Passing of a 

True Fashion Icon 

As I was preparing to write an article 

about upcoming styles for Autumn, 

I heard the sad news that a true 

style Icon had passed away, and 

the legacy that she has left behind 

seems more of an important factor 

to educate the people of Leeds on 

rather than what we’ll be wearing in 

the next few months, as personally, 

Anna Piaggi 

had it not been for her, there’s 

a strong possibility that fashion in general would 

have progressed at a more conservative rate than an 

extreme. 

It could be said she was the mother of the modern 

fashion industry. Anna Piaggi was impossible to 

describe but really easy to recognize! 

She was actually not just a visionary, she was revolutionary! 

With her trade mark blue hair and rouged cheeks, she was 

a muse to both Karl Lagerfeld and Manolo Blahnik, and the 

inspiration behind Marc Jacobs new A/W collection for 2012. 

No matter the decade or fad, Anna stuck to her style guns. Like 

all style icons, Anna Piaggi beat to her own drum! She must 

be the most unconventional style icon, yet, It’s incredible to see 

such a bizarre wardrobe and personal style be the most fashion 

forward of all. She sadly died on August 7th at the age of 81. 

Anna embodied the confident style conviction that some of us 

are still striving to find. For her, I can only imagine that achieving 

her unique look everyday was like taking a blank canvas and 

painting it several times before adding even more paint and 

sparkle to create her daily masterpiece. Some might say she 

looked like she’d been dipped in glue and thrown into a dressing 

up box, but I don’t believe for a minute she had the same ‘closet 

conundrums’ as most people do... 

“...and she reportedly had 265 pairs 

of shoes, 932 hats and 

nearly 3,000 dresses! ” 

We all stand and stare into our wardrobes in the morning feeling 

clueless as to what to do next...Well, why not let Anna Piaggi’s 

legacy be a style lesson for us all. No matter what your style 

preference, why not wear your wardrobe like art everyday? 

Leeds is a thriving hive of independant shops, styles and 

personalities. We have a creative community like no other city, 

myself included, to create one-off couture pieces, a host of 

independent boutiques such as Lisa Jayne Dann in the new 

Central arcade and a great selection of vintage shops such as 

Birds Yard, who we may not have had, had it not been for Anna 

Piaggi who practically invented the concept of vintage when 

nobody imagined buying and wearing used clothes. 

Milliner Stephen Jones described Anna as not only his muse 

but “a talisman for all those around the world who believe that 

fashion is a way of life and that freedom of expression should 

manifest itself in what we wear.”

I want to be a Real 

Housewife…Not a

Housewife series introduces 

us to groups of women from 

rich parts of America who 

lead really quite bonkers lives 

whilst looking fabulous! 

My favourites are the New 

York or OC wives. A mix of 

groomed (slightly surgically 

enhanced) faces, gossip, glam 

parties and gorgeous clothes 

all packaged up in an hour 

long romp at 9.30am weekday 

mornings. 

Like the Real Housewives 

I work (they just call it 

‘projects’!). Therefore I Skyplus 

it and indulge myself on 

10 episodes at a time. At the 

end of my latest binge I was 

inspired to live a little bit more 

‘Real’ and this is how I went 

about it… 

Grooming: 

There is not a lot of time for 

rest in a Real Housewife life 

so we have to fake it! I am not 

quite ready for any surgical 

enhancements but I am more 

than happy to rely on a bit of 

science! My latest discovery 

is thanks to Lancome. Their 

Absolue L’Extrait is quite 

possibly a miracle in a pretty 

bottle. 

The elixir of regeneration is a 

concentration of extracts from 

plant stem cells capable of 

stimulating human skin stem 

cells….how fabulously fabulous 

does that sound?

A SYMPHONY OF 

BRITISH MUSIC 

750 million people watched it, about half 

of them cried and half of them wondered 

‘who is this Emeli Sande and why is she on 

so much?’. We’re talking about the Closing 

Ceremony of the Olympics of course and 

now you can relive it all through your ears! 

