From the Chairman of the Board and President 

Last year we noted that the American Heart Association 

achieved key metrics of our 2010 strategic goal two years 

early. We exceeded a 25 percent reduction in mortality goals 

for coronary heart disease and stroke. Since then we haven’t 

rested in our fight against heart disease. 

This year the board made a historic decision to adopt a 

new goal: By 2020, to improve the cardiovascular health 

of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from 

cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent. 

The new goal reflects the association’s new focus on 

improving health and quality of life. We’ve moved from a 

more reactive strategy (managing risk by controlling risk 

factors) to a more proactive one (preventing risk by helping 

people live healthier lives).

Take a moment to think about how one person can make an 

Extraordinary Impact. Perhaps it’s by sharing a passion 

for healthy living, or making a scientific discovery that saves 

thousands or advocating for a law that helps millions. 

This Annual Report highlights several people who are 

making such differences, but our association contains 

tens of thousands of them. These extraordinary people, 

our volunteers, infuse our organization with energy. They’re 

the reason recent research shows that the public sees us 

as having an “extraordinary impact.” 

I am proud of what the American Heart Association has 

accomplished in a challenging economy. Even in tough 

times, our volunteers and supporters are focusing on building 

In June, the U.S. Senate passed the Family Smoking 

Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, landmark legislation 

to give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to 

regulate tobacco. For many years, the American Heart 

Association worked tirelessly to move this important bill 

through Congress. Passage of this bill is a courageous step 

to save lives and ensure a healthier future for all Americans. 

We continue to advance initiatives targeted to those at risk, 

including women, children and African Americans. From 

advocacy to quality initiatives, you can read more about 

these accomplishments and many others on the pages 

that follow. 

We continue to embrace bold, aggressive goals to improve 

the cardiovascular health of all Americans. 

The association worked on the Stimulus Plan bill to ensure 

that health information technology is readily available to 

improve the care delivery system. And we’re working tirelessly 

to have a strong voice in the healthcare debate. We know 

we must present the patient’s point of view to members of 

Congress as they debate the future of our healthcare system. 

We’ve also developed a volunteer and staff group focused 

on building our vision for volunteerism. Our goal is to make 

sure that the American Heart Association’s work touches 

even more lives as we move into the next decade. 

Remarkable Achievements 

In addition to the important accomplishments 

noted in these letters, this fiscal year the 

American Heart Association also: 

Increased its Advocacy outreach. Our 

Advocacy Coordinating Committee and 

advocacy staff in Washington played a key 

role in supporting congressional plans for 

healthcare reform. Manuscripts on the 

“Principles for Health Care Reform” as well 

as “Defining Comparative Effectiveness 

Research” were published and shared with 

Members of Congress and congressional 

health policy staff. 

Adopted the new Strategic Plan of the 

Research Committee. The association’s 

research portfolio has been adjusted to include 

greater support for meritorious clinical and 

population health research. 

Completed the Strategic Plan from the 

International Committee. We’ve identified 

many ways the association can have a 

global impact on cardiovascular health 

and prevention. 

Grew Mission: Lifeline, our national 

program to improve emergency treatment for 

victims of STEMI, the most serious kind of 

heart attack. The program, which we launched 

last year, involves state health planners, EMS 

providers (including EMTs and ER staff) and 

hospital- based cardiologists. Mission: Lifeline 

is making a strong impact on healthcare 

protocol—and saving lives.

Go Red For Women is the American heart Association’s 

campaign to teach women to turn personal choices 

into lifesaving actions. highlights from the year include: 

• Raising awareness that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. 

On National Wear Red Day (Feb. 6), more than 500 buildings and 

landmarks were lit in red—from San Francisco cable cars to the 

Empire State Building. Thousands of people wore red, while about 

17,000 companies supported women’s fight against heart disease. 

• Reaching new audiences with the premiere of “Go Red For Women 

presents—Untold Stories of the Heart” on NBC in September 2008. 

The show reached viewers in over 86 markets. 

