editor
Happy 242nd
Birthday
America!!!
On our American calendar, there is no holiday more significant
to our nation than Independence Day. While we
all know our country existed way before 242 years ago,
on July 4th we celebrate our emergence as a new sovereign
nation - and Delray Beach is the absolute BEST place for that! There are
many things to do all day long for every age and budget. This year, the
Grand Finale fireworks show by Zambelli will be launched from a barge
located one mile off the shore on Atlantic Ave and A1A. Get your spot on
the sand early - it’s always spectacular! For a schedule of events check our
Fourth of July page.
The Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has a new president! Our City
Person Jeb Conrad comes to us from Indiana with an abundance of experience
in all aspects of local and city government, as well as community
and business development. He is passionate, compassionate and ready to
make positive waves. Welcome to Delray Beach!
Summer in Delray Beach is special. It gives us a chance to enjoy or “Most
Fun Town in the USA” with less crowds and traffic. Reservations are easier to
come by, and the overall feel is relaxed. As we relish in the lazy hazy carefree
days of summer, let us not forget to support our merchants. Shop and dine
local. Our loyal patronage is part of what makes Delray Beach so special.
Have an amazing summer! Wear sunscreen. Stay hydrated. And while
you look up at the beautiful fireworks - take a moment to thank all the men
and women that ensure our nation is safe and free.
It will be
celebrated...
with pomp
and parade...
bonfires and
illuminations
from one end of
this continent to
the other.
John Adams -
“4KIDS is honored to be included with
Association of America, Seminole Region,”
said 4KIDS president Kevin Enders. “It is
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.
Hip, hip, hooray for Independence Day! The July 4th celebration
in Delray is one of the main events of the year and is a
great way to enjoy our downtown. Lucky for us, July 4th is a
Wednesday this year so we have some independence from our work
grind, too. The events are held on Atlantic Avenue and A1A and you’re
invited to spend the whole day with your toes in or around the sand.
The sand castle contest kicks off at 8am on the beach but most of the
other entertainment is held between 5 and 9pm. There’s a flag raising
ceremony at 5pm on Atlantic Avenue and Gleason Street, as well
as live music beginning at 5pm. You can try and score a hole in one
at Putt’n Around’s mini golf course or check out the Kid’s Corner for
activities for the little ones, all while enjoying music from Solid Brass,
Echosmith and the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors. Whatever you do,
make sure you have a good spot on the beach for the fireworks which
are being launched at 9pm sharp from a barge in the ocean this year.
It’s a great time to be a Delray Beach local, and an American! Visit
www.julyfourthdelraybeach.com for more information and a detailed
schedule of events.
Let’s face it... Sometimes you
just need ice cream on a hot
summer day. Thankfully
Kilwins has enough flavors
to get you through summer,
which you can savor one lick
at a time. July is National Ice
Cream Month and is a fantastic
reminder that “joy” has a flavor
and it’s Mint Chocolate Chip
or Butter Pecan. Kilwins has
been making Original Recipe Ice
Cream since 1985 and now has
more than 40 premium, unique and
delicious flavors. They use only fresh, antibiotic-free
milk and cream from family farms to craft their creamy
concoctions, which include Kilwins Tracks, Traverse City Cherry, Sea-
Salt Caramel, The Perfect Apple Pie, Blue Moon, Raspberry Greek Yogurt,
and many more. Regardless which flavor you choose, you are
guaranteed to enjoy it because of the high quality ingredients and
the detail put into each scoop. Pair any flavor with their homemade
waffle cones, fudge and caramel toppings, and you’ve got yourself a
fantastic snack. So enjoy a cup or a cone and stroll down the Avenue
with an I-know-I-have-ice-cream-drool-face-but-don’t-care attitude,
loving every minute of it. Kilwins is located at 402 E. Atlantic Ave. Visit
Cruisin’, on a summer afternoon. July is Social Wellness Month
and is the perfect time to kick back and relax, getting off of
social media and into being social with your friends and family
members. If you’re tired of the usual happy hour at your house or
dinner date, grab your hat and sandals and head to the Delray Yacht
Cruises for their Summertime Steel Drum Cruises. Held Thursday,
July 5 and July 19, you’re invited to join them for a two-hour Caribbean
experience. They offer a full cash bar and a casual dining
menu, but this seems like a rum punch type of deal to me. The cruise
leaves at 6:30pm and heads along Delray Beach, Highland Beach
and Boca Raton, and the environment is fantastic. If you’re lucky
enough, you can get a spot on the deck and enjoy the warm summer
The Dog Days of Summer are officially here, ladies and
gentlemen, and that means so are higher temperatures
and humidity galore. The term “Dog Days” refers to the
hottest, most sultry days of summer, which falls July 3 through
August 11 this year. But, have no fear my fellow Floridians, Banyan
Restaurant and Bar will provide us with some cool shade
and some delicious and refreshing beverages and food bites.
They serve a fantastic happy hour from 4 to 7pm daily at their
bar, hightops and couches, so you are never too far away from
relaxing and cooling off. Enjoy $4 select draft beers, $5 select
well drinks, $6 appetizers (including beef empanadas, shrimp
dumplings, crab bites, risotto fritters, and more), and $7 select
wines by the glass. With great deals like this, you might almost
always wish it was the Dog Days of Summer…almost.
They are also open for brunch on the weekends, daily for dinner,
and are open late, too. You know, if you need to cool off a
bit more, “wink.” Banyan Restaurant and Bar is located at 189
N.E. Second Ave. Visit www.banyandelray.com or call (561) 563-
8871 for more information.
Who’s all “fore” some fun family time? You bet your
brand new golf balls that you are! July is Family Golf
Month and even if you’re a novice or an expert, golf
is a great way to spend quality time with the family. The Delray
Beach Golf Club is a local golf course in our own backyard
and you can play for almost less than the cost of taking the
family out to dinner. They offer a Back Nine Early Bird Nine
Hole Special from open until 8:30am for only $17. If you think
the kiddos would prefer to sleep in a bit, rates are only $37
until 12:30pm or $17 after 4:30pm. Or, just head to the driving
range for a bucket of balls, which start at only $5 for 35 balls.
Whoever loses has to make dinner, or whoever wins gets to
pick the movie for family movie night. Either way, it’s a great
way to spend some valuable time with those who are closest
to you but more than likely those who you see the least. The
Delray Beach Golf Club is located at 2200 Highland Avenue.
Visit www.delraybeachgolfclub.com or call (561) 243-7380
STuarT & Shelby
BY CHUCK HALBERG
Preparing for Hurricane Season
When preparing for a hurricane, the most important thing you can
do is to be ready for any situation. The team at Stuart & Shelby
understands that hurricanes can be scary, but as long as you have the
proper supplies and an emergency shelter plan everything should be
fine. For more hurricane preparation tips and a list of shelters go to
http://discover.pbcgov.org/publicsafety/dem/Pages/Preparedness.aspx
We’ve put together three tips to help you get through hurricane
season:
1. It is important to have disaster supplies on hand. Things such
as flashlights, batteryoperated radio, non-perishables, first aid kit,
and batteries are essential during a hurricane.
2. Checking into your home and auto insurance might be the
most important thing you do before a hurricane. Confirm that policies
are valid and that coverage is appropriate, that you have copies
of your policies, and emergency phone numbers.