Yes, remember how you felt when you saw 

the pointy hatted Pet Shop Boys. Then revel 

in the memories of One Direction’s bouncy 

performance, not to mention their lovely 

bouncy hair. There was George Michael’s 

brilliant advert for his new song, Fatboy 

Slim bopping under an Octopus, and who 

could forget the Spice Women on their taxi 

rides from hell? All great moments, but not 

necessarily the best songs. 

We loved Kate Bush and Running Up That 

Hill, John Lennon’s Imagine, David Bowie’s 

Fashion, My Generation by The Who and 

Queen’s We Will Rock You. Because for us, 

these tracks are pure gold from the truly 

Great British flames. 

And what about our Great British Humour? 

We were all surprised by Russell Brand’s 

foray in to the role of rock star with I Am The 

Walrus. However, we were slightly more 

surprised by Eric Idle’s swear during Always 

Look On The Bright Side Of Life. Yes, we 

knew it was in the song - no, we didn’t think 

he would hit the World with it, live on telly. 

So who have we left out? The Kaiser’s 

nailing Pinball Wizard, Elbow stunning us 

with One Day Like This, Muse, Jessie J. Ray 

Davies, Madness, Take That…. Seriously we 

could go on. What a show, what a legacy, 

what a brilliant album. 

Dixie and Gayle’s Real CD Review 

SPECTOR THE SPECIALS 

They’re named after one of the most 

successful and arguably most controversial 

producers of all time, but will they live up to 

their name? Or will they live up to the album 

title and just be another flash in the pan? It’s 

hard to say. 

Spector are without doubt, stylish. They’re all 

suited and booted with a male model for a 

bassist, who looks like the Brandon Flowers 

from the Killers. Plus, they’ve got a lead 

singer with moves like Cocker (Jarvis that is) 

mixed with vocals like Bryan Ferry. In fact this 

kind of sums up their sound too! 

Upset Boulevard, Twenty Nothing and True 

love are achingly close to the synthy rock 

sound of the Killers, tinged with a strong 

hint of Roxy Music and David Bowie. 

Chevy Thunder released earlier this year, is 

pumping, driving and relentless, but grittier 

than the previous tracks as it feels more 

Libertines meets Ramones. It’s certainly dirty 

and American, quite an achievement for 

some clean looking boys from Camden. 

Grey Shirt and Tie, one of their biggest 

singles from last year, in total contrast is as 

polished and electro as an old OMD track 

and this one is a surprising grower. 

“But our favourite song on the 

album is Celestine. It’s gloriously 

upbeat, utterly uplifting and just 

when you think it’s faded out, it 

comes back for a reprise which 

is like seeing the sun rise for the 

second time on a perfect day.” 

All in all, Spector are oddly eclectic, reflective 

and their look is effective. Only you can stop 

them being another super cool band going 

nowhere! 

How does a band like The Specials make 

any money with a whopping eleven 

members? Well, they did a tour in 2011 and 

they milked their biggest single Ghost Town 

in every town they visited! Yes for 6 minutes 

these Two Tone Ska Maestros pumped 

out their hit about unemployment, to the 

rapturous cheers of a crowd reliving their 

misspent youth. 

Other huge crowd pleasers on this double 

album include; Gangsters, their debut 

single from 1979; A Message To You Rudy 

an awesome cover and a real classic; And 

obviously Too Much Too Young - the band’s 

first number one from 1980, which comes 

across so vibrantly you can actually feel the 

crowd bouncing along. 

Singing alongs are also welcomed here! 

In fact some tracks hardly require the 

distinctive vocals of Terry Hall, because 

through time, they have become almost 

football chants. Most notably ‘Where did 

you get that Blank Expression on your face!’ 

is belted out by the crowd. Stereotype, Rat 

Race and Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You 

Think) also get this joyous treatment. 

We particularly loved the wild abandon of 

Monkey Man (an old Toots and The Maytals 

song) contrasted with the blissful sleepiness 

of Friday Night, Saturday Morning. 

