Term 2 Newsletter No. 10 24 APRIL 2009
Newsletter
For those parents and teachers coming to the College since the Term began I must apologise for
the inconvenience caused due to our current building project. Although it is not a big project, the
multipurpose area attached to the canteen and the construction of a new (but small) uniform
shop, nevertheless the disruption is fairly considerable. For parents and staff this is most evident
in relation to car parking and for our students it is most evident in the longer lines at the canteen
due to the decreased number of windows available for serving them. But I hasten to remind the
students that it is only a temporary suffering on their part and hopefully will lead to a better
situation, particularly for the senior students, in future days. Needless to say nothing runs as
smoothly as was anticipated or hoped for! Walls we thought we could leave standing had to be
pulled down and foundations we thought solid were not quite so. But apart from these minor
hiccups, all is going well.
During the holidays we also took the opportunity to install our two new water tanks to take
advantage of the considerable run-off water (when it rains!!) from our roofs. There is a new
240,000 litre tank situated between our two ovals to irrigate our sporting facilities and a 25,000
litre tank behind the College Chapel to do likewise for our gardens. We are most appreciative to
the Federal Government for the $50,000 grant which went a very long way towards the overall
cost of the project. It is planned that if it works out as well as we expect that we shall in due
course add a second equally large tank to augment water storage for the ovals. This would be
done at our own expense.
May I also take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the Federal Government for our
share of the funds in relation to computers, as outlined in their Education Revolution Policy. We
qualified for 90 new computers in Round 2 of that particular programme and during the holidays
we received delivery of them. Although the Government kindly funded the actual machines
nonetheless there was considerable cost to the College in the building and installation of the
necessary infrastructure required to be able to make full use of the machines. I am grateful to our
computer technical staff and a number of students who undertook a major installation and
reorganization of computers in our classrooms during the holidays. We would now have
approximately 450 desk top machines for student use throughout the College. These are
distributed through specialist computer rooms, science laboratories, technical design rooms,
music rooms, library, classrooms and seminar rooms. In other words, computers are very much
an essential part of all subject faculties and teaching areas.
Now that we are in Term 2 had and I look forward to a less crowded schedule in relation to
extra-curricular activities. We had, of course, the Year 7 camps which were postponed from
Term 1 due to Bushfire dangers, and also the fast approaching Year 10 Outdoor Education
camps and activities. I am grateful to Mr Matt Johnson, our Outdoor Education Director for the
organization of these activities. Always a major undertaking especially in relation to attempting
to ensure the effectiveness and attractiveness of the venues and activities but, above all, the
safety of the students.
God Bless
(Fr.) Pat Moroney O.M.I.

SPORTS NEWS
Senior Sport
On Wednesday afternoon the annual Davie-Egan and Davis-Johnson
Cups were played against Salesian College. The Davie-Egan Cup
soccer game is played in honour of Mr Norm Davie from Mazenod and
Mr Carl Egan from Salesian in recognition of their outstanding
contribution to soccer at both Colleges over some 25 plus years, with
both men still coaching their senior teams. The Davis-Johnson Cup
football match is played in honour of Mr Frank Davis from Salesian and
Mr Matthew Johnson from Mazenod, who were the first students from
each College to play VFL/AFL football, with Mr Davis representing
Melbourne and Mr Johnson Footscray (now the Western Bulldogs). The
cup also recognises the contribution both men made to football at their
Colleges.
In what was a mixed day for the College, Mazenod won the soccer and
regained the Davie-Egan Cup, but Salesian retained the Davis-Johnson
Cup by winning the football. Two Colleges have enjoyed a successful
relationship over many years and the introduction of the two cups in
2000 has only added to the friendly rivalry in sport between the
Colleges which was evident yesterday with both games being played in
terrific spirit. I congratulate all the Mazenod students who participated
in the games and for the way in which they conducted themselves in
both victory and defeat. A special word of thanks go to Mr Montoya for
coaching the soccer team while Mr Davie was away on camp and to Mr
Connolly for his efforts in coaching the footballers.
Davie-Egan Cup (Soccer): Mazenod 6 defeated Salesian 1
Scorers: Adrian Chila 3, Marcus Holmes 1, Louis Greco 1 and Stephen
Harvey 1
Best players: Adrian Chila, Michael Lambardaridis and Dennis
2009 ACC Athletics Report
The 2009 ACC athletics carnival, little did we know, would turn out to
be perhaps the most challenging in the College’s ACC history, but also
the most rewarding. The College finished in third place behind Salesian
College and eventual winner St Bernard’s College.
In the hours prior to the commencement of the carnival we made 21
forced changes due to injury and illness out of the 64 events on the day.
This meant, in 21 events, students were given a last-minute call up and
an opportunity to represent the College and all the students who stepped
in to cover those who pulled out did a tremendous job.
I was as proud of the efforts of our students at this year’s carnival as I
have been in my time as coach as this year’s carnival presented a huge
challenge with the number of students who were forced to withdraw.

