EDITOR’S NOTE
Red Hot
“Everything good, everything
magical happens between the
months of June and August,”
wrote Jenny Han in ‘The Summer
I Turned Pretty’. The book is
part of a trilogy of young adult
fiction, the kind you’d read when
you’re 16 on a beach during
school vacation, but we’d like to
think the sentiment remains true
regardless of age. After all, we
look forward to the beginning
of a new year when we cast off
the old, and the end of the year is
when we look back and celebrate
with friends and family; but the
middle of the year is as good a
time as any to celebrate life. It’s
the season of school holidays
and vacation plans, of delicious
warmth (in most places), and
a time when you can shrug off
formality and adorn a more
simple, effortless approach
to living.
In tune with that, this issue’s
theme is Red Hot and pertains not
just to the reading on your car’s
temperature gauge, but to all that
is on trend and of-the-minute.
You’ve heard the phrase “If you
can’t stand the heat, get out of the
kitchen”. Dominik Fruth MD of
Häfele Malaysia, Singapore and
Vietnam is all about the kitchen
and more. He heads a regional
team that provides complete
kitchen solutions from intelligent storage systems to smart hinges and security locks.
There’s no denying the heat that burlesque star Dita Von Teese brings to her art; her passion for dance has
catapulted her to global fame. We speak with this modern-day feminist in this issue’s Game Changer interview.
If that makes you thirsty (and we think it will) then consider the perfect drink for these hot months – gin.
Ever since gin and tonic was prescribed by doctors as a cure for malaria, this clear spirit has been favoured in
tropical countries such as our own, and is now back in fashion. We explore gin culture with Scottish gin maker
The Botanist before turning to one of the hottest culinary cities in the world, Parma, home of Parma ham
and Parmesan cheese.
Of course when it comes to food there’s no denying our own insatiable appetite for the spicy. This month’s
Dishes certainly fit the bill and are sure to fire up the senses. We hope this issue does the same.
On Edge
White-knuckle supernatural thrillers that will have you gripping its pages.
CURATED BY TRACY CELINE
CHALK
PAUL CORNELL
On Halloween night in the
town’s woods, 14-year-old
Andrew Waggoner falls
victim to a particularly
violent bout of bullying by the
school bullies, led by Drake.
This time, he doesn’t leave
unscathed and is ravaged both
mentally and physically. That
same night, dark forces bring
into being his doppelgänger –
although two different people,
this version of himself swears
to take revenge, promising
to resolve matters by the
following Halloween so that
Calne, Wiltshire will be safe
place for Andrew. Can Andrew
stop him and save himself in
the process?
A GOD IN THE SHED
J.F. DUBEAU
Saint-Ferdinand is a seemingly
idyllic small village. But a terrible
history haunts the residents – the
town cemetery is filled with the
victims of the Saint-Ferdinand
Killer, who has dodged capture
for two decades. When Inspector
Stephen Crowley finally catches
the killer, the residents learn that
much darker forces are at play.
Meanwhile, a dark spirit reveals
itself to Venus McKenzie when
she unintentionally traps it in
her parent’s shed. What follows
next is the discovery that the
murders are only the tip of the
ice berg and that the town has
tried to bury its past with the
creature. But nothing ever stays
hidden for long.
Our Pick...
SLEEPING BEAUTIES
STEPHEN & OWEN KING
This collaboration between father-son duo Stephen and Owen King tells the
story of the Aurora virus, so named for the mysterious occurrence that happens
to women when they go to sleep: they become wrapped in a cocoon-like gauze;
and if awakened and the cocoon disturbed, they wake up violent and feral.
The world is falling into a state of disarray, and the men are relying on their
increasingly primal instincts and fighting each other. Only one woman, Evie
Black, is unaffected by the Aurora virus. Could she be the key to curing the
worldwide outbreak, or is she the one pulling the strings?
LITTLE HEAVEN
NICK CUTTER
When Ellen Bellhaven hires a
trio of professional killers to
save her nephew, no one could
have predicted the events that
were about to unfold. It was a
simple enough task: find and
check in on her nephew, who
has been taken to a religious
cult called Little Heaven in the
backwoods of New Mexico.
Shortly after they arrive
and meet charismatic leader
Reverend Amos Flesher,
things begin to unravel – the
settlement becomes paranoid,
and the mercenaries come
face to face with demons both
personal and supernatural.
MALUS DOMESTICA
S.A. HUNT
If witches are real, then what
Robin Martine claimed
five years ago when she told
authorities her mother’s
death was caused by magic is
real. However, the cops didn’t
believe her and she spent the
next few years in the psych
ward. A man named Heinrich
Hammer came to her rescue,
but with the condition
that she kill witches. Now a
seasoned witch hunter who
kills them on YouTube for a
living, Robin has come home
to face the coven who killed
her mother and to save her
town once and for all.
Pre U @ Fairview: Making Waves
As thousands of young people leave
their secondary education and look
forward towards their future, they
are increasingly looking at Fairview’s
International Baccalaureate Diploma
(IBDP) and NCUK International
Foundation Year (IFY) programmes
as their top choices to progress to
universities abroad and locally.
The IBDP is an internationally renowned
diploma programme which runs for a
course of two years. Established by the
non-profit International Baccalaureate
Organisation (IBO), students are given
the option to pick the course of their
choice from six subject groups. Aside
from that, they’ll be required to balance
an additional three core sub-units which
include the Theory of Knowledge (ToK),
the extended essay, and the Creativity,
Activity, Service (CAS).
The IBDP is a perfect fit for motivated
go-getters who are looking into selfdevelopment
alongside their studies.
Beside from focusing solely on
academics, students are able to be
active outside of the classroom and
contribute towards to society in their
own way.
It is a well-known fact that IBDP
graduates can move on easily to
university as they are used to juggling
their priorities. This makes it a good
option for those who are considering
undergoing a rigorous undergraduate
programme which will test them
beyond their academics. Generally the
majority of the top universities provides
additional credits to IBDP students
Celebrating Success @ The World Scholar’s Cup
who score well during their studies. For
instance, institutions such as New York
University, Stanford University, and Ivy
League’s University of Pennsylvania are
some of the many universities in the
world which give out additional credit
hours for IBDP graduates who are
proceeding towards their undergraduate
studies. Generally, IBDP students
adapt better in their university years
as compared to those coming from an
A-levels background.
Meanwhile, the NCUK International
Foundation Year Programme (IFY) that
is exclusively offered by Fairview, offers
students a condensed 9 months preuniversity
programme, for those seeking
to pursue a degree programme in the
United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and
even the United States. As a 9 months
pre-university programme, the IFY
combines academic study, intensive
English language preparation, study
skills and cultural orientation.
The IFY offers three streams you can
choose from, which are business,
science and engineering, leading to over
1,500 undergraduate majors.
Upon successful completion of the
IFY, students will have guaranteed
access to 12 UK universities, namely
the Aston University, University of
Bradford, University of Huddersfield,
University of Kent, University of
Leeds, Kingston University London,
Leeds Beckett University, Manchester
Metropolitan University, Liverpool
John Moores University, University of
Salford, Sheffield Hallam University and
University of Birmingham among others.
The University of Manchester, described
the IFY, as the best such foundation
year in the market place, for students
who want to do their foundation year in
their home country, and then move on
to a degree programme in the UK.
Todate, more than 5,000 Malaysians
have gone through the IFY, and
progressed to successfully complete
their degree programme.
Triumph of conquering the Great Wall of China
Join the Fairview family today via the
IBDP or the NCUK IFY to get a head
start in life. For more information, please
Reality Bites
Fiercely individualistic films that use contemporary themes to conjure modern day fears.
THE WITCH [2016]
Writer-director Robert Eggers’s
prize-winning Sundance Film
Festival debut is a period horror
rooted in religious chauvinism
and social isolation. Expelled
from a Puritan plantation,
a God-fearing family of five
set up home on the edge of a
secluded forest. However it
isn’t long before life unravels.
Although the work of a witch,
the family’s blonde teenage
blonde daughter, Thomasin
appears to be at the centre of
a series of horrific tragedies.
Beneath all the wickedness, each
family member hide their own
dark secret. A master storyteller
who embraces the bleak, Eggers
expertly uses the concept of sin
and how the anxiety it creates
naturally invites horror home.
Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy,
Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie,
Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger
and Lucas Dawson
IT FOLLOWS [2014]
It Follows, shrewdly side steps
mainstream teen culture and
laterally focuses on awkward
adolescence in this indie
chiller with a modern twist.
Maika Monroe plays Jay, a
high-schooler whose life turns
chaotic after a fling with Hugh
(Jake Weary). As a result of
her dalliance, she is now being
stalked by a shape-shifting
demon whose curse forces Jay
to selects someone to hook
to pass on the malediction.
Inspired by the work of George
Romero and John Carpenter,
writer-director David Robert
Mitchell’s tightly-coiled tale
of sexual trepidation evokes
both the horror and release
that casual sexual and sexual
liberations brings.
Starring: Maika Monroe,
Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto,
Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi
and Lili Sepe
GET OUT [2017]
Director Jordon Peele tackles
the timely issue of racerelations
with great depth,
sophistication and some truly
jolting scenes in Get Out. It
is an insightful look at black
male paranoia and the story
revolves around African-
American photographer Chris
Washington (Daniel Kaluuya)
whose white girlfriend,
Rose, invites him to her
family estate. The posh white
neighbourhood’s attitude
towards him is baffling and the
reactions from the only other
black people there intense.
Levity comes by way of Chris’
friend Rod Williams, a TSA
Officer whose phone calls to
Chris provide comic relief.
Starring: Daniel Kaluuya,
Allison Williams, Bradley
Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones,
Stephen Root, Lakeith Stanfield,
Catherine Keene
THE BABADOOK [2014]
A supernatural film by first-time
director Jennifer Kent, this taut
Australian film focuses in on single
mother Amelia as she struggles to
manage her young son, Samuel.
Things take a dark and discomfiting
turn when a creepy pop-up book
featuring a creature called the
Babadook turns up. This strange
top hat-wearing shadowy figure
announces his arrival with a knock
at the door that goes “babadoook
dook dook” and who will haunt your
house if you open your door to him.
In Amelia’s world of paranoia and
anxiety that door isn’t necessarily
a physical one and the Babadook
may well be a creature of her own
making. In an industry where scares
are usually dished out by monsters
and vampires, this interesting tale
delivers a satisfying tension without
having to rely on the usual tropes.
Starring: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman,
Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney,
Barbara West and Ben Winspear
Our Pick...
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN [2008]
An adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s romantic horror novel of the same name (he is also the
film’s screenplay writer), this teenage vampire love story-cum-revenge fantasy takes place in cold
icy Sweden. Young love blooms not long after new neighbour Eli steps up for Oskar against a group
of bullies who has been tormenting him. Little does he know Eli isn’t a normal girl but one whose
unending thirst must be sated with blood that her father/master Hakan collects by killing young men.
This aspect of the relationship is a metaphor for that of a parent’s often imperfect effort to raise a
child. Suitably chilling, Let The Right One In is ghoulish and dismal.
Starring: Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragnar, Ika Nord, Peter Carlberg
MEMORIES…
DO NOT OPEN
THE CHAINSMOKERS
US production duo Alex
Pall and Andrew Taggart
– aka The Chainsmokers
– first shot to fame on
the back of viral single
#Selfie. Considered a
novelty track even by the
pair, their first album
released in 2017 was their
way of demonstrating to
the world they weren’t
just a flash in the pan.
