 

Police, local schools and the wider community in 

seeking to help young people grow into their full 

potential and experience life in all its fullness. 

The Project's Director, Duncan Dyason, has worked 

with children and young people for over 30 years and he 

and the team of local volunteers are committed to 

offering the very best to young people and have a vision 

to build a stronger, happier and more cohesive

We monitor planning applications and express our 

members’ views, we provide representation at 

Planning Appeals; 

The Millennium Flower Bed in front of the Free 

Church was planted by ADRA and is maintained by us;

in Amersham; 

We provide financial support for the Christmas lights; 

Our committee members are in regular contact with 

Councils to help them prioritise pot hole repairs and 

the maintenance of footpaths; 

Our social events provide an opportunity to enjoy a 

convivial evening with fellow members;

Stop HS2.

Amersham Band 

The brass band movement is another of Great Britain’s 

gifts to the world. It was borne out of the industrial 

developments in the nineteenth century when new 

communities sprang up and working men needed a 

social outlet. Much of the industry has gone but many 

of them survive with famous bands like Grimethorpe 

Colliery, Black Dyke and many others, continuing to 

play to the highest standards. The Salvation Army also 

has an impressive brass band tradition, producing many 

fine bands, composers and arrangers. 

Amersham Band was formed in 1890 and lapsed 

during both world wars. The current band was 

reformed in 1976 and has made steady progress. The 

Band is a fourth section band and a regular participant 

in The British Brass Band national contest. In 2000 and 

again in 2010 the Band qualified for the National Finals.

In 2010 the Band won the Southern Counties Amateur 

Brass Band Association’s third section contest and in 

2011 the second section contest, together with several 

individual awards including best conductor for Paul 

Fisher, our Musical Director. 

In 2011 the band hosted a Community Music Fest 

at The Elgiva Theatre, together with Amersham A 

Cappella, Chesham based Chrysalis Community Choir 

and local top trumpet soloist Andy Greenwood. It is 

hoped to make this a regular event and to help promote 

local music. 

Amersham Band’s Training Band also continues to 

flourish with a healthy membership comprising learners 

from 8 to 80 all finding enjoyment in making music in a 

relaxed atmosphere with support and guidance from 

senior band members. Over the years a number of 

players have graduated to the senior band and some 

have made a career in music as teachers and musicians. 

Brass banding provides a wonderful opportunity to 

make music, teaches the value of teamwork and helps 

develop personal skills. Visitors to our rehearsals are

Woodrow 

High House 

Set in the beautiful Chiltern Hills at Woodrow, near 

Amersham, in its own 24 acres of grounds, is Woodrow 

High House. This lovely old 17th century manor house, 

once occupied by Oliver Cromwell’s family during the 

Civil War, provides a variety of training and activity 

opportunities to some 4,000 young visitors who visit 

the House each year. 

The house is just one part of London Youth, a 

charity which provides dedicated support and services 

to some 75,000 children and young people through its 

member clubs, which are often situated in the poorest 

and most deprived areas of London. Young people from 

these clubs are enabled to visit Woodrow High House to 

experience the freedom that 24 acres can bring, 

challenge themselves to try new activities and even see 

the stars for the first time! 

A large number of local schools and those from 

further afield use Woodrow High House for their 

activity trips, providing development opportunities to 

compliment those that are provided in the school 

setting. These can be as week-long or part-week 

residential experiences, or in the form of a single day. 

Trips to the house are never forgotten. 

During the school holidays we run a series of day 

camps. Local children and young people visit us during 

the day and take part in activities including archery, 

craft and swimming. This provides a useful service for 

the working parent. Birthday parties held on site are 

also popular with local parents. 

Woodrow High House has its own, well attended, 

Swim School which accommodates almost 1,000 young 

people and adults for swimming lessons each term, and 

for a range of fitness sessions including Zumba, Legs 

Bums and Tums and Circuit Training. 

The house provides superb activity holidays for 

children with disabilities and learning difficulties

through its ‘Activenture’ programme offering residential 

activity courses whilst providing parents and carers with 

respite at the same time.

Children usually start school part-time at the beginning of the 

term in which they are five years old. Some schools use their 

discretion and admit children on a full-time basis, or operate 

an annual or two-term intake. Children currently receive 12.5

The town’s parks, recreation grounds and playing fields are 

of a high standard and the pavilion accommodation on the 

playing fields is excellent. The parks are situated in 

extremely pleasant settings. Barn Meadow, alongside the 

River Misbourne gives a panoramic view of the Old Town 

and its valley and Hervines Park on the Hill is set amid 

woodlands. 

Football and cricket may be played at all parks and at 

Hervines Park is the six rink bowling green. Adjacent to the 

town’s Civic Centre is the King George V Playing Field, 

founded by public subscription at the time of King George 

V’s Coronation and now used as a play area. 

For nature lovers, open spaces and woodlands have 

been conserved, including the Memorial Gardens and 

Church Mead in the Old Town, also Hervines Woods and 

Willow Wood. Parsonage Wood which covers 22 acres of 

hillside above the Old Town was purchased in 1995 by the 

Town Council from the Church Commissioners. 

Together these parks and open spaces form a not 

inconsiderable estate, which is well managed by the town’s 

Park Superintendent and Estates Manager. 

Leisure Centre – Chiltern Pools 

On the Civic Centre site at Chiltern Avenue, Chiltern District 

Council has an excellent Leisure Centre providing swimming 

and diving pools, flumes, gymnasium, pétanque/boules, 

astra turf facilities for football and a climbing centre.
