Beside the Brandenburg Gate lies the Jewish
Holocaust Memorial, unveiled in 2006 after 23 years
of planning, debate and building work. Visiting it is
a haunting experience, especially if you take in the
underground information centre which relates the
harrowing stories of Holocaust victims. In the eastern
part of the city you’ll find the Fernsehturm; whether
you love or loathe its concrete curves, the Fernsehturm
offers panoramic views from its observation deck and
restaurant. Do consider buying a Berlin Welcome Card
for savings on public transport and attractions.
Brandenburg provides a lovely contrast with Berlin.
Potsdam pre-dates the capital by a couple of hundred
years and is home to Sanssouci, Frederick the Great’s
landscaped park of architectural treasures. Other
attractions include the former concentration camp
Sachsenhausen; the pretty town of Rheinsberg, with
its palace, lakes, forests and earthy pottery; a ruined
monastery at Chorin; an impressive ship hoist at
Niederfinow; and the Unteres Odertal National park,
an ecologically important wetland environment on
the Polish border. Brandenburg’s most popular area
is the Spreewald, centred on Lübbenau. Its web of
gentle waterways is great for punting and canoeing,
and the region is home to the Sorbs, Germany’s largest
indigenous non-German community.
Once you’ve discovered one of Germany’s regions,
there are another 15 remaining for you to explore!
