By Carole Richardson
Move over Bagpuss,
there’s a famous new
feline on the celebrity
cat circuit. Bodacious
the Irish shepherd cat
has purred his way into the hearts of
millions of cat lovers across the world
after his besotted owner Suzanna
Crampton started sharing his antics on
social media.
One video alone of the spirited puss
working in the fields of Black Sheep
Farm in County Kilkenny, Ireland,
attracted an incredible 80 million
views and he has thousands of regular
followers on Twitter, Facebook and his
own website.
What’s so unusual about the
green-eyed cat that last summer had
publishers literally begging him to
write a book about his extraordinary
life helping shepherdess Suzanna herd
her flock of rare breed Zwartbles sheep?
“He’s unique. A beautiful character,”
says American-born Suzanna, whose
farm has been in her family for several
generations. “But he’s not a cuddly cat;
he doesn’t suffer fools gladly.”
After visiting the farm regularly
throughout her life, the 54-year-old
animal lover, who was trained in
Right: Overseeing the flock is a
serious business and below, a
cuddle with owner Suzanna
agriculture, moved back there
permanently in May 1997. For
three years beforehand, she’d been
bedridden after working in SE Asia
for a wildlife charity where she’d
picked up a tropical illness.
Suzanna first met the stray cat
after he wandered through the door
of a shop in Kilkenny in 2011. “For me it
was love at first sight, but I had to grow
on him. He’s definitely his own boss.
He has to get to know you.”
After no-one responded to appeals
to claim him, an Irish animal welfare
charity agreed she could keep him.
Within no time, he’d established his
place as top cat on the 50-acre farm,
acquainting himself with the other
animals including cats Miss Marley and
Ovenmitt and dogs Pepper and The
Big Fellow.
“He folIowed me all over the place,”
adds Suzanna, whose flock produces
fleeces for the Cushenden Woollen
Mill. When taking out the farm’s two
horses, he’d insist on following her
between them. Suzanna told him:
“Oh my goodness, you are bodacious”
which is a Cajun Louisiana term for
anyone who’s ‘big, bold, beautiful
and bolshie’. The name stuck and
he became Suzanna’s shadow and
constant companion during working
days that can last from 4am to 11pm
during lambing season. “I don’t have
a sheepdog. Bodacious oversees my
work; he’s always there ‘prow-prowing’
and chatting whatever jobs I am doing.
During lambing season he’ll hang out
with me in the lambing shed.
“Sometimes I’ll have troublesome
lambing incidents and he’ll sit on the
edge of the fence and give instructions
in miaows. He’s very diligent with his
work ethic around the farm!”
It was while advertising her sheep
for sale and photography classes that
Bodacious first developed a fanbase as
he kept appearing in pictures and film
clips of the farm that Suzanna shared
on social media.
On occasions, people have accused
her of setting up the cute scenes, but
Suzanna says, “You wouldn’t dare
make him do anything. He very much
has his own agenda about everything.
When visitors are here, he’ll appear
or not. One naysayer farmer came to
the farm and Bodacious followed us
everywhere in among the sheep and
horses. Afterwards he said: ‘Never
again will I say you set up that cat!”
Soon he was a celebrity in his own
right after Suzanna gave him his own
Twitter feed. Then an Australian
journalist mentioned that Bodacious
was her favourite cat during a speech
at a conference on farming and
social media. A glossy American
magazine then wanted to interview
the Irish shepherd cat and branded
products soon followed – postcards
and a calendar available on his website
which depicts life on the idyllic farm
throughout the seasons. Publishing
companies got wind of his antics and a
bidding war for his story (ghost-written
by Suzanna!) began.
“It’s not a Walt Disney movie or a
book. You can’t fabricate it; it’s real.
Sheep farming is a job where you are
dealing with the weather and where
you are very close to life and death;
close to the real world and the earth.
If an animal dies, the image is there.”
Suzanna hopes Bodacious will
sell enough books so she can buy a
tractor to make her own hay. “He could
become the first cat ever to buy his
owner a tractor!”
What’s in it for Bodacious though?
“Treats! He likes diced raw liver and
heart but his favourite is raw egg yolk.
It’s good for his coat!”
How Jill Green found relief from illness
and grief, a way to stay young and even
love by pulling on her walking boots
By Katharine Wootton
Standing on the
top of a hill in
the middle of the
Pennine Way trail,
Jill Green slowly
took in 360 degrees of
awe-inspiring views and felt
literally on top of the world.
“It was like everything I
looked on belonged to me,”
says Jill (76).
Having walked all 263
miles of this trail on her own,
she says it was a great healer
following a challenging past
few years.
Jill started long-distance
walking as a child and would
often lead hikes for other
children around Surrey. But
as she got older, she stopped.
Then, when she and her
husband moved to the Isle
of Wight later in life, they
decided to join the local
Ramblers’ Association as a
way of meeting people.
YOURS n EVERY FORTNIGHT
Starting with four and
five-mile walks, this soon
moved to longer hikes as
she completed the Isle of
Wight’s Vectis marathon
every year involving
walking 31 miles in one
day. After that, she joined
the Long Distance Walkers
Association and started
leading a 24-hour walk
around all 71 miles of the
Isle of Wight coast, as well
as training for a 100-mile
walk from Winchester to
Eastbourne.
Having now caught the
walking bug, Jill completed
countless more 100-mile
walks and even became
the first lady over 65 to
complete the Centurion
100-mile Race in all six of
the countries it’s held.
But then in 2008, life
changed for Jill completely
when her beloved
husband, Dave,
passed away, just
before she was diagnosed
with breast cancer. “It felt
like everything collapsed
around me. The only thing
that saved me was walking as
it spurred me to get outside,
especially when I decided I
wanted to get fit to walk 100
miles again.” And it was while
training for this walk, three
years after Dave died, that
Jill met another walker with
whom she would eventually
find love again.
“He was doing his first
ever 100-mile walk and I
was doing my 20th, but we
‘The only thing
that saved me was
walking as it spurred
me to get outside’
were both on our own and
carrying self-doubt. It was
wonderful to have someone
to walk with and then shortly
after he became my new
partner. Coming back to
walking truly gave me a new
lease of life.”
As well as meeting her
partner, Jill also says being
part of a rambling group
means she’s made lots of
good friends. “It keeps me
young as I’m mixing with
older people as well as being
good exercise. “Walking is so
uplifting and it’s just amazing
what going outdoors and
putting one foot in front of
the other can do for you.”
