The Prophet ﷺ only preferred seclusion and being alone from his people because of<br />

the manifest error he saw them engaged in - worshiping idols and images and<br />

prostrating to them. His love for seclusion grew stronger as the time for receiving<br />

Inspirations (Revelation) from <strong>Al</strong>laah got closer – may peace and blessings of <strong>Al</strong>laah be<br />

upon him.<br />

Explanation of some of the words from the Ḥadeeth of `Aaishah:<br />

The statement: that he ﷺ used to do “al-Taḥannath”, here means as:<br />

“devotion/worhip” which is interpreted from the context; whereas the real meaning of<br />

the word is: “leaving al-Ḥinth” (i.e. sin or perjury). These words have a form like the<br />

verb: “Taḥannatha”, i.e. “he left the state of al-Ḥinth”. Examples: would be:<br />

“Taḥawwaba”, i.e. “he abstained from crime”; “Taḥarraja”, i.e. “he kept away from<br />

sins”; “Ta’aththama”, i.e. “he abstained from iniquity”. Similarly, there is “Tahajjada”,<br />

i.e. giving up al-Hujood (abandoning the sleep or waking up from it) for establishing the<br />

(night) prayers. <strong>Al</strong>so there are: “Tanajjasa”, i.e. “he left an impure state” (he cleaned<br />

himself); and “Taqadhdhara” i.e. “he avoided foul actions”. Abu Shaamah cited this<br />

example. 130<br />

The statement: “till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of<br />

Ḥiraa”, meaning: it came to him abruptly and unexpectedly, as <strong>Al</strong>laah تعاىل said:<br />

‏﴿ُوَمَاُك نتَُُتَر ج وُ‏ أَن ‏ُي ل قَىُُإِلَي كَُُال كِتَاب ‏ُُإِّلَُُّرَمح ‏َةُُمِّنُرَّبِّكَُ﴾‏<br />

{And you were not expecting that the Book (this Qur’aan) would be sent down to<br />

you, but it is a mercy from your Lord.} [Surah al-Qasas (28): 86]<br />

And it was during this period that the following Aayaat were revealed:<br />

130 [TN: Imaam al-Nawawee said: The word “al-Taḥannatha” ‏(التحنث)‏ means: “worship”, as was clarified in the<br />

Ḥadeeth. And in another narration, it is explained as: “doing righteous deeds and acts of obedience”. The `Arab<br />

linguists have said: “al-Taḥannatha” means: “doing actions which take one away from sins”. Similarly, the words:<br />

“Ta’aththama” ‏,(تأث)‏ “Taḥarraja” ‏,(حترج)‏ and “Tahajjada” ‏(هتجد)‏ mean the same, i.e. doing actions which take one<br />

away from sins. [Sharh Ṣaḥeeḥ Muslim of al-Nawawee (2/140)]]<br />