Memories…Do Not
Open is something
of a departure in style, preoccupied with heartaches and breakups. Funk,
wobble synth and sounds you’d usually associate with a peak-time festival are
ingeniously wrought with agonised beats. ‘Break Up Every Night’ and Coldplay
collaboration Something Just Like This are the few stadium-sized dance cuts
of the output. Taggart steps up to the mic, occasionally giving way to female
vocalists including songwriter Emily Warren, The Voice French edition
finalist Louane, and Jhené Aiko.
Our Pick...
KIDS IN LOVE
KYGO
After the release
of Stargazing,
Norwegian
producer Kygo is
back with another
masterpiece.
Unmistakable
in its detailing
despite the
appearance of
many a guest
artist, Kids in
Love is an album
of tropical house
music with eight
tracks, each worthy of being a single in its own right. Vocals
are everything and John Newman’s sumptuous stylings make a
melodic aria of Never Let You Go. The same can be said of JHart’s
Permanent and Jason Walker’s woozily optimistic Sunrise. The
overall effect is one of relaxing vibes and feel-good pop with a
side of EDM sunny-side up.
SKIN
FLUME
Upselling his atmospheric formula, Flume draws from
the talents of multiple artists including Beck, Little
Dragon, Raekwon and Aluna George for his sophomore
album, Skin. In the hands of someone less capable
that would spell disaster, yet the young Australian
DJ/producer pulls off an effort so coherent it bagged
him a Grammy. Rattling future bass and undulating
synths swell into a crescendo of percussive detail over
this melodic 16-track output. The glossy downtempo
pop of Never Be Like You has a well-orchestrated
groove and was the album’s breakout track. It’s not
characteristic of the album, which, despite its slick
crossover aspirations and commercial success, still
retains Flume’s twisted electronic soundscapes.
Album opener Helix sets that pace.
MOTION
CALVIN
HARRIS
It’s not easy
finding
time in
the studio
when
you’re the
highest
paid DJ in
the world,
but Calvin
Harris
manages
to tear himself away from the decks long enough to bust
out his genre-melding fourth studio album, Motion. The
album features commercially driven EDM beats, and
Harris stays true to his pop structured tracks, featuring
A-list artists like Rihanna and Ellie Goulding. Motion is a
crowd pleaser with few surprise elements thrown in – the
skittering steel drum effect in electro-pop track Dollar
Sign comes to mind. Among the standout tracks is We
Found Love, which features some addictive hyperactive
house beats, and Summer, which sees Harris lay down his
own vocals on the album’s best-known single.
DOMINIK FRUTH
Wherever I Lay My Hat
Twenty years in Asia has not fazed this German
one bit. Dominik Fruth is passionate about lifting
Häfele to a different level; a personal ambition to
succeed driven by his love for a challenge.
23 JULY/AUGUST 2018 | TM

DOMINIK FRUTH
When Dominik Fruth made his way to his new
home in Southeast Asia as a teen, little did he
expect a major turnaround in his life, one that
till today, has led to his resounding success as
General Director of Häfele Vietnam, Singapore
and Malaysia. Häfele offers inspirational
kitchen solutions for the family, couple and
single person, encompassing a wide range of
products for storage, cleaning, preparation and
cooking in the kitchen as well as ideas for the living area and
dream wardrobe.
“ My parents, who were teachers, decided to come to Asia for a
holiday,” he says. “ They loved it and decided that they’d live here
some day. So, when the German School in Singapore was looking
for teachers, they applied and got the jobs.”
But Dominik never envisioned himself as being part of their
plan to uproot their lives in Germany and head to Singapore.
“ I wished my parents ‘good luck’ and was told that I would be
joining them!”
At 17, this was a big move for Dominik, who had a firm circle
of friends and an active social life; so it came as no surprise that he
was reluctant. His older sister, who had just joined the Police Force,
wasn’t expected to join the Fruth family on their Asian adventure.
The prospect of moving far away from the life he was
accustomed to was daunting at first. “ I had two sets of friends
with differing opinions,” he divulges. “ I had friends who said
‘Your parents can’t do this! You are old enough and you
don’t have to go.’ Then there was the other set of friends who said
‘What an opportunity! I wish I was in your place!’”
He adds, “ In hindsight, it did turn out to be a great opportunity.”
BUILDING A FUTURE
Being in a new country allowed the young Dominik to forge a sense
of independence. “ Back in Germany I could start earning additional
pocket money by delivering papers or working at the checkout
counter in the supermarket from as young as 11 years old. But in
Singapore that was not allowed, and I needed the extra money.
So, when apprenticeships were offered by German companies in
Singapore, I decided to check them out.”
Mind you, this wasn’t his first choice of a lifelong career. “ I
always wanted to be an air steward as a friend’s uncle was one with
Virgin Airlines. I thought it would be cool to travel the world whilst
you work.”
A career in the airlines was soon scrapped when he realised it
wasn’t all it was cut out to be. Following in his parents’ footsteps
as educators was also not on the cards.
“ I never really like school,” he laughs. “I wasn’t bad at it, but I just
didn’t like the pressure. I could remember stuff easily, but could
forget them just as easily too. Hence, a career in academics was just
not for me.”
So when the opportunity to join an apprenticeship presented
itself, Dominik was game for a change. For Häfele, it was the first
“When the opportunity
to join an apprenticeship
presented itself,
Dominik was game for
a change. For HAäfele,
it was the first time
they participated in the
apprenticeship.”
time they participated in the apprenticeship programme.
Though a German company, Dominik had not heard about the
company before.
“At the interview, I was asked if I knew about Häfele,” he recalls.
“ I said I didn’t. The interviewer whipped out these big catalogues to
show me, and that was when I realised how big a company Häfele
was. I bought into the idea of working with this company.”
After a year of apprenticeship, there was a change in management
and Dominik was offered the post of General Manager.
“ I was more mature than most of the others in the
apprenticeship programme as I had a head start in Germany, and I
was older than most in my class. I would go into class on a Monday
and get all the study instructions for the week from the teachers
and head on to work. I was travelling to Australia and New Zealand
for training.”
Coping with his studies came easily even though his time was
divided between that and work. “ I loved the work so much and
coupled with having to get the grades in, I ensured that I put in
some time into studying. Maturity and work experience as well as
a super supportive school helped with my studies too.”
There was a time when Dominik had to go to Australia for four
months and he was reluctant to tell the school. “ When I told them
I needed the time off, I thought it was going to go downhill from
there. But they gave me their blessings and lent support all the way!”
Dominik recalls the first week he started his apprenticeship,
when the shipping manager went on maternity leave and his boss
asked him to take over the shipping department. Though he didn’t
know how it worked, he stepped up to the challenge.
“ When I came back to school, everyone was comparing notes
on their apprenticeship,” he recalls. “ Some were filing documents
and some had nothing much to do and were just hanging around.
I said ‘I took over the shipping department!’ much to everyone’s
amazement. I was thankful for the opportunities that Hafele
presented though I was inexperienced, it has enabled me to learn.”
DOMINIK FRUTH
Dominik has since been accustomed to being thrown in at
the deep end and on all occasions, have stepped up to
the challenge.
UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
Not one to stay idle, Dominik is always looking for more
challenges to take on. When he completed his apprenticeship
and continued on a full-time employment with Häfele, he
shelved his initial plans to further his studies and asked his
boss about developing the Vietnamese market. “ He relented
in 2003, and told me to go over to Vietnam and develop the
market prospects there.”
Fast forward to 2018, Häfele has come a long way in
establishing its position as a leader in the Southeast Asian
market with businesses running successfully in Singapore,
Vietnam and Malaysia, all of which fall under the steady
management of Dominik Fruth.
“ I put a lot of trust in people,” he explains. “ I engage them
and they are people who want to do the job. I am a strong
advocate of employee engagement and empowerment. Like
how my bosses believed in me enough to empower me to
handle certain aspects of the business, I do the same. If
an employee wants to do the job, I entrust them with it.
I try to inspire them whilst keeping within the management
objectives.”
Dominik believes in mentoring the employees and taking
on a more friendly approach as opposed to being a mean boss.
“After all, that’s how I was managed when I first started and I
reaped the benefits.”
He regards his staff as colleagues, and considers that they
work together rather than them working for him. “ I’m not
afraid to get my hands dirty. I would do things myself and
will do whatever it takes to help out.”
Coming to Malaysia, Dominik felt that the time was
ripe for Häfele to make an impact in the country. “ I saw the
potential, I loved the people we had, and I saw that there was
a lot of drive and passion. We decided to build this big design
showroom, which actually set us back quite a bit because we
were too small to handle it. But in the end, we pulled it off and
it was immensely gratifying when we had the launch party.”
Over in Vietnam, Dominik built a huge showroom,
exhibiting a full range of Häfele designs which gave visibility
to their business, allowing interested parties to touch and feel
their products before purchasing them; a prospect, he believes,
that worked in the company’s favour.
“If an employee wants
to do the job, I entrust
them with it. I try to
inspire them whilst
keeping within the
management objectives.”
“I love to surround
myself with dreamers
and thinkers.”
“ I’m not a documenter,” he reveals. “ I’m a doer. However, I
realised during my career how important it is to put a vision and
mission to things as well as throwing in a few measurables. That
way everyone gets a bit more focussed on the direction we need to
move towards.”
Dominik credits a fellow colleague who manages the Thailand
operations – Faulkner Hachdell – as his inspiration. “ He has
an internal drive like a fire constantly burning in him, and his
unwavering passion for the business is inspiring. I may not totally
agree with some of his management decisions but that drive, well,
that’s something else!”
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Dominik’s work has him travelling quite a bit, and if it weren’t
for his early days in Singapore, much of where he travels to these
days would have been very foreign. Work takes him on frequent
commutes between his home base in Vietnam to Malaysia
and Singapore.
He has settled down with a wife – of Vietnamese descent – and
two children. Yet, it is imperative that his family understands their
German roots.
“ Both my children speak fluent German to me and their
grandparents. They speak fluent Vietnamese to their mother.
But when we are all together, we speak in English. We instil some
German and Vietnamese traditions by celebrating the Lunar New
Year, Christmas and Easter.”
“ It’s been 24 years since I left Germany,” he smiles. “ I’m 41 years
old now and I’ve been away for more than half my life. While I love
Asia, somehow the longer I am abroad, the more I realise where my
roots are and how important it is to me.”
Dominik’s parents have gone back to Germany after their
teaching stint in Singapore came to an end in 2000. Dominik makes
it a point to visit as often as he can, and he doesn’t consider the
distance between them to be detrimental to their relationship and
to their relationship with his children. He speaks about his father
with much admiration.
“ Personally I like to work with people who are different from
me, so that I’m able to learn from them. I love to surround myself
with dreamers and thinkers. My father, well, you can ask him any
history question or date in history and he’ll be able to answer you
at a snap of a finger. He speaks many different languages; all the
things I can’t or don’t know how to do. I admire him for that. But I
don’t aspire to be like him because I know my limits!” he laughs.
While Dominik knows his limits, he is a strong advocate of the
‘can do’ attitude. “After all, I did it,” he says triumphantly. “ I am
still on my first job since I graduated. I have been with Häfele for
20 years and not many people can say that.”
