Designing
playgrounds
Claudia: We have been designing playgrounds
for 30 years. Today, we are
actually 230 people. It started with an
idea, with the desire to be creative
and to create interesting spaces for
children. Today we still adhere to this
basic idea which the company founder
Klaus-Peter Gust originally had.
Playgrounds for children have been
expanded to include play areas for
people of all ages, with and without
restrictions. The last 30 years have
allowed us to discover how multifaceted
play is. With our wooden
constructions and sculptures we want
to provide children and adults with
space for personal development and
to try out the infinite facets of play.
This is the standard we hold ourselves
to, and which must be adapted to
tight budgets, tight deadlines and
other problems. Our goal is to create
playgrounds that grow with the needs
of users, spaces that can be changed
and shaped. A high level of safety is of
paramount importance to us.
Combining these two things are
challenges that we face every day.
When you look at a finished
Claudia Gust
playground it’s no longer possible to
see how many heads or hands went
into creating it. The aim of this
brochure is to introduce you to the
people who actively shape the path
which starts out with an initial idea
and culminates in a playable space
through planning, calculating,
designing, building, testing, loading,
assembling and repairing. We also
take a look back at 30 years of playground
history and talk about our
wishes and visions for future
playgrounds.
Review
How the cow got
on the roof
In 1988, the GDR was breathing its last breaths. After
almost 40 years it had been recognised that socialism
also wasn’t able to survive without private initiatives.
Small businesses were promoted. And so, after
several attempts, our two-man business (Klaus-Peter
and Claudia Gust) also obtained a licence for a wooddesigning
trade.
Our company also had to work under planned economic
conditions. The order was to produce handicraft
products and adventure playgrounds made of wood.
But the new course didn’t seem to work any longer.
The GDR went bankrupt.
In 1989, a new adventure began. The planned economy
became the market economy. We had to explore
the needs of the market and develop our products
accordingly. The order from last year had left us two
small reference playgrounds. They consisted of simple
balancing and climbing structures as well as some
animal sculptures made of robinia. Alongside oak,
robinia was incidentally the only wood that could
be used for playground equipment in the GDR, and
it was our ticket to the West Berlin Garden Offices.
With this material we were welcomed with open
arms, since pressure-impregnated play equipment
was very expensive to dispose of back then. Of course,
there was still some scepticism about our abilities and
compliance with standards. Our first customer was the
Berlin-Neukölln parks department. In autumn 1990
they ordered a dragon and a crocodile for Volkspark
Hasenheide.
In 1991, we made another decision that significantly
influenced the company’s development. For the first
time we rented a 12 m² exhibition space at FSB, an
international fair in Köln. Our exhibit was a threeheaded
dragon which filled the whole stand. This is
where we first got in contact with experts from the
playground industry who were interested in selling
our playground equipment. Thanks to their sound
advice as well as the increased demand for ecological
and custom designed playgrounds, our small company
experienced enormous growth.
In 1995 we acquired an abandoned dairy farm. It offered
ideal conditions to accommodate all areas of the
company and to connect the technology we use. Today,
two wooden cows graze on the canteen’s green
roof as a reminder of the building’s former purpose: a
milk collection point. These facilities soon turned out
to be too small as well.
In 2000 additional, disused buildings were added
which adjoined the company premises. We have developed
a little further with each order. We have learned
a lot about the "green industry" and the social tasks
associated with it from our customers. As time has
passed we have become increasingly active on this
front and are committed to the right to play and a
healthy living environment in networks, associations,
committees, trade fairs and congresses.
»
[…] due to the increased
demand for ecological
and individually
designed playgrounds
learned we are a huge
one growth.«
Philosophy
We stand for safety and quality! Quality matters to us.
We unite visual quality, solid craftsmanship, durability,
stability and safety in all of our products. The robinia wood
is the perfect material for our approach. We demonstrate
our competence, commitment and high level performance
not just through appropriate certificates, but with every
new exciting play ground project we can design and build
for our clients.
Philosophy
We are interested in better and free play! We know
that children want to have fun. Different constitutional,
social and psychological conditions are important in order
to guarantee an optimal contribution to the health- and
wellbeing as well as personality development of a child.
Over the last decades we have been collecting know-how
from theory and best practice, that we better understand
child movement, the play instinct, the value of play and
physical and intellectual development. These are constantly
developed and optimised in our play space concepts.
