AUTHENTIC
SWISS DESIGN
& CRAFTSMANSHIP
The Time Machine Collection,
conceived, designed and
assembled by Florian
Schlumpf and his team in
their atelier in the small Swiss
mountain village of Trimmis,
is a collection of kinetic art
compositions that combine
contemporary design with the
authentic traditions of Swiss
timekeeping.
Each composition celebrates
the mechanical precision
and sensory pleasure of a
traditional clock in a purely
artistic manner. With the
skeletonized appearance
exposing the inner workings
of the clock mechanism and
the gentle, rhythmic sound of
the pendulum and the quietly
shifting gears, each kinetic
composition will transform a
space both visually and audibly.
Florian, with degrees in
mechanical engineering and
sculpture, continues a legacy
of invention and creativity
that began 130 years ago with
his great-grandfather, Johann
Melchior Schlumpf, who
used his skills in carpentry,
hydraulics and electricity
to invent and manufacture
a variety of innovative
mechanical devices in his
workshop in the small Swiss
village of Steinhausen.
Inspired by the craftsmanship
and ingenuity of his greatgrandfather,
Florian has now
completely re-imagined the
conventional clock, introducing
a number of cutting-edge
mechanical innovations, while
transforming the mechanical
function, movement and sounds
of a clock into a complete
aesthetic artistic experience.
From the statuesque freestanding
TM1, TM2 and
TM3 to the large and visually
stunning wall-mounted TM4
and TM5, each Time Machine
will make a dramatic statement
in any setting.
Exploring the dimension of time in
Released from the burden of
BASELWORLD
2018
Schlumpf TM5 and TM3 were shown at
the booth of AHCI "Académie Horlogère
des Créateurs Indépendants" at Baselworld
2018.
Throughout the exhibition, the Schlumpf
Time Machines attracted a tremendous
number of visitors and a high level of
interest. Of particular interest were the
technical breakthroughs embodied in
the TM5, notably the Schlumpf Orbital
Drive. Many visitors wanted to know
more about this remarkable innovation.
The CEO of a major watch brand, arrested
by the impressive Time Machine exhibit,
bowed symbolically to Florian Schlumpf,
a gesture of respect and esteem for
the innovative design and engineering
incorporated by Florian Schlumpf in his
Time Machines.
For the upcoming season, two finishes of
the TM5 are offered: "Black Gold Edition"
and "Black Chrome Edition". Further
finishes can be delivered upon request.
The same finishes are also available for the
TM3 and TM4 2019 collections.
AHCI, the horological academy of
independent watch and clock-makers,
AX BÜSSER SPEAKS
MB&F’S BUSINESS MODEL, AND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LIVE LIFE ON THE EDGE
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY DARYL LEE AND PUBLISHED ON ROBB REPORT SINGAPORE ON FEBRUARY 2, 2017
It’s safe to say that the past decade has been
rather eventful for Maximilan Busser, the
driving force behind famously left-of-centre,
anti-establishment watchmaker MB&F.
His story is known to most by now. A
young watch industry executive leaves a
resurgent big brand (Jaeger Le-Coultre) to
join a small brand (Harry Winston) on the
verge of bankruptcy. In just under a decade,
said maverick completely turns it around
financially and stuns industry watchers with
the Opus series of watches.
He then proceeds to stun the industry again,
this time by quitting the now-successful
watchmaker/jeweller, to head up his
own independent watchmaker, peddling
exclusively avantgarde Opus-esque pieces.
The protagonist in this story would christen
his brand MB&F, an acronym for Max
Busser & Friends, a brand that recently
celebrated its 10th anniversary. But even
when asked if he thinks MB&F would live
to see its tenth birthday, Busser pauses, looks
slightly bemused and says, “I don’t think
I’ve ever really thought about that."
“When I started MB&F, I was actually
prepared to fail. I was not looking forward to
it, and I would have gone down battling. The
reason why I created MB&F was pride – if I
didn’t, I would hate myself."
His love for the plucky independent watchmaker
is pretty clear, as it’s the backbone of
his Opus project at Harry Winston. “Whether
it’s Kari Voutilainen or Felix Baumgartner,
they are all artisans who need to express
themselves. They didn’t start out only to
make money, and I love that… rather than
guys who head multinational companies
whose main goal is to increase profits every
year. That’s not very interesting."
able to afford one of his own products, and
in 2015 – what he called “a great year" for
MB&F – its profit was just 1.8 per cent of its
revenue.