“ I believe that you have to take your fate in your own hands,”
he says. “ You shouldn’t have to wait for people to tell you what to
do. You should anticipate where you want to go and take action;
make it happen.”
Recreational areas where homeowners
now no longer a luxury but a necessity.
Such spaces promote overall health and
a sense of wellbeing and community.
However you don’t need to step outside
to gain the benefits of green bathing.
Regardless of what kind of home you
own or rent, landed or otherwise, it
is possible to bring some of the lush
outdoors, inside.
PLANTS AS AN ID TREND
The use of indoor plants is a reemerging
trend in interior design.
A well-chosen, well-placed piece of
greenery can brighten up an empty
corner or liven up a bookshelf.
Favoured for their shape or colour,
plants can be used ornamentally to
soften a space and add personality,
even to an area already brimming with
objets d’art and collectibles.
No longer restricted to just a single
plant tucked in a forgotten alcove,
maximalism is the order of the day.
Restaurants and bars have taken to
the green trend with gusto. Thanks
to Malaysia’s tropical climate and
humid conditions, ferns – which are
able to tolerate poor light quality – can
thrive indoors and have been used to
wonderful effect in places such as Botak
Liquor on Jalan Petaling, where the use
of abundant plants has created a talkedabout
and frequently photographed
space. Similarly the bright blooms of
phalaenopsis orchids in The Majestic
Hotel’s Orchid Conservatory have
turned this beautiful space into a
dining destination.
Admittedly, plant rentals that make
it their business to green commercial
spaces such as office and retail areas are
well established. Nevertheless, plant
suppliers who curate decorative indoor
plants and offer advice on upkeep are the
new startup trend and are filling a demand
created by trendsetters and hipsters who
have moved on from easy-to-manage
terrariums to full-fledged plants in pots.
Favoured for their ability to grow well
indoors and their interestingly shaped
leaves, among the more sought-after indoor
plants are the Fiddle Leaf Fig (Fidel ficus
lyrata) from Western Africa, and the Swiss
Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa), which
has large, glossy heart-shaped leaves with
distinct perforations.
Just like fashion, there are colour trends
for plants too. They don’t just come as a
single shade of green. Just as you would
mix up textures and colour palettes in
your home, plants come in numerous
colours and can have patterns or variegated
stripes that add interest, particularly when
grouped together.
Other plants have far more distinctive
colouring, like the Rubber Plant (Ficus
elastica) which has attractive round
leathery leaves with a distinct hint
of burgundy. Its combination of rich
colouring and potential for growth makes
it a popular focal piece. Others, like the
flamboyant Calathea with its splashes of
yellow, red, green and white, are best placed
alone, where it can truly shine and show off
its plumage.
THE BENEFITS OF PLANTS
Apart from its obvious aesthetic appeal,
cultivating houseplants has been shown to
have considerable health benefits. Hospital
patients with plants in their room have
been found to recover more quickly than
those who don’t.
As part of its lifecycle, plants absorb
carbon dioxide which we expel, and release
oxygen into the atmosphere, which we
breathe. They also release moisture and
cool down the temperatures of their
environment. In fact, ten percent of the
moisture that we breathe comes from
plants.
In an office environment, plants have
been shown to improve concentration
and productivity. They can dampen noise,
thus minimising sound pollution and
engendering a sense of calm amidst what
may sometimes be a chaotic workplace.
This can in turn reduce work stress.
Homes and offices can also harbour
unhealthy invisible toxins that can
contribute to what is known as sick building
syndrome. This is when occupants of a
building frequently feel unwell. It can
manifest itself as headaches, respiratory
problems, skin irritations and even fatigue,
dizziness and nausea. Even though no
specific cause can be identified, its onset
and duration are linked with the time spent
in the building.
Much of this is attributed to poor indoor
air quality caused by inadequate ventilation
and a lack of fresh air. Air-conditioning
works optimally in a closed space, while in
a high-rise building such as an office tower
opening a window is simply not possible.
Less innocuous are the presence of
contaminants from certain building
materials such as floor laminate, raw
concrete and deteriorating fibre glass. There
are also volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
that are emitted from everyday items such
as furnitur and carpeting, and then theres
mold.
In a study conducted by NASA in
association with the Associated Landscape
Contractors of America called the ‘NASA
Clean Air Study’, it was found that some
indoor plants have the natural ability to
filter harmful chemical agents such as
benzene, formaldehyde and ammonia from
the air that we breathe. The research was
conducted to determine ways of cleaning
air on board space stations. But as with
much space-led research, it had significant
ramifications back on Earth. Science had
proven that plants should be our housemates.
That is not to forget that plants can
also be medicinal and provide sustenance;
aloe vera is used to treat burns; keffir
lime with its fragrant leaves provides a
natural, chemical-free way of deodorising
your home; and a small herb garden in the
kitchen or on the apartment balcony can
supply everyday use ingredients like chilli,
lime, basil, rosemary, dill and local ulam
such as kesom and pegaga.
CARING FOR YOUR PLANTS
Like all living things, plants require
care. It is a responsibility and it can be
disappointing when a plant dies despite
THE HOME
your best efforts. Moreover, replacing a
plant repeatedly can add up financially.
It helps to understand that not all plants
are suited to living indoors. Indoor plants are
generally those that are able to grow in low
light conditions or away from direct sunlight.
With apps like PlantSnap, you can identify
a plant and with some research determine
what kind of care is needed. This applies to
watering and feeding the plant. It is possible
to over- or under-water a plant, and like us
plants require sustenance. Soil also needs
to be aerated and fortified with nutrients
particularly when depleted. This can happen
if a plant has been in a pot for a long time. A
prescribed amount of fertiliser or composting
is usually the answer. A certain amount of
experimentation may be also required to find
the perfect spot for a plant – one that works
for both plant and homeowner.
PLANTS FOR DUMMIES
Sadly not all of us are gifted with green
fingers, and sometimes the amount of
effort we put in is conversely related to the
outcome. Fortunately,
there are some plants that
are next to foolproof.
The go-to plant for
any novice, succulents are
small, self-sufficient and
aren’t going out of style
anytime soon. They require
little water and work best
by a window for heat and
light. They also come in a
variety of colours, shapes
and textures, making them
brilliant architectural
plants that can be
displayed as a collection
or, like the burro’s tail
or lamb’s tail, fly solo
by a window.
Virtually indestructible,
the snake plant, or motherin
law’s tongue (Sansevieria
trifasciata) as it is also
cheekily known, looks
fantastic and cohabitates
best with jet-setting parents
who are only occasionally
around to water it. Besides
its amazing ability to clean
up the surrounding air,
unlike most plants it also
produces oxygen at
night making it ideal for
the bedroom.
Conversely you will also need to consider
the compatibility of your plant with your other
roommates or family members. Some plants
are toxic to pets and children when eaten and
can cause anything from a belly ache to acute
poisoning and even death. So choose wisely or
consider placing these well out of the way
of curious kids and climbing cats.
Finally, one final piece of advice when
purchasing plants. Buy from a reputable
nursery or swap plants with green-fingered
friends. You should avoid purchasing plants
from a roadside seller that also flogs birds’
nests, as these are usually harvested from
the jungle and do not survive well outside
of it. Additionally, removing these plants
can degrade its natural ecosystem.
When deciding on which plant to take
home out of many similar ones, check its
health. It is possible to inherit a sickly
plant so watch out for mealybugs – these
appear as fluffy white clumps along stalks
– and spider mites, which appear as a thin
white web underneath leaves. Good luck
and green speed.
CLEAN AIR MOVEMENT
During the hot and dry season when the
effects of open burning on a large scale are
felt and haze begins to engulf the country,
expensive air purifiers sell themselves.
However, there’s a cheaper and more natural
way of cleaning the air of harmful pollutants
– plants. The NASA Clean Air Study revealed
plants with these special abilities and
recommends at least one of these plants
per 100 square feet of space to rid the air of
toxic elements effectively.
TENBY SCHOOLS MALAYSIA:
AMAZING LEARNING AT
YOUR SCHOOL OF CHOICE -
TENBY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
TROPICANA AMAN
Tenby has been upholding
academic excellence and
Amazing Learning since
1960 and we are now part
of the International Schools
Partnership, a fast-growing,
financially secure and global
schools’ group of 32 schools
around the world with more
than 22,000 students.
We are proud to celebrate
another milestone for the Tenby
Group with the opening of our
seventh campus in September
2018 – Tenby International
School, Tropicana Aman, which
is located within a new township next to Kota Kemuning.
Situated on a 10-acre, purpose-built campus, it is set to provide high
quality international education for parents who aspire to select the best
education for their children. Similar to other Tenby Schools’ campuses,
the teaching and learning in this school will be complemented by
excellent specialised facilities including an artificial turf, swimming pools,
basketball court, badminton courts, and art, drama and music studios.
The appointed Head of School, Ms. Jane Kuok is no stranger to
the international schools’ community. She joined the Tenby Group
in 2008 at Setia Eco Park’s (SEP) inception holding the position of
Principal of Tenby International School. Under her stellar leadership,
the school grew from strength to strength to become one of the most
respected international schools in Klang Valley.
Jane also spearheaded Tenby Schools SEP to achieve worldwide
standards recognition from the Council of International Schools (CIS)
and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), making it
the first school of its type in Malaysia to obtain such accreditations.
From SEP, Jane was promoted to Campus Principal at Tenby Schools
Ipoh Campus where she held the reins for three years. Under Jane’s
leadership, the School is now on its accreditation journey with CIS.
Jane brings to Tenby International School, Tropicana Aman a wealth
of experience in international school accreditation, teacher training,
leading and managing international schools as well as her passion
for educating children for the last 24 years. She will ensure that every
student will have an Amazing Learning experience in this school.
What do you love the most about your job?
Over the years, we have seen so many of our students blossom as
individuals, becoming unique personalities that reflect qualities that
we have termed “Tenbyness”. We have witnessed how they adapted to
different environments and contexts; how they demonstrate confidence
without arrogance; the ability to take risks, showing resilience and
perseverance. Many of our students have graduated from prestigious
universities, including the University of Cambridge, London School of
Economics and Imperial College, London in the United Kingdom. That’s
the best reward for us at Tenby, when we know that we have collectively
laid the foundations for each of our students for life.
Tell us more about learning at Tenby International School.
At Tenby International School, we are learning focused. In our
classrooms, you will see children taking charge of their own
learning. We encourage children to apply the knowledge, skills and
understanding from their lessons into real life and other contexts.
As well as developing the academic side of an individual, we nurture
life skills through giving students exposure to other areas beyond
the classroom. These include providing a learning environment that
embraces local Malaysian culture as well as celebrating international
cultures represented at the school. These may be through residential
trips, excursions, experiences through co-curricular activities, the arts,
sports, music, competitions and community service. Such activities
foster real-life practice for cultivating teamwork, leadership skills and
tools for managing success and failure in preparation for life.
What does it take to be an excellent teacher?
Being a teacher does not end when the children have gone home.
Excellent teachers have a different mind-set. They put their students’
learning first. They willingly give up their own time to prepare their
lessons and provide feedback to students. Our teachers are self-starters,
excellent communicators, organisers and multi-taskers.
What advice would you give parents who wish to enrol their children
into an international school?
