THE CHANCE to create history in a
Moascar Cup challenge, and the potential
continuation of this year’s fairy-tale
story, headline the ninth round of the UC
Championship.
On Monday Shirley Boys’ High have
a chance to secure the Moascar Cup for
the first time in school history with a rare
challenge against Nelson College.
The challengers have won five of their
last six UC Championship games with
their only loss being to Christchurch
Boys’ High 17-19.
While SBHS may not be having one
of the vintage seasons that saw them
make back-to-back finals in 2015 and
2016, they will face an anything but
vintage Nelson College which have
struggled with losses to Marlborough
Boys’ College, Rangiora High and St
Bede’s College. Nelson College will
come into the clash on the back of a
busy schedule at the annual quadrangular
tournament where they went
down to Wanganui Collegiate 13-19 on
Monday before thrashing Wellington
College 40-0 yesterday.
The tournament was won by Christ’s
College after they defeated Wanganui
33-7 in the final yesterday. Meanwhile,
Lincoln Combined are back on home
turf when they look to continue their
great run of form which has them
Armstrong gets maiden
formula three victory
MARCUS ARMSTRONG continues
to raise his profile as one of the world’s
most talented up-and-coming open wheel
drivers.
Armstrong, 17, recorded three podium
finishes, including a maiden victory at the
weekend, to shoot to the top of the formula
three European championship.
The third stop of the championship
took drivers to the Norisring street circuit
in Nuremberg, Germany. Armstrong won
the opening race of the weekend from
pole to record his first win in the championship.
He backed that up with a second place
finish in race two which gave him the
overall points lead in the championship.
In race three, Armstrong led for the early
part of the race but struggled for grip
sitting third in the championship. On Saturday
they face slow-starters St Andrew’s
College. STAC have taken it up a gear
in the last month to win four straight. If
they are to make a late play-off run, a win
is a must here with their final four games
coming against CBHS, SBHS, Christ’s
and St Bede’s.
Round nine: TBHS v Mid-Canterbury
Combined, St Bede’s v Aoraki
Combined, Christ’s v Waimea Combined,
CBHS v Marlborough Boys,
in the later stages which saw him fall to
third position. “My goal for this weekend
was to score as many points as possible.
However, I didn’t expect to be on the
podium here three times and to be taking
the lead in the drivers’ standings,” said
Armstrong.
After nine races of the 30-race championship,
Armstrong is on 101 points – one
point ahead of British racer Dan Ticktum.
The championship is a proven path to
formula one – 2016 winner Lance Stoll
now drives for Williams-Mercedes in
formula one, while 2016 champion Lando
Norris currently lead the formula two
championship.
The next three races in the championship
are in Zandvoort Netherland from
July 14-15.