“It’s a terrible business model – if I showed
it to MBA students, they’d be hitting their
heads against a wall. It doesn’t make any
sense… but I don’t care, I’m happy," he says.
By his own admission, he “is sure of
nothing" when he decides to debut a new
piece, openly sharing that in its short history,
MB&F nearly went bankrupt four times. And
he isn’t ruling out the possibility of a fifth or
sixth.
“Bankruptcy is a big part of my life," he says
with a wry smile.
It’s also interesting to note that Busser has
never received an offer of a buyout from
a big conglomerate to buy out MB&F. “In
some ways, it’s bad for my ego. I never
received a big cheque from someone saying
‘We want to buy MB&F’, but I totally
understand, because we scare the hell out of
any institutional investor. They don’t want
a guy like me in a big company making all
these crazy pieces. We’re taking risks and a
big company takes risk out of the equation.
For us, the only equation is risk, so we’re
way too dangerous for a big entity," he says.
On the topic of risk, Busser reveals he has
six new movements in the offing, ostensibly
destined for a slew of all-new pieces, and is
working on a second brand, with products at
a far lower price point than what is usual for
MB&F.
He says, “For the latter, that’s going to be
challenging, because the lower end of the
market is something I don’t know very much
about. I wanted to create something cool
and great at that price point. It’s enormously
dangerous for me, but it’s fun."
Clearly, money isn’t a key concern for
Busser. In his 11 years of running MB&F, he
reveals he’s still earning half of what he did
at Harry Winston, laughs about not being
left:
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT", MB&F + L’EPÉE 1839
right:
"STARFLEET MACHINE", MB&F + L’EPÉE 1839
To the casual observer, it might seem that
Busser is simply doing what he likes,
everyone else be damned. However, despite
all the talk of fun and happiness, one can’t
help but wonder if the man is far more
shrewd than he has people believing.
MAXIMILIAN BÜSSER -
A MARKETER REMEMBERS HIS
PAST AS A CREATOR
production numbers. It’s plain to see he
can ill afford to have production delays,
of the sort exemplified by the notoriously
troubled seven-year gestation period of
the Harry Winston Opus 3.
Maximilian Büsser was born in 1967 in Milan, the son of a Swiss Nestlé
Manager and an Indian mother. At the age of four, the family moved to
Switzerland. Since they lived in the countryside and Maximilian was an
only child, he had to entertain himself, which was probably one of the
sources for his irrepressible creative urge. His dream was to become a
car designer. When the European campus of the Pasadena Art Center
Then there’s the small issue of tanking
sales numbers in luxury watch retail,
something Busser is trying to sidestep by
“intensely limiting" his production so his
retail partners aren’t holding on to too
much hard-to-shift inventory.
College of Design opened up close to their home, he dreamed of becoming
a student there. However, the money was tight, so Maximilian
became an engineer in micro-technology at EPFL, and in the coming
years became addicted to watchmaking.
Since then, Maximilian’s life has been connected to watches. He
After all, this is the same person who
turned around a couple of struggling
business concerns including his own.
"MB&F has parked our car by
the side of the road and gone into
the jungle with a machete. There
might be a big tree or there’s a
brook we have to cross, but we
don’t know where we’re going.
That’s the beauty of it all."
When MB&F was starting out, it had the
hopes and big dreams of its founder, but
precious little else.
Even today, out of “survival mode", as
Busser puts it, MB&F is still an extremely
small company with even smaller
“We’ve sacrificed revenue to ensure the
sell-out was quick," he says, “This lower
production run also has the happy effect
of increasing scarcity.
Along with that, Busser also isn’t afraid
of discontinuing successful products, such
as the LM1. These are deliberate moves
aimed at driving up MB&F’s value in the
secondary market, something he says,
doesn’t factor into most brand’s plans.
Busser, though is sticking to his guns,
“If our secondary market is strong, we’re
good for the next 10 years."
But when asked where he sees MB&F
then, he draws a bit of a blank. “Product-wise,
we’ve got a pretty clear idea,
but the man I’ll be then, I don’t know.