We are the individual and creative original! The individual
design of play equipment requires a high degree of
flexibility and creativity from our staff. We want to preserve
the originality created in the design and colour by taking
some of the traditional shapes, methods and knowledge
into account.
We do business according to fair competition principles!
Our world offers something for everyone. We think this is a
good thing, and are open-minded toward our competitors.
It matters to us, that we operate honestly, competently and
in a client oriented manner at all times. Evidence of this can
be seen in our long-lasting relationships with clients and
our reliability toward them.
We accept ethical responsibility, and advocate for the
rights and values of children and young people. We live,
work and play in a new eco-social environment. In order
to be able to shape it in a proactive manner, we are operating
in a future-oriented, environmental-friendly and
sustainable way. We are certified with the Brandenburg
environmental label, follow the FSC rules for responsible
forest management and support young talents. We have a
strong social awareness and are committed to democracy,
social values and global responsibility.

Two minds
at the top of
SIK-Holz®
In 1988, master wood sculptor Klaus-Peter Gust had the
idea of building play equipment from crooked robinia
wood. He founded SIK-Holz® and grew it from an individual
enterprise to a medium-sized business. Today he
heads up sales and fills the order books with a whole
team of planners, salesmen and designers.
Marc Oelker joined the company as a project manager
in 2001 after completing studies in wood science. The
company's rapid growth up to that point meant that it
urgently needed structures to implement the many play
ideas. Today he is in charge of production. His team of
technologists, logisticians, carpenters, sculptors and production
planners bring to life the many ideas that the
company comes up with and the ideas from elsewhere.
Klaus-Peter Gust
Klaus-Peter Gust (manager)
The writer Victor Hugo once said:
»Nothing is as powerful as an idea
whose time has come«. The idea of
building play equipment from
robinia is now 30 years old. Has it
made its mark on the market?
Marc: Without a doubt. Klaus and Claudia
Gust had the creative idea of building
play equipment and themed playgrounds
from robinia. This idea and
simple means led to what is now a
whole and an important market
segment in the playground equipment
industry, which conventional manufacturers
of playground equipment also
want to profit from and have to create
their own production capacities. Many
notice that market segments have
shifted, that their original product ideas
and concepts are no longer up to date.
Over time, the SIK idea spread beyond
the borders of Germany to Europe. At
this point, our sales partnerships reach
into the Far East and Down Under.
Before SIK-Holz® was founded, there
were only simple toys made of pressureimpregnated
softwood or steel. That was
the case in eastern Germany, but it was
also the case in western Germany.
Natural? Creative? Themed? Not a
chance!
Klaus: Just as we did 30 years ago, we are
still bringing human closeness and
warmth into the eco-social living
environment today with our natural
play area designs. Wood is one of the
first materials that people discovered,
used and designed as they engaged
with their environment. Robinia is in
many ways a wonderful material for
designing children's playground
equipment because it is especially
resistant when used outdoors. Its
irregularities in growth, its exciting
grain, branches and roots give the wood
its unique character and make it particularly
interesting for us as play area
designers. Our 230 employees embrace
this 30-year tradition of custom playground
design. Our craftsmanship
preserves traditional working methods
and brings themed and natural play
worlds into the otherwise monotonously
and functionally designed urban
spaces. Our products look like they were
designed by children. Sometimes it's
fairy tales, another time it's apparently
simple balancing structures that work
like little wonders on children and
adults in our often dehumanised
environment. We counter this isolated
cold with our loving warmth.
A company’s values are in its
history. As managers of SIK-Holz®,
you have cultivated these values
over the past 30 years and communicated
them to your employees,
business partners and customers.
What is the essence of SIK-Holz®
today and what ideas and visions
do you have for the future?
Klaus: SIK-Holzgestaltungs GmbH will
continue to ensure that equality,
justice and participation remain
essential features of urban development.
The use of resources must be
sustainable and responsible, with
innovative ideas and processes. Even
as a medium-sized company, we can
make a major contribution to our
global climate. With our playground
designs we are able to educate and
shape people by giving them the
opportunity to let loose their imagination,
to move around outdoors and
to play together. My motto: Our
customers’ needs are our challenges
– and we love them. My idea: Play
outdoors in custom designed, natural
spaces.
Marc: Now, of course, there is competition
too. At all trade fairs in the
industry there are various companies
offering robinia playground
equipment. The market is highly
competitive. Many companies are
trying to jump on the bandwagon.