• Targeting major media to make an impact. Go Red kicked off American 

Heart Month at the Super Bowl with celebrity spokesperson David 

Tyree, formerly of the New York Giants, whose mother died of 

heart disease. Celebrity supporter Andie MacDowell and Dr. Nieca 

Goldberg participated in more than 35 interviews. 

• Increasing our presence in social media by launching a Facebook 

fan page and a Wear Red Day event invitation, where over 141,000 

confirmed their attendance. More than 30,000 women have engaged 

in our community at GoRedForWomen.org. 

• Giving more women tools to make changes with the Go Red BetterU 

online lifestyle change program. Celebrity spokesperson Jennie 

Garth shared how her family has been affected by heart disease. 

Since joining Go Red For Women, 54 percent of registrants have 

exercised more frequently, 43 percent had their cholesterol checked 

and 61 percent modified their diet to include healthy food. 

Our other causes also inspired people to make changes for the better: 


Start! 

Start!, our movement to get people to walk more, eat well and live 

longer, is making an impact. We’ve partnered with the American Council 

on Exercise to develop the first-ever American Heart Association 

online walking plans, which were made available on National Start! 

Walking Day (April 8). 

Start! conducted a survey to understand the effects of the sagging 

economy on individuals’ health. The survey results were featured 

in a Parade Magazine cover story in May 2009. The story was also 

featured on ABC’s World News Tonight with Charles Gibson as well 

as in USA Today. 

Our new Web site, www.StartWalkingNow.org, registered more than 

50,000 people in the first few months, helping participants set fitness 

goals and live healthier lives. 

Also, more than 1,000 companies were recognized as Start! Fit-Friendly. 

Alliance for a healthier Generation 

We’ve remained steadfast in our fight against childhood obesity 

through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, our partnership with 

the William J. Clinton Foundation. By collaborating with providers, 

industry and other stakeholder groups, the Alliance Healthcare Initiative 

has aligned insurance plans so that there is coverage for the essential 

obesity-related care that physicians and dietitians provide to children. 

The goal is for 25 percent of overweight children (about 6.2 million) 

to have access within the first three years. 

The empowerME Kids’ Movement is inspiring kids to make healthy 

behavior changes. Since the movement launched in 2006, more 

than 1.38 million kids have made a commitment to healthy eating 

and physical activity. 

Power To End Stroke 

Power To End Stroke continued to make strides in reaching African 

Americans with stroke prevention messages. See the American Stroke 

Association section on page 6 for more information. 

Yuki’s story 

The heart attacks kept coming—11 in 15 years. Hitoshi Kotani 

also had cardiomyopathy, an inflammation of the heart that 

was caused by a virus. Doctors told him he might have just 

a year to live. 

When the 55-year-old businessman 

came to New York for a heart transplant 

in 2007, his daughter Yuki faced 

a difficult choice. “No matter what, I 

was going to be his caretaker,” she 

said. “The decision was whether I was 

going to be his daughter.” 

Hitoshi had left his family and moved 

to Japan while his children were 

young. Yuki, now 25, felt abandoned. 

“My dad had no idea I was in so much 

pain—I had so much anger bottled 

up inside.” After he recovered from 

surgery, she shared her feelings. 

As Hitoshi healed, his relationship with his daughter did too. 

Hitoshi reached out to Yuki and her siblings. There were apologies, 

then tears. Then Hitoshi started putting his family first. 

Since then, Hitoshi and Yuki discovered they both love art, a 

passion they’ve explored together at galleries. When Yuki 

showed her dad the landscapes and still-lifes she’d painted, 

she learned he also loved to paint. She gave him a watercolor 

set so he might pick up his old hobby. 

With Hitoshi’s support, Yuki co-founded a nonprofit to help 

provide temporary housing for heart patients. Yuki also spreads 

the word about the American Heart Association’s cause 

Go Red For Women. “Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, 

not breast cancer like most people think,” Yuki said. “Raising 

awareness is my passion. It was inspired by my experience 

with my dad—and that touches him.”

The American Stroke Association is reducing the 

devastating impact of stroke, the No. 3 killer in the United 

States, by strategically influencing stroke care. It’s also 

promoting stroke awareness in a campaign that touches 

thousands of lives. Last year we invested almost $157 

million in stroke research and stroke-related programs. 