3. Develop an emergency plan with your family. Make sure family
members know how to turn off gas, electricity, and water. Also, it
is critical that all children know how to contact the police or fire
department.
The First Purge is a new prequel taking us
back to the very first “Purge” experiment. “To
push the crime rate below one percent for the
rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of
America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that
vents aggression for one night in one isolated
community.” But when the violence of oppressors
meets the rage of the marginalized,
the contagion will explode from the trial-city
borders and spread across the nation. Stars
Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna
Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei.
Ant-Man and the Wasp From the Marvel
Cinematic Universe comes a new chapter
featuring heroes with the astonishing ability
to shrink: “Ant-Man and The Wasp.” In the
aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,”
Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) grapples with the
consequences of his choices as both a Super
Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance
his home life with his responsibilities as
Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne
(Evangeline Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael
Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott
must once again put on the suit and learn to
fight alongside The Wasp as the team works
together to uncover secrets from their past.
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
brings back the “Drac Pack” and his family/
squad, this time going on a summer vacation
cruise. Drac falls for the “intriguing-yet-dangerous”
captain of the ship, but she actually
has it out for him. This again featuring the
voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy
Samberg, and Genndy Tartakovsky.
Skyscraper Stars Dwayne Johnson leads
as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader
and U.S. war veteran Will Ford, who now
assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment
in China he finds the tallest, safest
building in the world suddenly ablaze, and
he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the
run, Will must find those responsible, clear
his name and somehow rescue his family
who is trapped inside the building...above
the fire line.
The Equalizer 2 - Denzel Washington returns
to one of his signature roles in the first
sequel of his career. Robert McCall serves an
unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed
- but how far will he go when that
is someone he loves? Cast includes Pedro
Pascal, Melissa Leo, Jonathan Scarfe, Sakina
Jaffrey, Ashton Sanders, Lexie Roth, Caroline
Day, as well as Bill Pullman.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again following
up the hugely successful, beloved original
movie from 2012. Told through the music
of ABBA, the story is about a woman trying
to figure out who her real father is. This is
sort of a prequel, telling the story of how the
three dads came into Donna’s life. Lily James
stars in this one, as the younger Donna, Meryl
Streep’s character from the first. The huge
cast stars Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski,
Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan,
Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Andy
Garcia, Julie Walters, Cher, Jeremy Irvine, Alexa
Davies, Naoko Mori, and Hugh Skinner.
Unfriended: Dark Web In this desktop
thriller, a stolen laptop prompts hackers
to terrorize a few young adults online in a
stand-alone sequel to “Unfriended.” Written
and directed by Stephen Susco. Stars
Betty Gabriel, Rebecca Rittenhouse,
and Chelsea Alden.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
continuing the M:I franchise
starring Tom Cruise
as IMF agent Ethan Hunt.
After the events of Rogue
Nation, Hunt and his IMF
team are now on the run,
and they’re being hunted
down by brute enforcer
Henry Cavill. The excellent
cast for this action film
includes everyone from
before: Rebecca Ferguson,
Michelle Monaghan, Alec
Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving
Rhames, Angela Bassett, and
Vanessa Kirby.
Sorry to Bother You stars
Lakeith Stanfield as a kid in Oakland
who lands a telemarketer job and learns
he can use his “white voice” to make it all the
way to the top of the sales world. The cokeobsessed
CEO is played by Armie Hammer.
The cast also includes Danny Glover, Tessa
Thompson, Patton Oswalt,
Teen Titans Go! To The Movies finds our
egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes in
their first feature film extravaganza - a fresh,
gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and
tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre,
complete with musical numbers. It seems to
the Teens that all the major superheroes out
there are starring in their own movies everyone
but the Teen Titans, that is! But de facto
leader Robin is determined to remedy the
situation, and be seen as a star instead of a
sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood
film director to notice them.
Injured in an
Auto Accident?
A Review of the Most Common
Injuries and the Most Effective Treatments.
There are several variables that contribute to the likelihood
of being involved in an auto accident which include the
speed of the vehicle, design of the vehicle, road design, skill
of the operator, and whether the operator was impaired while
driving. The most common injuries sustained in an auto accident
include strain/sprains of the neck (whiplash) or of the lower
back, herniated discs, contusions (bruises), abrasions (scratches),
lacerations (tearing of the skin), knee injuries, and rotator cuff
injuries. The most ominous injuries include traumatic brain injuries,
fractures, and internal organ disruption.
The neck and the lower back are the most vulnerable and susceptible
regions in the body for injury in an auto accident. In
regards to the neck, whiplash is the most common occurrence.
It is impossible to prevent the neck from snapping forward and
backward during impact. This action creates micro-tears in the
ligaments and tendons that hold the neck on top of the body. Subsequently,
secondary to the force of the impact the rubber like
material between the vertebrae called the intervertebral disc can
tear. The intervertebral disc is made up of an outer, resilient layer
called the annulus fibrosus and an inner gelatin-like substance
called the nucleus which is an irritant to nerves. Upon tearing,
the nucleus can herniate out of the disc and irritate spinal nerves
producing neck or lower back pain and pain into the arm or leg.
The impact experienced in an automobile accident may also
have more ominous results such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI)
or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Physical and cognitive
symptoms may result such as headache, nausea, dizziness, problems
concentrating, difficulty with short term memory, spasticity,
weakness in the limbs, and gait difficulties. The brain can shift forward
and backward in in the skull in response to the violent forces
put on the body producing a brain contusion which is termed
a coup-contrecoup injury. Another brain injury occurs when the
brain shifts excessively in the skull shearing the neurons on the
outer surface of the brain. In any case, some level of neurological
injury occurs in most auto accidents whether through direct or
indirect trauma.
A comprehensive examination must be conducted after the accident
to detect the extent of neurological and orthopedic compromise.
Once the diagnosis is made, treatment should be conducted
immediately with a goal of reducing inflammation and restoring
function. The current gold standard for soft tissue injuries such as
strains and sprains and even intervertebral disc injuries is Class
IV High Power Laser Therapy. This FDA approved, orthopedic tool
enhances tissue healing tenfold by increasing energy and protein
production in the damaged cells through a process called angiogenesis
which develops new blood vessels to increase circulation
to the damaged tissue. It also accelerates the release of oxygen
molecules from the hemoglobin in the blood to the local tissue.
The gold standard for the rehabilitation of disc herniations is a
procedure termed non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. This
process significantly reduces intra-discal pressure and promotes
retraction of the herniation into the disc and facilitates influx of
oxygen, proline and other substrates. The promotion of fibro elastic
activity stimulates repair and inhibits leakage of irritant sulphates
and carboxylates from the nucleus. The most recent trial sought to
correlate clinical success with MRI evidence of disc repair in the
annulus, nucleus, facet joint and foramina as a result of treatment
and found that reduction of disc herniation ranged between 10%
and 90% depending on the number of sessions performed, while
annulus patching and healing was evident in all cases.
Lastly, neurophysiologic rehabilitation must be conducted
to treat the under functioning brain regions through a process
called plasticity. Plasticity is the process by which a neuron can
change according to the environmental stimuli it is exposed to.
The gold standard for TBI and MTBI rehabilitation is the Dynavision
D2 which is used across the world in major rehabilitation
hospitals and in many collegiate and professional athletic programs.
