This argumentation they pursued was futile, and they were aware of that because they were an Àrab people. It is part of their language that “maa” ‏(ما)‏ (“that which”), in the above Aayah implies in Àrabic something that does not think (i.e. an inanimate thing). Allaah’s statement: {Certainly! You (disbelievers) and that which you are worshipping now besides Allaah, are (but) fuel for Hell! (Surely), you will enter it.}, refers to the rocks carved as idols which they used to worship. It does not include the Angels that they claimed to be worshiping inside these images. Nor does it include Èesaa, Ùzair or any of the righteous persons because that item of language, “maa” ‏(ما)‏ cannot include them, directly or by implication. They knew well that the comparison that they were making to Èesaa Ibn Maryam was futile. As Allaah تعاىل said: {They quoted not the above example except for argument. Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people.} Then Allaah تعاىل said: {He}, meaning: Èesaa, {was nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favor}, that is, by Prophethood, {and We made him an example to the Children of Israa’eel}, meaning: as an indication of totality of Allaah’s power to achieve what He تعاىل intends and wishes, having created Èesaa from a female without a male. Similarly, Allaah تعاىل created Hawwaa’ from a male without a female, and created Aadam without either, while He created the rest of the mankind from both male and female. As Allaah تعاىل said in another Aayah: {And certainly, We are creating him as a He said: ‘Summon him for me.’ (Prophet) Muḥammad ﷺ was summoned and Ibn al-Zaba`ra said: ‘O Muḥammad! Is this specific only for our gods or for all (the gods) which are worshiped other than Allaah? He (the Prophet) said: ❝Rather for all that which is worshiped besides Allaah وجل ‏❞.عز He said: ‘We oppose it by the Lord of this structure (the Ka`bah). O Muḥammad, don’t you consider that Èesaa is a righteous slave, and Ùzair is a righteous slave and the Angels are righteous servants?’ He ﷺ said: ❝Certainly!❞ He said: ‘These are the Christians who worship Èesaa, and these are the Jews who worship Ùzair and this is the tribe of Maleeh who worship the Angels.’ The people of Makkah made a loud noise (out of excitement thinking that Ibn al-Zaba`ra has got the upper hand). So this Aayah was revealed: ‏﴿إِنَُّالَّذِينَُسَبَقَت ‏َُلَ‏ مُمِّنَّاُاحل س نَىُأ ولَىئِكَ‏ ‏ُعَن هَاُم ب عَد ونَ﴾‏ {Verily those for whom the good has preceded from Us, they will be removed far therefrom (Hell).} As well as this Aayah was revealed: ‏﴿وَلَمَّاُض رِبَ‏ ‏ُاب ن ‏ُمَر ميََُمَثَال ‏ُإِذَاُقَو م كَ‏ ‏ُمِن ه ‏ُيَصِدُّونَ﴾‏ {And when the son of Maryam is quoted as an example [i.e. Èesaa is worshipped like their idols), behold! Ubay Ibn Khalaf was informed about this. So Ubay went to Ùqbah and said: ‘I do not want to hear ever again that you sat down with Muḥammad or listened to him! I will never face you again nor speak to you till you spit in his face!’ So, the enemy of Allaah, Ùqbah Ibn Abee Muàit did that, may Allaah’s curse be upon him. 277 So Allaah تعاىل sent down the following Aayaat: 275 (Shaikh al-Albaanee said): This is how Ibn Katheer mentioned his name, but in “al-Seerah” (1/387) of Ibn Hishaam, it is Abu Masòod Àmr Ibn Ùmair al-Thaqafee, and this is more correct.