The advantages are obvious: very
natural raw materials from the region,
natural processing, creative ideas
paired with traditional craftsmanship,
concepts adapted to the customer's
wishes, high play value, excellent
durability, the highest level of
equipment safety. Not everyone is
able to successfully combine these
separate areas. As pioneers in robinia
together we are as big as all our
competitors together. We know what
matters and have been operating
successfully on the market together
with our employees for 30 years. We
have done a lot of things right, not
everything, but a lot. We can be
proud of what we have achieved.
Advice
Advising operators
and planners of
playgrounds
Germany has always been our largest market. Our consultants
have many years of experience planning children's
playgrounds or a degree in landscape architecture. In
addition, they are certified safety specialists for children's
playgrounds and have relevant knowledge and experience
in handling wooden constructions. They are very flexible
in their approach and adapt to the wishes of our customers
and the conditions of a new eco-social environment.
In close cooperation with our design office, our technical
consultants develop individual solutions for a wide range
of applications. They can fall back on tried and tested
standards for each new task. This pool is an essential
source for new planning. Every new creation contains a
proportion of traditional forms, processes and knowledge.
Custom playground development is a dynamically creative
process based on interrelationships. Each piece is unique.
Playground
in the colloquium
playgrounds in urban areas
A new playground shall be built here!
Advice
Mostly these are places with old, partly
rudimentary playground equipment, or
›unspaces‹ which haven’t been taken
care of for a long time. It can also be a
›small moonscape‹ in a newly built
residential area, which according to the
land use plan is intended as a free
space for children's play and meeting
place for all generations.
Which of this places present the
greatest challenges for you?
Ulrich: »Unspaces or non-places, both new
and old, are always a challenge. It might
also be an existing playground where only
one piece of equipment or area is to be
renewed. If you can spark something that
makes old things attractive again or define
a new place that children, or best of all,
everyone wants to go to, that is the best
confirmation and my personal concern.«
Jens: »Playgrounds in new development
areas without a definite structure, without
design or historical references, are always a
special task. Technically speaking it is more
difficult to plan in detail, but developing a
functional and attractive concept out of
nothing is usually the greater challenge.«
Ulrike: »On one hand it’s places in an
existing building where the distances to
fixed installations, terraces, walls,
boulders, etc. must be observed, perhaps
there are still trees to be preserved too.
And the other is large open spaces without
any structures which one can design play
areas around. As a planner both cause me
to scratch my head.«
Christina: »Every place is unique. Just like
the people, who will (re-)conquer them in
the future. This includes places that are on
a busy road, a wooded area or a slope for
instance. The existing or missing tree
population and the neighbourhood are
also individual. Existing devices must be
integrated and new wishes fulfilled. I see
the challenge in reconciling all prevailing
conditions, wishes, feelings and moods
and creating the best possible design.«
Alida: »It gets tricky when the space is very
small and you still have to create a lot of
play opportunities.«
What basic questions do you ask the
operator of the future playground?
Christina: »During on-site meetings,
questions regarding size, environment,
location and terrain modelling are often
cleared up. Also important is the target
group, which play functions are desired
and which direction the design should
take. And if a subsequent extension
should be possible and which kind of fall
protection is required. Should the terrain
be further modelled or is a new tree
population planned? It is helpful to draw
up a checklist of further aspects, such as
covering an underground car park, which
need to be decided. The question of
budget and installation must of course be
included in case of realistic further
planning.«
Patrick: »Besides the user groups, the play
value, theme and budget I always ask if
there are experiences with vandalism on
site, if they have own ideas or examples
and how we should present our
creations.«
playgrounds in landscape areas
»
Every place is unique.
Just like the people,
who will reconquer them
in the future.
«
Alida: »What the general conditions are:
Playground size, number of children, age
groups, soil conditions, access, the
financial framework. What is important to
the client? Is there already a topic
perhaps? What is the time frame for
completion?«
Valeria: »Usually I listen to the customer
first. Their ideas and desires are the initial
indicators. Then it is about how possible it
is to make these ideas and desires a
reality. The size of the playground, target
groups and budget are further questions.«
Are there generally planning steps
conditions and signs of use, special
features of the site, such as access routes,
refining the idea. Can you use tried and
tested creations? Were there projects with
similar questions, similar topics or only
similar play offerings? If available, it is
coordinated with the actual situation. A
solution can be found by drawing in scale
and perspective. A budget comparison
takes place at the same time. The design is
forwarded to costing. The result is
compared with the planning and an offer
drawing is drawn up.«
Ulrike: »After evaluating the site I sketch a
draft, create a checklist which my
colleague in the office uses to put together
the offer. Usually I convert the design
sketch into a drawing as the offer is being
prepared; the floor plan in Photoshop, the
views and perspectives by hand. Along
with the offer and the drawings, the
customer receives also an explanatory text,
possibly product sheets and sample photos
Do custom solutions always offer
benefits or are there standards which
have proved their worth?