It works on visuo-motor-spatial skills as well as on a neurological
process termed “efferent copy” which integrates two
very important regions of the brain; the cerebellum and the frontal
lobe. These areas of the brain are responsible for everything
that makes us human such as problem solving, timing, sequencing,
planning, initiating though processes, and coordination. The
user is required to manually compress targets made up of 64 LED
lights that are blinking in a strategically established manner according
to the neurological presentation of the person.
The “Y” NOT Instant
Facelift Has Arrived
One of the leading anti-aging treatments for the past
decade has been injecting soft-tissue fillers into areas
of the face to restore youthfulness and volume.
Most patients and injectors have been focusing on specific
areas of the face that targeted lines or wrinkles that
needed to be filled. However, recently there has been a
paradigm shift in the aesthetic industry to treat the whole face
and correct volume loss as we age rather than focus on individual
areas such as nasolabial folds or lips. By taking this whole-face
approach, patients are achieving an overall more aesthetically
pleasing, natural result and youthful appearance.
As we age our bones begin to shrink. This process starts to happen
as early as 30 years of age in both men and women. As our
bones or support structure decreases in size, our skin and subcutaneous
fat starts to sag and our form begins to change to a smaller
shape. What was once a well defined jaw line becomes blended
into the neck and round rather than precise edges and angles that
display length and youth. In order to restore youth properly, one
must not just cut away the extra skin as in surgical facelifts, but
restore volume that has been lost to ultimately achieve the ability
to give back the beauty that was once there.
The Y LIFT ® is a non-surgical instant facelift that uses soft tissue
filler to give structurizing volume back to the face. By placing
filler directly on top of bone in a closed system, the process is able
to lengthen, restore, and lift. This procedure is done in as little as
30 minutes and has no incisions, no anesthesia, no downtime and
gives instant results. It does not give bulk to the face or a puffy appearance
like we often see with injectables. This approach forms
the face into a perfect aesthetically pleasing shape with lengthening
and height. By facial contouring it can accentuate the cheek
bones, under eye area , lift the neckline and accentuate the jaw
line. It is a full face approach to restore and rejuvenate. It is suitable
for men and women with a natural refreshed appearance.
The Y LIFT ® can only be done by providers who are trained and
certified to perform this advanced procedure. It is definitely a
game changer in the aesthetic and soft filler industry.
health & beauty | Your Dental Health
By craig spodak, dmd, pa
You’ve Lost A Tooth – Now What?
Dental implants are a popular option
if you have missing or failing teeth.
Tooth loss is a common problem that you have a good chance
of experiencing at some point in your life, unfortunately.
Whether you lose a tooth from cavities, severe gum disease,
accidental damage or other reasons, the loss of a single tooth or
multiple teeth can have dramatic and lasting effects on your smile
and your ability to chew if it is not dealt with in a timely manner.
Without replacing the tooth, your smile could look unsightly or
crooked, in addition to creating further problems for the future.
Teeth adjacent to a space where a tooth has been lost often tend
to shift or move into that space. This movement leads to further
instability among neighboring teeth, and soon enough your bite
will suffer because the teeth have become misaligned. Additionally,
teeth in the opposing jaw will often begin to “grow” further up or
down as it looks to make contact with a neighboring tooth. If no
tooth is encountered, the gum tissue in the area of the lost tooth
may become the surrogate, which is a match that can lead to constant
discomfort or a persistent sore spot.
To make matters worse, the jawbone where the root of the missing
tooth used to sit is no longer stimulated during chewing, and it
will shrink away in a process known as “resorption.” Once jawbone
density is lost, it’s difficult to regain, regardless if you undergo sophisticated
bone grafting techniques.
So what do you do when you lose a tooth? Replace it! There are
a few different options for replacing missing teeth – including
a fixed bridge or removable partial denture
– but the best solution for managing gum tissue
architecture, jawbone strength and aesthetics is
dental implants.
The most common option in dentistry for tooth
replacement used to be a “fixed bridge,” which is
when the teeth on either side of the space were
shaved down and a dental bridge that had a fake
tooth in the middle was cemented over
them. This addressed the problem
of teeth shifting, as well as keeping
aesthetics in line. However,
because chewing forces would
now be distributed to the
bone of the neighboring teeth,
the resorption process would
often continue and, over time,
create a defect in the bone and
gums in that area.
For those who are missing the majority or all of their teeth, or
who didn’t opt for the fixed bridge, removable partial or full dentures
are another option. This, unfortunately, still does not solve
the problem of lost roots and bone resorption. Dentures also tend
to be uncomfortable and also make it difficult to speak or chew effectively,
not to mention smiling with confidence!
Most dental professionals would agree that replacing a missing
(or soon to be missing) tooth or teeth with dental implant supported
crowns or bridges is the best option. A dental implant is like
an artificial tooth implanted in the jawbone that is capable of supporting
one or more teeth. You no longer need to rely on neighboring
teeth to support either a fixed or a removable bridge, or alter
perfectly health teeth to accommodate the replacement of one, and
implants help to preserve the strength of the underlying jawbone.
So how do you know you might need a dental implant?
If you have lingering, unprovoked (not in response to eating or
drinking) pain, it’s possible your tooth may need to be removed
and replaced with a dental implant. In some cases, a dental implant
can be surgically inserted the same day the offending tooth
is removed. This is known as “immediate implant placement” and a
temporary crown can sometimes be attached to the implant so the
patient never has to have a gap in their smile.
In situations where there is considerable bone loss around the
failing tooth root or you’ve suffered a traumatic injury, “delayed
implant placement” is the best option. In these instances, it’s
common to have a bone graft at the site of the extracted
tooth to help rebuild the volume of the bone that’s needed
for future implant placement. This could occur a few
months later, after the bone graft has healed, but many
times a temporary device can be worn until the implant
crown is placed so your smile stays intact.
Regardless of the cause, replacing missing or failing
teeth with dental implants as early as possible
will give you the best chance for a successful
and aesthetically-pleasing outcome.
You want to reduce or eliminate the
risk of having teeth shift, which will
help to avoid future dental problems
and keep you smiling straight!
Mind Makeover
If you are serious about transforming your
body and getting in the best possible shape
there’s a couple of things you will need to
do before you start your transformation.
You might think I’m going to say…plan your workouts, clean
out your pantry etc…but, not so fast! Before you can start
to transform your body you have to transform your mind.
Transforming your body is pretty much ALL mental. If your mind is
not in the right place your body will not follow suit. I’ve seen it time
and time again in the fitness industry. Your mindset is the ONLY
thing that separates you from having the body of your dreams. It’s
the difference of reaching goals or missing them. With that being
said, here are some things to consider before beginning your
“physical” transformation.
Start by identifying your current mindset. You
may feel frustrated or discouraged about your
current situation. You may feel you have tried
everything to change your body with no success.
You may feel defeated that you gain
and lose the same 10 pounds over and
over. Whatever your situation may be,
you need to realize what feelings you’re
having and why you’re having them.
Once you identify your current
mindset you’ll be able to move forward
with the right type of thinking.
Which brings me to my next
point, the power of positivity.
A positive mindset is a MUST.
We attract what we think about.
We become what we think
about. Positive thoughts yield
positive results. If you start your transformation
with doubts about your abilities or doubts about
hitting your goals you are already setting up for
failure. Know there will be obstacles along the
way, but you need to have the right mindset so
obstacles will not hinder you final result. Whatever
life throws you (life is full of curveballs)
you’ll be ready to handle any situation or bump
in the road. Too many people give up on their
goals because of circumstances totally within
their control. So be ready, willing and able to say
and do, “Whatever comes my way, I’ve got this
and I WILL do this!”