State Stroke Systems Plan 

The American Stroke Association’s State Stroke System of Care helps 

ensure that patients have access to advanced treatment that deals with 

their urgent needs. It also addresses serious gaps in stroke systems 

by ensuring that staff working in EMS transport systems and hospitals 

are trained to recognize a stroke. 

We’re collaborating with state groups to assess and reduce gaps. 

This initiative is having a tremendous impact. For example: 

• 201 million people, or 66 percent of the U.S. population, now live 

within 30 miles of a Get With The Guidelines-Stroke hospital, giving 

them timely access to acute stroke treatment; 

• 50 states have stroke prevention on the public policy agenda; and 

• 33 states have enhanced 9-1-1 coverage for at least 90 percent of 

their population. 

Medicare Stroke Rehabilitation 

The American Stroke Association continues to work to protect 

Medicare stroke patients. For 2009, Medicare Part B beneficiaries 

were limited to a $1,840 annual therapy cap on combined outpatient 

physical therapy and speech therapy and a separate $1,840 cap on 

outpatient occupational therapy. 

The American Stroke Association and other organizations have worked 

with Congress to allow some Medicare patients to get an exception 


to the caps. Congress extended this “exceptions process” through 

Dec. 30, 2009. Stroke qualifies for an automatic exception, provided 

that the additional therapy services are medically necessary. 

Power To End Stroke 

Many people don’t seek prompt treatment because they don’t know the 

signs and symptom of stroke. With the help of strategic partners, we’ve 

distributed more than 4 million campaign materials to raise awareness 

through Power To End Stroke. 

More than 518,000 people have enrolled in the movement and more than 

20,000 Power Ambassadors (business leaders, legislators, healthcare 

professionals, leaders of faith-based organizations and celebrities/ 

entertainers/athletes) speak passionately against stroke. When they 

hear the message, many people are taking action. After participating 

in Power To End Stroke: 

• 61 percent got their blood pressure checked; 

• 54 percent got their cholesterol checked; and 

• 50 percent started walking or exercising. 

A 13-city gospel tour sang the praises of taking action. About 25,000 

individuals received cardiovascular information through gospel music and 

praise dance. As a part of the tour, stroke screenings were conducted. 

The Power Awards in Atlanta in June honored 22 Ambassadors for 

their efforts to reach African Americans. They included Elder Bernice 

King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King; 

Kenny Lattimore and Chanté Moore (husband and wife) gospel, jazz 

and R&B singers; and Dr. Bobby Jones, gospel artist. Rani Whitfield, 

M.D., a family practitioner who is known as “Tha Hip Hop Doc,” received 

the Legacy Award to honor his outstanding work as a Power To End 

Stroke Ambassador.

Millions of people are getting credible information to 

help them eat better, exercise more and take control of 

their heart health with our patient education resources. 

heart hub & heart360 

We’re reaching more than 30,000 new visitors a month online at 

HeartHub (hearthub.org), where users can access video clips, Podcasts, 

interactive trackers and tools to help manage their heart health. 

From HeartHub, we’re empowering patients and caregivers to 

understand and manage their health with Heart360 (heart360.org), 

which relaunched in October 2008. Users can set goals and track 

their blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, physical activity and blood 

glucose levels—and store the information in a free, secure Microsoft 

HealthVault account. Heart360 is one of the top three applications 

offered on Microsoft HealthVault. The site’s functionality is also being 

used in research initiatives to understand how innovative tools can 

help patients achieve their goals. 

The heart Of Diabetes 

Celebrity spokesperson Randy Jackson and Immediate Past President 

Dr. Dan Jones helped raise awareness about The Heart Of Diabetes. 

The program helps patients better manage their diabetes and decrease 

their risk of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in people 

with type 2 diabetes. 

At HeartOfDiabetes.org we launched My Diabetes Health Assessment. 

This interactive tool is helping patients learn their risk of having a 

heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years, discover the steps they 

can take to reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease 

and access personalized action plans that can help them lead a 

healthier lifestyle. 