Based on research of learning over the last 20 plus years, the ‘traditional’
methods work for passing exams for some students, but not when it
comes to preparing them for tomorrow’s world. Many mistake this type of
school ethos as ‘more academic’ when in reality international schools push
learning to a deeper level where students have to apply their learning in
different contexts.
My advice to parents is to visit the schools under consideration,
understand their philosophy and make a decision based on which school
best suits their children. Parents need to find a school that suits their
children’s needs and has a philosophy in line with their own to allow their
children to learn and flourish, and not just to be “taught” to pass exams.
Do come along to visit us to find out more as there is nothing more
important than choosing the right school for your children.
The enormous but forgotten cereal silo
in the heart of Cape Town’s harbour
was once hailed as Sub-Saharan Africa’s
tallest building. But it has risen from its
figurative ashes over the past four years, and
the gigantic 116 cement silos, whose contents
once fed thousands of people, have been
redesigned for a different purpose - art.
The star British architect Thomas
Heatherwick chose to gut the entire building,
while also designing the atrium to resemble the
inside of a wheat kernel. The museum itself, as
well as rooms dedicated to performances and
cultural education, is housed on 9,500 square
metres.
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary
Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is Africa’s long
overdue answer to New York’s MoMA or
London’s Tate Modern and the international
art scene eagerly awaited its inauguration on
September 22, 2017.
ART AND BUSINESS
“ The role of art collector does not actually quite
suit me,” says Zeitz. Instead, his eye for gaps
in the market, be it in business or art, better
explains his current project.
A growing cultural scene in Cape Town over
the last few years has often resulted in some
of the best art being exported to the Biennales
and museums in Europe or the U.S. “ We
finally want to make it possible for the art to be
available here,” he says.
Zeitz, together with Mark Coetzee, the
director of the MOCAA, started one of the
largest modern art collections on the continent
only nine years ago, buying thousands of works
of art, sometimes entire exhibitions.
Most of the art works were stored in a
depot, as they made plans for the future. “ From
the very beginning, the purpose was to find a
central home for the collection,” says Zeitz.
Criticism regarding this wholesale
approach was, of course, unavoidable. The art
critique Matthew Blackman wrote in 2015
that a museum for African art, furnished by
a German collector, designed by a British
architect and led by a white South African
director does not really have much to do with
South Africa any longer.
Zeitz doesn’t dispute the spirit of such
criticism but highlights the many positive
real-life reactions to the museum, particular
from artists themselves. The collection will be
available to the museum for the duration of
his lifetime or until 2037, whichever comes
first. In addition to this, Zeitz also funds the
museum’s educational programmes and new
acquisitions, which has earned him the respect
of the African art scene.
Coetzee is visibly proud of the work put
THE HOME
into the museum and states that the art
works are “ political with every fibre of their
being, with every brush stroke.”
One of these works is to be seen in
a carefully lit room, depicting 197 red
bricks, hung at eye level and suspended
from the ceiling with a distance of 30 to 50
centimetres. Those who walk between the
bricks will notice that the path becomes
narrower and narrower as you go. It is
South African Kendell Geers’ reminder of
the anti-Apartheid fight, when activists
threw bricks from motorway bridges onto
cars of the representatives of the regime.
Another artist, whose work will be
displayed here, joins us for the tour.
34-year-old Nandipha Mntambo from
Swaziland says that “ the institution will
give Africa’s art scene a huge boost.”
Still, she does not spare criticism:
“ Not every art work is related to the
continent and its cultural heritage,”
Mntambo says, adding a dose of skepticism
about Coetzee’s laboriously highlighted
connections of the art to society.
FREEING ART WORKS FROM THE AFRICAN CLICHÉS
The brilliantly designed building itself may
provide the art works with the chance to
free themselves from the African clichés
heaped upon them over the last few years.
The museum budget of 33 million euros
was provided by the Victoria & Alfred
Waterfront, an unprecedented investment
in the African contemporary cultural scene.
But unlike in any major European museum,
you will find that a luxury hotel has been
allocated the space in the upper stories of
the building.
Nonetheless, the atrium remains
the heart and absolute masterpiece of
the museum. Its exciting architecture is
meant to eliminate the paralysing effect of
contemporary art and fulfill Zeitz’s wish
that people from all strata of society will
feel at ease here. But that is not going to be
an easy task to achieve.
Daily admission is 180 rand for adults
and free of charge for all persons under
18 years of age. While this is admittedly
cheaper than tickets to comparable
museums in Europe, it is well beyond the
daily income of most South Africans.
So, visitors with a passport from an
African nation will be granted free entry
on Wednesday mornings between
10am and 1pm and there are countless
other fre entry days listed on the website,
zeitmocaa.museum.
TROPICANA CORPORATION’S 39 TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
30 MAY 2018
Tropicana Corporation held its 39th Annual General Meeting
at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort recently. All resolutions set
out in the Notice of AGM dated 28 April 2017 were voted on by
poll by shareholders of the Company, and the results validated by
Corporate Streets Sdn Bhd, the Independent Scrutineer appointed
by the Company. We’re happy to announce that all resolutions
were approved.
In the week prior to the AGM, the group also announced its
unaudited financial results for the first quarter ended 31 March
2018. Revenue rose 21.2% to RM453 million, with PBT of RM85.4
million. Tropicana’s prudent cost savings initiatives and ability to
align its growth strategies to suit the changing market environment
saw its net profit rise 84.6% to RM52.2 million in the first quarter
of 2018, from RM28.3 million recorded in the corresponding
quarter in Financial Year 2017. This higher revenue recognition
was a result of the high number of progress billings made from its
various signature developments in the Klang Valley, Northern and
Southern regions, which are currently in the advanced stages of
construction works.
Whilst the overall short-term prospects for the industry are
expected to remain challenging, the Group remains positive for
FY2018. As at 31 March 2018 it has delivered total unbilled sales
of RM1.2 billion, anchored by 15 ongoing projects and an existing
landbank of 888.9 acres with a total gross development value of
RM42.1 billion.
The Group expects to further strengthen its financial position
with increased recurring income from its international schools,
namely St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia, GEMS
International School and its latest addition, Tenby International
School in Kota Kemuning, targeted to open for its first intake of
students in September 2018, while W Hotel at Kuala Lumpur City
Centre will commence operations in the second half of the year.
Earnings per share for Q1 2018 stood at 3.17 sen against 1.89
sen recorded previously. The Group also declared a first interim
single-tier dividend of 1.6 sen per share to date.
TROPICANA HEIGHTS GIANT GACHAPON
Klang Valley's first giant Gachapon landed at Tropicana Heights in
Kajang last month. For those who don’t know, Gachapon are a Japanese
phenomenon. Ubiquitously found all over Japan, these colourful coinoperated
capsule machines can dispense surprise gifts at the turn of a dial and
are popular with both kids and adults. Taking the same concept and turning
it up a notch, Tropicana Heights in Kajang was the site of a giant Gachapon
in the shape of a friendly robot. Among the amazing prizes that could be won
included a Mi Band health and fitness tracker, a tablet device and a scooter.
Like a fun fair, guests to Tropicana Heights’ 199-acre urban city could also
help themselves to servings of popcorn, cotton candy and ice cream, adding
to the festivities. Tropicana Heights in Kajang combines convenience with
BRIDGE BUBBLE RUN @ TROPICANA METROPARK SUBANG JAYA
1 JULY 2018
July started out with a bang and lots of bubbles as the mixed development of
Tropicana Metropark became the location for the Bridge Bubble Run. Over
1500 participants clad in colourful tees, some brandishing their own water
guns, gathered at the starting line, geared up to take on the challenge.
Amidst this emerging enclave and self-contained urban setting, an energetic
Zumba warm-up got the crowd raring to go. The 5-kilometre fun run saw
cheerful participants climbing up inflatable walls, sliding down inflatable slides
and hot stepping it through numerous sets of tricky tire steps. The highlight
was the foamy finish when they frolicked near the finish line almost entirely
engulfed in bubbles in the name of good, clean, fun for the whole family.
Participants and their supporters stayed on for the post-run carnival, and took
part in highly anticipated activities, including a lucky draw where winners
took home fantastic prizes including watches, cameras and handphones.
Swinging in
Marrakech
Explore the golfing jewels of North Africa for some memorable rounds.
THE SWING
Rugged mountains, large desert tracts and the lengthy
coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean, plus the Straits of
Gibraltar and the majestic Mediterranean Sea, are what
characterise the Kingdom of Morocco. So, it comes as no
wonder that one of its major cities, Marrakech is home to golf
courses that don’t just make for a picturesque play but also a
challenging one.
Marrakech has rapidly become the new golfer’s destination
and with 300-plus days of sunshine annually, why not? We
present the top five golf courses in Marrakech that offer golf
enthusiasts a good run for their money.
THE ROYAL GOLF OF MARRAKECH
Inaugurated in 1927, The Royal Golf of Marrakech is one of
the most ancient golf courses of the Kingdom and is a frequent
haunt of King Mohammad IV, one of Morocco’s keenest golfers.
It is situated at the feet of the snow-covered Atlas Mountains.
Level terrain provides for an easy walk through the 100-yearold
vegetation, comprising more than 15,000 trees such as
eucalyptus, palm trees, olive trees and orange trees. While each
hole remains an unforgettable experience, its most famous is
nicknamed Brigitte Bardot because of its beautiful shape.
The Royal Golf Of Marrakech is a unique course made
of a historical 18-hole “ Old Course” (par 72 of 5,937 metres)
inaugurated in 1933 and a 9-hole “ Menara” (par 36 of 3,072
metres) opened in 2008, which was designed by French
European Senior Tour player Gerry Watine. The original 18
is an “English style” course with strategically placed bunkers
protecting its greens and tall testing trees and palms whilst the
Menara features only lakes.
A veritable Garden of Eden, the Royal Golf of Marrakech
has been attracting players from all over the world for 80 years.
Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and Ike Eisenhower
have enjoyed playing here.
PALMGOLF MARRAKECH-OURIKA
This 18-hole golf course is the newest and by far the toughest
course in Marrakech. It combines performance and pleasure
with stunning views of the Atlas Mountains’ snowy peaks and
is surrounded by olive and palm trees. Managed by Troon Golf,
PalmGolf offers fantastic practice facilities as well as exemplary
service on a course designed by Canadians Neil Haworth and
Stephane Talbot, who conducted extensive research on the best
varieties of grass to use.
The course is riddled with many holes that have long carries
over extensive waste areas; adding to the challenge are narrow
fairways running around deep lakes. It extends over 6,692
metres and is Par-72. This course is the first ‘buggy only’ course
in Morocco, and each cart has a modern GPS system which helps
golfers on their club selection and strategy as well as offers the
ability to monitor speed of play for all. Full concrete paths were
built throughout the course offering all-year round play.
The course is well maintained, with somewhat dry fairways
and six lakes to add variation to its desert concept. There are
a lot of holes that make good use of the water element. The
signature hole is the Par-3 17th, which is an elevated island green
surrounded by a sea of sand which adds to the difficulty factor.
ASSOUFID GOLF COURSE
THE SWING
ASSOUFID GOLF COURSE
Voted the “ Best New Course in Africa” barely half a year after it
opened, Assoufid does not disappoint. Every hole is designed to test and
entertain in equal measure. Stretched across an open desert, the course
presents a remarkable portrait with hundreds of palm and olive trees
and unhindered views of the Atlas Mountains as a stunning backdrop.