The next key to a successful transformation is that you have to
want it bad enough. If not, then EVERY excuse in the book will
stand in your way. “Oh, I didn’t have time to get to the gym. It was
just a couple extra slices of pizza.” Every person that wants it bad
enough, gets results. The clients that think they want to transform
but don’t have a yearning in their heart for change, don’t. It’s really
as simple as that. New clients will ask, “Do you think I have
what it takes to transform?” And the answer is always, “Yes, anyone
can transform as long as you want it bad enough!” When you want
something bad enough, your heart and head are into it and
with that your body will follow.
The last piece of advice is to leave fear of failure at the
door. There is nothing to be afraid of - the only way to
fail is by not even trying. Fear is often what holds us
back from going after the things we really want in
life. What should really scare you is the thought
of staying stagnant in your current situation.
Imagine living in a body you’re uncomfortable
with for the rest of your life…now
that’s scary! The only way you can
fail is by giving up. Understand
that transforming your body is
marathon not a sprint. Every
“body” is different and each person’s
transformation will take a
different amount of time. For some it
will be three months for some it will be one year.
Whatever it is for YOU, don’t ever give up. Failure will
never be an option.
Before embarking on your physical transformation,
make sure your mind is warmed up and
ready to run with you. Our mind is the most
powerful tool we have and it can either make
us or break us. Use it wisely and your transformation
will be a little easier than you think!
SHEARS OF FAITH
Unique And Fabulous Salon With
Whitney Smith And Joe Ardagna
By Diane Feen | Photos by melissa korman
Mark Twain once said, “Find a job
you enjoy doing, and you will never
have to work a day in your life.”
Whitney Smith and Joe Ardagna have never worked a day
in their lives. You know why? Because both master stylists
and colorists have a passion for their work, and their
clients that is unsurpassed. They do their craft – making women look
beautiful – almost every day but they’re driven by passion and perfection
– not a paycheck.
It’s been almost a year since they opened the doors of their new
salon, Shears of Faith on Federal Highway. And it’s been an uphill road
paved with golden mile markers. There are now seven people working
at Shears of Faith and their roster of clients continues to climb.
After working a full day, Smith often has over 20 text messages
from clients in need of advice or appointments. Her expertise in cut
and coloring hair has garnered her a roster of clients who clamor to
get into her seat.
“Whitney has been highlighting and cutting my hair for five years.
It was unhealthy before, but she made it healthy. She is so thoughtful
and kind, I’ve never met anyone like her. She’s an expert in color and
knows exactly what to do with my hair. She’s even coming up to North
Carolina to do my hair for my upcoming wedding,” said Kelsie Weekes.
Ardagna is also a superstar in the cut and color realm. “I’ve recently
started getting my hair done by Joe after a horrible highlight by someone
else. He knew exactly how to fix the disaster with balayage, foils
and toner to even out the brassiness. I also absolutely LOVE the way
he cuts my hair. My blond balayage looks bright and natural. Everyone
at Sheers of Faith is super nice and accommodating,” said Allison.
Allison is right. Everyone at Shears of Faith adheres to their golden
rule of kindness and gentleness. Hugs are never short in supply and
coffee, snacks and good humor are byproducts of being in their midst.
56 | July 2018 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The rest of the Shears of Faith team includes Amy Jenness, who
owned a salon with Ardagna in New Hampshire, and has a passion
for perfection and excellence for her clients’ tresses. “I’ve been cutting
and coloring hair for 25 years and was an educator for Wella. I
relocated to Florida and love working at Shears of Faith. I also enjoy
enhancing my clients’ natural beauty. Joe is awesome, and I feel like
I’ve known Whitney forever.”
Smith is also smitten with Jenness. “Amy is amazing, she was a
Godsend. She fits perfectly here and does the most amazing blowout.
She also treats people the same way we do. She knows the most
advanced trends and is extremely skilled.”
Kierstin Poirier is another Shears of Faith Pro. The cut and color
expert often hears clients say, “I feel beautiful” or “I love my hair.”
But this admiration for Poirier’s talent is one felt on both sides of the
chair. “I love it here and I love being a stylist and colorist. It is hard
to find people like Joe and Whitney in this industry who are honest,
caring, love what they do and want others to succeed.”
Lately they’ve all become part artist – part hair professionals.
That’s because the new “in” color trend is called balayage. This celebrity
driven hair color is actual painting of the hair to create a multidimensional
appearance with assorted shades that look natural and
sun kissed. “Balayage is very personalized and looks natural. You also
don’t have to come in as often for maintenance. We marry the color
with the light and dark tones. It’s big in Europe,” said Joe.
They also excel in adding hair extensions either strand-by-strand
or tape-ins by Great Lengths USA. The terrific news is that you get
hair extensions to match the natural color of your highlighted or
balayage hues. They just order different color extensions to match
your hair perfectly, regardless of the different shades of your hair.
Though Joe and Whitney are infamous for their skills as master
colorists and stylists, their new shop exudes much more than scissors
and hair color products. “I wanted a shop where clients could
feel at home like they would with friends and family. A client recently
told me - ‘I have to commend you, you have a really good thing going
on here. This place is unbelievable, it feels like home,’” said Whitney.
Both Joe and Whitney consider their clients as friends and go out of
their way to make sure they’re happy. Rachel Dapolito loves the family
atmosphere and is smitten with the fact that Joe not only does such
a good job on her extensions and hair color, but also makes time for
her in a crunch. “Sometimes I have to travel for business and I need
a last-minute appointment. I love that Joe will schedule me in right
away and take care of me – it’s important for my job and he gets it.”
Things like that are what make Whitney teary eyed when talking
about Shears of Faith. “Every time I walk in here I can’t believe this
is ours. It’s my dream come true. I could not have done this without
the help of my husband, my father, and Joe. With faith in the Lord
anything is possible. I want to thank my employees and continue this
journey we’re on together. I never want to let them down and hope to
teach them what I have learned over the years. It’s all been a blessing.”
The Shears of Faith clients agree. It’s been a blessing – and they’re
proud to be a part of this great place of beautification.
Equestrian Community
Calls Delray Beach Home
By nicol jenkins
the wave in the luxury
Real Estate Market.
The town of Delray Beach is no longer a hidden gem in the
Real Estate market. Homebuyers are taking notice of the
bustling beach town and want to find their dream home in
the sunny coastal area.
Many equestrians who have farms and estates in Wellington have
been purchasing luxury beachfront homes in Delray Beach. The
town provides the best of both worlds for the equestrian community
since they are close enough to their farms to ride their horses
yet just far enough away to enjoy the beach and nightlife in the City.
Rider and Realtor Matt Johnson with Engel & Völkers in Delray
Beach is an expert at matching the equestrian community with the
luxury Delray Beach, Wellington and Palm Beach Real Estate market.
“The Wellington equestrian market has expanded in recent
years into an international destination. Many have their horses in
Wellington and their primary winter residence in Delray Beach,
Manalapan, and Palm Beach,” said Johnson. “Delray Beach is a
prime market for Real Estate because it’s a more casual hip lifestyle
offering the beach and everything is within walking distance, many
of the restaurants and boutiques are right on Atlantic Avenue. It’s
convenient for the equestrians because they can get to the beach in
a half hour from the barn, so they can ride during the day and then
go back for the nightlife and beach. If members of the family aren’t
riders, Delray offers a great lifestyle for them too, it gets them out
of the equestrian scene.”
