WPT2011, Research Report Abstracts eS1295 Relevance: There is a discussion whether physical therapy (PT) interventions do have significant effects on physical condition, daily activities, participation and quality of life of nursing home residents or that PT is only effective in early rehabilitation stages and has no effects in secondary or tertiary prevention. Participants: Studies that focus on elderly nursing home residents or frail elderly. Inclusion: studies on patients with one or more chronic illnesses such as, COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, pressure ulcers, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, dementia, depression and CVA, or studies on frail elderly. Results: 1146 women and 98 men, mean age resp. 44.0 and 53.7 yrs; most of them being Moroccan and Turkish; 59.8–34.7% having no school education at all; 59.2–69.5% suffering from chronic diseases. Stamina condition increased with time (Wilks’ Lambda, F = 42,99; p = 0.000). Quality of Life (EuroQol tariff score) was higher at T1 en T2 than at T0 (paired t-test, p = 0.000 en p = 0.000), and increased also with time (Wilks’ Lambda, F = 19,12; p = 0.000). Pain decreased, experienced health was better. Walking or sporting weekly increased from T0 to T2 with 31.3%. The percentage with a monthly of 1–3 GP consults decreased from 55.8% (T0) to 42.8% (T2) (Wilcoxon; p = 0.000). Patients experienced that exercising positively affected their functioning and mood. This is the first programme that clearly showed good results in this patient group. Weakness: waiting-list RCT was impossible because of no-show of patients. Conclusions: All outcome measures showed 10–20% better results at T1, and were maintained 3–6 months later. Men need another approach than women and experienced different kinds of problems. Further work could focus on other immigrant groups and longer follow-up. Implications: Results point at the importance of tailor-made programmes and information retrieval from participants themselves. This has implications for PT education and health policy, and is of interest for an internationally diverse audience. Both intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors play a role in the development of PFP. Patellofemoral bracing can be used as a preventative method in subjects undergoing strenuous training. Relevance: Individuals with intrinsic risk factors for PFP could be identified to provide them with patellofemoral braces as preventative method. Participants: 169 male officer cadets volunteered for the study. Methods: Peak torque of the knee extensor and flexors, the onset of the VMO and VL, the joint position sense (JPS) of the knee, the range of motion and anthropometrical characteristics were measured. A military physical fitness test (MPFT) was assessed prior to the start of their basic military training (BMT). Forty-three subjects were randomly assigned to the intervention group wearing patellofemoral braces during the BMT. Analysis: Variables on a continuous scale were compared between the braced and control groups before the BMT with independent samples t-tests, after the normality and homogeneity of variance was checked with the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test and Levene’s test, respectively. χ 2 statistics (and Fisher exact tests where appropriate) were used to compare nominal data between the two groups. A stepwise binary logistic regression was performed in order to find out which of the risk factors could significantly predict the development of PFP. For all tests statistical significance was accepted at the 5% level. Results: After BMT less recruits in the brace group developed PFP compared to the control subjects (16.3% versus 33.7%; p = 0.042). A delayed onset of the VMO-VL, poor JPS, lower peak torque of the knee extensors and a low score on the MPFT were predictive variables in the development of PFP. Conclusions: The incidence of PFP in predisposed individuals could be downsized using patellofemoral bracing if intrinsic risk factors are identified. Implications: Physical intrinsic risk factors predict the development of PFP during strenuous training sessions. The use
