The Story of the real
Gray Cat & Flounder:
Our story is inspired by the life of Bernadette
Gabrielle Callery (aka, the Gray Cat), a librarian at
the Carnegie Museum of Natural History who was
a freshman in college when her close friend set her
up on a blind date with Joseph Newcomer (aka, the
Flounder) claiming “they were meant to be together”.
The two started talking and for the next 46 years —
they never stopped.
Both the couple’s limitless imagination and their
quirky sense of humor were well known to friends.
Together, they even co-authored a cookbook that
became a proudly featured premium during public
radio fundraisers.

But their crowning achievement was The Gray Cat and
the Flounder... a monumental cartoon series of almost
4000 images that chronicled their lives together.
A lifelong lover of the songs of Pittsburgh songwriter
Stephen Foster, Bernadette asked her husband Joe to
sing Beautiful Dreamer with her on her last day. She
died of ovarian cancer on Friday, July 27, 2012.
Longtime patrons of PNME... the two never missed a
show. The night of Bernadette’s passing, Joe came to
the Theatre of Music with an idea — to commission a
new work celebrating the life of Bernadette Gabrielle
Callery and reaching out to those affected by this
tragic illness.

Edinburgh, Scotland hosts the world’s largest arts
gathering — a high-octane artistic infusion one cannot
experience anywhere else! In 2008, PNME performed
there for the first time and we were nominated for a
“Total Theatre Award” — an astonishing achievement as
there were nearly 4,000 simultaneous performances in
the same city!
In August 2019, we are returning with our beloved
production of “The Gray Cat and the Flounder”, the story
of two Pittsburghers with limitless imaginations and huge
hearts. Help bring our “burghs” together!