In 2016, Johnson matched an equestrian client with a stunning
home directly on Delray Beach - breaking a real estate record of
selling the highest sold home in the City at over $26 million.
The local Realtor and equestrian attributes his successful 20
year Real Estate career to building relationships with his clients.
He also has experience with estate homes, high-end horse farms,
luxury auctions and vacant land sales.
“I like helping people and making a match between homebuyer
and the perfect property,” said Johnson, who also has an eye for
marketing his listings.
“I don’t rest on my laurels, I’m always looking to raise the bar and
provide the best exposure for my properties, to set a new standard.”
Johnson has a proven track record of success with luxury real estate
sales of some of Delray Beach and Wellington’s most prestigious
properties. He is known as a premier real estate expert in Wellington,
Delray Beach, Palm Beach, Jupiter, Lake Worth, Palm Beach Gardens,
and has extensive training in the latest real estate strategies.

His focus and competitive nature is also apparent as an active
dressage rider and competitor, with his Danish stallion Petersborg’s
Qasanova. Johnson has been training with Olympians since
2014, and he and Qasanova represented the U.S. at the World
Championships in Verden, Germany.
“The first time I came to Wellington to see the horse show, I was
hooked. I did horse riding full time for five years but I grew tired of
being on the road all the time. I was inspired to get into real estate
because I always had an interest even as a kid in houses, architecture
and design. It also provides a good living to support my riding,”
said Johnson.
The local Realtor also credits his continued success to working
at Engel & Völkers. Last year he was ranked 4th world-wide. They
have become one of the world’s leading companies specializing in
the sale and letting of premium residential and commercial property,
yachts and private aviation; currently operating a global network
of over 10,000 real estate advisors spanning 33 countries. They offer
both private and institutional clients a professionally tailored
range of luxury services. Committed to exceptional service, the firm
supports their advisors with an array of premium quality business
services; marketing programs and tools; multiple platforms for mobile,
social and web; as well as access to its global network of real
estate professionals, property listings and market data.
If any of his clients want to buy a second home anywhere in
the world, Johnson is able to refer his clients to another Engel &
Völkers professional.
“Within Engel & Völkers we have an exclusive network of real estate
advisors around the globe called ‘private office’. We have been
handpicked and vetted by the corporate office, and there are only
128 private office advisors in the world. If a client is looking for a
property for example in Tuscany, Santa Barbara, Dubai, or Toronto,
I have a private office advisor I can refer to. I can rest easy knowing
my client will be handled with the same level of professionalism I
offer,” explained Johnson.
Engel & Völkers provides much support to their advisors including
offering networking, cutting edge marketing and technology and
hiring agents who are enthusiastic and passionate about real estate.
With Palm Beach becoming more of a global Real Estate market,
Johnson through his firm focuses on networking globally. His
clients, from CEOs to professional athletes, come from all over the
world including Demark, Canada, South America and locally.
“Networking globally is a huge focus for me. Wellington and Delray
Beach are becoming international destinations, and it’s important
to use a global luxury brand when selling or buying a home to
tap into those buyers,” Johnson said.
Helping You Achieve
Your Best Life
By nicol jenkins | Photos by melissa korman
Like so many of us, Kelly Doyle was
running around in circles, never taking a
second to stop and live in the moment.
Rachael, Kelly and Kristen
Stuck at a crossroads in her life trying to choose which path
to take, Kelly sat still and her purpose for life came to her.
While spending a month alone at a wellness spa in Holland,
she cleared her mind in the saunas and one day in the garden her
friend asked what are you thinking about. Her answer was… ‘nothing’.
It was the first time Kelly’s head was not thinking constantly
about work, family, the past and the future.
Her awakening prompted a passion to help others live a more
fulfilling life in the present out of ego with positive frequencies and
energies. Her business, Thermae Retreat in Delray Beach, provides
an organic, vegan wellness space centered around relaxing, detoxing
saunas and holistic therapies.
At the core of Thermae Retreat is the message: change your
thoughts and perception to change your life.
“When I came back from my trip, I was a completely different
person. I thought that everyone should do what I did. I learned
that if you calm the mind, it shifts the way we walk through life. I
move and flow in love, health and happiness. I don’t think people
realize how much their thoughts, actions and the people around
them affect every single aspect of their life. It all comes down to
energetic bodies; we are all made of electrons, neutrons and protons,
energy has negative or positive vibrations,” said Kelly Doyle,
owner of Thermae Retreat.
One of the treatments offered at the retreat awakens the soul.
Shamanic Practitioner Debra Kelly helps her clients begin to release
negative situations, unhealthy relationships or the feeling of
not living an authentic life. She focuses on raising frequencies using
sound with gongs and chimes, and crystal therapy combined
with relaxing massage.
“The therapy uses sound and crystal frequencies to release negative
energies out of your body. For example if you are in a relationship
you chose not to let go; the negative energy is staying in the
body and not allowing room for a new healthy relationship. As soon
as you release, your energy shifts and your whole world begins to
change. We believe in the law of attraction: whatever you are putting
out will result in what comes towards you. Also in life, if you
don’t learn the lesson the first time, the experience will just repeat,
and repeat,” said Kelly.
“Did you know that the frequency 528hz is the frequency of a
blade of grass, the frequency of love, and is used in biology to repair
DNA? We play frequency music at Thermae to rebuild cells, get rid
of guilt, calm pain or bring clarity. All of these emotions are affected
with different frequencies. You have a sauna and relax in our
meditation room and let the frequencies enter each cell.”
Have you forgotten how to relax and simply be still? Thermae
teaches you how to be present - how that changes your
life in a tremendous way and trickles down to everyone and
everything around you. How you can change every relationship
in your life for the better by learning how to be present.
“We look to see what our guests need when they walk
through the door, it is usually more than a massage or skincare.
Ninety percent of everyone walks in with some level of
stress and anxiety, or a lack of who they truly are. One of the
reasons everything is focused around the saunas is it gives
guests and members a place to be still for at least 30 minutes
with no cell phones or electronics; during this quiet time they
are able to find some clarity. We begin there,” said the owner.
Thermae Retreat also offers a variety of saunas, custom
massage therapies, exfoliating body bindis (scrubs & dry
brushing), heated detoxing clay wraps, organic facials, energy
work, a meditation and move room, outdoor garden and Nourishe
facials treatments. Monthly memberships are available.
“Thermae Retreat exists to give people a place to come and
be still for awhile. We want people to carry that to the car, and
the next time to work and then to their everyday life so they are
living in the present all the time,” said Kelly. “We are a tribe of
passionate guides, therapists and master estheticians and practitioners
here for whatever someone needs. I always say in the
very least a seed is planted. We just allow everything to flow.”
Change your life today at Thermae Retreat. It’s as simple as
changing your thoughts and your perceptions.
Can Help You Find A New Home!
By nicol jenkins | Photos by melissa korman
The weather is Heating up
and so is the Delray Beach
Real Estate Market
With the summer months heating up, Delray Beach’s real
estate market is also continuing to rise.
