We have developed a great partnership with City Dweller over
the years. The magazines have been extremely popular with our
customers, both the main City Dweller magazine itself and the
Student Dweller guide which flies off the shelves in September!
City Dweller has given us a great opportunity to shout about our
organisation within the pages of the magazine, which has helped
us increase our profile and drive customers through our doors.
Passing of a
True Fashion Icon
As I was preparing to write an article
about upcoming styles for Autumn,
I heard the sad news that a true
style Icon had passed away, and
the legacy that she has left behind
seems more of an important factor
to educate the people of Leeds on
rather than what we’ll be wearing in
the next few months, as personally,
Anna Piaggi
had it not been for her, there’s
a strong possibility that fashion in general would
have progressed at a more conservative rate than an
extreme.
It could be said she was the mother of the modern
fashion industry. Anna Piaggi was impossible to
describe but really easy to recognize!
She was actually not just a visionary, she was revolutionary!
With her trade mark blue hair and rouged cheeks, she was
a muse to both Karl Lagerfeld and Manolo Blahnik, and the
inspiration behind Marc Jacobs new A/W collection for 2012.
No matter the decade or fad, Anna stuck to her style guns. Like
all style icons, Anna Piaggi beat to her own drum! She must
be the most unconventional style icon, yet, It’s incredible to see
such a bizarre wardrobe and personal style be the most fashion
forward of all. She sadly died on August 7th at the age of 81.
Anna embodied the confident style conviction that some of us
are still striving to find. For her, I can only imagine that achieving
her unique look everyday was like taking a blank canvas and
painting it several times before adding even more paint and
sparkle to create her daily masterpiece. Some might say she
looked like she’d been dipped in glue and thrown into a dressing
up box, but I don’t believe for a minute she had the same ‘closet
conundrums’ as most people do...
“...and she reportedly had 265 pairs
of shoes, 932 hats and
nearly 3,000 dresses! ”
We all stand and stare into our wardrobes in the morning feeling
clueless as to what to do next...Well, why not let Anna Piaggi’s
legacy be a style lesson for us all. No matter what your style
preference, why not wear your wardrobe like art everyday?
Leeds is a thriving hive of independant shops, styles and
personalities. We have a creative community like no other city,
myself included, to create one-off couture pieces, a host of
independent boutiques such as Lisa Jayne Dann in the new
Central arcade and a great selection of vintage shops such as
Birds Yard, who we may not have had, had it not been for Anna
Piaggi who practically invented the concept of vintage when
nobody imagined buying and wearing used clothes.
Milliner Stephen Jones described Anna as not only his muse
but “a talisman for all those around the world who believe that
fashion is a way of life and that freedom of expression should
manifest itself in what we wear.”
I want to be a Real
Housewife…Not a
Desperate one or a
Scousewife (although I
do have the eyebrows!)
No, a Real Housewife!
No idea what I mean? Well
you have missed out! The Real
Housewife series introduces
us to groups of women from
rich parts of America who
lead really quite bonkers lives
whilst looking fabulous!
My favourites are the New
York or OC wives. A mix of
groomed (slightly surgically
enhanced) faces, gossip, glam
parties and gorgeous clothes
all packaged up in an hour
long romp at 9.30am weekday
mornings.
Like the Real Housewives
I work (they just call it
‘projects’!). Therefore I Skyplus
it and indulge myself on
10 episodes at a time. At the
end of my latest binge I was
inspired to live a little bit more
‘Real’ and this is how I went
about it…
Grooming:
There is not a lot of time for
rest in a Real Housewife life
so we have to fake it! I am not
quite ready for any surgical
enhancements but I am more
than happy to rely on a bit of
science! My latest discovery
is thanks to Lancome. Their
Absolue L’Extrait is quite
possibly a miracle in a pretty
bottle.
The elixir of regeneration is a
concentration of extracts from
plant stem cells capable of
stimulating human skin stem
cells….how fabulously fabulous
does that sound?
Katherine
Busby, City
Dweller and
Fashionista...
Gossip:
Not only does the Absolue
L’Extrait make me feel
glowy I have also had FOUR
compliments on my skin this
month…..in my mind that
means people are gossiping
about how glowing I look! As a
Real Housewife it is imperative
people are talking about you!
