Chapter 17: The commissioning of the Prophethood and some of the
predictive signs thereof (Part 5)
{Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e.
Muḥammad) whom they find written with them in the Taurah and the Injeel, - he
commands them for al-Ma`roof (i.e. Islaamic Monotheism and all that Islaam has
ordained); and forbids them from al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds,
and all that Islaam has forbidden); he allows them as lawful al-Ṭaiyibaat [(i.e. all good
and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them
as unlawful al-Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs,
persons, foods, etc.), he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allaah’s
Covenant), and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who
believe in him (Muḥammad), honor him, help him, and follow the light (the Qur’aan)
which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful.} [Surah al-A`raaf
(7): 157]
Imaam Aḥmad recorded that Abu Sakhr Al-`Uqayli said that a Bedouin man said to him:
“I brought some goods 107 to al-Madeenah during the lifetime of Allaah’s Messenger
After I sold it, I said to myself: `I should meet this man (Muḥammad) and listen to .ﷺ
him.’ So I passed by him while he was walking between Abu Bakr and `Umar, and I
followed them until they passed by a Jewish man, who was reading the Taurah. He was
consoling himself with it as a son of his was dying and was one of the most handsome
of boys. The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ asked him (the father): ❝I ask you, by Him
Who has sent down the Taurah, do you find any description of me and my place of
origin in your Scripture?❞ He nodded his head in the negative. His son said: “Rather,
yes, by He Who has sent down the Taurah! We find the description of you and your
place of origin in our Scripture. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship
107 [TN: in another narration, it is: a milk-producing camel]