Local Real Estate expert Catherine McGlennon of Engel
& Völkers in Delray Beach, says her clients are looking year
round to buy homes in the area.
“Delray Beach is definitely not a seasonal market anymore. I’m as
busy in the summer as I am in season. It’s a variety of buyers from
locals as well as people looking for their second home,” said Catherine.
“When I first moved to Delray in 2001 it was very seasonal and
many homeowners were snowbirds. Now they are snowflakes and
coming here even in the month of July. They enjoy that the town is
still busy but not too crowded at the restaurants and the beaches.”
“I am also hearing from my out of state clients looking to make
Florida their primary residence for tax purposes. They want to sell
the property they already have here and upgrade to a larger home.
With Florida’s favorable tax laws I have seen a boost in our Million
dollar plus luxury market. It’s an exciting time to be a Real Estate
Agent in Delray as we watch our small town transform to a Global
The Dog DaYS of Summer
Destination being compared to “Chic” hotspots such as the Hamptons
and Aspen. We have buyers coming from all over the US as well
as international places like Hong Kong and Russia.”
The Jet Setters are coming and it’s easy for them to fall in love with
Delray as Delray has been named the ‘Most Fun Small Town in America’.
Many people are drawn to Delray because the town has a small
that small town feel. Delray is hot right now; it’s the place to be!”
added Catherine.
With Delray being so desirable, she has also been working with
developers who are building the luxury residences the buyers are
looking for. She is currently offering For Sale a rare Oceanfront Estate
undergoing extensive renovations. This prestigious home is
the perfect location just steps to the sand and a few blocks north
of our famous Atlantic Avenue. With its exceptional design and the
expansive grounds, the home affords the owners an abundance of
privacy yet minutes to everything. The home features over 12,000
is a natural, easy experience in this home. Spectacular ocean
views make this unique home priceless! It is currently on the market
for $16,990,000.
“It’s an exciting project to be involved with as I’m fanatical about
real estate and design. I believe the local residents will be pleased
with the homes transformation to a Grand Villa by the sea,” she said.
When Catherine is not busy selling real estate she is busy giving
back to the community.
“I have always been either raising money or volunteering for
charities. I am passionate about helping others,” she added.
She is on the board of the Jerome Golden Center for Behavioral
with mental illness and substance abuse. She is also a lifetime committee
member for Tico Torres of Bon Jovi Children Foundation.
Turn Back The Clock
For A Youthful Look
by nicol jenkins | Photos by melissa korman
Searching for a natural, fresher
look but worried about getting
an overdone appearance.
Delray Dermatology + Cosmetic Center is the answer. The boutique
full service Dermatology practice in the heart of East
Delray Beach combines excellent medical and surgical Dermatologic
care with exceptional cosmetic treatments under one roof.
Delray Dermatology specializes in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment
as well as comprehensive medical Dermatology. The practice
offers the latest personalized cosmetic treatments from a compassionate
medical team in a beautiful, comfortable environment.
“Delray Dermatology provides a more natural approach with an
artistic eye. We provide consultations to create a treatment plan
to naturally enhance your features and not make you look like
someone you are not,” said Dr. Francesca Lewis. “If someone can
recognize that you have had cosmetic procedures, then it wasn’t
done correctly. We offer a look that is rested, refreshed, and not
overdone; and in general I find that Delray Beach residents who are
interested in cosmetic treatments want to stick with a natural enhancement.
They don’t want to look like something has been done.”
What sets their cosmetic treatments apart from the rest is Dr.
Dr. Lewis and her staff at Delray Dermatology + Cosmetic Center
Dr. Lewis specializes in natural appearing filler
injections to enhance each patient’s unique features
Lewis’ skill as well as a combination of treatment modalities and
skin care regimens. “Delray Dermatology provides a multi-modality
treatment plan to get long-lasting results. We combine a personalized
skin care regime based on a Visia complexion analysis,
Botox and fillers to soften fine lines, and microneedling or laser
treatments to stimulate collagen production,” she said.
Laser treatments can also help to reduce sunspots, redness, acne
scars and even the complexion. Using a combination of modalities, Delray
Dermatology can help you achieve Complete Correction targeting
the 3 “C’s”: Creases, Color and Contour. They also specialize in skin cancer,
eczema, benign moles and growths, hair loss, and rosacea. A newer
treatment offered is Kybella, which dissolves the fat under the neck.
They only use the latest in technology to maximize results including
Visia, an imaging session which captures an analysis on your
complexion and shows sun damage, wrinkles and gives a score on
how your skin age compares to other women of your same age.
Dr. Francesca Lewis, MD is a longtime expert in the field. She is
certified by the American Board of Dermatology and specializes in
general and cosmetic dermatology. She graduated with a Bachelor
of Science from Vanderbilt University, and attended Emory University
School of Medicine, and was elected into the medical honor society
Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Lewis completed her internship and
residency in Dermatology at the Medical University of South Carolina.
She gained much expertise working in a prestigious cosmetic
Dermatology practice in Silicone Valley, where she gained extensive
experience with laser treatments and cosmetic injectables at one of
been practicing in Palm Beach County since 2015. As she and
her husband have made Delray Beach their home, she decided
to open Delray Dermatology and Cosmetic Center to provide
better Dermatologic care for her community.
“We have added a skincare consultant to the practice to
maximize patient education on the importance of sunscreen
and a medical grade skincare regimen and are adding aesthetician
services and Hydrafacial treatments this summer. We
strive to stay up to date on new technologies, expanding cosmetic
offerings to include skin tightening and body contouring
for fat removal in the near future,” said Dr. Lewis.
Education on skin care is also a big part of her business.
Dr. Lewis hosts many monthly informative sessions on skin
cancer awareness, the importance of wearing sunscreen, and
cosmetic treatments. During July 23rd through July 27th, the
office will have a patient appreciation week with demonstrations,
discounted cosmetic procedures, complimentary Visia
skin analysis and more.
Her patients praise Delray Dermatology and Dr. Francesca
Lewis.
“I had a great experience with Delray Dermatology. The
office is beautiful and I was received warmly and professionally
from the front desk! Dr. Lewis was great. I had a complimentary
consultation with no additional obligation. She was
professional and not pushy at all. She gave me great advice
and a plan of action as well as a detailed outline of costs. I
wound up having her do my Botox right then and there because
I felt so comfortable. I would highly recommend her!”
stated a happy patient.
“Dr. Lewis did an amazing job on my Botox and fillers. The
office is gorgeous and the staff is wonderful. Perfect location
close to downtown Delray with plenty of parking. I will most
definitely continue to see Dr. Lewis for all my skin care needs,”
stated another patient.
Calming the Unquiet Mind:
Understanding ADD/ADHD
What’s Going On?
Welcome to my cozy downtown private practice office. The
sun has found openings through the clouds and streams through
my window onto the carpet before us. I’m sitting with a client in
our first meeting, gathering history and evaluating a range of issues
presented. He is a bright, accomplished and energetic realtor
with an “ultra-bright” smile and piercing blue eyes. He describes a
pattern of fatigue and exhaustion that sound like depression. He’s
anxious about his 16-year-old son who’s had trouble with poor
grades and an expanding pot smoking habit. His son has struggled
academically throughout school and I suspect Attention Deficit Disorder,
but it is early for that level of diagnostic thinking. I’ll meet
with the boy to get a better feel. So, I keep listening intently. If it is,
indeed ADD/ADHD, there are strategies for managing it.
