Welcome to our North Country,
and the First Wilderness
Heritage Corridor
You will notice that the businesses and organizations participating
in our guide represent small businesses, organizations
and entrepreneurs. They are the strength of our economy, they
hold our communities together, they work tirelessly to give
you the very best in services.
Each town, village, hamlet in this guide is unique because
of its history and natural characteristics, each has a story to
tell you. While you’re here relax, kick back, and enjoy the
people of the North Country.
Top 10 Reasons to Support Locally
Owned Businesses
1. Local Character and Prosperity –In an increasingly
homogenized world, communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses
and distinctive character have an economic advantage.
2. Community Well-Being –Locally owned businesses build
strong communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, linking neighbors in a
web of economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes.
3. Local Decision-Making –Local ownership ensures that important
decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will
feel the impacts of those decisions.
4. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy –Compared to
chain stores, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue
back into the local economy, enriching the whole community.
5. Job and Wages –Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally
and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.
6. Entrepreneurship –Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic
innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of
low-wage jobs and into the middle class.
7. Public Benefits and Costs –Local stores in town centers
require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public
services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.
8. Environmental Sustainability –Local stores help to sustain
vibrant, compact, walkable town centers-which in turn are essential to reducing
sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.
9. Competition –A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses
is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.
10. Product Diversity –A multitude of small businesses, each
selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests
and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of
product choices.
— About The Corridor —
Established in 1999 as a way to boost tourism, the First
Wilderness Heritage Corridor was designed to highlight
the attractions, events, outdoor activities and businesses
along the railroad corridor between Saratoga Springs and
North Creek. With a memorandum of understanding - the
railway spans two counties, Saratoga and Warren, and follows
the Hudson River north as it did when it ?rst opened
as Thomas Durant’s Adirondack Railroad in 1871.
There are currently two aspects of implementing the
First Wilderness experience. First planners have to answer
the question, “What can people do when they come here?”
Then there is the physical side - the infrastructure - such as
improving streetscapes, constructing train stations, or developing
waterfront parks.
The First Wilderness Heritage Corridor program is
primarily managed by Wayne LaMothe, County Planner
for the Warren County Planning Department. LaMothe
approaches he First Wilderness Heritage Corridor project
with one goal in mind: enhancing the economic opportunities
by creating a corridor-wide tourism experience. “When
it all comes down to it, it’s an economic development activity,”
LaMothe said. “There’s no other reason for it. It is
to enhance what the community has A) for itself and B) for
the visitors that come here. Hopefully, it’s a quality experience
and through word-of-mouth and promotions, other
people will follow.”
Yet, in order to be successful, the corridor needs to
be promoted as a whole, and not on a town-by-town basis.
“The way for this to work is each town has to complement
each other and not compete,” LaMothe said. Promotion
of the Corridor focuses on coordinating efforts that
will showcase each town’s attributes and the Corridor to
potential visitors.
But it’s the “First Wilderness” experience that sets
this region apart. It was the ?rst place where Americans
realized that wilderness was going to be a distinguishing
and permanent feature of their civilization. By the 1880s,
more had been written about the Adirondacks than any
other wilderness area in America. In 1892, the Adirondack
Park was created as the largest protected wilderness area
east of the Mississippi. Since then, the Park has challenged
each generation to define the role of wilderness in our increasingly
urbanized civilization.
Today, there is a concerted effort to create a genuine
Adirondack experience for the visitors to the corridor.
The communities of the First Wilderness Heritage Corridor
invite all to experience the wilderness way of life.
Corinth, NY By Pam Morin
Corinth, NY is an Upper Hudson River waterfront
community, south of Hadley and Lake Luzerne
and 15 minutes from Queensbury and Glens
Falls, with three miles of flat water, allowing watersports
to capture the hearts of both resident and
summer visitors.
These clean clear waters add to the centerpiece
of this quaint town and village.
To highlight this peaceful attraction, the community
has created a wonderful series of parks
that are conjoined by an easy stroll from the beach
along the walkway allowing for family picnics,
reunions and special events to be a common practice.
The very popular Pagenstecher Park screams
of adventure as its high rise picnic area hangs
above sheer cliffs known as palisades. These are
the only palisades on the 350 mile Hudson River
besides those on the northern New Jersey shoreline
banks just before entering in to the Atlantic
Ocean.
A park visitor in the Village walking along the
river can also be very captivated by the extreme
drop in elevation and the dramatic 90 degree angle
eastward that the river takes as it passes by the
old pulp mill and heads to Queensbury and Glens
Falls.
In days gone by, the railway system spurred
from the pulp mill and shirt factories in town to
the main line as product was transported south to
the metropolitan areas.
The military pride in Corinth in always accented and the Town Hall
Veteran’s Memorial and Park are true examples of their heritage and
history. The Honor Roll in front of Town Hall reflects all those In Active
Duty and the Civil War Monument that stands vigil at Town Hall.
Corinth also has program honoring World War Veterans. On November
14th at the Corinth High School auditorium, we will be holding
our Veterans Day celebration.
There is plenty to do in this community as the watersports top the
chart, while special events, hunting, fishing, hiking , biking, snowshoeing
and summer music concerts come in second. Above all, and taking
first place would be the leisure world of camping in the Adirondack
Mountains by the river or lake sweeps away the blues as the repeat
fresh air lovers spend every minute they can get away to rejuvenate in
the small community.
The arrival of the railroad to Corinth was one of the big events in
the history of the community.
With it came the telegraph, and Corinth was brought hours nearer
to the big world centers.
The twenty-five miles to Hadley was completed by 1865. The
building of the railroad has to be one of the more important historical
events in the development and progress of the Town and Village of
Corinth.accented and the Town Hall Veteran’s Memorial and Park are
true examples of their heritage and history..
Corinth – Still Celebrating 200 Years
Corinth is a quaint
little town in Saratoga
County, Upstate New York.
The Hudson River winds
peacefully through Corinth,
making it a favorite vacation
spot for tourists of all seasons
looking for a place that has
swimming, boating, fishing,
waterskiing, beautiful
fall foliage, snow skiing,
snowshoeing, and much more
all centrally located. In the
extreme southwestern corner
of Corinth is the famous
Mount McGregor, where
Gen. Ulysses S. Grant died.
Come enjoy the serenity of
Corinth, and still be only
15 minutes from all the
fast paced attractions and
entertainment offered in
neighboring communities
of Saratoga, Glens Falls, and
Lake George.
I.P. Museum. This building was the first headquarters
of International Paper Company, Corinth, NY. It later
became the offices for the Mill Managers of Hudson
River Mill. The downstairs became the time office for
the then 1500 employees to punch their timeclocks
in and out for their respective shifts and pick up their
paychecks.
When International Paper Company closed its
doors in 2002, the town of Corinth asked to have
the building donated to the Town to serve as a papermaking
museum. After several years this did happen,
and the Town has begun the slow process of making
the museum a reality on the National Historic Roll.