Maybe I’ll want to go to a desert island
and live off catching lobsters by the sea,"
he says.
And that’s a great reflection of what
MB&F is. Like its founder, there’s a
certain unpredictability about it, unafraid
of taking paths less travelled.
Perhaps Busser says it best when he
likens the watch industry to motorists
on a highway, with everyone travelling
in different vehicles, but in the same direction.
MB&F, though, “has parked our
car by the side of the road and gone into
the jungle with a machete. There might
be a big tree or there’s a brook we have
to cross, but we don’t know where we’re
going. That’s the beauty of it all."
"DESTINATION MOON"
MB&F + L’EPÉE 1839
advanced quickly at JLC and Harry Winston. He became a successful
businessman and marketer. But the dream of being a creator had
not yet been realized. It was time for a courageous decision. He left
Harry Winston and created MB&F, a fundamentally new approach to
watchmaking and marketing. The secret to MB&F’s success was its
independence from the big brands, its boundless creativity and a pool
of unknown but skilled creators who shared the same principles and
values.
Taking the road less traveled was tough. However, Maximilian’s vision
and passion made the impossible become possible. The stage for
showcasing his MB&F watches and the products of other selected
independent artisans became the three M.A.D. Galleries in Geneva,
Taipeh and Dubai. These are incomparable platforms for small artisans
like Schlumpf to present unique products to an erudite audience that
is looking for innovative, exclusive and fascinating horological and
mechanical devices. Maximilian has realized a remarkable vision and
we are proud to be part of it.
A high ranking visitor at Baselworld 2018 said to me: "I see the same
stuff everywhere, but if you are looking for true innovation, visit
Schlumpf or the guys at M.A.D. Gallery". There is no better compliment.
It started out as a crazy idea in
2011. Today the M.A.D.Gallery
is on one of the most interesting
streets in the heart of Geneva,
just a few steps away from our
workshops: on rue Verdaine, you
won’t find the usual, standardised,
megabrand stores - only carefullycurated
boutiques and galleries
with distinctive, hard-to-find
selections inside.
As the name implies, we didn’t
want this to be a boutique, we
wanted a Gallery – a creative
platform to host not just our own
Horological Machines but also
all sorts of other Machines from
around the world, by creators
whom we admire. Many of
these creators have yet to be
discovered… I think they’ll amaze
and amuse you in many different
ways.
The M.A.D.Gallery is really an
extension of the MB&F concept:
The creators we showcase are a
new set of Friends. Their creations
transcend a practical purpose, just
like us: our MB&F Machines are
timepieces of course but, more than
that, we think of them as threedimensional
kinetic sculptures.
Thanks to the M.A.D.Gallery
we’re meeting like-minded artists
operating in parallel worlds; people
who think like us and share our
passion for creating kinetic art.
It’s a two-way street with lots of
exchange involved, creating a very
stimulating creative environment
and – just as important – it’s lots
of fun.
The MB&F M.A.D.Gallery is a
captivating universe of kinetic
art where Horological Machines
and Mechanical Art Devices reign
supreme.
The first M.A.D.Gallery opened in
2011 in Geneva on Rue Verdaine, a
stone’s throw from MB&F’s offices
and atelier in the heart of the city’s
old town. A second M.A.D.Gallery
opened in Taipei in 2014 and a
third one in Dubai in January 2016.
Inside the galleries, not only will
you find the complete range of
MB&F Horological Machines and
Legacy Machines, but you’ll also
have the pleasure of discovering
carefully-curated pieces – or, as we
like to call them, Mechanical Art
Devices – from around the world,
each one making your heart beat a
little bit faster.
one of our loyal customers, supporter and friend. Thomas
was one of the first and most enthusiastic collectors of
Florian Schlumpf‘s Time Machines.
As a successful entrepreneur and owner of businesses
around the world, Thomas immediately saw the ingenuity
of the Time Machines. He liked the products and
the concept as well as the creator and artisan Florian
Schlumpf. Thomas decided to buy several Time Machines
to start a "Kinetic Art" business on the premises of his
company "ASCOSWISS AG".
Now, Thomas has the entire collection of Schlumpf
Time Machines, which can be seen and purchased in his
beautiful showroom in Romanshorn.
Romanshorn is located where the borders of Switzerland,
Germany and Austria meet. It is perfectly located on Lake
TM5
CLASSIC
COLLECTION
Q UEEN!