ADD/ADHD Runs in Families
Both the genetic predisposition and the social environment of
families can result in “handing down” ADD/ADHD. Not always
present, the H stands for hyperactivity and is sometimes seen as a
failure or inability to control impulses. Attention darts around, the
mind races and younger kids can’t seem to keep their seats. Forgetfulness,
incomplete assignments, excessive boredom, and perfectionism/procrastination
can be markers for this way of thinking
and behaving. ADD can also express as “dreamy,” distracted or unfocused
without impulsivity.
An Emotional Cost
Depression, anxiety and substance abuse often accompany this
“un-quiet” condition in the struggle to for calm and focus. Especially
in middle and high school years, the emotional cost of not fitting in
with peers and failed assignments can take a profound toll. In my
work with addiction and recovery, the correlation between early
learning difficulties and substance abuse can be remarkable. And sad.
Cure or Manage?
There are modern medications that can help. A good psychiatrist
can monitor mood and behavior as the effects of ADD/ADHD can
change over time. Many grow out of ADD/ADHD in early adulthood.
Others learn strategies for managing more skillfully. Hugely
helpful is to remove the stigma by defining it as a trait and a uniqueness,
not a liability. History is full of high functioning, brilliant
people with ADD, including Albert Einstein and David Neeleman,
founder of Jet Blue.
Help Far and Wide
Helping to make learning less stressful for busy-brained kids,
Space of Mind is a non-traditional schoolhouse run by the indefatigable
Ali Kaufman here in Delray. I refer there often. The Center for
Children and Families at Florida International University is worldclass
clinical research center dedicated to improving the lives of
children, especially those with ADD/ADHD. Driven to Distraction,
written by Ed Hallowell is a great primer in the basics of understanding
the issues. The monthly periodical “ADDitude” is a godsend.
New President Of Delray Beach
Chamber Of Commerce
Jeb Conrad is a chamber of commerce kind of guy. Not only
does he enjoy the challenges that come along with the job, but
he is quite adept at all sides in this triangle of city engagement.
He has worked at four different chambers of commerce and gets
excited about being a part of the businesses and local communities.
“We have the opportunity to perfect, change and/or
drive initiatives as business collaborators. I have served as a voice in
that group in all different circumstances,” said the Indianapolis native.
You bet he has.
Conrad was the President and CEO of the Bloomington, Indiana
Chamber of Commerce and the President and CEO of the Kokomo
Economic Development Alliance. He also worked for the Indianapolis
Economic Development and was Director of Community and Government
Affairs for Simon Property Group (the largest Mall Developers).
To say that Conrad is a people person would be like saying the sun
comes up in the morning. “What makes Jeb so special is that he is always
positive and working to help people be successful in business
and in life. He’s dedicated to building the community anywhere he
has been involved and is politically savvy in working to build consensus
before making decisions that affect the community at large,” said
Steve Bryant, Executive Director of Ivy Tech Community College.
Conrad’s people skills were honed before he even knew what the
word honed was. His father Larry was the Secretary of State of Indiana
from 1970 to 1978 and was not only his first mentor, but an example
of good citizenship and leadership. “My father was very gregarious, he
knew everyone in a room and made everyone feel comfortable. He became
one of the transformational leaders in Indianapolis,” said Conrad.
Though it sounds glamorous to be the son of a secretary of state,
Conrad mentions this fact as a footnote during his interview. It was
not as exciting to an eleven-year-old. “When I was a kid I wanted to
play football with my friends and I had to go to fundraisers and political
events with my family (that includes a sister and two brothers).
But this rarified world of politics did have an everlasting effect on
young Conrad even if it was by proxy. “In college I realized I had adsorbed
some of my father’s communication and relationship skills
that were helpful in life and in school.”
Conrad was involved in the Indiana University Inter-fraternity
Council and was an officer of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. The
exemplary leadership skills he saw early in life helped shape Conrad’s
future in many ways.
He has been described as an even-tempered, calm collaborator
who has the smarts and know-how to get the job done. As the Director
of Government Affairs for Simon Property Group, Conrad worked
with the local community to deal with issues during mall construction.
There were traffic components as well as real estate, finance and
inner-office politics. Conrad worked for Simon Property Group for
seven years and was proactive and amendable for both the private
and public sectors.
According to those who know him, Conrad is always up for any task.
“One of Jeb’s strongest attributes is his ability to bring people together
from various constituencies and perspectives, keeping the dialogue
positive and moving forward,” said Scott Fuson, Retired Corporate
Vice President Marketing and Sales for Dow Corning Corp.
Marketing is another of Conrad’s strong suits. In Indianapolis he
worked with the chamber of commerce business leaders to come
up with economic development programs and solutions for economic
growth. They also addressed real estate needs, financial
incentives and workforce needs related to facilitate growth in the
community.
“Even though I am a face from the outside I have the experience and
knowledge of what works, what doesn’t work and what may not have
been tried. I have a fresh set of eyes coming from the outside.”
His outside status will not last for long. Conrad’s short-term goal is
to meet with 100 members of the chamber in 100 days. “I want to get
feedback from members and get a feel for the community I represent.
I also want to be able to give a detailed plan alongside the big picture.”
He does however have an initial impression of our town – and it’s
positive all the way. Staying positive and not shooting from the hip are
some of Conrad’s signature personality traits.
One of his mentors – who taught him an important life lesson – is
Jim Morris, President of the Lilly Endowment Fund for community
giving Indiana and CEO of the NBA Pacers.
“From Jim I learned about community pride and engagement. I also
learned about being a servant and a leader, which is important – not
just to the community, but to you as a person. If you don’t learn this,
you are missing out in life.”
From Herb Simon, CEO of Simon Property Group, he learned you
can be successful in business and still be a compassionate human being.
“Herb was the CEO of the largest Mall Developer in the world and
he was the nicest guy. He listened to me and when I was only in my
20s, it taught me that my thoughts were valuable.”
Now that Conrad is a few decades past his 20s his thoughts are still
considered to be valuable to those around him.
And because of that the citizens and businesses of Delray Beach
should be very happy.
“I am fortunate to know Jeb Conrad professionally and as a friend.
His concern for people’s well-being has always stood out. His passion
to help people extends to his personal and work life. He is widely respected
in the economic development world and is constantly working
to empower and educate businesses he works with. Jeb forges
connections and follows through to help businesses and communities
grow.” said the Mayor of Kokomo, Greg Goodnight.
Welcome to Delray Beach, Jeb Conrad.
IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE
Homemade Food That Delights The Senses
Passion fans the flame of
greatness. When we live our
lives and our occupations with
passion the results are clearly
spectacular.
milk and cookies prepared by Michael and AnnaGabriella’s Key Lime pie
It doesn’t mean that life is perfect all the time. But you can feel the
difference when those around you have a passion for what they do.
Michel Menna is one of those people. The owner-chef of Il Contadino
in Pineapple Grove is driven to perfection behind the scenes
in the kitchen. You can feel it the moment you dive into one of his
specially prepared dishes. It’s apparent that his passion has infused
your plate with greatness.
You might feel like licking the plate (go ahead, we won’t look) because
of the incredible flavor in the nightly specials. Take the fresh
Branzino with caramelized Campari tomatoes in a light wine sauce
with roasted potatoes and a bit of cheese. The dish comes decorated
with tulips and roasted zucchini. It’s easy to make good seafood dishes
with a creative flair, but there is something extra special about a
dish that makes you want to jump for joy.
