I’m not prepared to compromise.<br />
Beta themselves offer a €375 kit but<br />
apparently it doesn’t really address the<br />
problem. There’s another insert kit at<br />
€800 or a Sachs fork swap option at<br />
€1200. But I won’t be doing any of that<br />
as I’ve just brought a 47mm Showa<br />
fork off a Honda CRF that a bloke in<br />
France has put together with all the<br />
spacers and disc carriers you need.<br />
Well almost everything you need. What<br />
the kit lacks is a KTM bottom fork yoke.<br />
Once I’ve got my grubby mitts on one<br />
of these all I need to do is press out the<br />
Honda steering stem and press in the<br />
Beta one and I have Japanese quality<br />
suspension for €500, which sounds like<br />
a bargain. Admittedly it’s a bit of faffing<br />
about but the Betas are very reasonably<br />
priced and I’m hoping that at the end<br />
I’ll have my dream bike. Of course out<br />
there in readerland you know that<br />
perfect bikes are like unicorns – there’s<br />
no pulling the wool over your eyes. So I<br />
suppose the question is – how close to<br />
my dream bike will it be and how much<br />
work is it going to take to get it there?<br />