This TM5 was ordered in its
purest form, in pure silver.
It integrates perfectly into
the color and art scheme of
the entrance of a doctor‘s office
in Geneva Switzerland.
It was installed in April
2018.
The TM5 is a perpetual kinetic art
composition that transcends time
by uniting contemporary design
with the authentic traditions of
Swiss timekeeping.
The rhythmic oscillation of the pendulum,
exposed components of the skeletonized clock
mechanism, and the sheer size of the piece
measuring 1.2 x 1.2 meters converge to create a
work of art with a powerful presence: its intricate
design and constant motion deliver adroit,
ever-changing artistry as the elegant wheels
turn in time to the swings of the pendulum.
Complementing this hypnotic sway is the
steady movement of the oversized wheel and
anchor beam of Schlumpf’s patent-pending
Orbital Drive system. Choose to have the
TM5 display minutes, hours and day of the
week with magnetically positioned pointers.
Or, move beyond precision by completely
removing any indication of time to invoke
timeless admiration, thereby revealing the TM5
in its purest form.
While the modern architecture of the piece
immediately draws the observer in by creating
a mechanical and restlessly changing image,
soothing acoustics of endless ticks and tocks
enhance the connection with time.
The isochronal sounds of the clock are the
focus as the balance of the complex machine is
otherwise virtually silent thanks to an almost
noiseless motor periodically winding the
springs that drive the machine and an escapement
using spring-like anchor pallets, which
produce smooth, virtually inaudible transitions.
The TM5 captures the true beauty of time,
while simultaneously remaining a marvellous,
kinetic work of art that enlivens any space from
a boardroom to formal foyer.
Thanks to its central structure made of highstrength
aluminium, this animated work of art
can be displayed on a wall with or without the
bold frame enclosing the clock mechanism.
TM5 is available as "Black Gold Edition",
"Black Chrome Edition" and "Standard
Edition". Frame and wheels are always black,
while the pendulum has a special design (mirror-polished
gold, mirror-polished chrome or
anodised colors). Each Time Machine can also
be further customized to the desires of its future
owner.
RAINMAN IN THE SUN
Florian Schlumpf, creator and founder,
engineer and artist, has been
creating installations exploring time
and space for decades.
One of these installations is the study
"RAINMAN". The study is the first Time
MONUMENTAL
INSTALLATION FOR CHILDREN
MONUMENTAL
PROJECTS
Florian Schlumpf was asked to build a monumental
installation for a new technology
park for children, located in the Swiss Alps,
in Flims/Graubünden, where children will be able
to experience and witness the ingenious application
of science and technology in a mechanical environment.
The project was developed by a Swiss entrepreneur,
who has already successfully built several such
parks in the past. The concept for the mechanical
part of the park was designed by a Spanish team of
architects.
The installation will be positioned in a spiral
arrangement over two floors, allowing visitors to
overlook the entire installation and to interact with
wheels, gears and transmissions around the lounge
cinebar «La Fabrica».
The project will be realised by Schlumpf in less
than 6 months and will be one of the highlights of
EXPLORit Flims.
DETSKI MIR
MONUMENTAL CLOCK IN
MOSCOW SHOPPING MALL
MONUMENTAL
PROJECTS
In 2014, Schlumpf worked
with the Russian Pedrodvorets
Watch Factory to develop and
build a monumental clock with
a twelve-meter-long pendulum
and cogwheels up to four meters
in diameter for the traditional
Moscow Detski Mir Shopping
Mall.
This project unveiled many new
technologies, one of them being
the Orbital Drive, which allows
the entire clockwork to move
steadily, with only the anchor
wheel stopping intermittently to
preserve the kinetic energy of the
movement.
MONUMENTAL
PROJECTS
INSTALLATION BASELWORLD 2015
Florian Schlumpf installed the
Four-Quadrant Time Machine at
Baselworld 2015, which stood in
the inner courtyard of the famous watch
and clock fair, another monumental
installation.
Its five meters size was big enough
to walk through, inviting the visitor
to listen to the magical sound of four
identical but non-synchronous Time
Machines.
The visitor could also watch the movement
of 24 wheels rotating steadily,
with only the anchor wheels being stopped
and released by the pendulum.
