for thirty days, save of <strong>the</strong>e, O king, he shall be<br />

cast into <strong>the</strong> den of lions. Now, O king, establish<br />

<strong>the</strong> decree, and sign <strong>the</strong> writing, that it be not<br />

changed, according to <strong>the</strong> law of <strong>the</strong> Medes and<br />

Persians, which altereth not. Wherefore king<br />

Darius signed <strong>the</strong> writing and <strong>the</strong> decree.<br />

“Now when Daniel knew that <strong>the</strong> writing was<br />

signed he went into his house; and his windows<br />

being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he<br />

kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and<br />

prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did<br />

aforetime.” He had been accustomed to pray three<br />

times a day, and when king Darius forbade him to<br />

pray to God, he paid no attention whatever. He did<br />

not close his window and sit in his chair, so that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would not know whe<strong>the</strong>r he was praying or<br />

not. He got down on his knees and prayed as he<br />

had aforetime.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong>se men had had just what <strong>the</strong>y wanted.<br />

They had heard Daniel pray. No doubt <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

heard him pray before that, but <strong>the</strong>y were interested<br />

in this prayer. Then <strong>the</strong>se men came unto <strong>the</strong> king<br />