Glam Parties:
As a Real Housewife, parties
are what it’s all about! This
month’s highlights included a
great get together organised
by City Dweller at Napoleon’s
casino. I loved it. I also learned
to play Punto Banco…a
favourite game of Tamra
from Real Housewives of
OC! Definite Real Housewife
behaviour!
“As a Real
Housewife,
Parties are what
it’s all about! ”
Gorgeous clothes:
This was easy! I checked in
with my friend David (personal
shopper for Harvey Nichols)
for a champagne breakfast
and a spot of retail therapy.
My favourite purchase was a
pair of Lucy Choi heels.
After my day of retail therapy
I went back to our home to
an empty fridge, tonnes of
washing and a flat that is
definitely more shabby than
chic….sometimes the life of
a housewife is a little bit too
real!
A SYMPHONY OF
BRITISH MUSIC
750 million people watched it, about half
of them cried and half of them wondered
‘who is this Emeli Sande and why is she on
so much?’. We’re talking about the Closing
Ceremony of the Olympics of course and
now you can relive it all through your ears!
Yes, remember how you felt when you saw
the pointy hatted Pet Shop Boys. Then revel
in the memories of One Direction’s bouncy
performance, not to mention their lovely
bouncy hair. There was George Michael’s
brilliant advert for his new song, Fatboy
Slim bopping under an Octopus, and who
could forget the Spice Women on their taxi
rides from hell? All great moments, but not
necessarily the best songs.
We loved Kate Bush and Running Up That
Hill, John Lennon’s Imagine, David Bowie’s
Fashion, My Generation by The Who and
Queen’s We Will Rock You. Because for us,
these tracks are pure gold from the truly
Great British flames.
And what about our Great British Humour?
We were all surprised by Russell Brand’s
foray in to the role of rock star with I Am The
Walrus. However, we were slightly more
surprised by Eric Idle’s swear during Always
Look On The Bright Side Of Life. Yes, we
knew it was in the song - no, we didn’t think
he would hit the World with it, live on telly.
So who have we left out? The Kaiser’s
nailing Pinball Wizard, Elbow stunning us
with One Day Like This, Muse, Jessie J. Ray
Davies, Madness, Take That…. Seriously we
could go on. What a show, what a legacy,
what a brilliant album.
Dixie and Gayle’s Real CD Review
SPECTOR THE SPECIALS
They’re named after one of the most
successful and arguably most controversial
producers of all time, but will they live up to
their name? Or will they live up to the album
title and just be another flash in the pan? It’s
hard to say.
Spector are without doubt, stylish. They’re all
suited and booted with a male model for a
bassist, who looks like the Brandon Flowers
from the Killers. Plus, they’ve got a lead
singer with moves like Cocker (Jarvis that is)
mixed with vocals like Bryan Ferry. In fact this
kind of sums up their sound too!
Upset Boulevard, Twenty Nothing and True
love are achingly close to the synthy rock
sound of the Killers, tinged with a strong
hint of Roxy Music and David Bowie.
Chevy Thunder released earlier this year, is
pumping, driving and relentless, but grittier
than the previous tracks as it feels more
Libertines meets Ramones. It’s certainly dirty
and American, quite an achievement for
some clean looking boys from Camden.
Grey Shirt and Tie, one of their biggest
singles from last year, in total contrast is as
polished and electro as an old OMD track
and this one is a surprising grower.
“But our favourite song on the
album is Celestine. It’s gloriously
upbeat, utterly uplifting and just
when you think it’s faded out, it
comes back for a reprise which
is like seeing the sun rise for the
second time on a perfect day.”
All in all, Spector are oddly eclectic, reflective
and their look is effective. Only you can stop
them being another super cool band going
nowhere!
How does a band like The Specials make
any money with a whopping eleven
members? Well, they did a tour in 2011 and
they milked their biggest single Ghost Town
in every town they visited! Yes for 6 minutes
these Two Tone Ska Maestros pumped
out their hit about unemployment, to the
rapturous cheers of a crowd reliving their
misspent youth.
Other huge crowd pleasers on this double
album include; Gangsters, their debut
single from 1979; A Message To You Rudy
an awesome cover and a real classic; And
obviously Too Much Too Young - the band’s
first number one from 1980, which comes
across so vibrantly you can actually feel the
crowd bouncing along.
Singing alongs are also welcomed here!