Summer programs have been scheduled there.
we’d say the glass is half full. This is an industry that continues to flow
and pump more unique flavor into the area.
That’s why the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce and
Convention and Visitors Bureau was thrilled to accept the Adirondack
Craft Beverage Trail program from the Adirondack Regional Chamber
of Commerce in May 2018.
This program was launched in the summer of 2014 and continues
to thrive with breweries, wineries, distilleries and cideries on the trail
from Saratoga to Lake Placid.
These high-quality
craft beverage makers attract
visitors from around
the globe. We feel fortunate
to have them in our
back yard. When it comes
to beer — the fresher the
better! Experience farmto-bottle
flavor as the makers
use local ingredients
in their beverages. Our
region also offers numerous
transportation options
so you can enjoy yourself
responsibly. For more information,
Nice Liquid Since 1999!
The Adirondack Pub & Brewery tapped their first keg in 1999.
They have since grown to producing nearly 10,000 barrels of their
handcrafted ales and lagers annually. With recently announced expansion
plans, the brewery’s capacity will triple. Adirondack Brewery
contributes its success to consistently producing quality beer
brewed with local ingredients and bedrock spring water free from
minerals and impurities.
Adirondack Brewery
brews over 30 unique beers
annually including yearround,
seasonal, and one-off
offerings. “Our brewers have
an excitement for their craft
that is reflecting in their creativity
and endless research
in discovering new tastes
and brewing techniques”,
said owner John Carr.
New for 2018, High Peaks Distilling, located across the way from
the brewery, produces world-class spirits using traditional Scottish
techniques. After decades of brewing and perfecting the complex art
of malt fermentation, the next step was obvious; why not take the
love of malt to the next level and produce thought-provoking malt
whiskey.
This includes their first release, an award-winning single-malt
whiskey, Cloudsplitter. Named after the tallest peak in the Adirondacks,
Mt. Marcy, lives up to its namesake by delivering a fresh, clean
taste. Their use of multiple casks rounds out the taste with a subtle
sweetness backed by the complexity of European and American Oak.
Cloudsplitter can currently be found at numerous, high-quality restaurants
and bars in the Lake George region.
The tasting room and distillery will be opening to the public in
early summer and will offer tours, tastings, and bottles available for
purchase. Learn more about the distillery by going to HPDistilling.
Lake George is Bicycle Friendly
Residents and visitors to the Southern Adirondacks have discovered
some great cycling. The Warren County Bikeway, a 10 foot wide
paved and landscaped County bike path was completed in 1978. This
destination bike path begins in Lake George Village’s Westbrook
Park and passes through 10.5 miles of Southern Adirondack scenery
to Queensbury, where it passes over Quaker Road and links riders to
the Feeder Canal System. Combined, the two bikeway system will
offer visitors and residents twenty plus miles of “destination” bicycle
riding opportunities.
Historically, the path follows many of the old historic routes and
transportation roads. The history of this military road is one of bloodshed.
The road generally followed the present Route 9 and turned
toward Blind Rock, a site of Indian torture, burning of captives, and
Indian encampment.
In 1848 a plank road was laid by Glens Falls and Lake George
Plank Road Co. It too followed the existing road plan. Two toll gates
were set up along the way, the toll trip to Lake George cost a horse
and rider about twelve cents.
Stagecoaches followed, and in the 1870’s passengers traveled 75
minutes and paid $1.25 to bump along the worn road. Rail line followed
electric trolleys and the ensuing automobiles dealt the final
death knell to them all. The rail line was torn up the right of way sold
in 1957. In September of 1977 Warren County began the process of
creating a bike path on the D&H Railroad right-of-way.
Welcome to Lake George! Whether you’ve come for a nice relaxing
vacation or want to discover all the Adirondack region has to
offer, what better way to experience the area than on a bicycle? Take
a comfortable ride along the 10-mile-long paved Warren County bike
trail through Lake George, Queensbury and in to Glens Falls or take
a nice leisurely ride around town. No matter what you’re guaranteed
a great experience.
At Lake George Bike Rentals helmets and locks are included with
every bike rental and a major credit card is needed for security deposit.
Delivery is free for all multiple day rentals within a 10-mile
radius of Lake George Village. Visit their website for their address
and pricing.
BOLTON LANDING
ON LAKE GEORGE
Today, Diamond Point and the village of Bolton Landing
offer vacationers and residents alike a myriad of recreational opportunities.
Sailing, boating, diving, swimming, fishing, tennis and other
activities can be enjoyed while overlooking the lake and mountains.
While these activities are open to all today, the area has a rich history as
the playground of the rich and famous. Many of homes along the Bolton
Road’s “Millionaire’s Row” survive to this day.
During the golden era of the 1800s, the area was populated with summer
estates and hotels offering a sophisticated summer experience for the
wealthy vacationer who traveled by rail, stagecoach and lake steamer to relax
in the cool mountain air at the shores of this impressive lake.
One of the earliest
accommodations was
Mohican Point, erected
in 1800 to serve travelers.
In 1856 the tavern
was sold and upgraded,
opening as a hotel called
the Mohican House.
It managed to cater to
an affluent clientele in
spite of the fact that it
was smaller and had fewer amenities than hotels like the 600-
room Fort William Henry in Lake George Village. Bolton Chamber of
lake luzerne
Originally, Luzerne was part of the “Town of Queensbury
Tract” beyond the mountain at its western edge (their west part
of town), and the place was called Westfield, which was obligated
to stand on its own feet and organize itself into a township. At the
end of the Revolutionary War with England, Westfield became
known as Fairfield and incorporated as a township on April 10,
1792 when the town of Queensbury relinquished their ‘west’ tract.
The Town later became known as Luzerne until 1963 when Lake
was added to Luzerne to form its present name of Lake Luzerne.
For the history buffs this
summer season will include
local history events with reenactors,
displays, speakers
and cowboys on July 28, with
Ambassadors on duty at the
Rockwell-Harmon Cottage
and visitor center, the Gailey
Hill School House, the Kinnear
House Museum of Local
History and the Pagenstecher Pulp Mill Museum. During July
and August the four historic sites
along Main Street will be staffed
with Ambassadors from Thursdays
to Sundays 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
All museums are within a
three-block walking distance.
You will fall in love with our
past, present and future, especially
along the Indian Trail from the
river to the lake.
This leisurely stroll between “Museums on Main Street” is a
village delight and very pet friendly. The real treat is being surrounded
by flowing waters from Lake Luzerne to Wells Creek
to the Mighty Hudson River’s narrowest and most picturesque
location - Rockwell Falls. it’s
breathtaking and a photo shoot
moment from the Bridge of
Hope, but the roar of the falls
is most enchanting from the
shoreline behind the Rockwell-
Harmon Cottage; it’s a perfect
spot to relax and enjoy an ice
cream cone. Additional highlighted
attractions include the
year-round Adirondack
Folk School for the joy
of hands-on learning the arts,
crafts and customs of the Adirondacks.