Ulrich: »Always? Not always but more and
more often. Basically almost always. But I
have to say yes to the second part of that
question. Of course, there are standards
that have proven themselves, not least for
this reason they have been selected (not
downgraded) as standard equipment. This
question touches on the essence of our
brand: We want to offer creative, individual
and high-quality playground
concepts. It is important to us to maintain
our level of quality and to provide sound
professional advice. We don't want to sell
at any price. Instead, it is our goal to sell
the right product. We look at the bigger
picture and don’t want to just fill an area
with random bits of equipment.
Due to the material we use, our product is
individually handcrafted. This is expensive
and costs customers more money. In
return, however, they have the great
advantage that we can react flexibly to
wishes and specific requirements. This
may begin with the colour design, the
installation of on-site slides, the replacement
of elements or a changed orientation
in response to local surface sizes, changed
post lengths, or even combinations of
different systems, newly assembled
elements. Occasionally something new has
to be developed for special projects. The
balance is essential. Sometimes it's a little
trick that makes the facility special and can
create an identity for a playground.«
Christina: »Buying an item of clothing is a
similar situation. Sometimes it fits, the
quality is great and you like it right away.
Other times you have to combine
something in a new way and put it
together differently. Places and the people
who use them sometimes also need a fully
custom design and well-adapted layout to
suit everyone, to be exciting and
coherent.«
Public playgrounds vs. playgrounds for
nurseries and schools!
The number of childcare services for
children in nurseries and schools in
Germany has increased over the last 10
years. Outdoor play areas are particularly
important in these facilities. One
could conclude from this that public
playgrounds were scaled back in favour
of supervised playgrounds. Is this trend
also reflected in your work?
Ulrike: »I couldn’t say. Especially as playgrounds
in kindergarten and school are
often funded differently to public playgrounds.
However, public playgrounds do
get knocked down if there are only a few
young families with children living in the
residential area. The better thing to do
would be, to redesign places like these to
be inclusive. Though often there just isn’t
the money for it.«
Christina: »Playgrounds compete with
residential development. They won't
disappear completely. However, a
reduction or relocation is discussed and
sometimes implemented. It is becoming
increasingly common to leave play areas
and playgrounds on school grounds open
even after school hours and at weekends.
I think that’s a sensible idea.«
›mobile construction site‹ for flexible game
Martin: »In some cities, playgrounds are no
longer in use. Some cities or municipalities
sell these areas, some do not. When I talk
to a municipal employee about this
planning direction, I always ask them to
consider the consequences when these
areas are sold. In most cases, however, this
approach has already been decided by the
council. Of the many small playgrounds a
large proportion disappear due to maintenance
reasons arising from cost-cutting
measures. These spaces are combined into
one large, better or well-equipped main
attraction in the neighbourhood. Funding
measures such as the funding for nursery
schools a few years ago or the latest ›Good
School 2020‹ scheme encourage playgrounds
in such facilities to be renewed.
Often it is only due to the fact that is called
for by someone in the facilities who takes
care of it.«
Has the quality of outdoor play areas
offered by these facilities also increased
with the quantitative increase in the
number of childcare facilities?
Jens: »Although the range of services has
been expanded, the areas available for
playground equipment have usually
remained the same, if not even shrunk
due to extensions. In this respect, there is
often only room for the installation of
additional, easily accessible devices if old
devices are removed at the same time.
Unfortunately, the conversion of existing
playground equipment is often neither
sensible nor economically appealing.«
Patrick: »I often feel that extensions are
necessary and desired, but the available
space remains limited.«
Ulrike: »Absolutely! Parents in particular
consider it very important that their
children receive good support at a very
early age. Often the financing is also
supported by a parents' association.«
multi unit ›Snail shell‹ with wide variety of playing possibilities
Martin: »Often it's because there's someone
there who maintains it and calls for it. The
end quality is often due to the personal
strength, attitude and taste of these
people. Usually these are the leaders,
directors and often also funding associations.