In fact some tracks hardly require the
distinctive vocals of Terry Hall, because
through time, they have become almost
football chants. Most notably ‘Where did
you get that Blank Expression on your face!’
is belted out by the crowd. Stereotype, Rat
Race and Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You
Think) also get this joyous treatment.
We particularly loved the wild abandon of
Monkey Man (an old Toots and The Maytals
song) contrasted with the blissful sleepiness
of Friday Night, Saturday Morning.
To sum up, The Specials have had a massive
party and if you were there, this will be the
perfect souvenir. But if you weren’t there and
fancy a little taster, you can check out this
incredible band performing in the closing
ceremony concert of The Olympics…. and
that will be anything but a ghost town.
City-Dweller Review
The Pet Shop Boys
RELEASE THEIR NEW
SINGLE “LEAVING”
Pet Shop Boys will release their
new single “Leaving” digitally
on Parlophone Records. The
new single is taken from their
brand new album “Elysium”.
“Leaving” will be available on CD,
12” vinyl and download bundles
with extra tracks and remixes.
There are two different covers
- one featuring Neil Tennant,
the other Chris Lowe.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe
recorded ‘Elysium’ earlier this
year in Los Angeles, the first time
they have recorded an album in
America. They co-produced the
record with US producer Andrew
CONOR MAYNARD
If you go online to buy 19 year old Conor
Maynard’s debut album, they may also
suggest you buy Justin Bieber and Jedward!
It’s true, they are all boys, who spend too
much time on their hair and Maynard like
Bieber was discovered via You Tube.
However, this is where the comparison
ends because Conor is definitely more
Justin Timberlake than Justin Bieber and
despite the first name, he is not Irish. In fact
he is from Brighton and the coolest people
in the World are falling over themselves to
work with him.
For example, on this fantastic debut album
you will hear the Grammy Award Winning
Ne-Yo in a catchy song called Turn Around.
Plus rapper, producer, singer and fashion
designer - Pharell helps out on Lift Off which
sounds just like Inner City’s Good Life from
the late eighties. You’ll also hear awesome
Rita Ora dwarfing the young lad vocally, but
in a really good pop song.
“And talking of good pop
songs, the number two hit
Can’t Say No is on here, which
is hormone-tastic as we are
reminded again and again that
Conor can’t say no to girls.”
Indeed it’s a sentiment that rings throughout
the album from the first track Animal to the
latest single Vegas Girl which was produced
by the people behind Jessie J’s Do it Like a
Dude and D.J. Fresh’s Hot Right Now.
And make no mistake, he is hot right now!
It’s Conor Fever, there is no cure and it’s
going to make him a lot of pocket money.
Dawson, who has won three
Grammys for his work on Kanye
West’s albums.
The album will be available in
standard CD, digital download, 12”
vinyl and limited edition double
CD where the bonus disc contains
an instrumental mix of the album.
The album has also received
special mastering for the
iTunes version.
we really seem to be a city that
enjoys eating out – it seems like
every month somewhere new opens,
which is great, but it’s nice to revisit
some of the cities gems every now
and then! i felt like a bit of midweek
poshness, so hit the Malmaison
with my friend Becky, and what an
awesome time we had! starting
with a cheeky watermelon and
cucumber cooler in the bar and
heading through for what turned
into 3 courses.
we ate from both the specials and the set menu… i was in a fish
mood and started with cornish crab and avocado fritters, like
chicken nuggets, but avocado, and then had cajun swordfish.
Becky had the specials, smoked salmon, turned red from
beetroot and then ham hock… all pretty delicious. the best
was yet to come though. when it comes to cheese i’m a bit of a
cheddar and crisps man, not Becky, she loves a cheese board!
what a selection there was… 15 in total to choose from, and i
can say for a cheese novice like myself, this was a great way to
try lots of different types… i’m a convert! i’m now living by the
motto – there’s more to life than Babybel!
what to do after such a fab meal? head across the road to the
Bridge of course, for Judy’s wednesday Quiz night… which then
turned into shots in the penny till 3am, enough said about that!
And finally for this month… the X factor is back! saturday nights
feel normal again… i caught up with Amelia lily (finished 3rd
place last year, loves a hat… remember her?!) and rather than
talking about her music, we ended up talking cats, she gave me
some tips on looking after my holidaying bosses kitten… wear
gloves to stop the scratches! Genius.