All classes of music
are offered during the summer
in Lake Luzerne. There are concerts by students and professionals
at the world renown Luzerne Music Camp, and free Tuesday
Night Concerts at Colonel Butler Pavilion Park.
For those looking for outdoor adventure, Lake Luzerne is fast
becoming known as “Adventure Row” it’s the place for thrills and
chills. With plenty of opportunities and activities for river paddling,
Where Friends &
Waters Meet
Come to Lake Luzerne, just 10 minutes
south of Lake George Village. Here,
the Hudson River squeezes into a narrow
gorge, tumbling over the dramatic Rockwell
Falls. Water from the Great Sacandaga
Lake joins the river in a flurry of white water.
Further downstream, the river widens
into “The Bay,” a stretch of water broad
enough for water skiing. For those who
seek quiet water, a chain of four beautiful
lakes offer fishing, camping and boating
with two public swimming beaches on
Lake Luzerne itself.
Lake Luzerne has catered to visitors since President Grant
came to the area for rest and
recreation after the Civil War.
The grand old hotels of that
day have given way to modern
inns and restaurants while
new tennis and basketball
courts, miniature golf and four
local history museums, along
with summer concerts and
craft shows, offer a variety of
family fun.
Nearby, Lake Luzerne Music
camp attracts world-class
musicians. In winter, snowmobilers
can ride over 200 miles
of forest trails. Signs for the
Adirondack Folk School
(AFS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
charitable organization, unique
for its dedication to teaching the
arts, crafts, and cultural heritage
of the Adirondack region. Made
up of local artisans, crafts people,
and volunteers, we offer noncompetitive
education focusing
on the student. Located in Lake
Luzerne, NY, we are situated in
the southern Adirondack Park,
a State park of over six-million
acres of “forever wild” protected
land. The beauty and natural
abundance of this environment influenced the skilled artisans that
created the pack basket, twig furniture, birch bark containers,
the Adirondack chair, the guide boat, and the Adirondack leanto.
These are the home furnishings, boats, and decor still found
in cabins, lodges, and homes today throughout the region which
have helped create the unique “Adirondack Style”. Today, our region
hosts these and numerous other creative forms of expression.
Our instructors from around the country share their knowledge
and skills, and inspire you with their enthusiasm.
In addition to our hands-on classes, Adirondack storytellers
and musicians share the cultural heritage of the Adirondacks
through demonstrations, special programs, and our fireside evening
gatherings.
The Fire Tower Challenge
Whether it’s the view from the summit or from the tower--or the experiences in route--”fire tower fever” grips you right away and there’s no turning
back. The Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) created the Fire Tower Challenge to encourage hikers to appreciate
fire towers, their history and the peaks where they are located.
What is the Fire Tower Challenge?
The Fire Tower Challenge began with the publication of the guidebook, ‘Views from on
High: Fire Tower Trails in the Adirondacks and Catskills’ by John P. (Jack) Freeman. The Challenge
hikes are described in detail, along with a fascinating essay describing the history of Forest
Preserve fire towers by noted historic preservationist Wesley H. Haynes. The book is published
by the ADK Mountain Club.
To buy Views from on High call 1-800-395-8080 (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Mon through Sat.),
visit the Club’s Lake George or Heart Lake facilities or purchase online from the ADK Mountain
Club Online Store, It is also available from bookstores and outdoor retailers. In North Creek,
Hudson River Trading Company typically carries the book. You don’t need to be a member of
ADK to take part in the Challenge.
Rules of the Fire Tower Challenge:
To complete the Challenge and receive the official full-color patch,
hikers must climb and document, by date, ascents of at least 23 fire
tower summits: 18 of 23 Adirondack Park summits and all 5 Catskill
Park summits. Climbing each tower itself is not required, nor in fact
recommended, for those towers that have not been restored for safe
public use.
The mountain should have a standing fire tower on the date of
your ascent. Two of the Adirondack towers described in Views from
on High have been removed—see list on reverse. When registering
the dates of your climb, be sure to use extra sheets of paper to describe
details of interest: weather, wildlife sightings, your impressions, your
companions - and whatever else caught your attention. We really want
you to share your experiences with us, so please be expressive.
In the most northern part of Saratoga Country, at the confluence of the Great
town of hadley
A phrase from one of Robert Frost’s poems,
“I took the road less traveled by and that made
all the difference” certainly describes the hamlet
of Hadley nestled at the confluence of the
mighty Hudson River and the Great Sacandaga
Rivers.
The Bridge of Hope with the American Flags
waving in the wind spans the mighty Hudson
River connecting Lake Luzerne to Hadley. This
is the narrowest spot of the Hudson River causing
it to tumble and fall from the rock ledges
creating Rockwell Falls. For generations the
force of water has provided water-power to operate lumber, paper,
and grist mills along its banks.
The southern view from the Bridge of Hope is where the
Sacandaga River roars in from the west to join the mighty Hudson
River from the east. The Sacandaga River once cut a path like
a shoelace, back and forth in the Sacandaga Valley finding each
spring overflowing its banks causing flooding to down state residents
in Troy and the Capital District. In the 1930’s a remarkable
engineering project of an earthen dam was constructed at Conklinville
to control the rising flow of water, thereby, creating the
Great Sacandaga Lake, the largest man-made body of water in
New York State and some of the best whitewater. Today, many
enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, and skiing on the flat-water
lake, while others enjoy the thrill of whitewater rafting on the
Sacandaga River below Stewarts Dam.
Spanning the Sacandaga River is the 1885 historic parabolic
Bow Bridge (shown in photo on previous page). It was rescued
from demolition and restored to use in 2006. It’s fun to drive over
to the the Dean Mountain Whitewater Park for a picnic lunch to
watch the rafters on the best regulated whitewater in New York
State or to explore the nature trail charted by the local Boy Scouts.
While on the road less taken, another park to discover is the
Sam Smead Memorial Park located at the corner of Stony Creek
Rd and Maple Street. Besides pavilions, play ground equipment,
picnic tables and grills, tennis and basketball courts there will be
summer music performances conducted most Friday nights at
7pm during July and August. All are welcome to attend the free
Hike the Hadley Mountain Fire Tower trail which affords
spectacular views ranging from the Sacandaga valley to Vermont,
the Catskills, and to both the southern
Adirondacks and their northern high
pecks. By following the red trail markers
and an ascent of 1,525’ leads to the fire
tower where a summit steward, working
on an internship and hired by the Hadley
Mountain Fire Tower Committee
may greet you. Starting the first of June
the steward will spend the majority of
the summer engaging and telling hikers
about the history and characteristics of
the Adirondack Park and Hadley Mountain
Fire Tower. When not greeting the
public, the steward helps maintain and repair the trail and structures
under the supervision of the local forest ranger and stays in
the primitive quarters of the old ranger cabin, which can be seen
just prior to the final turn up to the summit
and its restored fire tower.