Cooking has been at the forefront of Menna’s consciousness since
he could reach the table (maybe before that). “This is what I have
done my entire life. I would create special creations and my parents
would come home and ask who catered this meal. I could barely
reach the stove yet I loved cooking as a child. It’s my creative outlet.”
And what an outlet he has. Like spark plugs on a car, Menna ignites
his passion for combining ingredients like a pro. You can tell by the
taste of the dishes set before you. The sauces are light – which we
think is important – and the flavors are artfully combined like a synchronized
symphony.
mushrooms stuffed with baked brie
House cured Salmon
Apparently, the word is out.
Just recently Menna hosted 40 guests for an elaborate brunch usually
only seen at 5-Star hotels. Everything on the menu was homemade
and food flowed from inside and outside on the European-style
patio. There were baked frittatas with spinach and vegetables or
with meats such as sausage, bacon and ham. There was also corned
beef hash, eggs Benedict with spinach, sculptured fruit bowls, roasted
potatoes, house cured salmon, flowing mimosas and more.
Dorothy Hernandez hosted this feast. “My cousin was celebrating
his 90th birthday and Il Contadino was the perfect venue for our
weekend of gastronomic pleasures. The frittatas, French toast, bacon,
potatoes, great coffee, juice, fruit, pastries, and more - were all
terrific. We especially liked the smoked salmon, which was personally
prepared by Michel...it was so-o-o-o delicious! We were all delighted
with the meal. Chef Michel did an excellent job and surpassed
my expectations.”
Alicia Feldman from Scarsdale recently attended a dinner party for
25 at Il Contadino in honor of Lyndsey Roth’s Bat Mitzvah. She felt
the same way as Hernandez.
“I felt like we were in Tuscany. The ambiance at Il Contadino was
beautiful and the food was even better. We had baked Ziti, Penne
Vodka, Chicken Piccata, Buffalo Mozzarella and meatballs. The
creamy baked Ziti and flavorful Meatballs were the best I’ve ever had.
Everything was delicious,” said Feldman, who declared Il Contadino
a ‘must try.’
The reason for this fanfare and delight is because the food at Il Contadino
is prepared fresh on the spot with tender loving care. Nothing
is pre-made or frozen and all dishes are custom made to perfection.
The specials of the day will really astound you. Served in large platters,
that are almost as big as the table – these feasts are reminiscent
of the ancient Greek gastronomy food orgies. One of our favorites is
the Double Cut Pork Chops pounded thin and breaded. It was topped
off with baby greens, red onions, Kalamata olives and tomatoes. It
was lightly breaded, tender and flavorful beyond our expectations.
Joe Cantina was wowed by this light, yet hearty dish. The newcomer
to Il Contadino was elated at the taste and lightness of the
dish with its fresh and concise preparation. “This dish is wonderful.
The breading doesn’t overwhelm the pork chops and the greens
and dressing soaked into the pork making it flavorful beyond belief.
I never eat Pork Chops, but this tasted so much like veal I couldn’t tell
the difference. This is really a great restaurant.”
There are other supersized superb specials as well. There’s a
5-pound cowboy Ribeye Steak on a platter with onions, Hollandaise
sauce, mushrooms, red onions, homemade mashed potatoes with
gorgonzola cheese and fresh floral adornment.
But it’s the cured salmon that really has everyone swooning. “The
House cured salmon was out of this world – nothing like I’ve tasted.
It whetted my appetite for what was to follow. It was all excellent,”
added Cantina.
James of Delray Beach had a similar experience. “This is my favorite
restaurant in South Florida. Michel the Chef/Owner has the largest
wine selection in any Restaurant I’ve been to. The food is all made
to order and is the best in Delray. If you’re ever in Delray you owe it to
yourself to stop in and have dinner at Il Contadino. Want something
you don’t see on the menu? No problem. Michel will prepare anything
you want, any way you want it. Michel is a most gracious host
and goes out of his way to make your dining experience memorable.”
The desserts are also special. The Cookies and Milk was an elaborate
combination of a thick chocolate chip cookie-muffin immersed
in milk with cookies surrounding the glass.
Come to Il Contadino. The food is fresh, and the dining experience
is top notch. Call ahead if you want a special dish.
The intimate European style patio and is just icing on the cake of
perfection. Michel welcomes all to experience his culinary passion.
misc | ask the petxpert
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
Do Our Pets Suffer From Dementia
And Other Human Conditions?
We have witnessed a dramatic change in the behavior and
health challenges in our pets over the past few decades. In
younger pets, simple training issues such as basic obedience
and housebreaking are becoming much more challenging. In kittens,
litter box training is becoming more difficult.
As our pets mature, we are now observing much more stress and
anxiety issues such as separation and noise anxiety that manifest
themselves as destructive behavior. Loud noises, thunderstorms and
strangers often set our pets into fight or flight, cower and hide or go
into separation anxiety mode.
As they get into the later years, we are witnessing disorientation,
lethargy, lack of energy and those blank stares into space. Often accompanying
this are “accidents” in the house, incontinence, as well as
unresponsiveness to training or commands.
Are these neurological issues similar to what we see in our pet parents
and family members? Unacceptable or challenging behaviors in
our children and young people, sedentary and addictive behavior in
mid-life and of course dementia, Alzheimer Syndrome, incontinence
and memory loss in later life are ever challenging us today. Cognitive
dysfunction occurs for several reasons including mineral deficiencies
and the resulting hormonal imbalances which can cause an accumulation
of abnormal proteins in the brain. Plaque is produced that eventually
damages nerves resulting in the loss of brain function, memory,
motor functions and learned behaviors.
You can observe that the same patterns of these conditions are happening
both in people and our pets at almost alarming rates. Unfortunately,
our pets have the lack of verbalization to express how they
feel which makes our understanding and responses more challenging.
This leads the pet parent to explore the causes and diagnoses to costly
testing, evaluations and treatment plans. Again, all this is very subjective
as our pets cannot articulate their reactions to various therapies.
As these same conditions exist in both our pets and ourselves, we
can conclude that the majority is not genetic as there is no direct exchange
of genetic material between ourselves and our pets. There is
however, a very direct environmental link in that we share our homes
and yards with our pets. We are now sharing everything from lawn
chemicals, food additives, cleaning products and a whole host of other
environmental toxins, endocrine disrupters, nutritional deficiencies
and imbalances with our pets.
The physiologic symptoms tell us that yes, our pets are suffering
from these same health and behavior issues for frequently the same
reason. There are significant differences in pets and people. We can
articulate our changes and challenges as well as our responses to corrective
treatments while it is basically a guessing game with our pets.
This can make treating a pet more costly as they cannot express their
responses. We have to wait and observe.
If we use the knowledge of the cause, we can then approach prevention
and improvement through limiting exposure to as many toxins
as possible, chelating and detoxifying through an ongoing process of
utilizing species appropriate clean foods which include herbs and botanicals
that provide micro nutrients and detoxification. The body is
the sum of everything that goes into it. Breathe, drink, and eat as clean
as possible, avoid the contaminates including drugs and both our pets
and ourselves can avoid these life challenges.
Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta
Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe.com
vision and information which we pass to our clients daily. We can be reached
