Points wise, we finished with 323.5 points, which is amongst the highest
points we have scored over the last 10 years. At this year’s carnival
Mazenod had 10 first places, 13 second places and 11 third places. The
Under 15’s won their age group on the day and the Under 15 and 16
students tied for the Intermediate Cup.
Mazenod’s individual ACC Champions, who all finished first in their
events, were Jared Blatancic (U/16 100m Hurdles), David Handakas
(U/17 100m), Rehan Nazar (Open 3000m and U/16 1500m), Vince
Saina (U/15 Shot Put & Discus), Jonathan Souter (U/15 Triple Jump).
In addition to these individual results, we also had students finish first in
the U/15 4x100m relay (Dylan Masters, Vince Saina, Daniel Lacey and
Joshua Trounce), U/16 4x100m relay (Luke Greco, Jared Blatancic,
James Cachia and Mattehew Arnot) and U/17 4x100m relay (David
Handakas, Jake Little, Ben Castledine and John Paul Malietzis).
Jared Blatancic, competing in the U/16 100m hurdles, became only the
second Mazenod student to break an ACC record when he ran a time of
13.89 seconds and showed himself to be the best hurdler in the
College’s history. The new record is a great reward for all of Jared’s
hard work and his commitment to the athletics team over several years.
To all athletes, congratulations and well done on your efforts. Keep
training hard, keep doing the right things, keep believing you CAN
succeed and look forward to 2010 with great enthusiasm and
anticipation as 2010 promises to be a sensational year for athletics at
Mazenod.
ACC Uniforms
If any students have ACC football jumpers, soccer strips or hockey tops
at home from last year could they please return them to the PE Office as
soon as possible as they are needed for the upcoming season? Without
the return of these jumpers, strips and tops we will be short in some year
levels, meaning some students may miss out on representing the
College, which would be a real pity. This includes any of the plain blue,
yellow, maroon or green jumpers that are used each year for House
Sport’s SS football. If you think you might have a jumper, strip or top
somewhere at home, could you please thoroughly check all your
drawers and wardrobes and return them ASAP if you find one as other
students need them? Could parents also check to see if their son has one
of the abovementioned uniforms?
For the upcoming ACC seasons of football and soccer, students
involved in ACC sport need to remember they are only allowed to wear
plain royal blue or plain black shorts and pain socks (depending on the
sport they play and the year level). Shorts and socks must be plain with
no logos or stripes on them. Students without the correct uniform will
not be allowed to represent the College in ACC sport. Student in need
of plain black or plain royal blue socks can purchase them from the PE
Office for $7 per pair. Students in need of plain royal blue or plain
black football shorts can also purchase them from the PE Office for $15.
Students should also note that bike shorts or ‘Skins’ that are commonly
worn under their shorts should only be worn if they are absolutely
necessary (i.e. due to a medical reason). Students who need to wear
such shorts can only wear them if they are skin coloured. Students are
not allowed to wear black, white or any other coloured bike shorts or
Skins under their shorts. Students will not be allowed the represent the
College if they are not in correct uniform.
Mazenod Vic v Mazenod Junior Football Club
On Wednesday, April 15, our year 9 football team took on Mazenod
Junior Football Club from WA. The WA team plays in a local team
over there and is made up entirely of students who attend Mazenod
College in WA. The conditions on the day were quite blustery but both
teams adjusted well and played out a competitive match. While the final
score favoured our team, the WA team worked hard all day and were
very competitive throughout the match, giving our team no easy
possessions. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the game was the
manner in which both teams played the match with great sportsmanship
and in the spirit of healthy competition. It was terrific to see the two
teams share lunch after the match and it was a great experience for both
teams to be able to get to know each other, even if it was only a brief
meeting over lunch. We don’t underestimate the commitment made by
the students and support staff from Mazenod Junior Football Club in
coming to Victoria and thank them for the game and wish them well for
the season ahead.
I’d also like to thank Mr Piasente and Mr Riley who coached the team
on the day and Fr Michael Twigg for his involvement as an assistant
coach and for his efforts in bringing the two teams together prior to the
match and at the after match function. The team was also supported on
the day by many parents and families of the College and I’d like to
extend my thanks on behalf of the students for the kind support they
received for without such support we could not offer the students the
opportunities we do. I’d also like to thank the Mazenod Old Collegians
Football Club for their willingness to support both the Mazenod Victoria
and Mazenod WA students whereby they provided each student
involved in the game a commemorative cap which they were able to
take home on the day. Hopefully we are able to further strengthen the
link between the College and the Old Collegians Football Club whereby
students looking for a club strongly consider the Old Collegians as it is a
great way for current and past students to stay involved with their mates
as well as being involved with a club that has strong links to the
Mazenod College community.
Without the generous support of the Mazenod Junior Football Club in
WA, the Mazenod College Victoria staff, students and community and
the Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club we could not have offered
the students the opportunity to be involved in the game so I’d like to
thank all those who were involved and supported the game for their
involvement and generous support.