Patient Education 

We distributed more than 5.4 million pieces of patient education 

information to patients, healthcare professionals, families and caregivers. 

Heart Insight and Stroke Connection magazines continue to bring 

authoritative, up-to-date heart and stroke information to more than 

half a million patients. And our patient Web sites are growing, receiving 

over 9 million unique visitors. In addition, we launched over 200 pages 

of online health content in Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese. 

Advertising Campaign 

Our national advertising campaign about critical heart-health messages 

had its most successful year to date, generating more than 3 million 

customer engagements. The campaign was fully integrated with TV, 

radio, print and online advertising for the general public, including 

Spanish-speaking audiences. 

In addition, our groundbreaking social media efforts with Facebook 

and custom online games helped us better engage and educate the 

public. And we added value to the campaign by negotiating bonus 

placements valued at more than $4.3 million. 

Nutrition Education 

The American Heart Association’s heart-check mark is the most trusted 

icon on food packaging today—and it continues to resonate with healthconscious 

shoppers in the challenging economy. Our Food Certification 

program saw the number of participating companies rise. We have 

110 companies and about 850 products, with exciting opportunities 

on the horizon. 

Consumer Publications continues to develop books and information to 

help consumers achieve a heart-healthy lifestyle with delicious, nutritious 

meals. More than 1 million copies of the Healthy Soul Food and Go 

Red For Women magazine cookbooks were released earlier this year, 

many in mass market retail locations.

Kenny Taylor 

Kenny Taylor is one of thousands of everyday activists who 

fervently urge lawmakers to pass lifesaving legislation. 

Molly Nolan, who needed several surgeries to repair a congenital 

heart defect, inspires elected officials when she voices her hope for 

improved health outcomes. And long-time volunteer Connie Kerr 

talks passionately about the importance of heart health. In fact, her 

knowledge of warning signs helped her parents to get lifesaving 

treatment when they had heart events. 

This year’s You’re the Cure Lobby Day, led by people like Kenny, Molly 

and Connie, was a tremendous success. Nearly 500 participants 

from all 50 states attended meetings on the Hill in Washington, D.C. 

to advocate for lifesaving legislation. And several thousand You’re 

the Cure advocates sent more than 11,000 messages as part of a 

“virtual” Lobby Day effort, including more than 400 phone calls to 

congressional offices the day of the event. 

Lack of access to quality healthcare has hindered efforts to fight 

cardiovascular diseases, as millions of uninsured and underinsured 

Americans face soaring healthcare costs. The American Heart 

Association is actively working with congressional leaders to reform 

the American healthcare system. 

Congress has extended and expanded the Children’s Health Insurance 

Program (CHIP), thanks in part to the American Heart Association’s 

strong support. This legislation ensures that low-income children, 

including those born with heart defects, have health insurance coverage. 

Additional advocacy highlights include: 

The Economic Stimulus Bill: The American Heart Association and 

its coalition partners were instrumental in generating congressional 

support for several health-related provisions in the American Recovery 

and Reinvestment Act. 


These include: 

• $10 billion in funding for the NIH to support medical research; 

• $650 million for a Prevention and Wellness Fund; and 

• $19 billion to spur the widespread adoption of health 

information technology. 

The FDA Tobacco Bill: Nearly one-third of heart disease and stroke 

deaths are linked to tobacco use, the nation’s leading preventable 

cause of death. After more than a decade of advocacy by the American 

Heart Association and our partner organizations, the Family Smoking 

Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was approved by Congress in June. 

The bill grants the FDA authority over tobacco products and will help 

reduce tobacco-related illnesses including heart disease and stroke. 

The American Heart Association will serve as a resource to the FDA 

as it develops regulations to implement the law. 

Improving Nutrition and Preventing Obesity: We’re working with 

Congress to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Programs, which set 

standards for school meals. We’re also working to pass the Fitness 

Integrated with Teaching Kids Act to hold schools accountable for 

providing high-quality physical education. 