Situated close to the vibrant Red City of Marrakech, this desert-style
6,440 metre, par-72 golf course is the debut design of Niall Cameron,
former European Tour player. The eco-friendly course design is
integrated into the existing landscape, allowing the site’s indigenous
flora and fauna to thrive whilst minimising water consumption.
The par four 5th is one of the toughest holes – it is played from an
elevated tee, and the fairway is flanked by desert as it rises towards the
Atlas Mountains. The tee on the par three 17th is located on the highest
point, and offers panoramic views of all the holes in the back nine.
The Golf Club features a driving range and a practice putting and
chipping green as well as golfer-dedicated services including bag drop,
caddies and equipment hire. A real treat for golfers, Assoufid Golf Club
combines visual pleasure with joys of the game while revealing the
perfect curves of an 18-hole course that will not disappoint.
THE SWING
“Built against the breathtaking
backdrop of the snowcapped
Atlas Mountains, SAMANAH GOLF
& COUNTRY CLUB is one of the
more popular courses
in Marrakech. ”
AMELKIS GOLF CLUB
Designed by Cabell B. Robinson and named after a Berber queen,
this famous 27-hole course sits at the foot of the Atlas Mountain.
Originally 18 holes, the popular course saw an additional 9 holes
being built, to offer guests three loops – Red, Blue and Green –
over a sprawling 450 hectares with visually stunning aesthetics
and holes amongst luxurious riads, lakes and palm trees. A superb
test of the game, the Amelkis development is a walled enclave just
outside the city and is hailed one of the finest in the region.
The course in itself is technical and challenging. Its hilly
terrain offers bumps, blind starts, pitfalls to each hole and huge
bunkers on every green. In keeping with an American course,
there are vast fairways coupled with red ground pits that signify
its natural beauty and originality of this route.
Hole 2 sets the tone early on in the game, with lakes and water
hazards dotted around. The back nine holes at Amelkis Golf
Club are dominated by even more water hazards, such as at the
447-metre 15th. The golfer will have to avoid many bunkers,
crushed bricks, tackle mounds of soil or venture into the blind
departures that add to the overall golfing experience.
The four tough holes feature from the 4 th to the 7 th on the
9-hole Blue Loop with each of these par fours measuring in excess
of 400 yards from tee to green.
AMELKIS GOLF CLUB
SAMANAH GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Samanah is the first of the famed golf
design company’s courses in Morocco and lies in the heart of the
developing ‘Marrakech Golf City’. The golf course has clinched
top honours in golf development and has been recognised as the
Best Golf Resort in the Arab region.
Built against the breathtaking backdrop of the snowcapped
Atlas Mountains, it is one of the more popular courses in
Marrakech. The design bears trademark Nicklaus features in
terms of length and the large bunkers alongside big waste areas
with stubby palms and grasses. The course is long from the back
tees (so best to choose your starting points wisely), flat, generous
and expansive with white sand bunkers. Golfers will notice that
the greens are fast but the ball will hold well, and the dry fairways
give the ball good distance if kept in play. Nevertheless, there are
water hazards that create a challenge.
At Samanah, there’s also a David Leadbetter Golf Academy for
a quick fix before getting back on the fairways in swinging form.
the 185th anniversary of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture, the brand
organised an exhibition – to honour the history of the esteemed Swiss
creativity of film directors who have made breakthroughs in
Chinese cinematics.
After eight years of partnership with the festival, for the very first
Rénier, CEO of Jaeger-LeCoultre. This year, the award honouring
filmmakers who have brought outstanding innovation to filmmaking
went to talented actress and director Joan Chen. Among the glittering
stars that attended were Jing Boran, Ni Ni and other friends of the
brand who illuminated the festival.
Jaeger-LeCoultre also hosted a charity auction and donated a unique
Rendez-Vous Night & Day Tribute to Cinema timepiece. Made by the
watchmakers of the Vallée de Joux, the auction piece is a one-of-a-kind
When it presented its first square diving watch in 2017,
Bell & Ross confirmed its ability to produce professional
underwater instruments. The BR03-92 Diver made a strong
impression on the diving world and became the starting
point of an entire collection, which is now expanding to
include two new versions, the BR03-92 Diver Blue and the
BR03-92 Diver Bronze.
Given their military associations and dedication to
aeronautics, the navy or special units and bomb disposal
experts, Bell & Ross watches have always met the strictest
requirements and are designed in accordance with its own,
often extreme, environment.
Issued as a limited edition of 999 pieces, BR03-92 Diver
Bronze alludes to the origins of underwater adventures with
its bronze case and bezel, and an engraving of a diver on the
case-back. Bronze was used in the past for diving helmets,
and while the aged leather strap
confirms the watch’s authentic
vintage spirit, it can be replaced
with a rubber strap for diving.
Symbolising the sea, the
BR03-92 Diver Blue – with
its blue dial, rubber strap and
aluminum insert on the bezel
– achieves maximum legibility
with indices coated in White
SuperLuminova® and a yellow
emblematic square shape of
the BR collections, the BR03-
A WORLD OF WELLNESS
| HEALTH
Had a bad day at work?
Feeling tired and
rundown? You don’t
always need a two-week
vacation to rejuvenate your
flagging spirit. A spa treatment
or a massage can be a quick and
effective way to aid what ails
the body and mind. Practised in
various forms across different
cultures, traditional treatments
in particular have been called
upon for centuries, and in many
cases continue to be practised.
No longer exotic, many of these
unique treatments have been
embraced by practitioners
across the world. So if you find
yourself in need of some ‘me’
time to relax, recharge and
reflect, consider these tried and
tested rituals.
A World of
Wellness
Different cultures practise different forms of traditional
treatments. We explore some of them and feel all the better for it.
Turkish Hamam
A form of public bath, the
Turkish Hamam is often
located close to the mosque in
order to serve the community.
Involving a three-step
process, bathers first unwind
in a hot steam room where
temperatures rise to 100°C.
This is meant to relax the
muscles, relieve tension
and naturally alleviate
pain. Immersed in the heat,
the body’s natural cooling
mechanism of sweating kicks
in, clearing pores of dirt and
dust. After a rinse, the bather is
given a thorough scrubbing. It
can be a little bit uncomfortable
as skin that is dead and dirty is
sloughed off. A massage follows,
after which the bather retires
to a cool room to rest. Often
ornate places, this is a nice time
to enjoy the surrounding as
Turkish Hamam are typically
beautifully designed and
ornately decorated. Exported
globally, the hamam spa
concept has been adapted and
developed to include a variation
of spa treatments.
HEALTH | A WORLD OF WELLNESS
Keralan Pizhichil
Kerala is well known for its
holistic Ayurvedic practises.
Originating from the South
Indian state, Pizhichil,
sometimes referred as
Sarvangadhara, is a full body
massage treatment that uses
warmed-up herbal medicated
oil in a synchronised massage
administered by two to four
trained therapists. The head is
avoided but hands and cotton
cloths are used to rub in the
oils and stimulate the skin.
Historically enjoyed by royalty
and other upper echelons of
Keralan society, those who have
undergone this rejuvenating
massage have claimed to benefit
from improved muscle tone
and nourished nerve tissues,
and gained relief from digestive
disorders, depression, stress,
and even skin infections. Best
experienced on a regular basis,
Pizhichil is also supposed
to improve sleep patterns,
something we could all do with
more of.
Javanese Lulur
Ever heard of a body scrub
containing turmeric, pandan
leaves, yoghurt and rice
powder? Other than being used
in cooking, these ingredients
are the main elements in
traditional Javanese Lulur.
A practice that originated in
the royal palaces of Central
Java, lulur is the practice of
body exfoliation using paste
that is applied to the skin like
a masque, left to dry and then
vigorously rubbed off like a
scrub. Traditionally practised
by brides-to-be in the palace as
a pre-wedding ritual that takes
place over 40 consecutive days,
lulur is meant to leave the skin
refreshed and reinvigorated.
Each of the ingredients plays a
part – tumeric as an age-defying
antioxidant, rice powder as a
scrub, and yoghurt as a light
acid peel. Used together, the
practise removes dead skin to
reveal soft glowing skin below.
Balinese Boreh
Wander the markets of Bali and you
may just come across a type of jamu
or traditional medicine called Boreh.
Heavily influenced by Ayurvedic
medicine, this fragrant concoction of
herbs and spices was first used by rice
farmers to relieve themselves from the
onset of achy joints and muscles after
a hard day toiling in the fields. Turned
into an aromatic powder by pounding
together ingredients likes cloves,
ginger, cinnamon, rice, turmeric and
nutmeg, water was added to form a
paste that was then slathered all over
the body. The mixture had a thermal
affect that would keep them warm
at night. Scrubbed off in the river
the following morning, the mixture
would jolt awake the circulation and
had the unintended effect of being an
insect repellent. Today, this centuriesold
healing recipe is used as part of a
traditional spa treatment to improve
blood flow, clear the pores, refine skin
and promote enhanced energy.
Thai Massage
Thailand has become synonymous
with the art of massage, and no visit
to our neighbouring country would
be complete without indulging in
an hour or two of this thoroughly
relaxing practice. Purported to have
been founded 2,500 years ago by the
Buddha’s own physician, it combines
the use of acupressure, Ayurvedic
practices and yoga stretches. Distinct
from other kinds of massage, the
Thai version forgoes the use of oils
and sticky ointments. While wearing
loose-fitted clothing, your entire body
is worked by the therapist using his
or her hands, knees, legs and feet,
and your joints, limbs and muscles
are kneaded, stretched, pulled and
contorted using gentle and deeper
techniques to help you release
tension and open the flow of energy
and vitality through your body. The
overall effect is to leave you feeling
stretched and supple. It’s a matter
not to be taken lightly; regulated by
Thailand’s Ministry of Health, 800
hours of training is required to be a
traditional Thai massage practitioner
and less than 1,000 massage centres
are actually certified by this
government department.
Finnish Sauna
A Finnish practice, the sauna has
become so ubiquitous that you’ll find
it in most health spas, sports clubs and
gyms. Dating as far back as 7,000 BC,
the practice involves sitting in a wooden
shed warmed to 80°C by hot stones that
have been heated using a special stove;
water is thrown on the stones to produce
steam. The practice is so ingrained in
Finnish culture that there is one sauna
for every Finnish household. Commonly
practised communally with the family, a
weekly visit to the sauna is as much about
mental relaxation as it is physical. In
Finland it is preceded by a cleansing bath
or shower and involves swatting yourself
lightly all over the skin with a bunch of
silver birch, which is purported to relax
muscles and calm the skin. A jump into
a cool shower or pool is followed, after
which the process is repeated.
THE COOKBOOK
In Pursuit of
Tradition
and Flavour
With its production of artisanal Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and
Parma ham, it’s little wonder Parma has been designated a
UNESCO City of Gastronomy and Emilia-Romagna Italy's food valley.
THE COOKBOOK
There is no such thing as spaghetti
Bolognese. No, the dish you've
rustled up for dinner a thousand
times or plucked from the menu
of a high-street Italian restaurant is a
fabrication. An abomination, even.
Go on, I dare you. Try to order 'spag bol'
in any Emilia-Romagnan restaurant
and see what happens...