3.1 miles left onto Hadley Hill Rd. 4.3 miles right onto Tower Rd,
take a sharp left hand turn onto N. Strawberry Lane, the parking
Hadley’s less traveled roads will lead you to a community of
cottage industries. Discover and learn the making of Adirondack
Aquaponics, a fresh produce farm, where the combination of
aquaculture (raising Tilapia fish) and hydroponics
to raise plants of lettuce whose
roots are nourished in highly-filtered-nutrientrich
herbs are grown. Or come in the spring
to experience the making of maple syrup
and enjoy the annual Maple in April Festival
held the last weekend of April with
over 80 artisans and vendors.
August is a busy month planned with a scheduled softball There’s much to discover and explore on the road less traveled
tournament fundraiser and fireworks, the Community-wide Garage
in the quaint little town of Hadley. You won’t find big industry
Sale, and the Hadley Business Association’s Third Thursday there, but you’ll find a wonderful place to breathe fresh air, climb
Stony Creek – The Road to
a Friendly Town is Never Long
The “Biggest Little Town” in
NY State has more than thirty
thousand acres of Forest Preserve
waiting for hikers, hunters and
campers. Fresh mountain streams
feed into Stony Creek and the
Hudson River, where native brook
trout seek out the fisherman’s lure.
Horseback riding trails wend their
way through the woods, providing
spectacular views of the southern
Adirondacks.
At the heart of Stony Creek,
the 4 Corners, also known as
Creek Center, offers great food,
entertainment and basic amenities.
Choose from a range of prices and
features at local campgrounds,
guesthouses, inns, and lodges.
Along the winding roads, look for
natural mountain water springs
to quench your thirst. Bring your
family to a campground on Stony
Creek, or enjoy the public park for
a cook-out next to the old fashioned
swimming hole. Truly a place to
get away, Stony Creek boasts fresh
mountain air and a quiet reprieve.
The town celebrates its heritage
through the annual Stony Creek
Mountain Days Festival the first
full weekend in August. Music in
the Park is offered Tuesday evenings
in July and August. Visit the
information lean-to at Creek Center
directly to the Hudson. The town
was first settled in 1795 and then
incorporated in 1853 enclosing 82.4
square miles. Known to many where
long.” The east town line is marked
by the Hudson River and the west
town line is the border of Hamilton
County. The newly constructed
railway pavilion is located at the
Stony Creek Ranch Resort where
scenic train operations are seasonal.
The Hudson River Watershed
All Warren County townships have a
portion of their land that drains into
the Upper Hudson River.
Stony Creek is one of 4 towns to
have all of its land in the Hudson
River Watershed. Stony Creek the
stream, drains nearly 50% of that
land mass. A few of the waters that
form Stony Creek are Lens Lake,
Roaring Branch, Smears Creek,
Willis Creek and Kenyontown
Creek. Stony Creek merges into
the Hudson, south of the old
The Dean Farm Trails –
With the support of Warren County Department of Planning
and Community Development Director Wayne LaMothe, towns
such as Stony Creek have been able to secure funding to create
infrastructure projects that help promote the Corridor to tourists.
Visitors will find that Stony Creek has creation a trail system
around the Dean Homestead Museum at 4 Murray Road. In the
1990’s about 8 acres of the old Dean farm on the west side of
Murray Road (creek side) was bequeathed to the Stony Creek
Historical Association to be a museum, and 217 acres on the
east and west side of the road was bequeathed to the SUNY-ESF
Foundation by David and Edyth Haskell. Edyth Haskell was a
direct descendant of Francis J. Dean.
Phase 1 was the establishment of a 1.3 mile ADA compliant
trail around the museum and along the creek. Phase 2, located
on the east side of Murray Road on the SUNY ESF Foundation
property are approximately 4 miles of more rugged hiking trails.
Phase 1 and 2 are largely complete with amenities and interest
points to be added as time goes on. It will continue to be a work
in progress.
The town has embarked upon a third phase of this project with
the purchase of 8 acres of property at 13 Lanfear Road. This property
is directly across the road from the Dean Homestead Museum.
This will enable the continuation of the Dean trail system
with the intent of a connection to Creek Center. The property also
sits adjacent to the town’s current park, Green Meadows. A foot
bridge will be established over the creek to connect the new property
and the Dean Trails with the Green Meadows Park.
Discussion and planning on other uses of this property are ongoing,
and include overflow parking for large events such as the
annual Mountain Days Festival, a library/community center that
will accommodate large and small groups of people for a multitude
of uses, such as plays, concerts, arts and crafts workshops,
conferences, book signings, nature programs, creek side water
ecology, gardens and greenhouses, and possibility a museum depicting
the town’s history of logging and tanneries. The goal is to
create a destination that attracts visitors to our area and the First
Wilderness Corridor and provides them with activities to do and
things to see. The more people that visit, the more opportunities
expand for businesses to offer services and products, making for
a memorable experience people will want to repeat.
A few years ago the Stony Creek Free Library (SCFL) acquired
the neighboring historic Methodist Episcopal Church located
at 33 Harrisburg Road in Stony Creek, New York. Although
original plans to relocate the library fell through, a great new venture
is underway. Building on the passion for a strong community
and love of the arts that previous members worked hard to create
and grow, the Library is taking steps to transform the “Church”
space into an artist hub for locals and visitors alike as the new
Stony Creek Free Library’s ARTirondacks Gallery/Shop/Studio!
In February of 2018 the
SCFL approved an Art Director
position to initiate
the transformation of the
building and manage the
future scheduling of artists
and events at this new location.
The immediate plan
is to get the Main Floor of
the building ready to open
to the public as a seasonal
Gallery/Shop/Studio, extending to encompass the entire building
yearlong as time moves forward to have a space for all in support
of practicing, viewing, and purchasing art, both from local and
visiting artists.
This summer the SCFL will focus on opening its doors for
Open Studio hours and volunteer efforts. As time moves forward,
and support and funding grows the Library plans to move the Studio
space downstairs and to expand the Shop and Gallery to fill
all of the Main Floor. A positive meeting with the Building and
Electrical Inspectors has pushed this project forward at a faster
pace than originally anticipated, and the Library is entertaining a
light Summer Opening. Serving as storage for the Library’s annual
Book Sale for the last few years, a plethora of literature is
ironically the greatest obstacle at the moment. Until the books and
pews can be purchased/rehoused setting up the Shop space will
most likely have to wait until next Spring.
To ensure the project is moving
forward work will begin soon
on rewiring to accommodate future
electrical needs and applying
a fresh coat of paint to the walls.
A careful effort is being made to
maintaining the original beauty
of the building and scaling back
alterations to focus on just the necessities
at this time. The historical
status of this building allowed the plan to be streamlined as some
projects did not need to be immediately addressed for the building
to be open to the public.