State Advocacy: Momentum for increasing state cigarette excise 

taxes continues to grow. We met our 2010 tobacco tax goal early when 

Arkansas Gov. Mike Bebee signed into law a 56-cent cigarette tax 

increase in February. Tax increases have been proven to significantly 

deter youth smoking. In addition, South Dakota, North Carolina and 

Wisconsin became the 25th, 26th and 27th smoke-free states. 

Finally, Rhode Island passed the most comprehensive stroke systems 

of care legislation to date. It establishes a primary stroke center 

designation process based on The Joint Commission certification and 

ensures that all acute care hospitals develop protocols and participate 

in Get With The Guidelines–Stroke to help improve health outcomes 

for stroke patients. 

Kenny’s story 

On their Mexican honeymoon, Kenny Taylor and his wife Lori 

had big plans, like swimming with dolphins. But four days into 

their trip, Kenny started having trouble breathing. “It was hard 

for me to climb stairs or even walk around.” He stayed in bed 

and prayed he’d feel well enough to fly home. 

Hurricane Ike had forced the couple to cancel their big wedding 

and settle for a small ceremony in Lori’s mother’s home. Now this! 

Back home in Texas, Kenny got off the plane and went straight 

to the ER. He learned he had an enlarged heart caused by blood 

clots in his lungs. “I was scared for my life,” Kenny said. “My 

wife and I were just getting started.” 

Kenny started taking heart medication, began walking two miles 

four days a week and changed his diet. Today he’s eating fewer 

fried foods and more green vegetables. It hasn’t been easy. “As 

you start to feel better, you go back to your old habits.” 

Kenny wanted to keep himself accountable and help others 

by lobbying for lifesaving legislation. Since becoming a You’re 

The Cure advocate, he has testified at the Texas Legislature to 

promote physical education legislation and 

has shared his passion for healthy lifestyles 

with African-American groups. 

Kenny also spoke in support of funding 

for the NIH (National Institutes of Health) 

at Lobby Day on Capitol Hill. “Learning 

about the funding that was awarded for 

heart disease research was amazing—I 

felt like I had a role in accomplishing that,” 

he said. “From my experience with the 

American Heart Association, I know there 

are many ways I can make a difference.”

Pioneers like Olson make discoveries that can save 

lives—and the American heart Association’s research 

programs establish professional career paths, expand 

scientific knowledge and improve lives. 

Visionary philanthropists such as Jon Holden DeHaan, Stevie and 

David Spina, and the trustees of the Bugher Foundation make these 

scientific advances possible. Through the AHA—Jon Holden DeHaan 

Foundation Cardiac Myogenesis Research Centers Program, grants 

have been awarded to a network of centers at the University of Texas 

Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, headed by Olson, plus the 

University of Pennsylvania (Center Director: Jonathan Epstein, MD) 

and the University of Minnesota (Center Director: Doris Taylor, PhD). 

The Jon Holden DeHaan Foundation has a long history of funding 

American Heart Association cardiovascular research. With the 

contribution to the Myogenesis Centers and other AHA awards, the 

foundation has donated $5 million to date. 

Four Outcomes Research Centers Awarded 

The Pharmaceutical Roundtable (PRT) is a strategic coalition of 10 

leading pharmaceutical companies supporting the association’s 

mission. Since 1988, this group has provided more than $55 million 

to support our cardiovascular and stroke research program. 

The American Heart Association awarded $14.5 million to form a 

network of four AHA Pharmaceutical Roundtable Outcomes Research 

Centers. In addition to $12.2 million in support from the PRT, the 

Outcomes Research Centers are also supported by a generous gift 

from American Heart Association national Board member David Spina 

and his wife, Stevie Spina. 

Over the next four years, the centers will work together and conduct 

research to determine which factors lead to the greatest improvements 

in healthcare outcomes for heart disease and stroke patients. This 



will help stakeholders make informed practice and policy decisions.

Innovative Research Grant Program Launched 

In July 2008, the American Heart Association Research Program 

launched the Innovative Research Grant (IRG) to support innovative, 

high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or 

major advancements. Each two-year, $150,000 award was available to 

any faculty-/staff-level investigator. Over 480 applications were received. 