You will likely be told through
gritted teeth that spaghetti Bolognese
is an American invention, a corruption
of the dish, which should always be
made with fresh tagliatelle.
Semolina-based spaghetti just
cannot hold ragu – the authentic name
for the meat sauce known worldwide as
Bolognese, which so readily soaks into
freshly made egg-and-flour pasta.
In Emilia-Romagna, also known
as Italy's food valley, such distinctions
are very important. So dedicated to
cuisine are the people of a northern
region blessed with a humid subtropical
climate, that their excellence in
food standards was recognised by the
Michelin Guide.
The unveiling of the Italian edition
of the red book, detailing the best places
to both eat and sleep, was shifted from
its long-term base in Milan to Parma, a
city with only two starred restaurants.
So why this provincial outpost?
Designated a UNESCO City of
Gastronomy at the end of 2015,
over 30%of its working population
are involved in the production and
serving of food. It is the gastronomical
capital of the food valley and arguably
of the northern half of the country.
And what better way to showcase the
craftsmanship and taste of the province
than by hosting a lavish Michelin
ceremony at the stunning
Teatro Regio opera house.
A 1,400-seater auditorium that
normally hosts tributes to Parma's
musical sons Verdi and Toscanini,
saw, in mid-November last year, the
cream of Italy's chefs rewarded for their
culinary endeavours. But conspicuously
absent from the stage were the unsung
heroes – the producers who churn
milk into Parmigiano-Reggiano
(better known as Parmesan) or salt the
haunches that will become prosciutto.
The valley's many food producers may
work independently as businesses, but
they are united in their commitment to
preserving tradition and flavour.
THE COOKBOOK
The day before the Michelin event, I tour the
Galloni factory in Langhirano, 12 miles south of Parma,
and observe the exacting application of sea salt and
seasoning which delivers mouthwatering Parma ham to
the top tables. (Tours can be booked through the local
tourist office.)
Federico Galloni calls his army of workers 'salatori',
or salty men; they scrutinise the ham hocks before
smothering them in salt and hanging them up to dry
for months.
A convivial man wearing an elegant cardigan under
his white lab coat, Federico is a grandson of one of the
five brothers who established the business in 1960.
Today, they can produce 300,000 cured hams every year.
Federico says it could produce five times that amount
if he chose to switch to a fully automated production
line, but he instead keeps faith with the serious salty
men, who do not smile at gawping visitors as they are too
engrossed in their time-honoured handiwork.
In the ominous-sounding ham chamber, we marvel
at the 'spiking' process, conducted with a horse's shin
bone to assess the odour of the prosciutto. The best legs
are awarded the famous five-pointed crown stamp of
Parma ham. A tasting session is soundtracked by Verdi
in a dedicated sampling room where we wash down the
luscious ham with lightly sparkling pignoletto wine.
“So dedicated to cuisine are the people of a northern
region blessed with a humid subtropical climate,
that their excellence in food standards was this
year recognised by the Michelin Guide.”
By the morning, I'm peckish again and ready to see
how those swine develop such succulent hind meat.
The answer? They are fed on natural whey, a byproduct
of creating Parmesan.
Those wanting to discover how the fine cheese
gets from the farm to that famous little dish with its
tiny spoon, can get up with the cows and witness the
transformation first hand.
Only 15 minutes from Parma's historic city centre
lies the Consorzio Produttori Latte Societa Agricola
Cooperativa dairy in Baganzolino, where on weekday
mornings, the fabled master cheesemaker – a celebrity
in these parts – leads free one-hour tours.
It may look like milk upon milk to the layman, but
the specifics of the craft separate mediocre Parmesan
from truly great Parmesan, with the latter deserving
of its own firebrand on the rind.
And don't forget to buy a big lump of cheese as you
leave – I recommend the 28- month-aged batch.
Heading back to civilisation, we pass the imposing
Barilla plant at Pedrignano, built in 1969, where more
than 93,000 miles of spaghetti roll off the conveyor
belts each day.
A world away from those endlessly clanking
machines is the small restaurant and workshop
supervised by former office colleagues Simona and Rita.
Their dissatisfaction with the daily grind inspired them
to quit their jobs and go back to basics, making tagliatelle
and tortellini from scratch.
At their 'Uova e Farina' – egg and flour – cookery
school, small groups can learn how to create sheets of
fresh pasta, before making, with some difficulty,
the tiny parcels that become their lunch.
On the night before the much-vaunted gala dinner,
we go traditional at the aptly-named Ristorante
La Forchetta – the fork – in the shadow of the city's
11th-century cathedral.
The table talk is, initially, about what delicacies there
might be on the big night. Chatter ceases when plates of
Prosciutto di Parma and Parmesan arrive, followed by
ricotta-stuffed tortellini and ragu-coated tagliatelle,
with the sophistication of flavour telling its own story.
And not a bowl of spaghetti Bolognese in sight.
GO GREEN
The Botanist, Islay’s one and only dry gin finally officially launches in Malaysia.
WORDS BY GRACE LAI
Islay is a land of mystery; of shimmering greens and
brilliant blues the colour of cloudless, summer skies.
This tiny island houses only over 3,000 inhabitants;
but within its glorious land sits some of the the
world’s best and active whisky distilleries. From the east
to the west you will find the peaty Ardbeg, Lagavulin
and Laphroaig; and on the north of the island, Bowmore,
Bruichladdich, Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain, which are
substantially lighter in taste.
Back in 1999, celebrated drinks journalist Dave
Broom sat with (just as celebrated) Jim McEwan,
Bruichladdich’s former Master Distiller of the
Progressive Hebridean Distillers. “I recall sitting on the
shores of Loch Indaal with him in 1999, looking across to
Bruichladdich [then closed]”. “I’d love for that distillery
to reopen,” McEwan said. “It’s a disgrace that it’s closed.”
It hurt him as a whisky man and as an Ileach.
Today, the restored distillery is one of the largest
employers on Islay, forging new links with farmers
and harnessing Islay’s unique flora to create and infuse
another type of spirit – gin. The unprecedented result is
a combination of a master Islay distiller's know-how and
its locally foraged botanicals. Twenty-two to be specific.
With The Botanist, if you remember no other
numbers, know just these – 22, nine and 46. Botanicals
are the very essence of gin; its raison d'etre you may
say, and The Botanist gin – with a 46% ABV – is created
from nine core, traditional gin botanicals and 22 local
Islay botanicals, all hand-picked and foraged by local
botanists, Dr. Richard and Mavis Gulliver.
not a newcomer in the rarefied world of spirits; but what
was once known only for its medicinal purposes is now
the drink of choice. From Bogart to Churchill, gin is and
always will be classy and rewarding. As someone once
said, gin has got all the potency of absinthe without the
regret of the Fireball.
Connoisseurs will agree that there is a marked
difference between drinking gin and tasting it. To begin
with, gin is rarely ever drunk neat, as, for the most part,
it is not that palatable without a mixer – in most of our
opinions, but to each his own. However, tasting gin neat
is hugely important for developing one’s gin palate and
learning more about what you are drinking. Mixers,
especially tonic, will mask some of the botanical’s
flavours as well as cut the harshness and alcohol notes.
While the latter is desirable, the former reduces the
flavour of the gin, so it is key to work out what ratio of
mixer you should add to your gin.
To properly induct us into its embrace, The Botanist
brand ferried a privileged lot of us to A Little Farm
on the Hill for an afternoon of fun and folly (no folly
ensued). There, in a charming kitchen setting, filmy
organza curtains ruffled in the wind, macaques called
and birds chirped to us while we studied the organic and
local-to-Malaysian-soil plants growing abundantly on
the fertile earth.
Caressing the leaves of the fragrant basil, spicy mint
and woodsy juniper, we were allowed to pick two plants of
choice for the makings of our own gin; the objective being
to immerse ourselves in the experience and care it takes in
the pursuit of The Botanist’s hand-foraged ingredients.
“Malaysia used to be a haven for foraging with its
abundance of natural herbs and spices – frequently
used for Chinese medicines. While that is not popular
in our day and age [yet], I do hope that The Botanist
coming to Malaysia will inspire its local bartenders and
consumers towards sourcing for local ingredients and
being creative with the way they garnish and serve their
drinks. We really want The Botanist to encourage you to
go out there and explore your surroundings!” enthused
Chloe Wood, the Asia Pacific Brand Ambassador for The
Botanist. Petite with an abundance of energy radiant on
her face, Wood is an Islay native herself, now based with
the eminent brand in Singapore.
From the hand-foraged 22 and nine core botanicals,
followed by an achingly-slow 17-hour distillation, the
result is a highly distinctive, complex and floral gin
with an outstanding finish and impeccable provenance.
Incredible care is exercised in its distillation process as
the precious botanicals are slowly and gently coaxed into
releasing their multifaceted, signature aromatics in
The Botanist’s unique and cherished Lomond pot-still.
The layered complexity of the drink comes to life,
more with each gentle sip of this refreshing delight. In
an age of re-badged industrial gins, The Botanist stands
out as a truly artisanal, small-batch, hand-crafted labour
of love and distiller’s art. A breath of botanical Islay in
every glass. Nothing fresher than that, is there?
The Botanist is now available at selected
establishments throughout the city.
THE GAME CHANGER
Burlesque goddess Dita Von Teese discusses everything from
her captivating appearance and stage performances to her thoughts
about femininity, motherhood and feminism.
WORDS BY ALLISON KUGEL / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE
IMAGES BY GETTY IMAGES
Born out of a time capsule from Hollywood’s golden era, glamour
girl and burlesque goddess, Dita Von Teese has been captivating
imaginations around the world since she burst onto the scene in
the early 2000s, first on the cover of Playboy magazine, and
then draped on the arm of controversial rocker, Marilyn Manson.
Since then, Dita has carved out an iconic reputation for herself as
the most famous and sought-after burlesque performer in the world.
Vanity Fair has dubbed her a “ Burlesque Superheroine” and Elle has
declared her an “all around icon.”
The raven haired, fair skinned, hourglass shaped glamour girl who
never leaves home without the perfect red lip and vintage sunglasses,
Von Teese travels the globe performing burlesque shows that pay
homage to the vintage artform, but with a modern interpretation.
She performs to sell-out crowds and mesmerises with costumes
perfectly adorned with breathtaking crystals, and over-the-top stage
props and accessories placed just so, including her signature martini
glass bubble bath routine. Incidentally, the crowds are packed with
Von Teese’s millions of female fans who draw inspiration from her
old world, finely crafted sensuality.
THE GAME CHANGER
How do you define femininity?
I grew up admiring movie stars of the 1940s and 1950s.
To me, that was always the epitome of feminine, and
it made a mark on me from a very young age. I guess I
have always associated that exaggerated femininity with
the definition of feminine; the way a woman enhances
herself with the tools in the beauty box, so to speak. I’ve
always thought of glamour as feminine. That’s what I
love for the outwardly feminine. On the other hand, I
have a different closed door feminine as well, where I
can remove those layers and get to the essence of what
we are trying to exaggerate with the hair and makeup
and the high heels and all the things we do to be hyper
feminine in public.
Your birth name is Heather Sweet and you're a
natural blonde. Why the change to brunette and
the name change to Dita Von Teese?