If these people or groups of people
are strong and committed, the quality
improves significantly. If they rely solely
on the carrier or operator, the basic
equipment has to do.«
Antje: »Many facilities rely on long-lasting
quality with low maintenance requirements.
The managers of these facilities are
happy to be reassured by the competent
and customer-oriented advice on the
What opportunities do you see for
pioneering play areas? Are there any
model projects you have planned?
Advice
Ulrich: »Playground equipment does not
feature prominently in networking. Mostly
it is a matter of area design and safe road
crossings. There is certainly still a lot of
potential for play to be developed in
urban environments. But city planners
don't like to see their promenades
'disturbed' by play islands that stick out
like a sore thumb. The contrast could have
an invigorating effect. If everything is
straight and geometric, it can seem not
only large but also monotonous. At best,
oases are created that attract everyone
where the purpose-built, effective world
does not dominate for once. But that’s
more of a vision than a reality.«
Christina: »I see this as an opportunity to
perceive and experience places anew, for
all ages. Walking carefully over a
balancing beam, jumping over a few
bollards and making it down the final
straight can bring us all joy and draw our
attention to something new. Children use
every opportunity offered (if they are not
prevented from doing so) to make their
path more interesting and not just to take
the well-trodden paths. In my opinion
encouraging them to do this is a great
idea.«
Jens: »In the inner-city, urban context, I see
hardly any opportunities without
dismantling a significant portion of
existing infrastructure. Creating and
networking green spaces is a fantastic
idea, but the required space is usually not
available. The residential trend is also
currently returning more strongly to the
city – with corresponding pressure on the
housing market and also on the already
sparse availability of inner-city open
spaces. This will certainly not change
fundamentally in the foreseeable future.
Urban development and traffic planning
would clearly be in demand here in order
to create fundamentally more attractive
inner-city recreation areas in the city as a
living space. In out-of-town, rural areas,
such concepts are more likely to be found
in the areas of tourism and local recreation.
The networking of green areas, local
recreation areas etc. is often seen as a
contribution to environmental protection
in the sense of actively encouraging
pedestrian and bike traffic. Hopener
Waldpfad/City of Lohne, for example, has
various play points along a local recreational
trail in the forest of the town of
Lohne. "Play and recreational elements
Ulrike: »Of course the possibility of networking
play points and exciting places for
pioneering play points can only be
installed in protected areas, which must
also be controlled and maintained. For
this reason, inquiries of this kind are few
It is evident that Germany provides the impetus to
Drawings of
the craziest
ideas
Our builders and designers design new play equipment
and playgrounds every day. In addition to design and play
value, the safety of the devices is always a primary concern.
As in sales, tasks can range from clear and simple to complex
and complicated.
The way the equipment is built must be considered as early
as the offer or competition phase, the reason for this is to
produce a great idea and also to ensure that all safety-relevant
requirements are met. Often a sketch is sufficient for
offers and competitions. However, a sketch is not sufficient
for a thorough calculation.
In addition, in most cases there is only a narrow time
window for developing and adapting a new piece of play
equipment or for drawing up a complete playground plan.
The standards of how the objects look have also increased.
Since children and adults from the public are involved
in the planning of playgrounds, the submitted competition
presentations must not only impress with their play
value and quality, but they must also reach the viewer
emotionally.
Approximately every 4th Offer and every 4th competition
eventually becomes an order. Then everything has to be
thought through in depth, agreed on and put down on
paper. Without a carefully planned design and detailed
drawings, our custom designed play equipment cannot be
built to the expected standard.
For this reason, in addition to creativity and knowledge of
engineering, organisational talent is also required in our
drawing office.

The idea of a piece of play equipment still doesn’t take
material form. In principle, a flow production must be
organised. Even though SIK-Holz® doesn’t have any
assembly lines, of course. It is much more of an objectrelated
process in which machines and workstations are
passed through in a fixed sequence according to the required
steps. For us that is the wood yard/cutting, tower
construction or sculpture, for some products this includes
a metalworking shop and finally the colouring process.
These processes must be planned according to working
hours for the respective departments and the purchasing
department orders the necessary parts for the specified
delivery date.
We have a custom manufacture process, so we don’t produce
equipment to stock. For this reason delivery times are
usually 6–8 weeks. Bigger projects take longer to plan. Of
course, our employees try to take special customer wishes
into account. This means constantly coordinating planning
and communicating with customers and suppliers.