The top 14 proposals shared an allocation of $2.1 million, and these 

projects got underway on Jan. 1, 2009. The funding for these awards 

came from a collaborative effort of the American Heart Association 

Strategic Initiatives Fund, the National Research Program and the 

research programs of the American Heart Association’s Founders, 

Mid-Atlantic, Great Rivers, Greater Southeast and Midwest affiliates. 

In 2008–09, the association received more than 6,100 applications for 

funding through the National Research Program and the eight affiliate 

research programs. More than 1,000 new research awards were 

made, totaling about $132 million. To ensure a continued high-quality 

cardiovascular disease and stroke research pipeline, we awarded 

about two-thirds of our research dollars to early-career investigators. 

In 2008–09, that amounted to $100.8 million. 

Eric’s Story 

Much of what is known about cardiac gene regulation can be 

traced to the pioneering work of Eric Olson, Ph.D. 

“A major emphasis of my research is to 

understand how the heart works normally 

and how it malfunctions in disease,” said Olson, 

director of the AHA–Jon Holden DeHaan 

Foundation Cardiac Myogenesis Research 

Center at the University of Texas South- 

western Medical Center in Dallas. “Discoveries 

in basic science serve as the foundation 

for medicine. We are optimistic that our 

research will lead to important medical 

breakthroughs in heart disease.” 

The association, in partnership with the Jon 

Holden DeHaan Foundation, which provided critical support for this 

initiative, awarded funding to UT Southwestern, the University of 

Minnesota and the University of Pennsylvania. The goal is to speed 

the day when regenerating cardiac muscle cells can help improve 

outcomes for heart attack and heart failure patients. 

“The American Heart Association has played a catalytic role in my 

career,” said Olson, who was supported by an American Heart 

Association fellowship, by association grants and by an Established 

Investigator Award. 

Olson’s team has discovered networks of genes that orchestrate 

the formation of the heart and has shown how inherited genetic 

mutations cause congenital heart disease, a common birth defect. 

“We hope to develop new strategies to repair the heart using small 

drug-like chemicals that can stimulate stem cells to become cardiac 

muscle cells,” Olson said. “We also intend to exploit a family of tiny 

RNA molecules, called microRNAs, which regulate many important 

processes in the heart, such as survival of heart muscle cells.” 

Olson says that science inspires him like art or music does others. 

“The way in which each person pursues a scientific question reflects 

creativity, personality and imagination.”

Quality Initiatives 

The American Heart Association is saving lives by improving systems 

and care for heart and stroke patients. 

Get With The Guidelines ® is our quality improvement program 

that helps hospitals follow proven practices to improve outcomes 

for heart disease and stroke patients. More than 1,500 hospitals 

are participating in the program and more than 2 million patient 

records have been entered. Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure 

saw significant progress through our collaboration with The Joint 

Commission on the Advanced Certification in Heart Failure. 

Get With The Guidelines–Stroke has made an impact on more than 

1 million stroke patients since its launch in 2003. The success of the 

program has helped shape the decisions of the Center for Medicare 

and Medicaid Services (CMS) related to stroke care. Beginning in 

2010, hospitals submitting Medicare claims must let CMS know if they 

participate in a database registry for stroke care, such as GWTG–Stroke. 

About 400,000 people a year suffer a STEMI (ST-segment elevation 

myocardial infarction), the kind of heart attack where a coronary 

artery is totally blocked so that the heart muscle beyond the 

blockage dies if the artery isn’t opened in time. Mission: Lifeline, 

our initiative to advance the systems of care for these patients, is 

working with local healthcare professionals to improve patients’ 

outcomes. This requires Emergency Medical Systems and hospitals 

to agree on local plans for identifying, triaging and treating patients 

in a timely manner. Mission: Lifeline’s goal is to ensure that the right 

equipment, training and processes are in place to make sure every 

patient has access to the best available care every time. 

ECC 

To support the efforts of Mission: Lifeline, Emergency Cardiovascular 

Care (ECC) launched three products focused on improving healthcare 

professionals’ readiness to respond to STEMI patients: the STEMI 


Provider Manual, the Electrocardiogram Acute Coronary Syndrome 

(ECG ACS) Ruler, and Learn: TM Rapid STEMI ID, an eLearning course. 

