you will find that <strong>the</strong> punishment for breaking it as<br />

a national law was stoning. And how was <strong>the</strong><br />

gospel preached in this? God was teaching <strong>the</strong><br />

people, in this form of punishment, that <strong>the</strong> law out<br />

of Christ would stone <strong>the</strong>m to death. Just as <strong>the</strong>se<br />

literal stones killed <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> law in dead stone<br />

would put <strong>the</strong>m to death. He was even in this way<br />

teaching <strong>the</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> Living Stone, <strong>the</strong> Stone of<br />

Israel, <strong>the</strong> law in life, and that is <strong>the</strong> gospel.<br />

“And when <strong>the</strong> tempter came to Him, he said,<br />

If thou be <strong>the</strong> Son of God,--<br />

Command That These Stones Be Made<br />

Bread.<br />

(Matt. 4:3) It seems as if God has put lessons<br />

for us even in <strong>the</strong> devil’s mouth. Some preach<br />

Christ through envy, but never<strong>the</strong>less Christ is<br />

preached. “If Thou be <strong>the</strong> Son of God, command<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se stones be made bread.” Christ’s work on<br />

this earth was to change stones to bread, that <strong>the</strong><br />

law which on <strong>the</strong> tables of stone condemns and<br />

kills should be changed in Him, <strong>the</strong> Living Stone,<br />