These are essentially the processes which come before
production. The post-production processes must also be
organised in advance and always adapted to the agreed
delivery date. This includes shipping and installation.
Since the assembly stage depends on the weather, postponing
is not uncommon. In recent years, it was less the
frost that filled our warehouse than the torrential rain in
summer that repeatedly flooded construction sites.

task requires a great deal of technical
understanding, creativity and organisational
talent. What criteria do our
suppliers have to meet?
Torsten: »The procurement, storage and
provision of all purchases in our company
form a complex unit. This is why there is
close cooperation between the purchasing
manager and the warehouse manager.
This requires careful selection and cooperation
with appropriate suppliers. These
must meet several criteria in order to meet
our standards and our expectations. The
basic prerequisite is an appropriate GS
certification, which guarantees quality,
reliability, adherence to delivery dates
and, last but not least, flexibility. Great
care is also taken to constantly check and
negotiate prices for purchased parts with
our suppliers and to compare prices with
other suppliers. This is the only way to
ensure cost savings. We currently have 16
main suppliers, which are reassessed
annually as part of our quality management
system and approved by the
management. Most of these suppliers have
been partners of our company for many
years and we have an excellent professional
relationship with them.«
and use
preparation
Our playground equipment and sculptures have a very
high degree of vertical integration. SIK-Holz® has three
teams available for preparation. First of all, the bucked
logs are arranged in the log yard according to diameter
and length. There are separate storage areas for wood
with FSC© or PEFC© certification. The log yard team uses
heavy machinery to remove individual logs from the pile
for the specific job. Having good visual judgement is needed
for this task. Can this trunk become a palm tree? Is
that enough to make seat bollards? The available resources
are used conscientiously; what’s left over is collected up
and sold as firewood. Using trailers, the prepared logs are
passed on to the sanding team for each order.
Here, the logs are first debarked with a high-pressure
cleaner, then planed smooth and finally sorted into piles
by job. The third team in the preparation phase is the cutting
team. This is where the real heart of a carpenter beats.
The milled wood is cut to SIK-Holz® standard dimensions
and quality using a band saw, jointer and planer. The
processed timber is glued to boards or placed in cantilever
racks. The next departments in the chain – tower construction,
sculpture and assembly – can then take what they
need from the carts and cantilever racks.

In the tower construction department, the prepared timber
is not only constructed into towers. Ships, volcanoes,
planets, climbable dinosaurs, oversized squid, snails,
chestnuts, acorns and much more have already left the
workshops. Small objects such as playhouses, swings and
seating groups are built here too. Our tower builders are
highly qualified and experienced carpenters and joiners.
They work in four large workshops, each in small
teams. It is a kind of nest production with corresponding
specialisations for different groups of playground equipment.
Large playground elements are usually completely
assembled once, that’s to say that any bridges, nets and
ropes, entrances and exits are all fitted. The complete system
is then dismantled to a transportable size.
It is always impressive to watch how pieces of play
equipment spring up in these halls. Walking through the
workshops, despite the noisy chainsaws, you can feel a
certain peace, concentration and joy in your work. Although
the production drawings specify the basic design of
the devices, the details are based on a wealth of experience
in working to a standard. This skill is taught as part
of regular training courses
.

Creating
playmates
out of wood
sculpture
Day by day sculptures for public spaces are created by the
qualified hands of our wood sculptors. With craftsmanship
and artistic talent they make each piece of wood unique.
Workshop manager Oliver Recknagel and his team are literally
carved from hardwood. Using chainsaws every day
requires a lot of strength and concentration. Conversely,
fine motor skills are important for the detail work. The spatial
sense which the craftsmen have is remarkable.
They practically see the sculpture in the wood, expose it
piece by piece and breathe life into it. Horses and dragons,
giraffes and elephants, crocodiles and seals, but also small
animals, such as caterpillars and snails in 100x magnification,
are among the most popular playmates on our
playgrounds. As it happens, about 400 small and bigger
feathery animals leave the sculptor's workshop every year.
Entire signage systems for cultural and natural areas are
designed here at the customer's request or according to our
own templates.
A good third of the team at SIK-Holz® has completed a
three-year training as a wood sculptor. This training ensures
the high quality of our hand-crafted products.

coloring
A lick of paint
»The colours are actions of the light, [...]« Goethe writes
in his book Theory of Colours. Without colours, something
would remain hidden from our eyes. The character of a
piece of play equipment or a sculpture is expressed in the
structure and colour of the surface. Bringing brightness
and joy to public spaces with colours is a creative process.