ECC is also giving healthcare professionals more options for 

lifesaving training. We expanded our online platform by launching 

HeartCode ACLS Part 1 and HeartCode BLS Part 1. And 

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online is training employees 

whose jobs may involve contact with blood and are subject to 

OSHA regulations. 

In the area of stroke, Stroke Hospital-Based Care Online, Stroke 

Prehospital Care Online, and Acute Stroke Online are providing training 

on assessing, diagnosing, treating and managing stroke. 

Consumers can now use “Pocket First Aid & CPR”—the American 

Heart Association’s first application for the Apple iPhone. It features 

illustrations and videos covering CPR and first aid procedures. 

Professional Education 

Over 300,000 healthcare professionals are registered with the 

Professional Education Center (PEC), their source for CVD and 

stroke continuing education. It’s the single location for professionals 

to maintain their continuing education history with the association. 

More than 192,000 healthcare professionals on the PEC have enrolled 

in the NIH Stroke Scale Course, which is critical to stroke assessment. 

Sharing information is invaluable to medical professionals. More than 

23,000 attended our annual Scientific Sessions, the world’s premier 

forum for cardiovascular science presentations and discussions. 

Our International Stroke Conference drew more than 4,300 attendees, 

including more than 3,400 medical professionals. Our State-Of-The- 

Art Stroke Nursing Symposium drew almost 900 nurse professionals. 

The association’s specialty conferences also continue to flourish. 

The Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Conference 

attracted almost 1,000 attendees, making it our third-largest 

scientific conference. 

Cultural Health Initiatives 

It takes volunteers like Cordelia Clapp, a member of the Pawnee 

tribe of Oklahoma and a long-time association volunteer, to 

drive our outreach to diverse populations. Cordelia has made it 

her life mission to educate Native Americans about their risks 

for heart disease. 

Thousands of volunteers help us cultivate and implement 

heart-health educational programs. Last year, more than 2,800 

sites helped implement programs that touched the African- 

American and Hispanic/Latino populations. Our strategic alliances 

range from small community organizations that teach health 

workers heart-health information to national organizations like 

Delta Sigma Theta, whose chapters disseminate Power To End 

Stroke messages. 

We’re also reaching millions of at-risk Hispanics by partnering with 

Spanish-language media giant Univision. We have a microsite 

online at Univision.com and also are featured on a weekly health 

radio show. Every Saturday the “El Consultorio de la Doctora 

Eliza” radio program airs an American Heart Association segment. 

In the Western States Affiliate, volunteer task forces for the Chinese 

and Philippino communities implemented educational programs 

in schools and community centers. 

They also worked to incorporate 

local groups into the Start! Heart 

Walk. And our awareness programs 

in the South Central Affiliate, with 

help from people like Cordelia, led 

to almost 5,000 Native Americans 

taking the Go Healthy or Go Red 

For Women pledge.

Individuals can make an extraordinary impact in so many 

ways—at work, while shopping and at American heart 

Association events. Despite the economic downturn, 

companies and consumers continued their commitment 

to saving lives from heart disease and stroke. 

In workplace giving, companies like UnitedHealth Group and 

American Airlines showed their support by adding the American 

Heart Association to their pledge cards. Shoppers showed their 

dedication at the registers at Ross, Jiffy Lube, Rite Aid and Walgreens 

with donations that yielded over $4.3 million. And at American Heart 

Association special events, donors continued to share their passion 

in meaningful ways to help us advance our mission. 

Active volunteers and strong supporters are at the heart of what we 

do. The Howard and Sondra Bender family, who has been personally 

touched by heart disease, made a $1 million leadership gift to the 

2010 Washington DC heart Ball. Overall, almost 2,500 new donors 

gave through special appeals during these black-tie ball events. 

Our Start! heart Walk highlights the importance of physical activity 

while raising funds for our mission. This year 14 percent more people 

(over the prior year) stepped up to participate! Dallas and Chicago 

each raised more than $2.9 million. Overall, 21 events raised more 

than $1 million each, and 68 companies raised more than $100,000 

each. Our top company, Oracle, raised $512,000 for the Boston 

Start! Heart Walk. 