To sum up, The Specials have had a massive 

party and if you were there, this will be the 

perfect souvenir. But if you weren’t there and

we really seem to be a city that 

enjoys eating out – it seems like 

every month somewhere new opens, 

which is great, but it’s nice to revisit 

some of the cities gems every now 

and then! i felt like a bit of midweek 

poshness, so hit the Malmaison 

with my friend Becky, and what an 

awesome time we had! starting 

with a cheeky watermelon and 

cucumber cooler in the bar and 

heading through for what turned 

into 3 courses. 

we ate from both the specials and the set menu… i was in a fish 

mood and started with cornish crab and avocado fritters, like 

chicken nuggets, but avocado, and then had cajun swordfish. 

Becky had the specials, smoked salmon, turned red from 

beetroot and then ham hock… all pretty delicious. the best 

was yet to come though. when it comes to cheese i’m a bit of a 

cheddar and crisps man, not Becky, she loves a cheese board! 

what a selection there was… 15 in total to choose from, and i 

can say for a cheese novice like myself, this was a great way to 

try lots of different types… i’m a convert! i’m now living by the 

motto – there’s more to life than Babybel!

Bridge of course, for Judy’s wednesday Quiz night… which then 

turned into shots in the penny till 3am, enough said about that! 

And finally for this month… the X factor is back! saturday nights 

feel normal again… i caught up with Amelia lily (finished 3rd 

place last year, loves a hat… remember her?!) and rather than 

talking about her music, we ended up talking cats, she gave me 

some tips on looking after my holidaying bosses kitten… wear

PROTECTION 

FROM ROGUE 

LETTING AGENTS 

It was interesting to read a report 

earlier this month that shows 

the number of people living in 

privately owned rental properties 

will overtake those living in 

council and local authority 

owned homes as of next year. 

However large parts of the 

industry have not kept pace with 

this growth and as it continues 

to expand both tenants and 

landlords are increasingly at 

risk from fraudulent companies 

operating as letting agents. 

It’s no secret that the private 

rented sector has been one 

of the big success stories to 

emerge from the recession 

due to a shortage of mortgage 

liquidity which is making it 

difficult for many people to get 

on the property ladder. As a 

result, lots of new letting agents 

have appeared on the scene 

over the last couple of years. 

Most offer a valuable service 

and do a good job but there 

are also plenty out there acting 

in their own short-term interests. 

Too many tenants and landlords 

are being short-changed 

by these dodgy, here today 

and gone tomorrow firms so 

something drastic needs to 

happen to offer a decent 

level of protection. 

The aforementioned report was 

produced by the Labour Party 

and is a policy review document 

titled ‘Private Rented Housing’. 

According to this, England’s 

private rented sector consists 

of 3.6 million households and 

from next year it will be the first time 

more people have rented privately, 

than rented a social home, in 50 

years! 

The document looks at how it 

can deliver change and fairness 

in the current economic climate 

to the private rented sector and 

considers how it can put a stop 

to unscrupulous agents that are 

charging tenants and landlords 

unjustifiably high fees. 

As part of this policy review, Labour 

is planning to work with the sector 

to identify ways of improving 

standards in order to create a 

level playing field for responsible 

operators as well as protection for 

tenants and landlords. It also says 

it will consider a code of conduct 

for the industry and look at how 

compliance could be monitored 

and perhaps even introduce a 

regulatory body with enforcement 

powers. This is good news for the 

industry because any steps to 

eradicate unscrupulous agents 

will have a positive effect. 

However in the meantime there 

are some simple precautions that 

tenants and landlords can take to 

help stamp out fraudulent agents 

and protect themselves from 

becoming a victim of these rouge 

operators. 

It’s always important to research a 

business before handing over any 

money and you should only deal 

with responsible firms that act fairly 

and professionally. 

Also don’t be afraid to ask up front 

what fees the letting agent charges

Casa Mia 

My partner and I called into Casa Mia Italian restaurant at 

Millennium square for dinner after work and were pleasantly 

surprised. 

The dinner menu was reasonably priced 

considering the quality and somewhat 

liberal portions served. A moderately 

diverse menu consisting of pasta, 

chicken, meatballs, pizza, pork, beef 

and a small yet appetizing selection of 

seafood choices are represented and 

from the moment you’re seated, the 

entire family should have a relatively easy 

time selecting an appetizer or two in 

commencement of the dining experience. 

