door), and they raised this door (two meters from the ground level) so that not
everyone could get inside it. They allowed only the people they wished and prevented
those whom they did not desire to enter.
In the Ṣaḥeeḥain it is reported Ḥadeeth of `Aaishah رضي ‏ُاهلل ‏ُعنها that she asked the
Prophet ﷺ about the wall (outside the Ka`bah): “Is it regarded as part of the
Ka`bah?” He ﷺ replied: ❝Yes.❞ I said: “Then why didn't the people include it in the
Ka`bah?” He ﷺ said: ❝(Because) your people ran short of money.❞ I asked: “And
why is its gate so high?” He ﷺ replied: ❝Your people did so in order to admit to it
whom they would and forbid whom they would. Were your people not still close to
the period of ignorance, and were I not afraid that their hearts might deny my action,
then surely I would include the wall in the Ka`bah and make its gate touch the
ground.❞ 75
This is how Ibn Zubair رضي ‏ُاهلل ‏ُعنه rebuilt the Ka`bah, just as the Prophet’s ﷺ had
indicated, with extreme beauty and splendor, which was based on the foundations laid
by Ibraaheem ‏,عليهُالسالم having two doors, one facing the east and the other facing the
west, one door for the entrance and the other for the exit, and brought the doors down
to the level of the ground. When al-Ḥajjaaj executed Ibn Zubair ‏,رضيُاهللُعنه he (al-Ḥajjaaj)
wrote to `Abdul Malik Ibn Marwaan – who was the Khaleefah at that time – stating the
changes made by Ibn Zubair to the Ka`bah. They believed that he made the changes on
his own accord. So he (`Abdul Malik) ordered that the Ka`bah should be returned to its
previous shape, and to this day it is like that. 76
403, 404, 405)
76 [TN: This is also reported in Ṣaḥeeḥ Muslim (1333-402, 403, 404) as follows:
`Aṭaa’ reported: When the House (the Ka`bah) was burnt during the time of Yazeed Ibn Mu`aawiyah, when the
people of al-Shaam had fought (in Makkah), and it happened with it (the Ka`bah) what was (in store for it), Ibn
Zubair رضيُاهللُعنهما left it (in the same state) until the people came Ḥajj. (The idea behind was) that he wanted to
exhort them or incite them (to fight) against the people of al-Shaam. When the people had arrived he said to
them: “O people, advise me in regards to the Ka`bah. Should I demolish it and then rebuild it from its very
foundation, or should I (only) repair the damage that has been done to it?” Ibn 'Abbas said: ‘An idea has occurred
to me concerning it. I think that you should only repair (the portion which has been) damaged, and leave the
House (in that very state it was) when the people embraced Islaam, and over which Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ was
sent.’ Thereupon Ibn Zubair said: “If the house of one of you is burned, would he be happy unless he rebuilt it?
Then what about the House of your Lord (which is far more important than your house)? I would pray to my Lord
for guidance (Istikhaarah) three times and then I will make up my mind.” After seeking good advice (Istikhaarah)
three times, he made up his mind to demolish it. The people were afraid that a calamity might fall from heaven
on those persons who would be first to climb (over the building for the purpose of demolishing it), till one (took
up courage, and ascended the roof), and threw down one of its stones. When the people saw no calamity