Town of Thurman – Where Nature is a Way of Life
Roads leading into Thurman
twists along rivers, whose
serpentine courses compel you
to slow down, step back from
daily cares and be present in this
time and place. The Hudson
River, our boundary on the
east, entices anglers, swimmers,
canoeists. rafters and kayakers,
each enjoying the Hudson in
his own way, and on his own
schedule.
Thurman’s hilly forests call
out to birders, equestrians,
hikers, hunters, rock hounds
and naturalists. In winter,
snowmobile enthusiasts enjoy
the miles of trails maintained
and groomed by Thurman
Connection, the snowmobile
club.
The Hudson lures fishermen, swimmers, and boaters of all types.
Local outfitters can set you up for a day of rafting, canoeing, kayaking or
tubing on area rivers.
Learn more about Thurman snowmobile trails at
www.thurmanconnection.com.
Others are drawn to our back
roads seeking a special kind
of natural beauty. In April or
May, against spring’s gray-green
palette are splashed scarlet
trillium, yellow trout lily,
white bloodroot, vermillion
salamanders. Rural history is
written here as never seen in
textbooks. Here and there one
spies evidence of old homesites-
-a crumbling chimney or cellar
of mammoth stones laid up by
men clearing fields and building
a home at the same time. Gnarly
lilacs still guard the foundation
while yellowy-green daylily
spikes and crimson rhubarb
push through still-cold soil. A
nearby apple tree bows its aged
branches, a few soft, brown
apples still clinging to the highest
limbs. Once a proud provider
of pies, sauce and apple butter
for the farm larder, this tree now
feeds scavenging whitetail deer
and field mice.
of life.
Thurman – Cultivating its
Rural Heritage
Thurman has forever romanced her land and waterways. Hardy
settlers cleared thick forests to create pastures, build homes and
grow crops. They harnessed creeks to power mills for grinding grist
or sawing lumber. The woods also offered wild game and maple
sap, while streams and rivers supplied fresh water, fish, furs and
transportation.
Today, many in Thurman still
seek sustenance from nature’s
abundance, heating with wood,
and hunting and farming to help
feed their families. Many sell
their goods, both at area farmers’
markets and from home garden
stands. Some, like our many
maple producers, establish websites for
online orders.
Thurman boasts the four largest commercial maple producers in
Warren County. Hidden Hollow Maple Farm is operated by three
generations of the Wallace family, and currently boasts the highest
number of taps of the four. Valley Road Maple Farm was worked
for ove r 100 years by the Combs family and recently enlarged its
facility.
by the Kenyon family since the late 1800s. Toad Hill Maple Farm,
worked by the Galusha family for over 40 years, recently constructed
a large timber frame sugar house and added a covered bridge to
take guests on wagon rides to the sugarbush. New on our public
maple tours are Windy Ridge and Mud St. Maple All of these maple
producers make an extensive product line that includes syrup, sugar,
cream, popcorn, peanuts and candies, and often juggle “day jobs”
along with the exhausting job of sugaring. Said one, “We do what
we do because we love it.”
This passion to produce wholesome food has fueled many in
Thurman over recent decades. Since 2005, Nettle Meadow Farm
has been expanding its herd, facility and product line of internationally-acclaimed
gourmet cheeses made from sheep, goat and cow
milk. Whitefield’s Farm pioneered in the area with all-natural turkeys,
eggs and garden goods New on our farm landscape are Blackberry
Hill Farm and Sanctuary with certified organic vegetables and
herbs, poultry and non-GMO pork,
and nearby Windy Ridge Farm
LLC, which produces garden goods
and maple syrup and wooden wares
on a farm owned by one family for
over 200 years.
Many work at the traditional
Adirondack trade of logging, now
with increased attention to sustainability
of this valuable resource,
Founded at the turn of the 19th century along the Schroon River
where a 70-foot-drop in 3 miles offered opportunity for three
dams. Tanneries, sawmills, grist mills, a woolen mill and, later,
shirt and pants manufacture, provided hundreds of jobs. At the
turn of the 20th century the town boasted of municipal water and
sewer systems, and even electric streetlights. It was among the
first towns in the area to offer a free high school education to
all residents when the Warrensburgh Academy was converted, by
popular vote in 1888, to the Union Free School. A trolley line
provided cheap access to towns and cities to the south, and the
populace and industry was soon serviced by a major railroad line,
the Delaware & Hudson. You can learn all about it the Warrensburgh
Museum of Local History, with its two 72-foot long murals.
Among its native sons
was Floyd Bennett, the pilot
who flew Commander
Byrd to the North Pole, who
was awarded the Medal of
Honor, the nation’s highest
military award. U. S. Congressman
Louis Emerson
was born and bred in Warrensburg,
as was his brother,
NY State Senator James
Emerson, a long-term and
influential legislator who
helped create the New York
State highway system in the
early part of the 20th century.
Warrensburg has always been hospitable to travelers and visitors
from its earliest days when numerous hotels lined its streets.
Vacationers seeking a respite from hot cities found Warrensburg
quiet bucolic ways and mountain scenery a tonic from hectic lives.
Warrensburg continues that tradition, with several bed-and-breakfasts,
from elegant Victorian to charming farmhouses and lodges,
dude ranches and several motels
and campgrounds. Fine gourmet
dining in historic buildings, and
hometown cooking in traditional
diner settings draw visitors from
far and wide.
Warrensburg is easily accessed
via Interstate I-87 (Adirondack
roads. Old-fashioned country stores are
located in both hamlets as well as public
beaches. The picturesque Mill Pond in
Brant Lake is the perfect spot for a stroll
or picnic.
Fishing from a boat, bridge, shoreline or
the middle of the stream should satisfy
any angler. Hike trails into quiet ponds
of the southern reaches of the Pharoah
Lake Wilderness to camp, canoe, kayak
or just commune with the wonder of
nature. New this year is the Brant Lake
Bike Park at The Hub on Mill Pond.
This professionally designed mountain
bike trail system challenges riders
with 10 kilometers of trails. Winter
brings ice fishing, cross country skiing,
snowshoeing or snowmobiling on wellgroomed
trails.
The pace may be a little slower
sometimes but that’s the way we like it
and doesn’t that sound like just what
you are looking for?
The Town of Horicon is
located in the northeastern
boundary of Warren County,
settled in early 1800s and
incorporated March 29, 1838
from portions of Bolton and
Hague with total of 71.8
square miles. During the
Civil War, the town held
the proud distinction of
providing more volunteer
soldiers in proportion to the
population than any other
town in NYS with only one
man being drafted. The
Horicon Museum affords the
visitor a look into the past:
the early settlers, their homes,
churches, industries, boarding
houses and special occasions.
The displays in this restored,
19th-century farmhouse give
a glimpse into the lives of
those who lived in an earlier
time. There are many items
reflecting the local history and
the Civil War.
“Horicon is off the beaten
path of historical events, but
its development through the
spirit and help of her people is
a fine example of community
life.”
historian
johnsburg
The Historic Town of Jonsburg is a four-season Adirondack destination
located along the Hudson River and surrounding NY’s premier ski
destination—Gore Mountain. You can trace the Town of Johnsburg’s
history back to hearty settlers who made a living logging, mining and
running tanneries. Today, the Town of Johnsburg is a lively oasis and
perfect jumping off spot to explore the Adirondacks.
