den of lions. And when he came to <strong>the</strong> den he cried<br />

with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and <strong>the</strong> king<br />

spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of <strong>the</strong><br />

living God, is thy God whom thou servest<br />

continually able to deliver <strong>the</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> lions?<br />

Then said Daniel unto <strong>the</strong> king, O king, live<br />

forever. My God hath sent His angel and hath shut<br />

<strong>the</strong> lions’ mouths, that <strong>the</strong>y have not hurt me;<br />

forasmuch as before Him innocency was found in<br />

me; and also before <strong>the</strong>e, O king, have I done no<br />

hurt.” What! had he not broken <strong>the</strong> law?--Yes; but<br />

<strong>the</strong> king was out of his place in making it, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore it was no offence to go contrary to it. And<br />

God showed this to be so.<br />

What is <strong>the</strong> lesson?--God is saying, Caesar,<br />

“Keep out of My realm; keep on your own side of<br />

<strong>the</strong> fence. The minute you come over here I give<br />

My subjects perfect right to disobey you. I will<br />

stand by <strong>the</strong>m in it.” And He did.<br />

Thus <strong>the</strong> contest between civil encroachments<br />

on <strong>the</strong> domains of God and fidelity to God went on<br />

till Jesus Christ came. Then <strong>the</strong> Roman Empire<br />