Points wise, we finished with 323.5 points, which is amongst the highest
points we have scored over the last 10 years. At this year’s carnival
Mazenod had 10 first places, 13 second places and 11 third places. The
Under 15’s won their age group on the day and the Under 15 and 16
students tied for the Intermediate Cup.
Mazenod’s individual ACC Champions, who all finished first in their
events, were Jared Blatancic (U/16 100m Hurdles), David Handakas
(U/17 100m), Rehan Nazar (Open 3000m and U/16 1500m), Vince
Saina (U/15 Shot Put & Discus), Jonathan Souter (U/15 Triple Jump).
In addition to these individual results, we also had students finish first in
the U/15 4x100m relay (Dylan Masters, Vince Saina, Daniel Lacey and
Joshua Trounce), U/16 4x100m relay (Luke Greco, Jared Blatancic,
James Cachia and Mattehew Arnot) and U/17 4x100m relay (David
Handakas, Jake Little, Ben Castledine and John Paul Malietzis).
Jared Blatancic, competing in the U/16 100m hurdles, became only the
second Mazenod student to break an ACC record when he ran a time of
13.89 seconds and showed himself to be the best hurdler in the
College’s history. The new record is a great reward for all of Jared’s
hard work and his commitment to the athletics team over several years.
To all athletes, congratulations and well done on your efforts. Keep
training hard, keep doing the right things, keep believing you CAN
succeed and look forward to 2010 with great enthusiasm and
anticipation as 2010 promises to be a sensational year for athletics at
Mazenod.
ACC Uniforms
If any students have ACC football jumpers, soccer strips or hockey tops
at home from last year could they please return them to the PE Office as
soon as possible as they are needed for the upcoming season? Without
the return of these jumpers, strips and tops we will be short in some year
levels, meaning some students may miss out on representing the
College, which would be a real pity. This includes any of the plain blue,
yellow, maroon or green jumpers that are used each year for House
Sport’s SS football. If you think you might have a jumper, strip or top
somewhere at home, could you please thoroughly check all your
drawers and wardrobes and return them ASAP if you find one as other
students need them? Could parents also check to see if their son has one
of the abovementioned uniforms?
For the upcoming ACC seasons of football and soccer, students
involved in ACC sport need to remember they are only allowed to wear
plain royal blue or plain black shorts and pain socks (depending on the
sport they play and the year level). Shorts and socks must be plain with
no logos or stripes on them. Students without the correct uniform will
not be allowed to represent the College in ACC sport. Student in need
of plain black or plain royal blue socks can purchase them from the PE
Office for $7 per pair. Students in need of plain royal blue or plain
black football shorts can also purchase them from the PE Office for $15.
Students should also note that bike shorts or ‘Skins’ that are commonly
worn under their shorts should only be worn if they are absolutely
necessary (i.e. due to a medical reason). Students who need to wear
such shorts can only wear them if they are skin coloured. Students are
not allowed to wear black, white or any other coloured bike shorts or
Skins under their shorts. Students will not be allowed the represent the
College if they are not in correct uniform.
Mazenod Vic v Mazenod Junior Football Club
On Wednesday, April 15, our year 9 football team took on Mazenod
Junior Football Club from WA. The WA team plays in a local team
over there and is made up entirely of students who attend Mazenod
College in WA. The conditions on the day were quite blustery but both
teams adjusted well and played out a competitive match. While the final
score favoured our team, the WA team worked hard all day and were
very competitive throughout the match, giving our team no easy
possessions. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the game was the
manner in which both teams played the match with great sportsmanship
and in the spirit of healthy competition. It was terrific to see the two
teams share lunch after the match and it was a great experience for both
teams to be able to get to know each other, even if it was only a brief
meeting over lunch. We don’t underestimate the commitment made by
the students and support staff from Mazenod Junior Football Club in
coming to Victoria and thank them for the game and wish them well for
the season ahead.
I’d also like to thank Mr Piasente and Mr Riley who coached the team
on the day and Fr Michael Twigg for his involvement as an assistant
coach and for his efforts in bringing the two teams together prior to the
match and at the after match function. The team was also supported on
the day by many parents and families of the College and I’d like to
extend my thanks on behalf of the students for the kind support they
received for without such support we could not offer the students the
opportunities we do. I’d also like to thank the Mazenod Old Collegians
Football Club for their willingness to support both the Mazenod Victoria
and Mazenod WA students whereby they provided each student
involved in the game a commemorative cap which they were able to
take home on the day. Hopefully we are able to further strengthen the
link between the College and the Old Collegians Football Club whereby
students looking for a club strongly consider the Old Collegians as it is a
great way for current and past students to stay involved with their mates
as well as being involved with a club that has strong links to the
Mazenod College community.
Without the generous support of the Mazenod Junior Football Club in
WA, the Mazenod College Victoria staff, students and community and
the Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club we could not have offered
the students the opportunity to be involved in the game so I’d like to
thank all those who were involved and supported the game for their
involvement and generous support.
