straightly command you that ye should not teach in<br />

this name? And behold, ye have filled Jerusalem<br />

with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s<br />

blood upon us. Then Peter and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r apostles<br />

answered, and said, We ought to obey God ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than man.” Yet it was contrary to law.<br />

Paul, who had himself been a persecutor, after<br />

he had been converted took Barnabas, and went out<br />

preaching, contrary to law. They passed through<br />

Asia Minor preaching <strong>the</strong> word, and on coming to<br />

Phillippi, healed a woman possessed of an evil<br />

spirit. “But when her master saw that <strong>the</strong> hope of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir gains was gone, <strong>the</strong>y caught Paul and Silas,<br />

and drew <strong>the</strong>m into <strong>the</strong> market place unto <strong>the</strong><br />

rulers. And brought <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> Magistrates,<br />

saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly<br />

trouble our city.” They did not trouble <strong>the</strong> city at<br />

all. They simply took away from <strong>the</strong> man his hope<br />

of gain. They shut <strong>the</strong>m in prison, but <strong>the</strong> prison<br />

doors were thrown open,--God’s way of teaching<br />

<strong>the</strong>m a lesson.<br />
