SANAS CEO Mr. Ron Josias also
acknowledged all facilities who took
part in the AFRAC peer evaluation
during August 2017.
He also shared update on SANAS
move to the new building, and he
communicated with the meeting the
below AFRAC developments regarding
international recognition.
Mr. Josias shared information about
AFRAC E-learning to the stakeholders
that attended the meetings. He hinted
that this self-study programme allows
learners to acquire knowledge and
complete each course at their own
pace and from anywhere in the world.
The programme provides ample
information, reading material as
well as video interviews and where
required, subject experts are available
to assist learners with additional
information and guidance. Upon
successful completion of each course,
learners receive a training certificate
which may be essential as a prerequisite
for other courses and further
AFRAC training.
The target audience for the
promotion of the AFRAC E-Learning
Programme is a growing population
of organisations and institutes with
the intent to develop Accreditation
Cooperation. To watch the E-learning
video you can visit AFRAC website:
B-BBee PRoGRAMMe ADvAnCeS
By Mokgadi Rameetse
The SANAS accreditation programmes are
required to continue ensuring that the
key strategic matters are implemented
and maintained. As such, the B-BBEE
programme conducted an assessor
training and revived its Specialist Technical
Committee (STC).
Assessor Training
One of the SANAS key strategic
objectives is to increase the current
assessor pool in order to provide a
quality service to all its clients. On
the 26 th – 28 th June 2017 the B-BBEE
programme conducted training of
fifteen (15) new technical assessors
in line with the requirements of the
SANAS R47 document.
The R47 document aims to clarify
the role of the B-BBEE verification
agencies and to specify the
accreditation criteria.
STC COMMITTEE
STC is a fundamental and vital
component of operating a technically
relevant accreditation system.
Amongst other things, it is a tool that
guides technical policy and provides
important mediation support in
technical matters to the assessment
process within a specified area of
accreditation. If this important focus
is somehow lost or blurred then
problems are bound to arise with
potentially damaging consequences
to the credibility of the accreditation
process.
On the 07 th July 2017, SANAS B-BBE
Program revived its STCs which will
continue to provide appropriate
technical guidance in all matters
relating to B-BBEE expertise.
During the STC meeting, the following
matters were discussed:
● Mr Mpho Phaloane, SANAS
Executive, presented on the
purpose of establishing the STCs
and outlined the policy on STC
membership;
● Mr Yuneal Padayachy the Deputy
Director: B-BBEE Procurement
Transformation and Verification,
discussed the role of the dti in the
B-BBEE space;
● The Chairperson of the Association
of B-BBEE Professionals (ABP), Mr
David Ndou presented on the role
of ABP; and
● Chief Executive Officer of Property
Sector Charter Council, Mrs Portia
Tau-Sekati presented on the role of
the sector councils.
Details on the responsibilities of
the STC and the meeting frequency
was documented in the terms of
references that will be distributed to
members.
I believe that our country’s
transformation through B-BBEE as
an instrument, was and continues to
be a good intervention. Therefore, we
need to help each other to achieve its
objectives and remove obstacles to
transformation, including addressing
the lack of financial support and
market access for black businesses.
Annual Workshops
B-BBEE programme hosted its
annual workshops at three regions.
These were hosted in Cape Town on
the 05 th September; Durban on the
07 th September and in Gauteng on
the 11 th September. Three sector
codes custodians were invited to
attend and shared information on the
sector codes, the dti and the B-BBEE
commission office also attended these
meetings.
During these meetings following
agenda items were discussed:
● Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) Charter;
● Property Sector Charter effective
date;
● Forestry Sector Code effective date;
● Department of Trade and industry
(the dti);
● The B-BBEE commission processes;
and
● SANAS processes for submission
of corrective action.
It is important that as we drive
transformation at different levels,
be reminded of the B-BBEE Policy
objectives.
AFRAC Re-evaluation of SANAS
By Yolanda Vinnicombe
SANAS underwent its first re-evaluation by the African
Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC) from 31 July to 4 August 2014.
The evaluation was conducted by a team of six AFRAC
General requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting
conformity assessment bodies”, the International
Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), International
Accreditation Forum (IAF) and AFRAC requirements, as
The team raised five non-conformances, ten concerns and
six comments. SANAS is expected to address these before
a decision on continuing membership to the AFRAC MRA
can be made.
SANAS would like to take this opportunity thank the
following assessors who formed part of all the teams who
conducted assessments and that were witnessed by AFRAC.