I pretty much had the same impression as everybody
else. I initially started working for a different casino from
Napoleons and passed my gruelling 6 week training
course with growing excitement for the big day when I
would be let loose on real customers. As this time came
and went and I became more experienced I realised with a
growing respect for my colleagues, that this was actually
a very skilled job and I was surrounded by well dressed,
well groomed professionals to boot.
Two years later it was time to travel. I did two World
Cruises and all the Caribbean islands before I came
back to what I now call home.
“ Napoleons is a traditional gambling
club with traditional values. “
It’s not a big corporation but a family run business which I
think affords it an intimacy unlike any other. Everybody is
immaculate and high standards of customer service and
professionalism are without exception. The casino itself
is luxurious, high tech and glamorous. Coupled with the
benefits available to the staff it’s a joy to work here.
We’ve been working now for two months with City Dweller. We first came
across the magazine when a copy made it’s way into our office and decided
that it would project the right image for our business. We have found them to
be very innovative and enthusiastic to work with and offer a wide range of
advertising opportunities. I would recommend using the magazine’s slick and
modern reputation as the building blocks for promoting your company.
City Jobs
It’s Reputation,
not all doom and
gloom Road out Rage there and on
the Repercussions
Jobs front
Craig Burton offers us
some helpful hints!
Just Do IT!
Dale Carnegie is the first personal
development coach Born in 1888.
Most “Coaches” still use his material as
a basis of their courses. This is a mantra
we were made to shout and cream
in a training course; “I know people in
the “Ranks” who will stay in the “Ranks”
why? I’ll tell you why; BECAUSE THEY
HAVENT GOT THE ABILITY TO GET THINGS
DONE! I beat myself up over this more
than anything. JUST DO IT! The most
frustrating, annoying and stressful thing
for any manager is having to ask for a
reasonable request twice. There are only
three reasons why people don’t finish or
in some case “Start” a task. a) They don’t
know HOW to do it. b) They don’t’ WANT
to do it. C) They are sticking their FINGERS
up! JUST DO IT, if you don’t know how-ask.
“Doers are winners, always” think about
the most successful people you work
with. I bet they just DO IT
We’ve had some interesting feedback
from the last column and some great
questions.
I work for a Manufacturing company
and we are constantly reminded by
permanent staff that “We are only
temps” and that we can get laid off
at any time and that we ‘re the reason
they don’t get offered overtime. Its
making me feel like I’m not valued
what should I do? Geoff-Leeds 10
This doesn’t happen as often as it did but
there are still some companies that still
discriminate against temporary workers.
We see it with more Eastern European
workers. Let’s get this straight. Temporary
and Flexible workers are one of the main
reason the UK can stay competitive in
Europe. Contract workers and Temps in
my eyes are amazing. They often have
to learn new skills in a much shorter time
frame than permanent worker and
have less job security. Tell your agency
contact. They should be offering you
appraisals and reviews and in some
cases chance to do NVQ training if
they are any good. You should receive
regular e-mails and texts from your
agency checking on your well-being
too. They have moral a responsibility to
make you feel valued. (Or find a new
job. Vote with your feet! Great people
are always in demand)
I am currently temping in a Customer
Service role. Permanent roles keep
coming up and I’m never selected for
them. Even though I’ve been doing
the same job here longer than other
temps. Donna- Leeds 2
This is a difficult one Donna. I’m afraid
the first thing I’d look at is “Myself”. Am
I a “Doer”? Am I punctual? Do I ask the
right questions? Am I eager to learn new
things? Do I have the right attitude to work?
Attitudes are contagious at work (is yours
worth catching?) This may sound shallow;
but do you look right? Dress to impress
at work. You’re there a long time and
whether we admit this or not. People WILL
judge you by how you present yourself.
I’m sat writing this with a bandaged knee
in a suit shirt and tie. I could just as easily
come in my slippers to work.. If none of
the above just ask your supervisor “what
would have to happen for you to be
considered”. (Do not be confrontational
though or you’ve no chance lovey)
My boss keeps looking at me in that
“Old Fashioned” way. Whenever
he walks past me he’ll squeeze my
shoulder or brush against me. He
asks me all about my private life and
where I drink and If I have a boyfriend.
