the world to its membersnow

nine million. A 1995 article
that captured the magazine'
s long fascin ation with
science, history, and art
appeared in February: the
computer-aided recon struction
of centuries-old Maya murals at Bonampak,
Mexico. Working from photographs of the
cleaned murals (top left), artists and experts
combined infrared images, line art, and a computer
program to re-creat e the mural s' original
appearance (top right).
The famil y of NATIONAL GEOGRAPlliC members
grew in a remarkable new direction in 1995
with the launchin g of our first-ever foreignlanguage
edition , in Iapan. Its reception has
been phenomenal. Original project ions were for
88,000 membe rs the first year; the actual number
topped 160,000 .
TRAVELERand WORLD also celebrated landmark
years: WORLD published its 20th anniversary
edition , and for the fourth consecutive year
TRAVELERwon the Folio: Editorial Excellence
Award for best travel magazine. And in September
WORLD hosted the first Kids' Hall of
Fame Awards, cosponsored with Pizza Hut. Six
young people were honored at our Washington,
D.C., headquarters. Among them was Aaron
Gordon (left) , a l3 -year-old from Miami ,
Florida, who for five years has championed the
installati on of seat belts in school buses.
Television is playing a large r role in the
Society's mission. In 1995, for the first time,
National Geographic Television programs
appeared on public , commercial, and cable TV.
At the Emm y Awards ceremony in 1995, Society
programs took 11Emmys, the most ofany documentary
producer.
The art of radio documentary is enjo ying a
renai ssance thank s in part to our series "Radio
Expeditions," coproduced with National Public
Radio and underwritten by the Teresa and H.
John Heinz ill Fund ofthe Heinz Family Foundation
of Pittsburgh.
From the time we pioneered the use of color
film for our magazine , the Society has been on
the cutting edge ofnew inform ation technology.
That tradition con tinues as we prepar e to launch
a National Geographic home page on the Internet.
Work on the page progressed throughout
1995, with an early 1996 on-line target date.
The Societ y's traditi on of personali zed service
continues as well. Our 55,000-titie library at
headquarters served staff, Society members , and
librarie s worldwide in 1995, while our Research
Correspondence Division answered some 45,000
inquiries from the publi c.
As you use this Index , I hope you'll recall
some of the Society's highlights of the past year.
But also know it reflects continued commitment
to our mission-the incre ase and diffu sion of
geographic knowledge.