Year round, visitors will enjoy exploring the seven Hamlets that make
up the town—Wevertown, Riparius, Sodom, Garnet Lake, Bakers Mills,
North River and North Creek. North Creek is the most visible Town of
Johnsburg hamlet due to its Main Street with quaint shops and restaurants
The Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek offers theater, concerts
and gallery displays.
In winter, thousands of skiers trek to Gore Mountain which offers the
largest vertical drop in the eastern US. The spring thaw releases Maple
sap and the chance to see area Sugar Houses producing real Maple syrup.
The spring also brings migrating birds back to the forests and birdwatchers
flock to the area. Adventure seekers also flock to the area for the
white water rafting and kayaking on the Hudson River.
Summer brings warm days and cool nights to the region and campers,
hikers, boaters and other vacationers who find the Town of Johnsburg
is the perfect Adirondack location. Changing leaf colors transforms the
Town of Johnsburg into a fall foliage destination. Visitors can take the
Gore Mountain gondola and view the fall splendor throughout the Adirondacks.
For more information about the Town of Johnsburg, visit www.gorechamber.com
or call 518-251-2612.
“Arts Support Community at Tannery Pond”
Tannery Pond Community Center was built in 2002 to provide
residents and visitors with cultural, educational, recreational, and social
opportunities. The building was paid for by the generosity of
Woody and Elise Widlund, who gifted it to the Town of Johnsburg. It
features a state-of-the-art 160 seat auditorium with excellent acoustics,
an art exhibit space, and several meeting rooms.
Tannery Pond Center, a nonprofit organization, manages use of
the venues in the center for the Town of Johnsburg, operates the Widlund
Gallery with monthly exhibits, and presents many cultural, live
performance and educational events for all ages. It is a wonderful
place to meet, strut your stuff (artistic talents, that is), view incredible
exhibits, and attend performances by Grammy-nominees and
outstanding regional talent.
Olympic Regional Development Authority and
Town of Johnsburg Working Together to Bring
Economic Development to The Region
Gore Mountain recently amended its UMP report which includes
projects from trail widening to new lifts and upgrades to
existing facilities.
Summer 2018 work
includes enlarging of the
snowmaking pond and
improvements to the beginner
slopes. Modifications
to the traffic pattern
for shuttles are also on the
list of improvements. This
summer visitors should see
construction begun on an
extension to the Tannery
Restaurant which will allow
larger functions and
weddings, a perfect venue for hosting gatherings. Mountain administrators
have also proposed lift replacements including High
Peaks, Sunway, and Ski Bowl Chair Lift. Long term plans at Ski
Bowl Park include a zip coaster, high ropes course and tubing hill.
Gore’s General Manager James “Bone” Bayse commented
that “Gore Mountain’s unique partnership with the Town of Johnsburg
and its North Creek Ski Bowl is one that is very special to
us. The fact that visitors and residents can start and end their day
of skiing at the Bowl adds variety to their experience, and it brings
their winter adventure physically closer to the businesses of the
Gore Mountain Region. We are actively communicating with area
stakeholders about moving our summer operations there, which is
an opportunity
that could build
upon the winter
success story
already started.
There is so
much potential
for the Town of
Johnsburg, and
in working together
as a forward-thinking
community, lots that Gore Mountain and the region could accom-
and ideas are exchanged, we look forward to
furthering plans and projects.
We are making tremendous improvements to
for the 18-
we have developed for
Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan commented “As a community,
we are incredibly excited about the future of the Ski
Bowl. We have a lot happening, working closely with ORDA. She
went on to say, “More work is being done in the park to expand
the mountain biking and the trail system, and community and park
committees are working hard to ensure success for all.”
Johnsburg locals, Bob & Kelly Nessle say a project to create
a New York State Museum of Skiing & Ski Hall of Fame
in North Creek is still in the beginning stages. “The feasibility
results were fairly optimistic,” Kelly Nessle said. “It said we
would get 25,000 visitors per year.
The Olympic Region Development Authority (ORDA) has
proposed about $19 million in improvements for a portion of
the Ski Bowl Recreation Area and has estimated it would bring
about 40,000 visitors to the North Creek area in the summer.
The feasibility study projected about $1.2 million in sales at
the museum, which would also account for 17 jobs. Overall, a
museum would result in over $3 million in activity.
Last May, the Town of Johnsburg agreed to lease one to
three acres near Route 28 of the Ski Bowl Recreation Area to
the museum. The resolution authorizing the lease says the precise
location would be identified later.
“We’re looking for several million dollars to build and sustain
the system,” Bob Nessle said.
Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan said she was excited at
the prospects. “New York state is rich in ski history and Johnsburg
itself has been the site of some industry firsts. It would
certainly add to the experience of anyone visiting the area. I
would like to see the town support this initiative, and last year’s
agreement to lease property is a good start,” Hogan said.
Rafting On The Hudson: Family
Fun to High Adventure
Whitewater Rafting on the Hudson River is a 17 mile wilderness
adventure. We begin on the Indian River and continue through
the Hudson River Gorge. With great whitewater and spectacular
Adirondack scenery, it is the longest stretch of whitewater in New
York and is considered the “Grand Daddy” of N.Y. rivers.
The Hudson
River rafting season
begins in April
and runs into October.
Spring is “Big
Water” season. It
will provide you
with all the excitement
and heart
pumping adrenaline
you can handle.
As we move into late Spring and early Summer, water levels
and weather conditions mellow a bit. The river becomes a perfect
trip for anyone with an adventurous spirit. When rafting on the
Hudson began, this was the end of rafting for the year, but now,
when Summer arrives, dam releases on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday,
and Sunday, insure that the excitement continues. The warm
weather and guaranteed whitewater provides an ideal adventure
for the entire family.
In the Fall rafting continues through Columbus Day and the
gorge is turned into an aurora of scenic splendor not to be missed.
2018
The Ski Bowl Park in North Creek is a four season destination.
In the spring, summer and fall it is the starting point for 15 miles
of hiking trails and 20 Kilometers of single track mtn. bike trails.
In the winter the Park is operated by Gore Mtn. Ski Center which
runs two lifts, the Hudson Chair and the Village Lift, to service
great terrain and connect with the rest of Gore Mtn.’s alpine ski
center. In addition to alpine skiing Gore Mtn. Ski Center makes
snow and grooms
trails for Nordic Skiing
The Sanford Line
In 1942 the US government started an extension of the rail
line between North Creek and the Tahawus Mine to haul Titanium
for the World War II war effort. Before that time, Titanium was
shipped from India to the US but that supply was cut off due to
shipping restrictions caused by war.
The new rail line to Tahawus was dubbed the Sanford Line.
