ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME
AND PERCEIVED HUMAN IMMUNE VIRUS
INFECTION IN NIGERIAN GERONTOLOGICAL
SEXOLOGY
Odor K.
University of Ibadan, Dept. of Health Promotion, Ibadan,
Nigeria
Purpose: The use of condom is unknown, therefore this study
examined the condom use and perceived HIV/AIDS infection
among the geriatrics in Nigeria.
Relevance: As HIV/AIDS continues to pose a public health
challenge globally, the pandemic is without boarders. It
affects every age group including geriatrics. There is limited
Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) intervention
for the elderly persons. However, little attention is paid to
this population in mitigating HIV/AIDS pandemic. Despite
having several Reproductive Health (RH) challenges including
engagement in risky sexual activities which increases
HIV/AIDS infection.
Participants: 400 geriatric persons or elderly people in
Southwest, Nigeria.
Methods: The study was cross-sectional in design. A multistage
random sampling procedure was used to select 400
geriatrics in Southwest, Nigeria. A pre-tested questionnaire,
developed using information obtained from 10 Focus Group
Discussion (FGD), was used to collect information from
respondents.
Analysis: The FGD data were analyzed thematically, while
the questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive and
chi-square statistics.
Results: Respondents mean age was 71.8 years. Slightly
more than half (50.5%) were males. Twenty-five percent of
the participants had extra-marital sex since they attained the
geriatric age. However, among this subgroup that had extramarital
sex, only few (6.8%) used a condom. There was
no significant difference between gender and condom-use,
hence more males (5.3%) than females (1.5%) used condom
during the last extramarital sex (p < 0.05). The low level of
condom use was attributed to the view that condom is not
worthwhile (34.5%) and the opinion (50.0%) condom was
not designed for the geriatrics. Moreover, there is probability
assumption among the FGD participants that sex at
geriatric age could not lead to pregnancy and the assertion
that condom is relatively new technology that never existed
during their time. On the other hand, majority (60.3%) posited
that instead patronizing traditional healers and few (10.3%)
use of herbs/concussion could prevent HIV/AIDS among the
geriatrics. Similarly, overwhelming majority (89.3%) agreed
they did nothing to avoid infection or pregnancy during sex;
while very few (5.8%) had confidence in herbal medicine. The
FGD discussants across both sexes did not believe condom
was important during the last sexual intercourse because in
their view “condom is not like flesh and it may cause injury
when it is used during sex at old age”. Furthermore, they
unanimously opined that “sperm is life it could be wrong to
be deposited in a rubber sheath and later be thrown away”.
They concluded that condom was made for younger generation
and not for geriatrics, hence none use was due to
the strong confidence reposed on traditional herbs, which
was perceived to be efficaciously protective against HIV and
unwanted pregnancy.
Conclusions: Engagement in risky activities among geriatric
people is a significant public health challenge and the use of
contraceptives is misconstrued probably due to knowledge
gap.
Implications: However, without urgent measures to enable
them protect themselves, development efforts will be in jeopardy.
Investing in geriatric Sexual and Reproductive Health
is the most cost-effective interventions in the achievement
of both International Conference on Population and development
(ICPD) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
