On The Cover:
Diving into summer can take many forms. From poolside
toe dipping , to diving into the garden (seeds first), taking
the plunge to work outside, testing the waters of new
experiences, or submercing yourself into a good book and
so very much more...
Welcome to the summer of 2018 and
the 10th edition of Coffee with Moe.
It almost seems impossible that we’ve
been flipping, sipping and exploring our
way through almost 3 years of content .
Wow! Thanks for being here.
You being here is exactly the reason I
keep creating this quarterly project.
As we roll forward, I look forward to
delivering more material to keep your
coffee breaks interesting.
In this issue, I’m taking on the request of
a few readers who want MORE pictures!
I’ll be giving you an image based issue.
OK OK, I am going to throw a couple of
words in too, how can I not?
So you can imagine this issue coming
together, this is my outdoor office in the
front yard. Tucked within the hedges of
cotoneaster and that enthusiastic
tarragon that’s grown a few feet taller
since the instagram photo of it was
taken a mere month ago. It’s a beast!
I would love to take you through a
mini tour of my garden and give you a
glimpse of what I spy along my way. To
get you thinking about your own play
time.
Where will summer fun find you?
I trust you’ll be sipping, flipping or out
there dipping your toes into your own
brand of adventure.
T’is the season to get out there and
have some summer loving fun!
So let’s go!
Garden
Tour
Welcome to my garden.
For those of you who are new here, this is one of my favourite creative
realms. It’s in the process of being transformed from a standard grassy
plain to an established mini woodland. An inspired haven for the birds,
the bees and whomever or whatever else wishes to visit. Come along for
a sneak peak at a day in the life of this food, herb & perennial rich
playground. My permaculture dream. My Eden in the City.
BEE-UTIFUL!
A single honey bee will
visit 50 to 100 flowers
per collection trip.
2 million flowers, on
average, are
needed to create one
single pound of honey.
Honey is the only food
known to contain
Pinocembrin. An
antioxident associated
with improved brain
functioning.
A single honey bee will
create 1/12th of a
teaspoon of
honey in it’s lifetime.
The average worker
bee lives 6 weeks.
Honey bees fly around
15 miles an hour. Their
wings beat on average
200 times per second.
A hive will fly 90,000
miles (3 orbits around
earth) to collect 1 kg of
honey.
Sadly, over the past 15
years Colony Collapse
has affected billions
of honey bees world
wide. Some regions
have seen up to a 90%
disappearance.
A single beehive can
produce around 100
lbs of honey on top of
what bees need to
survive the winter. A
beekeeper will only
collect this excess
amount.
All bee facts gathered from National Geographic, The
National Honey Board & Ontario Beekeepers Assoc.
FIELD NOTES:
It’s been hours since I’ve seen another human being.
Instead I’ve been surrounded by astounding natural
beauty, silent history and the odd train hooting in the
distance. A good day in the field.
FIELD NOTES:
I’m always amazed how every time I stop in what seems
like a quiet spot, within seconds a miniature and robust
world appears. Filled with beauty, rhythm and endless
momentum, This world seems mostly unaware of my
presence. Just as moments ago, I was unaware of it.