The 30-mile extension was estimated at $2.5 million but ended
up totaling $4.5 million because of extra building costs due to the
mountainous terrain and Hudson River crossing.
While the Sanford Line was being constructed, National Lead
Company built a new mill complex on Sanford Lake in 1941-42.
The mill produced titanium dioxide and iron oxide at the Tahawus
location.
In 1944 the first train ran to Tahawus/Sanford Lake. The first
diesel-electric locomotives on the Delaware &Hudson Railroad
were purchased for this branch.
Mine owner/operator National Lead Industries extracted and
shipped 40 million tons of titanium via the Sanford Line until the
mine closed in 1989.
Older Rail Riders on the trains that brought materials out of
the mine say it is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful stretches
of track in the country. And for many years no one could see it.
However, in 2017 Revolution Rail Co opened up this magnificent
line for you.
Revolution Rail Co.’s railbike tours!
Founders Robert Harte and Michael Dupee launched Revolution
Rail Co. in 2017, with a goal of sharing the railbiking experience
with everyone who loves the Adirondacks.
“We are excited to build on a terrific first year and share this
fun family activity with even more people in 2018,” said Harte.
“It’s such a fantastic way to get outside, get a little exercise,
and experience the Adirondacks in a way that you just can’t ottherwise,”
added Dupee.
This innovative new excursion business operates out of the
historic North Creek Railroad Station. Once railbikers check in at
the station, they take a short shuttle bus ride 5 miles north of town
to the tour launch point. After a safety briefing, tour leaders take
the railbikers further north on a 7 mile round trip adventure. The
tour takes riders through the beautiful Adirondack forest along the
banks of the Hudson River, and then over the Hudson on a spectacular
trestle bridge, where railbikers take a short break before
turning for home, returning to the launch point and boarding the
shuttle bus for the ride back to the station.
North Creek Farmers Market
Returns to Riverfront Park
After a brief hiatus, the North Creek Farmers Market returns
to Riverfront Park this year and is expanding its hours. The decision
to move the market back to its original location--Riverfront
Park-- was based on having better amenities there and newly
paved off-street parking. June 21 through the end of September
the market will be from held 2-6pm Thursday afternoons. Market
organizers say the market will be centered around the northern
pavilion next the yellow restored stables building. New signage
with a bright vegetable logo will direct to the new location.
Besides locally grown vegetables, market organizers say vendors
will have wine and vinegars, maple products, jams, crafts
and more. North Creek Farmers Market is a “Producers’ Market”
which requires
vendors to produce
what they
are selling. Live
music and kids’
activities will
encourage attendees
to linger
in the park and
enjoy the setting
which is steps
away from the
New owners at Garnet Hill Lodge, Jim and Frances Rucker,
are revitalizing this storied Adirondack resort. Jim Rucker says,
“My family and I are very familiar with Garnet Hill having owned
a house there for more than 15 years. We are very excited to open
the next chapter with this historic property and my family and I
are looking forward to being thoughtful stewards of the Lodge for
many years to come.”
The main Loghouse building at Garnet
Hill Lodge was built in 1937 by Frank
Hooper, a local garnet mine owner, for
Hooper’s son-in-law, as a guest house and
restaurant. The Loghouse is a log structure
built in the classic Adirondack Camp style.
It has kept that charm to this day and walking
into the Loghouse takes you back to
more tranquil times. The large fireplace in
the guest lounge made of local stone, sparkles
with nuggets of garnet and invites visitors
to sit back and relax. The new owners
have already started to upgrade the facilities
at the Lodge but according to Jim and Frances are keen to retain
the historic charm of this unique property.
Guests staying at Garnet Hill Lodge are able to enjoy the many
opportunities for outdoor activities that the Adirondack Mountains
offer. Jim Rucker, an outdoor enthusiast says that “one of
the things that makes Garnet Hill Lodge such a special place is
the opportunity for four season outdoor activities, right from the
front door.” Without leaving the Lodge campus visitors can hike,
swim, paddle, fish, ride mountain bikes, play tennis or just sit
back in an Adirondack chair to relax and
read a book. For those who wish to venture
further, the Siamese Ponds Wilderness
area is accessible from the Lodge
campus and offers endless opportunities
for more strenuous excursions.
Over the years, Garnet Hill has become
nationally known for the excellence
of its cross country skiing, both trails and
programs. It is widely acknowledged to
be one of the very best nordic ski centers
in the country. Winter opens up 50 km
of beautifully groomed cross-country ski
trails, countless miles of backcountry and snowshoe trails and it’s
only 15 minutes to downhill skiing at Gore Mountain.
The Loghouse is perfectly located on a gentle hill overlooking Whatever the season, Garnet Hill Lodge envelopes you in a
a beautiful pristine lake, with miles of private ski and hiking trails relaxed and free mountain lifestyle. It is a refuge from the pace
and surrounded by forever wild protected state land. The Loghouse
is the focal point of a special place that offers guests and enjoying life lived on simpler terms.
and pressure of everyday life where guests can relax and unwind,
visitors options for activity as well as rest and relaxation.
1126 Barton Mines Road
North River, NY 12856 | 518-251-2706
Only 35 minutes
from Lake George!
Garnet History
The Town of Johnsburg enjoyed a “garnet-rush”
starting back in 1878 when Henry Hudson Barton came to North
Creek in search of a better abrasive. Miners, prospectors and
geologists explored the mountains of Johnsburg and adjacent
Indian Lake. The target of their search was the rich deposits of
garnet commonly knows as the “Adirondack Ruby” the official
NYS gem stone. Like the diamond, garnet can serve dual roles.
If it is a clear, uncracked crystal, it can be faceted to produce a
beautiful gem stone, if imperfect, garnet can make an excellent
industrial abrasive. With the help of local people, Barton found
an outstanding source of garnet on Gore Mountain.
After Barton’s visit, garnet was no longer
a curiosity, but rather a valuable product to be
mined and used commercially as an abrasive.
The discovery provided a long term supply
of the hardest commercial quality garnet ever
found in the world. With good management, this
allowed Barton to be the only garnet mining company
to continue its existence as an important business
contributing to the economy of Johnsburg. During
the “hey-days” of garnet mining
there
were over 300 people
involved in the various garnet
mining activities. Besides Gore
Mountain many small “handpicking”
mines were found and mined
for short periods. The garnet from North Creek
area is almost as hard as a diamond and it fractures
into a multitude of sharp cutting edges. As an
abrasive, garnet has dominated the industrial market
for over 130 years.
Today it is possible to visit the world famous
historic garnet mine site and treasure hunt for your
own precious garnet gemstones. A talented staff
conducts the tour on the hour that begins with an
informative lecture on the history and the geology of
the Barton Mines and is followed up with instructions
on how to identify and find your own garnet treasures!