Should I report him? Ryan-Leeds 12
Crikey Ryan. OK, first and foremost
48% of relationships are “Work”
generated. Think about it. If there
wasn’t any harmless flirting at work
the UK would have a population
plummet in a breath! Your Boss hasn’t
actually done anything “Wrong” if this
becomes sexual and uncomfortably
personal that’s a another matter and
you need to request a meeting with
a senior member of the company or
even just let your boss know “Formally”
but calmly he’s making you feel this
way. He may not even realise you’ve
taken it like this. Document it too, just
in-case it’s more than a little affection.
(I wish Craig.Burton@
I had a fiver for every Secretary
that ran off with the Boss)
TENANTS &
LANDLORDS NEED
PROTECTION
FROM ROGUE
LETTING AGENTS
It was interesting to read a report
earlier this month that shows
the number of people living in
privately owned rental properties
will overtake those living in
council and local authority
owned homes as of next year.
However large parts of the
industry have not kept pace with
this growth and as it continues
to expand both tenants and
landlords are increasingly at
risk from fraudulent companies
operating as letting agents.
It’s no secret that the private
rented sector has been one
of the big success stories to
emerge from the recession
due to a shortage of mortgage
liquidity which is making it
difficult for many people to get
on the property ladder. As a
result, lots of new letting agents
have appeared on the scene
over the last couple of years.
Most offer a valuable service
and do a good job but there
are also plenty out there acting
in their own short-term interests.
Too many tenants and landlords
are being short-changed
by these dodgy, here today
and gone tomorrow firms so
something drastic needs to
happen to offer a decent
level of protection.
The aforementioned report was
produced by the Labour Party
and is a policy review document
titled ‘Private Rented Housing’.
According to this, England’s
private rented sector consists
of 3.6 million households and
from next year it will be the first time
more people have rented privately,
than rented a social home, in 50
years!
The document looks at how it
can deliver change and fairness
in the current economic climate
to the private rented sector and
considers how it can put a stop
to unscrupulous agents that are
charging tenants and landlords
unjustifiably high fees.
As part of this policy review, Labour
is planning to work with the sector
to identify ways of improving
standards in order to create a
level playing field for responsible
operators as well as protection for
tenants and landlords. It also says
it will consider a code of conduct
for the industry and look at how
compliance could be monitored
and perhaps even introduce a
regulatory body with enforcement
powers. This is good news for the
industry because any steps to
eradicate unscrupulous agents
will have a positive effect.
However in the meantime there
are some simple precautions that
tenants and landlords can take to
help stamp out fraudulent agents
and protect themselves from
becoming a victim of these rouge
operators.
It’s always important to research a
business before handing over any
money and you should only deal
with responsible firms that act fairly
and professionally.
Also don’t be afraid to ask up front
what fees the letting agent charges
for handling administrative work,
such as checking references and
whether they require a holding
deposit to secure the property.
Making sure they use a tenancy
deposit protection (TDP) scheme
is also essential to ensure that your
deposit is kept safe. There are three
approved schemes to protect
deposits known as the Deposit
Protection Service (DPS), MyDeposit
and The Dispute Service (TDS). If
any other scheme is used then your
deposit won’t be protected by law.
Thankfully there are lots of great
letting agents out there and
hopefully by following these simple
points you can make sure your next
letting experience runs smoothly.
Lighting should reflect your mood and
function. It is crucial to spend time at
very important and can create a focal
point in the absence of a fire place. I
would always recommend using floor
mounted lighting located around the
perimeter of the room, particularly in
entrance areas and hallways.
Skyline
Exciting times for
The Skyline apartments
at St Peters Square have
recently been graced with
a convenience store on
the ground floor of the
development which is fantastic
for the residents. However, the
really exciting news here is
that John Lewis have signed
up to the Eastgate scheme as
anchor tenant, which is more
exciting news for the Leeds
retail centre. The first phase
is expected to complete in
2016 and introduce up to 30
new shops including a 24,000
square foot John Lewis, 6
restaurants and a car park on
the site of the Millgarth police
station.
City Dwellers...
Aside from meeting 100’s of newbie city centre dwellers and some who’ve been kicking
around for a while, being based on The Calls, we get to hear a lot of the city’s hot gossip and
news before it becomes public knowledge - be it the emergence of a new bar, long awaited
restaurant or simply who‘s been seen dating who!
We are always keeping our eyes and ears open for the latest in city living gossip because
it’s always good for our team to be able to talk to clients about what’s going on in the area
when we are showing them around an apartment.