I started becoming Dita when I was about 19 years old, so
I wasn’t really thinking it through. I didn’t think about
long term, and I certainly never expected to become
famous for being a burlesque dancer and pinup model.
It started as a hobby that I was doing, and in my little
mind I thought by the time I was 30 I would be finished.
And at the time, I was looking to Gypsy Rose Lee and
Lili St. Cyr, and these [burlesque] stars from the past.
These were choices I made when I was younger, and yes,
I always liked the idea of that big Hollywood makeover.
Rita Hayworth’s name was not Rita Hayworth, and Rita
Hayworth had black hair and a widow’s peak that got
removed with electrolysis. There was that big Hollywood
machine, and I was always fascinated with the idea of
these raw beauties becoming transformed into Birds
of Paradise.
In watching you perform, you truly look like you've
stepped out of a time machine from the 1940s and
1950s. Are you comfortable living in this time period?
I’m not living in another time. A lot of my clothes are
modern, and I think about a lot of the modern things
I do, such as updating my apps. I love so many things
about modern technology. Although, I do have a huge
collection of vintage clothing. There was a time in my
“I was always fascinated
with the idea of these
raw beauties becoming
transformed into
Birds of Paradise.”
life when I only wore vintage lingerie, I only drove my
vintage car, I only wore clothes from the 1940s, but
I’ve kind of evolved from that. The burlesque shows we
produce are much different than a show you would have
seen in the 1940s. We’re trying to capture the essence
of those times, but the whole point is to evolve into
something much different than it ever was; to evolve the
history of burlesque. I never want anyone to think that
I’m living in the past. You can look at the past and get
inspiration from it, but it can end up being dusty and
irrelevant if you don’t find ways to make it something
that no one’s ever seen before.
I do love to sit down with some of my favorite
glamour girls of the past. I’m quite good friends with
Mamie Van Doren who was a big 1950s bombshell and is
still around to tell her stories. And I’m friends with Julie
Newmar who, of course, was a great dancer and actress. I
love to ask them about the past, and I love getting advice
from them about the times we are living in and how to
navigate being a glamour girl in modern times.
Would you ever consider sacrificing your brand and
hourglass figure to become pregnant?
There are a few choices that I have made, like making a
conscious decision not to have children, because I think
it may be a good moment in time for some people to step
away from that idea of feeling that it’s required. I think
it’s a conscientious choice for modern times, because of
over population. Throughout my life I always felt like I
was going to quit [burlesque] and have a child, because
I always thought I wanted them. More recently I have
given thought to the unsustainable population growth
and global climate change. Do I think it’s fascinating
when women tell me that the most important and
wonderful job they’ll ever do is raising a child? Yes. Then
I think, “ Oh wow, that’s interesting. I guess I won’t know
what that’s like.” This is such a personal thing to ask a
woman about, because what if I couldn’t have children?
That’s not the case, but it’s such a personal topic.
THE GAME CHANGER
In your current show "Dita Von
Teese and The Copper Coupe
Tour" you have another model
on stage with you, Gia Genevieve.
What inspired you to cast her in your show?
I had always wanted to have a blonde bombshell
in the show. I had a hard time finding this kind of
quintessential “ Playboy ” blonde. I met Gia a few times
over the years and she always had this effervescence, and
she was sexy and fun. I knew she wasn’t a dancer, but I
wondered if I could teach her how to do my bubble bath
act, simplify it and have her get her personality across
on stage. She’s a lot of fun to watch and she’s the perfect
example of you don’t have to be dancing all over the
place and doing backflips on stage to be
wildly entertaining.
Tell me about your collaboration with Absolut
Elyx for the "Dita Von Teese and The Copper
Coupe Tour".
Being famous for bathing in a giant cocktail glass, I was
open to a partnership with a cocktail company. I loved
the ideas that Elyx had. They were just about beautiful,
whimsical imagery that’s a tribute to what they do with
their copper distillery. I was very familiar with their
brand and loved the idea of making these tributes in the
show to their imagery. I took a giant shell and dipped
it in their signature copper. And I made a cocktail glass
that’s a tribute to their style. We had a lot of fun creating
the show and bringing it all together.
What other imagery onstage will reflect this tour's
name, The Copper Coupe?
With every tour, I’ve redone a version of my martini
glass act. I have a six-piece set of gigantic glasses at this
point. I could have a giant cocktail party! I’m always
thinking, “ How can I one up that number and make it
fresh and new?” For this tour, one of the most exciting
parts is the costume. I collaborated with my longtime
creative partner, Catherine D’Lish, we put our heads
together and came up with the most extravagant
costume we’ve ever done, to date. A big part of making
the show was this gown. I can’t tell because I’m wearing
it on stage, but from what people are telling me it lights
up the entire room.
“I always felt like I was going to
quit and have a child, because I
always thought I wanted them. More
recently I have given thought to the
unsustainable population growth
and global climate change.”
You're the Swarovski Queen. I'm assuming
everything is crystallised….
Everything is crystallised on this costume. We haven’t
weighed it yet, but I keep asking to. It’s completely
covered, and we’re using a new version of their aurora
borealis stone. They’re cut like diamonds, and the
effect is mind-boggling. People have been asking if my
costume is electrified or plugged in. It’s really something
to see under the lights.
You've been quoted as saying that burlesque is a
new kind of feminism. How so?
It’s become that for a lot of women. The feminist
movement must be respectful of other women’s ideals
of what it is, and what it means. More than ever, we as
women have to respect each other’s choices. Like I always
say, and this is the truth, my audience is mainly female.
My social media following is about 85 percent female.
When I started in the 1990s I had a lot of male fans, and
when I was a Playboy model I had a lot of male fans. It
shifted in the early 2000s when I came out with a book
and told my story about why I loved pinup, why I loved
burlesque, and what it meant to me to have that to
look to for my beauty icons. That resonated with
a lot of people and I could feel that was when it all
started to shift, when I exhibited my vulnerability about
why I love this. I like to say that it’s an alternative
feminist movement.
What do you say to women who cry out that
burlesque is an objectification?
Something that could have, in the past, been considered
degrading to women, I think that idea has been turned
upside down when my audience is mainly female.
They’re getting inspiration from this and feeling like
they can harness their own sensual power in a different
way and be in control of it. I would never say that
striptease and burlesque should be for everyone. I have
always loved things that walk that fine line, where one
person looking at it thinks it’s inspiring and magical,
and another person thinks it’s dirty and bad. It’s
interesting to me the way people see things. I find things
that are polarising to be interesting.
109 JULY/AUGUST 2018 | TM

THE GAME CHANGER
Do you think femininity and feminism can
peacefully co-exist in the #MeToo era? And have you
found yourself in the crosshairs of a certain segment
within this current feminist movement that doesn't
agree with your idea of feminism?
Yes. But for me, I have always understood feminism to
be about having choices. I don’t see how you can put
rules on that, especially now. Whatever you do, there’s
always going to be someone who criticises it. I think
more than ever it’s about sticking close to people who
share your beliefs. You try to understand other people’s
point of view, but you don’t have to take it for your own
or feel like someone is pointing a finger at you. We have
to stop pointing fingers at other people.
You perform your shows all over the world. What
are the differences in how burlesque is received in
the U.S. versus in other countries?
What’s interesting is that the striptease-style burlesque
was invented in America, and it was thriving here in
the 1930s and 1940s. That’s the funniest part about all
of this. I had to go to France, England, Germany and
Australia to get that big mainstream acceptance at first.
I performed a lot in the UK during the early part of my
career and I would do mainstream television shows over
there. I could talk about what I was doing there, and I
could go to France and do my show on television. They
could show the pasties and the G-string, and it was fine
with everyone.
In the U.S. there's this strange sensibility where
it's okay to promote a film with a lot of violence,
but it's not okay to put overt sensuality into
the mainstream.
It’s not just sensuality, but decisive sensuality. That’s one
of the things people have a problem with. If I had made a
sex tape and I said, “ Oh, I’m sorry I did that,” it would be
more acceptable. As compared to me deciding to present
striptease and eroticism and do it in this way, because it’s
decisive. It’s not “ accidental.” I often think of that. Am
I inspiring other women to embrace their sensuality in
a way that they’re not apologising for, and is that what
upsets people?
You brought burlesque to the forefront during a
time when it wasn't part of the mainstream pop
culture vortex. What do you advise for other
creative pioneers?
I think I had it better in some ways back then. I feel
lucky that I didn’t have the Internet to influence me
when I started. I had to use my imagination. I didn’t
have anyone to watch, except ladies from the past. There
wasn’t YouTube. I had to really forge my own path and
“The feminist movement
must be respectful of other
women’s ideals of what it is,
and what it means. More than
ever, we as women have to
respect each other’s choices.”
I’m grateful for that. I think one of the things getting
in people’s way now is the feeling that everything has
already been done, because they’re scrolling through
Instagram. Or they’ll look through social media and
just copy what other people are doing. They don’t have
to rely on their imagination. I didn’t have others to
measure myself up against. I’m not saying you shouldn’t
be inspired by other people, and even if it appears that
everything has been done before, there are ways of
making it better or making it different.
The moral of the story is, there is going to be some
ridicule either way, so why not forge your own path?
For #oldheadshotday, I posted my early headshot on
Instagram and someone commented, “ But your [eye]
brows don’t look good.” I was like, “ Listen. I was 19
years old and I didn’t have a 400-page book about retro
glamour called “ Your Beauty Mark” [Von Teese’s
beauty how-to book/Dey Street Books] to look at yet! I
had to make all the mistakes so that I could tell you all
the short cuts.” There are always people who must come
first and experiment and make those mistakes in order
for other people to pick up that knowledge. I certainly
did that with burlesque queens of the past, looking at
their pictures and thinking about how I could do it in my
own way.
For people who have yet to go to see a burlesque
show, what will the experience be like to attend
one of your shows?
They will be very excited to see the diversity of my
fellow cast members. You’re on a wild ride of beauty
and glamour in its many shapes and forms, and it’s
unexpected and inclusive. I think most people walk
away thinking, “ I’m a little bit like her. I can be like that,
yeah!” My show is a warm and welcoming place, and
it’s raucous; it’s wild! I’m really proud of the show as a
whole, and people will experience the biggest burlesque
show in history.
THE DRIVE
Named after the largest diamond
ever discovered which now
resides in the British Crown Jewels,
the Cullinan is the jewel in the
Rolls-Royce crown.
When Rolls-Royce announced
three years ago that it would launch
Cullinan, it did so in the knowledge
that its customers around the world
had asked it to build “The Rolls-Royce
of SUVs”, with luxury, performance and
usability not seen before in the SUV
market. Many of these customers were
younger, very successful high-net-worth
individuals who are heavily engaged in
the experience economy, and wanted a
Rolls-Royce that would take them to the
ends of the Earth in ultimate luxury.
“At this point in the history
of automotive design, SUVs have
become homogenous and ubiquitous,”
commented Giles Taylor, Director of
Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “The
label SUV is now applied to anything
with a two-box silhouette and the
least suggestion of going off tarmac.
We envisioned an authentic, threebox
all-terrain high-bodied car with
a convention-challenging design and
absolute capability that would satisfy the
adventurous urges of our clients.” That
promise has been fulfilled with the allnew,
highly-anticipated model from the
marque: The Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Only the second new Rolls-Royce
to sit on the all-new aluminium
Architecture of Luxury, Taylor and his
team designed the car he knew would
meet expectations: iconic design, proper
Rolls-Royce proportions inside and out,
and uncompromised levels of luxury.
