International University of Health and Welfare, Physical
Therapy, Odawara-City, Japan, 2IUHW Atami Hospital,
Department of Rehabilitation, Atami-City, Japan
Purpose: It is necessary to pass National Physical Therapy
Examination to work as a specialist in the health sciences
in Japan. Student’s evaluation of learning results of various
information after it had entered a school was done. The purpose
of this research is to clarify which factor relates to the
National Physical Therapy Examination score (NPTE).
Relevance: This study will make an important reference
information on predicting factors related to licence examination.
Participants: The subjects in this study were 48 students of
the physical therapist graduating class of 2009.
Methods: To clarify what influence (1) trial examination
(12 time average), (2) graduation examination (five time
average), (3) GPA (basic GPA, professional GPA), (4) oral
examination T skill A (test and measurement practical skill
test: the second grader) and (5) skill B (comprehensive practical
test in physical therapy: the third grader)), and (6) practice
results (evaluation practice GPA, and clinical practice GPA)
give to NPTE score, it was assumed to be an induced 16 variables
from (1) to (6) and a heavy regression analysis by the
stepwise procedure was done.
Analysis: The multiple regression analysis was used. All
statistics analyses used and executed PASW statistics 18
(SPSS, Japan).
Results: The variable selected by the stepwise procedure was
graduation exam (five time average)(0.552 and partial regression
coefficient = p < 0.01), and knowledge GPA in evaluation
practice GPA (partial regression coefficient = −0.027 and
p < 0.01) (R2 = 0.635, F(2,44) = 38.236, p < 0.01).
Multiple regression equation
Y = 0.552X1 − 0.027X2 + 0.411
X1: graduation exam (five time average) and X2: knowledge
GPA in evaluation practice GPA.
Conclusions: Two (five time average of graduation examination
and knowledge GPA (in evaluation practice) most closely
relating became clear. In the evaluation practice, an important
factor the level of the acquisition of the knowledge of the
student whom the leader evaluated became clear.
Implications: The factor that influenced the National Physical
Therapy Examination scores was average of graduation
examination and knowledge level in evaluation practice.
Therapy Examination scores; Related factor
EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
SELF-ESTIMATED DISABILITY, SYMPTOMS,
ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION IN A SAMPLE OF
PATIENTS WITH DIZZINESS
Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht,
Netherlands, 3University Hospital Zurich, Interdisciplinary
Center for Vertigo & Balance Disorders, Departments of
ENT, Neurology & Psychiatry, Zurich, Switzerland
Purpose: To explore the extent of self-perceived disability
and its relationship to socio-demographical variables, diagnostic
groups, illness duration, symptom characteristics, and
emotional distress in patients with dizziness. To explore the
frequency of abnormal anxiety and depression.
Relevance: 29.5% of the German adult population suffer
dizziness and vertigo at least once in a lifetime. Subjects
with severe dizziness impact public health care costs among
other things due to a high percentage requiring medical services.
Physiotherapy is one important treatment approach and
offered either individually or as part of a multi-professional
treatment program. According to previous studies patients
with severe and numerous physical and psychiatric symptoms
were the most likely to remain symptomatic. Fear of
symptoms and the avoidance of movements triggering these
symptoms are two factors contributing to chronicity and
physiotherapists have to deal with it. Increased knowledge
of factors influencing the level of disability and the course of
disease will help determine appropriate kinds of assessment
and effective treatment strategies.
Participants: Patients who suffered for at least one month
from vertigo, dizziness or unsteadiness associated with a
vestibular disorder were included in the study. The ethics
committee of the Canton of Zurich approved the survey.
Methods: Participants rated their extent of disability as mild,
moderate or severe. They filled out several questionnaires:
the Dizziness Handicap Inventory-German version (DHI-G),
the Vertigo Symptom Scale (VSS), and the Hospital Anxiety
Depression Scale (HADS).
