does not allow it to be true in him. He is a lie; his<br />

whole life is a lie; he is a falsehood from <strong>the</strong> first to<br />

<strong>the</strong> last; and so is everyone whose character is like<br />

his, and whose faith goes no fur<strong>the</strong>r than his. Our<br />

very characters are a lie if <strong>the</strong>y are not in harmony<br />

with <strong>the</strong> word of God.<br />

Before a person is converted, he has <strong>the</strong> choice<br />

of saying, “I am true; I am righteous,” and thus<br />

making God a liar, or of saying, “God only is true,”<br />

thus making himself a liar. The Scripture says, “Let<br />

God be true; but every man a liar.” Rom. 3:4.<br />

Every unconverted person must make his choice<br />

between calling God a liar, or admitting that he is<br />

one. Sin is being false, and that is what makes <strong>the</strong><br />

devil wholly false, because he is a sinner from <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning; he is a liar, and <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of lies. God<br />

says, “All have sinned and come short of <strong>the</strong> glory<br />

of God.” We must let Him be true and say, “I have<br />

sinned.” But when we come to that experience in<br />

that way, <strong>the</strong>re is something more to be said. When<br />

Nathan came to David to reprove him for his sin<br />

and said to him, “Thou art <strong>the</strong> man,” David<br />

answered, “I have sinned against <strong>the</strong> Lord. And<br />