It is so much fun for all ages! For the shopper,
exploring the old fashion mineral shop that was
built in the early 1900’s is another treasure hunting
experience. The shop is filled with fabulous garnet
jewelry, garnet gifts for home decorating, science
and nature
toys, and
so much
more. This
is a great
minerva
Visitors looking for a classic Adirondack vacation spot need look no further
than the Town of Minerva. Located just minutes off the Northway in the
southern part of Essex County, NY Minerva has been a favorite year-round
destination and base camp for Adirondack tourist’s since the late 1800’s. In
fact, the word vacation was coined in the late 1800’s to mean people should
vacate the cities and move to the mountains for fresh air and relaxation - exactly
what Minerva offers tourists today.
Founded by Farming families after the Revolutionary War, Minerva’s
economic history includes iron mining, tanning, milling and logging. Today
the focus is on tourism, recreational boat building and forest products.
Minerva, which was incorporated in 1817, covers 162 square miles with
over 60% of its land in the “forever wild” ADK Park Preserve.
Visitors to Minerva will find that Minerva Lake, with its beautiful beach,
playgrounds, pavilions, campground, bathhouse and food stand serves as the
hub of town summer activities. The town-wide Minerva Day celebration culminates
with a vibrant fireworks display at Donnelly Beach, and will take
place on Saturday, June 30th. Check the Town website at www.townofminerva.com
for additional details. When the lake freezes over each winter,
visitors use the lake for ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and crosscountry
skiing.
The Hudson and Boreas Rivers flow through Minerva, providing recreational
fishing, whitewater rafting and canoeing opportunities. Many toprated
hiking trails start and end in Minerva including hikes for Moxham
Mountain, Stony Pond and Blue Ledges. ADK Park land acquisitions in
2013 added additional camping, hiking, biking, paddling, snowmobiling and
horseback riding access to lands in northern Minerva which have not been
open to the public for the past 100 years. Birders and other nature enthusiasts
should keep Minerva on their radar screens for interesting sightings & species.
Families with children enjoy Minerva
Central School’s reputation for
quality education and the Minerva
Youth Program’s summer day camp.
Notable Minerva residents have
included Solomon Northup (12 Years
a Slave) and internationally known
educator Ella Lynch, as well as part
time residents Ruth Bader Ginsburg
(who attended Camp Che-Na-Wah)
and Winslow Homer who stayed at the North Woods Club while painting
most of his ADK works.
The summer Concerts in the Park series will open its fourth season on
June 13th with an encore performance by Double Vision, followed by Fade
to Blues July 18th and crowd favorite Fingerdiddle for our final concert of
the season on August 15th. The Concerts take place from 6:30 - 8:30, and
desserts are offered by the parents of Minerva Central School students at
each concert.
If you’re looking for an authentic Adirondack experience or a base camp
for further adventures, look no further than Minerva. Conveniently located
just minutes from Northway Exit 26, Minerva offers year round amenities
and adventures including Minerva Lake, Donnelly Beach, the Minerva
Campgrounds, boating, fishing, hiking, ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing,
cross country skiing, biking, birding, hunting and so much more!
We offer scenic views, comfortable isolated sites, tennis, basketball, bocce
and pickleball courts, horseshoe pits, concession stand, restroom and bathhouse
facilities, and best of all, Donnelly Beach.
Stay at the Minerva Campgrounds Spring to Fall (518-251-2869), find
a room at one of our local Cottages or B&Bs, or start looking for your next
home. Come for a day, a week or come to stay. You’ll find the essence of the
Adirondacks in Minerva, NY. Minerva is located within a 90 minute drive
of Albany, 2 hours of Burlington, VT, and 40 minutes north of Glens Falls.
Minerva’s Blue Ledges Trail
The 2.5 mile trail to the Blue Ledges ends up at a beautiful
spot in the Hudson River Gorge opposite tall granite cliffs known
as the Blue Ledges. These spectacular cliffs rise over 300 feet
and are framed by Hemlock trees growing out of the blueish rock
formation. The Hudson makes a right angle bend at this location
and is filled with big boulders. Depending on water levels, the
boulders may be well above water or submerged and creating a
huge whitewater display. When the Hudson water level is lower
there is also a section of sandy bank shore for those who like to
wade but be careful—the current is swift in this area not matter
what the water level.
You can find the Blue Ledges trailhead along the North Woods
Club Road (left turn/west off of NY 28N about 1.7 miles north of
the Minerva Post Office) just before you reach Huntley Pond. The
road is paved part way then becomes a well-maintained gravel
road. It dips down to cross the Boreas River which is an interesting
place to stop and have lunch or explore on your way to the
Blue Ledges trailhead. Blue Ledges trailhead parking is located
about 7 miles down North Woods Club Road.
The start of the Blue Ledges trail passes around the east end of
Huntley Pond on a well-used trail marked with blue DEC markers.
Initially the trail offers some tough footing with lots of exposed
roots. After you reach the pond, the trail gets smoother as
you climb into a classic ADK forest with a pleasant rolling trail.
About a mile before you reach the Hudson, you will start hearing
the sound of the water rushing thru the Hudson River Gorge.
Stony Pond
The Stony Pond Trail is a four mile round trip ADK hike featuring
an easy to moderate walk through a fairly level section of
Vanderwacker Wild Forest, past beaver dams and beautiful rock
formations. The pond is framed by classic ADK scenery and is
accessible in all four seasons. There is a lean-to with fire pit and
picnic table just off the pond, making the perfect place for lunch
or a break. Make sure to read the walls of the lean to where hikers
and campers have signed their names and hometown.
Fir, spruce, hemlock, birch, maple, beech, hobble-bush and
wetland plants along the Stony Pond trail make it a good choice
for birding and nature watching. When you reach the pond, you
may see loons nesting there in summer and year round you may
catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead.
Though the pond looks inviting for swimming and is easy to
access via large flat rocks, watch out for leeches which are numerous.
A couple canoes and a row boat have been left at the pond,
but you must bring in your own paddle or oars. Be careful when
lifting up the boats since snakes tend to use them for shelter.
In the winter, the Stony Pond Trail is a snowmobile route—
that’s why the bridges along this trail are so beefy! Snowmobiles
create a path for cross-country skiers and snowshoers that frequent
the trail in winter.
In the spring or during rainy weather, the Stony Pond Trail
tends to be muddy where small streams cross the trail.
In the future, the Stony Pond Trail will be used as a “connector”
for the future North Country Trail—a 5,200 mile trail which
will run from VT to North Dakota. The NCT plans to use the
northern branch of the Stony Pond Trail toward Hewitt Pond then
into the Hoffman Notch Wilderness.
Stony Pond is located in Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest
and the trailhead is located on NY 28N, north of Minerva.
There is a DEC sign and parking for five or six cars along the side
of the road. The GPS coordinates are N43 49.967 W74 00.971.
Across the road from the Stony Pond trailhead is a trail marker
for Rankin Pond Trail which is a quick half mile hike to a small
pond with floating bogs and interesting wetlands. Many paddlers
with lightweight canoes access Rankin Pond to fish and enjoy the
unique wetland plants the pond supports.