This can have a different depths, from a red roof to a colourful
bird. Having a fine touch and attention to detail
is necessary for every step when designing colours for our
products.
Our employees in the colouring department bring both.
The colouring process is carried out in two different halls.
Through a several-stage process, small sculptures and objects
are primed, painted and waxed by Marina Möbius
with her colleagues Swetlana Lemp and Sara Buruguru.
A dextrous hand is required to emphasise the facial expressions
and gestures of the objects with small strokes.
Tommi Gellert and his team turn large, complex systems
into colour. Here you don't just paint with a brush. The
surfaces are also sprayed or several coats are blurred together
to achieve large-scale effects, such as a climbing
forest with coloured birch trunks. Finally, everything is
carefully tied up, packed and made ready for the journey
to the playground.

you feel the colour;
it'll only enhance
its own qualities.
Moving a volcano from Langenlipsdorf to Auvergne in France
is a technical and mechanical challenge. Our assembly teams
are to the task. They are usually entrusted with the construction
of complicated, multi-part systems. Our assembly team
members have many years of experience in handling our
products and know how to solve even the most awkward
situations on poorly organised building sites.
They are able to capably operate any kind of technology
rented for the building site. The weather doesn’t hold them
back either. They work outside as long as the ground isn’t
frozen. Our assembly team regularly take part in external
and internal training courses in order to understand all aspects
of the playground with regard to standards, children's
playing behaviour and the design of the playground equipment.
They are also able to guide hands-on construction
sites when it comes to involving people in the design of their
living environment. Patience and pedagogical skills are also
required here.

Service and administration
Service and administration are two areas that are not directly
related to our products. However, they ensure on a
large scale that all other departments can work smoothly.
The service essentially comprises the areas of building and
facility management and metalworking. Here everything
is repaired and restored in-house, grid tunnel welded
and periscopes are built manufactured as well. Part of the
operational service is also arranging break times.
Accounting is a central part of the administration. This is
where the successes are calculated and the staff organised,
as well as communication with the management. Two
more of our company’s key departments are quality and
information management. Without them, the company
would come to a standstill or sink into chaos. All inquiries
are dealt with competently and in a friendly manner in
Training as a
foundation
By training young people, we enable them to shape their
own lives and those of the community. For 22 years we
have been training young people as skilled workers in
four trades. Every year SIK-Holz® trains carpenters, wood
sculptors, office management staff and technical product
designers. A trainer is responsible for the quality of the
practical training for each trade and works together with
the respective vocational school. 86 young people have
taken their first steps into their professional lives here over
the last 22 years.
Almost every second trainee was taken on. Some are
further qualified in the company as business economists,
master craftsmen or study for bachelor's degree.
Wood sculptors in particular have received many awards
with their diplomas in the past. All these awards are a
testament to the excellent training at SIK-Holz®. The
achievements of the young employees are now reflected
in many wood designs in playgrounds and urban spaces
in Germany and around the world.
During training, the apprentices pass through various departments
in the company and become familiar with the
sale, design or manufacture of playground equipment according
to their level of training. At the end of the training,
each apprentice is also a 100% employee.

Sustainable management means taking responsibility for
the people who work for us, for the resources we use, for
the region we live in and for the market we operate in.
We do this in many different ways. Having social responsibility
for our employees doesn’t just mean paying them
a decent wage on time. The 'Stay healthy' and 'Stay clean'
schemes for instance ensure awareness while also improving
the working atmosphere and conditions.
Our main resource is robinia wood. We are certified according
to the guidelines of FSC© and PEFC©. With these
certificates we are able to prove the entire material flow
and support sustainable forestry. As a rule, we look at the
shortest transport routes when choosing our suppliers.
Social
responsibility
At 13 locations around the world, young people from different
countries built a rainbow-shaped piece of play equipment
in craft camps lasting several weeks under the guidance of
Klaus-Peter Gust. These rainbows are a sign of hope in places
of separation and destruction. Many people who took part are
still in contact today. Some rainbows have found godparents
and have been restored. They are pieces of play equipment
but also bridges that connect us with other people and cultures.
We support many social and cultural projects throughout
Germany by donating gifts in kind and money. We are connected
with the primary school in our community by a long,
close sponsorship scheme for one class each from 3rd to 6th