After carefully considering and weighing 

all essentials (starting with the wine 

selection) of which I personally find 

critical elements which can either make 

or break a premier dining experience, 

any or all of which may indeed differ 

demonstrably from your culinary criteria, 

I’ve subsequently decided Casa Mia 

provides a very desirable mainstream, 

ethnically themed environment conducive 

to a charmingly quaint night out. 

In summary, whether you are calling in 

after work, having a celebration or dinner 

before hitting the town Casa Mia has to be

When Brooklyn bar asked the City 

Dweller team to drop by one busy 

thursday night to check out their new 

food menu washed down with a fresh 

barrel of Sam adams beer, they didn’t 

have to do much persuading. 

The hip Call Lane joint, whose motto is ‘funk, 

soul and rock n’ roll’ served us up some soul 

food from their New York inspired menu and 

boy did it taste good. The Honey and Rum 

burger (£6.95) which came topped with bacon 

and complimented with lashings of french fries 

was a big hit from the Big Apple and got the 

thumbs up from all that tried it.

City Dweller Magazine have teamed 

up with the guys at welcome to 

Yorkshire to look at some Yorkshire 

days out. Here is one of their 

suggestions with all the makings for a 

wild day out. 

Swaying palm trees, clear blues skies, zebras 

grazing, and monkeys roaming free all 

conjure up images of Kenya or perhaps even 

Madagascar. But there’s no need to jet off 

halfway round the world – just make the short 

hop down the A1 to Doncaster for a wild time 

at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. 

With creatively designed enclosures to rival 

anywhere in Europe – not to mention their 

collection of animals – it’s a must-visit if you 

love animals or just a good day out. The park 

first opened in 2009 and it’s been a roaring 

success. Visitor numbers have rocketed – and 

it’s easy to see why. Easy parking and access 

means the visit starts off right and because 

the flow of people around the park moves in 

different directions, you are rarely queuing to 

get site of the animals, which is great. 

A good tip is arrive early doors so you can plan 

your movements to coincide with the excellent 

animal talks, which are roughly every half an 

hour in different locations. The cafe and loos 

are just as you go in, so it’s a good place base 

while you plan. If you don’t get to all the talks, 

don’t worry as the excellent signage around the 

park tells you some real nuggets of info about 

the species in general as well as detailed info 

about individual animals – right down to their 

name and characteristics. We played guess 

which lion is which! 

Speaking of those majestic beasts, Lion 

Country is made up of three separate themed, 

spacious enclosures and home to several lions 

rescued from a Romanian zoo by dedicated 

park director Cheryl Williams and her team. 

They now very happily live in the vast 10-acre 

enclosure and from what we could see – very 

well as it goes – they couldn’t have looked 

happier. That’s the beauty of the park – you 

get to see the animals from excellent vantage 

points, without the park having to skimp on 

space. That all makes for happy visitors and 

happy animals. 

Another must on a visit is a trip to Leopard 

Heights, which opened in May and is the 

biggest leopard enclosure of its kind in the 

world. It’s spectacular. The Amur Leopard, the 

most endangered carnivore in the world, is 

a beautiful creature and the newly designed 

habitat provides plenty of creative climbing 

for the animals and lower and upper viewing 

platforms mean visitors get an unobstructed 

view, transporting you to their natural habitat 

in the wild.

On our visit, we also came face-to-face with 

a rather magnificent camel. I don’t know his/ 

her name, but it was the epitome of cool and 

really loved the attention – especially from Liv, 

our six-month-old daughter. If you want to get 

the full experience, you have to head through 

the big gates into one of the walk through 

enclosures. Take your pick from Lemur, 

leaping wallabies or for something a little 

more Latin, check out the South America Viva. 

There’s also African plains, Land of the Tiger 

and meerkats to name just some of many 

others that you can witness enjoying their 

spacious homes. If the kids still have some 

energy to burn off, there’s also an impressive 

indoor and outdoor play area. 

Sure, we might not have Africa’s climate, but 

Yorkshire certainly has the animals – and all 

the makings for a wild day out.