We can’t publish the juicy gossip on who’s dating who in here, but we can tell you about
some of the exciting developments where we are currently marketing apartments where
interesting changes and new places to eat, drink and shop ‘til you drop are happening;
the exchange
This development offers loads of character
and only 8 apartments, truly a boutique
block in the heart of the city centre. Close
by, Reds True Barbecue is set to open in
September on the corner of Call Lane,
which will be a meat extravaganza when
it arrives offering the best in American
barbecue. Also close by is the Trinity
shopping centre, which is now starting to
take shape with its impressive architecture,
due for completion spring 2013.
greenhouse
Greenhouse is now a very established
development but that doesn’t stop
the developer Citu from titillating and
improving their incredibly popular
development. Recent developments have
included Virgin Media installing a digital
system to the development meaning
residents can now receive Virgin digital
television. Another change is the onsite Deli,
which is going under a face lift at present
to create extra seating areas in addition to
the bar area. A suggestions board has been
erected whilst the deli has been closed to
give residents an opportunity to give input
ready for the re opening in September.
indigo Blu
It is nearly 12 months since the very first
floor of brand new apartments in this luxury
development was released and with the 7th
and final floor expected to be ready from
September, it is perfect timing as Carlsberg
approach the completion of clearing the former
Tetley’s Brewery site. This is expected to make
way in the short term for green space, an art
gallery and parking, as well as the re opening
of Hunslet Road which will link Indigo with The
famous Adelphi Pub. The 4th floor roof top
terrace is due for completion in August - just in
time for the end of summer sun!
she could reel this thread around
her fingers. Subsequently, she
persuaded her husband to allow
her to rear silkworms on a grove of
mulberry trees, and using the silk
reel, an invention of hers, to draw
the fibres from the cocoon into a
single thread so that they would be
strong enough to be weaved into silk.
Silk quickly grew into a symbol of
status, and originally, only members
of the royal family were entitled to
wear it. Fortunately, today you don’t
have to be royal to immerse yourself
in the luxury of silk.
It can provide a rich element to any
room when you use it for curtains,
pillows or even as an upholstery
covering. It has a soft lustre to it and
the fibres themselves are actually
prism like, which is why the material
shines and reflects light at various
angles.
It is also hypoallergenic because
of its natural protein structure and
takes colour well which means that
you have unlimited colour choice
for your home.
1. Proper Nutrition
Now this doesn’t mean starve
yourself... You need to fuel your
body with good quality, clean
food. Always ensure you meet
your protein requirements and stick
to wholemeal or wholegrain carbs.
2. Lift Weights
PLEASE don’t come to the gym just to spend hours
on the treadmill or any other piece of cardio
equipment and consider that a legitimate workout.
Be bold - pick up the weights - the way to shape
and tone your body!
3. Cardio
If you want to do cardio, consider adding interval
training to your routine. Interval Training gets your
heart rate up and fat burning going in half the time.
4. Variation
Your body is an adaption machine, so to continue
getting results you must either increase weights used
or vary the rep rates - Your body cant know what’s
coming, this way it will always be under stress and
adapt to it...
5. Track Results
Keep a track of your workouts, weight used and rep
ranges. This way you can see what you did the previous
week and aim to do better. Progression is the key!
Casa Mia
My partner and I called into Casa Mia Italian restaurant at
Millennium square for dinner after work and were pleasantly
surprised.
The dinner menu was reasonably priced
considering the quality and somewhat
liberal portions served. A moderately
diverse menu consisting of pasta,
chicken, meatballs, pizza, pork, beef
and a small yet appetizing selection of
seafood choices are represented and
from the moment you’re seated, the
entire family should have a relatively easy
time selecting an appetizer or two in
commencement of the dining experience.
After carefully considering and weighing
all essentials (starting with the wine
selection) of which I personally find
critical elements which can either make
or break a premier dining experience,
any or all of which may indeed differ
demonstrably from your culinary criteria,
I’ve subsequently decided Casa Mia
provides a very desirable mainstream,
ethnically themed environment conducive
to a charmingly quaint night out.
In summary, whether you are calling in
after work, having a celebration or dinner
before hitting the town Casa Mia has to be
one of the top places to start. And if you
are lucky enough to catch the sunshine
they have “Al fresco” dining too, set at
the side of the fabulous Mandela Gardens
where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle
of the City sounds. Simply a must visit.
barrel of Sam adams beer, they didn’t
have to do much persuading.
