COMMUNICATIONS APP
A HUGE SUCCESS AT
GUERNSEY COLLEGE OF
FURTHER EDUCATION
An internal communications
application – GCFE Connect –
introduced by Guernsey College of
Further Education last September,
is proving to be extremely popular
with both students and college staff.
Since its introduction, the app now
has approximately 650 users and has
logged over 19,000 direct messages.
Essentially, GCFE Connect operates
just like other social networks but
with added safeguarding features
that keep staff’s professional and
personal lives separate and enables
students to communicate with
each other and with staff in a highly
secure space.
Jeff Stuart, the college’s Head of
Learner Support Services, said: 'The
platform is being used in a variety
of ways. Learner groups are sharing
discussions on vocational projects,
staff are setting reminders and
guiding learners towards e-learning
activities, cross-college initiatives
can be communicated and students
are sending questions to individuals
or groups on study issues which
develops peer support networks.
'It has also helped our Progress
Coach team to support learners who
may self-refer, choose to contact the

team via the application or have been
identified as benefitting from the
knowledge that they have an open
channel of communication direct to
a source of support. Students have
told us that they are much more
comfortable using this platform
rather than Facebook or similar
because of its privacy and security.
'Communication is often cited as
a challenge for any organisation
but this is even more of an issue
when you are situated on three
separate locations as we are at the
college. We have had lots of positive
feedback from everyone using GCFE
Connect and as the application is
constantly evolving I am sure that
its usage will continue to grow as it
becomes even further embedded
within the college’s culture.'
IOT SECURITY INNOVATION DELIVERED BY JT AND
CELLUSYS IOT SHOWCASED AT GSMA CONFERENCE
JT and Cellusys IOT will further
strengthened their new partnership
at the major global conference on
mobile privacy and security in May.
The Channel Island-based telecoms
operator, which has developed an
IoT and M2M SIM card that provides
total and seamless connectivity
whatever network is used, formed an
alliance with Dublin-based Cellusys
IOT in February to enable enterprise
customers of JT to view and manage
their cellular connectivity security
via an IoT security dashboard.
Both partners showcased the new
enhanced security dashboard
solution at the GSMA Mobile 360
Privacy and Security conference in
The Hague on 30-31 May.
Paul Bullock, JT’s Head of IoT, said:
'With the growing number of IoT
devices worldwide, the security risks
for enterprises and consumers is
increasing, including information
being stolen, devices being made
dormant, the theft of personal identity
and even remote car hacking. These
are often initiated by hackers via
network-based signalling attacks, airinterface
hacking, and DDoS attacks,
which continue to grow in size and
frequency. These attacks are often
not visible for enterprise customers,
since they happen in the controlled
environment of the telecom provider
and not in a customer’s IP network.
'Through our partnership with
Cellusys IoT, we are offering
enhanced security solutions via
a security dashboard that enable
customers to manage their own
safety. Alarms can be triggered
in case of attacks and enhanced
security filters can be applied,
specific to each use-case. For
the first time, signalling security
is made available for enterprise
customers who need full visibility
and management capability over the
security of their IoT devices.'

INTERNATIONAL
STANDARD

Information Security Management
Certification for all its operational
activities in Jersey and Guernsey.
ISO 27001 is the international
standard which is recognised
globally for managing risks to
the security of information. The
standard is now rated as the
preferred choice for creating and
managing a robust, dynamic and
adaptable Information Security
Management System (ISMS).
The certification to ISO27001 allows
Logicalis to provide assurances to
clients and other stakeholders that
they are comprehensively managing
the security of the information they
hold. The standard covers the whole
of the organisation, not just IT, and
encompasses people, processes
and technology. This has enabled
Logicalis to readily understand risks
and embrace security controls
as part of the everyday working
practices that they perform.