Lending a toughness of expression to
the front of Cullinan, key features such
as lights and air intakes are deep set into
the bodywork, whilst strong vertical and
horizontal lines create a powerful visage,
with the prominent brow of a Saxon
warrior created by the line that runs
across the top of the pantheon grille and
‘eyebrow’-like daytime running lights.
Set slightly proud of the surrounding
bodywork, the hand-polished stainless
steel grille is pushed up and forward,
with the Rolls-Royce badge and Spirit
of Ecstasy riding significantly above the
line of the wing.
Away from the face of Cullinan, the
vertical lines that run from the A-pillars
down along the raised bonnet edge into
the metal skid plate emphasise the height
of the car and its dominant character.
JULY/AUGUST 2018 | TM

THE DRIVE
From the side, the purposefulness of
Cullinan is clear. The bonnet itself is seen
to be set higher than the wings of the car
to communicate greater toughness.
The line then rises quickly on the
A-pillar to resolve in an ultimate height
for Cullinan of 1,836mm, a height
accentuated by the glass-to-metal ratio
as seen from the side; whilst the depth of
the side profile is optically broken up by
a metal spear that flies down the lower
door surface and gives the whole side of
the car a beautiful sense of tension.
The rear view of Cullinan continues
the theme of functionality with its
exposed metal exhaust pipes and skid
plate. The design theme for the rear
lights remains simple as two narrow
upright units house all the lights and are
minimally adorned by thin narrow strips
of jewellery at their centre.
For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an
opening tailgate, which it calls ‘The Clasp’.
In a nod to the era when luggage was
mounted on the exterior of the motorcar,
the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part,
‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting
the place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens
and closes in its two sections automatically
at the touch of the key fob button.
For those who intend to transport
large items back from their adventures,
the boot offers a standard 560 litres of
space, growing to 600 with the parcel shelf
removed. Unlike other SUVs, the base
of the rear seats sit higher than the boot
floor, so the items in the boot cannot slip
forward. A loading length of 2,245mm
and load capacity of 1,930 litres can also be
accessed by electronically raising the boot
floor to meet the seat base.
Interestingly as part of Rolls-Royce
Bespoke Collective, a Recreation Module
housing equipment and paraphernalia
specific to each Cullinan owner’s pursuits
whether it be camping or kite flying can
be slotted and plugged into the boot of
Cullinan for away days.
Inside the cabin of Cullinan, the
centre stack is framed by hand-finished
metal pillars that bridge the upper fascia
and middle console, giving it a sense of
robustness, whilst also suspending the
horizontal elements of the fascia to give a
more commanding feel.
The upper fascia is clad in a newly
developed contemporary ‘Box Grain’
black leather – a durable and water
resistant boarded leather similar to that
used in Italian high-end luggage and
handbag designs. Supporting this upper
section is a strong band of wood that is
moulded in three-dimensions to flow
out to the centre stack, whilst the entire
dashboard is protected by leather pads on
top and at the bottom.
For the driver and passengers,
Cullinan awakes at the touch of a button
or by interfacing with the doors. For
ease of access, the car will lower itself by
40mm and the doors automatically close,
while the start button elevates Cullinan
back to ride height.
Those in the rear sit higher than
those in the front thanks to Rolls-Royce’s
Pavilion Seating, to enjoy grandstand
views of the surroundings through large
glazed side windows and panoramic glass
roof. Two rear passenger configurations
are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual
Seats. The former is likely to appeal
to families while the latter places a
premium on ultimate luxury and sees
two individual rear seats separated by a
Fixed Rear Centre Console with a drinks
cabinet containing Rolls-Royce whisky
glasses and decanter, champagne flutes
and a refrigerator.
All seats feature a simple but modern
horseshoe graphic which emphasises
the supportive bolsters of the seat and
showcase Rolls-Royce’s mastery of leather
craft, as the entire backrest panel has been
crafted from a single piece of leather. In
a first for Rolls-Royce, the rear seats also
fold down electronically in a number
of configurations. One press sees each
backrest effortlessly fold down, whist
at the same time moving the headrests
upwards to avoid making an imprint on
the seat cushion. Both seatbacks can be
folded completely, creating a flat load
area or in a 2/3 and 1/3 split, increasing
practicality even further.
This brings us finally to the driver’s
experience. All essential driving
information is clearly communicated
by the latest generation of digital
instruments. The central information
screen is for the first time touch
sensitive, allowing the driver to quickly
select functions, map views and vehicle
set-up whilst on the trail. This portal can
still be controlled from the iconic Spirit
of Ecstasy controller. It sits on the central
console with the ‘Off-Road’ button,
Hill Descent Control button and Air
Suspension height adjustment controls.
Further equipment include Night
Vision and Vision Assist including
daytime and night-time Wildlife &
Pedestrian warning; Alertness Assistant;
a 4-Camera system with Panoramic
View, all-round visibility and helicopter
view; Active Cruise Control; Collision
Warning; Cross-Traffic Warning, Lane
Departure and Lane Change Warning;
an industry leading 7x3 High-Resolution
Head-Up Display, WiFi hotspot, and
of course the latest Navigation and
Entertainment Systems.
All of it translates to Rolls-Royce’s
celebrated Magic Carpet Ride experience
which is as impressive off-road as it is
on-road thanks to Cullinan’s new lighter
architecture and latest generation selflevelling
air suspension. Through a
thorough re-engineering of the existing
air suspension system – including the
addition of larger air struts with more
air volume to cushion the blows of the
toughest of terrains – the strengthening
of drive and prop shafts, the inclusion
of drive to the front wheels as well as the
back for the first time in Rolls-Royce
history, and the complete reworking
of the new 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12
Rolls-Royce engine to deliver just the
right level of torque (850Nm) at the
lowest possible revolutions (1,600rpm),
the Rolls-Royce engineering team has
ensured Cullinan will take owners to
places no modern Rolls-Royce owner
has travelled in luxury before.
117
JULY/AUGUST 2018 | TM

THE DRIVE
The suspension makes millions
of calculations every second as it
continuously varies the electronically
controlled shock absorber adjustment
system – reacting to body and wheel
acceleration, steering inputs and camera
information. A new double-wishbone
front axle and 5-link rear axle deliver
astounding levels of control over
lateral roll and shear forces and deliver
incredible agility and stability, as does
the addition of four-wheel steering, all
contributing to incredible drivability
and nimbleness.
In the case of driving off-road,
the electronically controlled shock
absorber adjustment system uses an air
compression system to actively push
down any wheel it detects losing traction
to ensure every wheel is constantly in
contact with the ground and maximum
torque is being provided to all wheels.
The last piece of the puzzle is the
‘Everywhere’ button. Once engaged, the
driver can finesse the off-road setting
to glide over any situation, delivering
850Nm of torque to all four wheels
without interruption. Combined with
one of the deepest wading depths of any
super-luxury SUV at 540mm, the allterrain
high-bodied Cullinan ultimately
delivers when faced with deep snow, sand
or the need to ford streams.
THE VACATION
City of the Gods
Jessica Gibson aka The Travelista on why Athens isn’t just a gateway to
the Greek islands; it’s Europe’s coolest new city break destination.
THE VACATION
ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS
Ancient history is Europe’s tourism trump card, so why is
it that the most ancient city in the continent has been so
overlooked? Compared to the likes of Paris, Rome and
Barcelona, Athens has paled in popularity, until now.
Athens is fast becoming the destination of choice for
a wave of savvy millennial travellers looking for a sundrenched
city break with a difference. If you dare to see
beyond Greece’s economically turbulent time, you will be
rewarded endlessly.
Welcome to Athens: a place where ancient monuments
stand beside hipster coffee joints and rooftop bars. Here are
ten reasons why Athens is trending as a city break destination
right now:
THE MONUMENT
OF AGRIPPA
1. THE ACROPOLIS
The rugged and iconic citadel of The Acropolis dramatically
towers above Athens, ensuring part of the city remains
perfectly frozen in time. The mind-boggling history of The
Acropolis dates back to 447 BC but even if you’re not that
into the facts, it’s worth coming up here for the breathtaking
360-degree views of Athens. It will be worth it for the ‘gram.
2. THE COFFEE CULTURE
Coffee culture is rife in Athens. Young creatives and business
minds flock to the most on-trend establishments in the city
such as Tailor Made, Spollati or Six D.o.g.s, where outdoor
tables are hot property. If you’re lucky enough to get one, pull
up a pew, order yourself a ‘freddo’ coffee and prepare to watch
the catwalk of passers-by.
THE VACATION
“If you dare to see beyond
Greece’s economically
turbulent time, you will
be rewarded endlessly.”
3. THE ROOFTOP BARS
Scattered throughout the city, the rooftop bars of
Athens are hard to find. Often hidden away and terribly
signposted, each one feels like a secret society for people
in-the-know. They’re buzzing morning, noon and night
and depending on what time you go you’ll get a different
perspective of The Acropolis and the whitewashed city
below. Head to Couleur Locale for the ultimate secret
scene or go to The Roof Garden at Electra Metropolis
to watch an incredibly chic sunset.
4. ANAFIOTIKA
Until recent years the sleepy hillside village of
Anafiotika went by unnoticed by tourists, but now the
secret is out. Located just below The Acropolis hill, this
tiny village is more reminiscent of a rural Greek island
than a capital city. Get lost amongst the labyrinth of
narrow alleyways that connect the whitewashed houses.
5. THE GREEK FOOD
One thing that remains timeless about Athens is the
food. The quality and produce of Greek food in Athens
is just as high as on the islands. Feast on succulent
souvlaki, fresh seafood, mouth-watering mezze,
baked moussaka and tomatoes.
6. THE PRICE
Greece’s financial crisis has kept the prices of food, drink and
alcohol extremely competitive, meaning you’ll be pleasantly
surprised when the bill comes. Local wines are very cheap and
equally as delicious as their imported counterparts.
7. THE SUNSHINE
Athens is drenched in sun for the majority of the year, and
even if you travel in January you can expect highs of 10
degrees. The optimum time to travel is between March and
May, when the skies will be blue and the breeze will be balmy.
Whatever time of year you travel, you’re likely to see skies as
blue as the Greek flag.
8. THE BOUTIQUE HOTELS
Athens is catering to its ever-growing influx of trendy
travellers with a handful of boutique design hotels. The NEW
Hotel is as boutique as they come and attracts an artistic
crowd. Conveniently located between Syntagma Square and
the Old Town of Plaka, it’s an ideal city break base.
9. THE FLEA MARKET
The saying that ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’
certainly rings true in Athens’ Flea Market. This fascinating
complex of stalls sells objects that are weird, wonderful and
downright bizarre. Put your negotiation skills to the test.
10. THE OLD TOWN OF PLAKA
Plaka is Athens’ Old Town and easily the most picturesque
neighbourhood. Imagine cobbled streets, historical
architecture, sun-drenched piazzas and restaurants with
white and blue tablecloths. Adrianou is the main shopping
street in Plaka and is lined with boutique stalls and souvenir
shops. Venture to the end of this street and you’ll find a strip
of great restaurants too.
THE END | PALAWAN
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass
under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of
the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time.”
–John Lubbock–