Jump Rope For heart and hoops For heart continue to teach 

kids the importance of developing healthy habits while raising critical 

funds to help others, such as children affected by heart disease and 

stroke. Our programs recruited the most schools ever—more than 

39,100 K–8 schools. We reached 3,500 new schools and 2 million 

participating students with this important learning opportunity. 


Corporations continued their support as well. Through corporate 

sponsorships, lifesaving messages were shared in advertising, on 

signage and on point of sale materials to help shoppers in grocery 

stores make healthy lifestyle decisions. Consumer giants Ocean Spray 

and Campbell’s committed $1.416 million and $1.875 million to our 

Go Red For Women movement. 

We launched much-needed high blood pressure education and 

healthcare quality improvement initiatives, thanks to the support 

of Novartis, Medtronic, Merck/Schering-Plough and Pfizer, which 

provided $4.65 million. And a $1 million grant from the Medtronic 

Foundation will help us launch our first national campaign to teach 

more young people the lifesaving skill of CPR. 

In the area of research, four centers of excellence focusing on 

outcomes research (see page 10) were funded by the American Heart 

Association’s Pharmaceutical Roundtable and David and Stevie Spina. 

Our Major Gift and Foundation program continues to grow, 

despite the difficult economy. This year marks the 25th anniversary 

of the relationship between the American Heart Association and the 

Bugher Foundation, which has generously and faithfully supported 

our groundbreaking research for the last 25 years. In that time, they 

have given $25.3 million for research and more than another half 

million for a stroke awareness campaign. 

More highlights: 

• Our online Memorial and Tribute program—as well as general online contributions— 

totaled $5 million, an increase of 5.8 percent over the prior year. 

• More than 300,000 volunteers completed the “Dear Neighbor” residential 

neighborhood campaign, generating $13.7 million and raising awareness about 

the importance of heart health. 

• The Kansas City Go Red For Women luncheon tripled its prior-year earnings 

to more than $900,000. 

• In Planned Giving, we received five bequests of $1 million or more. While the 

average estate value declined, total Estate Settlement income still exceeded 

$75 million. And new gift commitments surpassed $120 million. 

Natalia’s story 

At eight days old, tiny Natalia Bascunan stopped eating. Doctors 

thought she had meningitis and did a spinal tap. “Natalia flatlined 

and they had to intubate her,” said her mother, Roe. 

In the ER, Roe heard, “‘We have a baby in critical condition.’ 

Everyone was running and going crazy because 

my daughter wasn’t breathing.” 

The little girl was in shock; she was dying. 

Natalia had critical coarctation (narrowing) of the 

aorta and mild hypoplastic left heart syndrome. 

She was transferred to the neonatal unit, where 

her aorta was surgically opened. 

“She stopped breathing again,” Roe said. “They 

told me to call a priest.” Roe and her husband 

Christian hugged and cried while the priest 

read the baby’s last rites. 

Miraculously, Natalia stabilized for a second 

surgery at 10 days old, on her dad’s birthday. 

The couple was terrified until the surgeon told them, 

“Your little baby is going to be just fine.” 

Today, Natalia, 8, is a strong-willed tomboy who loves flag football 

and visits the cardiologist every six months. Three years ago, she 

started getting short of breath during gymnastics. Tests showed 

she had a subaortic membrane, tissue blocking blood flow out 

of the heart that required surgery to correct. Some day Natalia 

may need to have her aorta replaced. 

“I’m never going to get a good night’s sleep,” Roe said. “At night 

I watch her breathe.” 

Natalia and her family participate in the Start! Heart Walk and 

Jump Rope For Heart because donations fund lifesaving research. 

“We try and raise as much money as we possibly can,” Roe said. 

“The surgeon told us that if Natalia had been born with this 20 years 

ago that she wouldn’t have survived. Medical advances made 

her life possible. Thanks to doctors, surgeons and the American 

Heart Association, we are blessed to have her with us today.”