The hip Call Lane joint, whose motto is ‘funk,
if you are watching your waist, the Cajun Chicken
There is a very tasty vegetarian burger, with
Scissor Sisters
as part of their tour, come to Leeds...
New York pop superstars,
Scissor Sisters bring their
renowned live show to the
UK for a nationwide-tour
for Autumn 2012.
The band promise to bring their
usual pomp and flair to the live
dates.
The Guardian said of their recent
London show that the group should
be credited with influencing a string
of chart-topping artists including
Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj. A four
star review from The Times called
the show a ‘glorious mash-up of gig,
polysexual revue and saucer-eyed
rave’ – and if that doesn’t encourage
you to come down to ‘have a kiki’,
nothing will.
The band released their fourth
album, ‘Magic Hour,’ in May, and
saw Scissor Sisters - Jake Shears,
Babydaddy, Ana Matronic and Del
Marquis - working with a diverse
list of collaborators, from Calvin
Harris, Pharrell Williams, Diplo to
Azealia Banks.
Since bursting onto the scene
in 2004, Scissor Sisters have
sold over 4.5 million Their third
studio album Night Work (2010)
displayed a shift towards a more
club-oriented sound, charting at
number two on the UK Albums
Chart, number one on Billboard’s
Top Independent Albums chart
and in the top 10 of several
international territories. The band
released their fourth studio album
DAYS OUT
FEATURES
City Dweller Magazine have teamed
up with the guys at welcome to
Yorkshire to look at some Yorkshire
days out. Here is one of their
suggestions with all the makings for a
wild day out.
Swaying palm trees, clear blues skies, zebras
grazing, and monkeys roaming free all
conjure up images of Kenya or perhaps even
Madagascar. But there’s no need to jet off
halfway round the world – just make the short
hop down the A1 to Doncaster for a wild time
at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
With creatively designed enclosures to rival
anywhere in Europe – not to mention their
collection of animals – it’s a must-visit if you
love animals or just a good day out. The park
first opened in 2009 and it’s been a roaring
success. Visitor numbers have rocketed – and
it’s easy to see why. Easy parking and access
means the visit starts off right and because
the flow of people around the park moves in
different directions, you are rarely queuing to
get site of the animals, which is great.
A good tip is arrive early doors so you can plan
your movements to coincide with the excellent
animal talks, which are roughly every half an
hour in different locations. The cafe and loos
are just as you go in, so it’s a good place base
while you plan. If you don’t get to all the talks,
don’t worry as the excellent signage around the
park tells you some real nuggets of info about
the species in general as well as detailed info
about individual animals – right down to their
name and characteristics. We played guess
which lion is which!
Speaking of those majestic beasts, Lion
Country is made up of three separate themed,
spacious enclosures and home to several lions
rescued from a Romanian zoo by dedicated
park director Cheryl Williams and her team.
They now very happily live in the vast 10-acre
enclosure and from what we could see – very
well as it goes – they couldn’t have looked
happier. That’s the beauty of the park – you
get to see the animals from excellent vantage
points, without the park having to skimp on
space. That all makes for happy visitors and
happy animals.
Another must on a visit is a trip to Leopard
Heights, which opened in May and is the
biggest leopard enclosure of its kind in the
world. It’s spectacular. The Amur Leopard, the
most endangered carnivore in the world, is
a beautiful creature and the newly designed
habitat provides plenty of creative climbing
for the animals and lower and upper viewing
platforms mean visitors get an unobstructed
view, transporting you to their natural habitat
in the wild.
www.city-dweller.co.uk
YORKSHIRE
WILDLIFE
PARK
On our visit, we also came face-to-face with
a rather magnificent camel. I don’t know his/
her name, but it was the epitome of cool and
really loved the attention – especially from Liv,
our six-month-old daughter. If you want to get
the full experience, you have to head through
the big gates into one of the walk through
enclosures. Take your pick from Lemur,
leaping wallabies or for something a little
more Latin, check out the South America Viva.
There’s also African plains, Land of the Tiger
and meerkats to name just some of many
others that you can witness enjoying their
spacious homes. If the kids still have some
energy to burn off, there’s also an impressive
indoor and outdoor play area.
Sure, we might not have Africa’s climate, but
Yorkshire certainly has the animals – and all
the makings for a wild day out.
