An exuberant Ryde MP Victor Dominello with Premier Gladys Berejiklian 

at Meadowbank yesterday to announce the new Meadowbank Education 

Precinct. TWT EXCLUSIVE on-the-spot PHOTO. 

Meadowbank TAFE will be transformed into the State’s first technology focused TAFE 

college together with a new K-12 school. 

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Ryde MP Victor 

Dominello yesterday unveiled plans for the new 

education facilities which will include a new 

primary school, high school and a revitalised 

Meadowbank TAFE. 

“We are investing in a world class education 

precinct in Meadowbank to cater for the needs 

of students at a range of stages in their lives” 

the premier said. 

“The surrounding area is renowned as a 

leading technology hub and it makes sense to 

put technology front and centre of the revitalised 

TAFE site”, she said.

LONG time North Ryde residents Tony and 

Yvonne Rorhan will celebrate their Golden Wedding 

anniversary next Tuesday with close family and 

friends. 

The couple were married on July 3, 1968 in St 

George’s Serbian Orthodox Church at Cabramatta 

and bought their first home in North Ryde not 

long after. It is here they have stayed for the past 

50 years and have successfully raised their family 

- son Stephen and daughter Kristina. Tony had a 

successful career in the banking industry and now 

enjoys retirement doing what he does best - as a 

handyman in the community. He is extremely gifted 

in his craft of building and carpentry. Yvonne also 

worked in the bank as an Investment Manager but 

now enjoys her time with friends and family and 

cooking up traditional Balkan food. Both Tony and 

Yvonne have fond memories of family holidays at 

Brunswick Heads and their greatest joys in life are 

their two grandchildren Georgia and Anthony. They 

love spending precious time with them and being 

a prominent, positive influence in their lives. Tony 

and Yvonne are always there to lend a hand and will 

go above and beyond wherever and whenever it is 

needed. Daughter Kristina and son Stephen said 

“we are so proud of the life you have made together 

and the home of love, happiness and wonderful 

memories you have shared and created for us all.”

EDUCATION REVOLUTION 

at Ryde TAFE site 

Ryde MP and Minister for Finance and 

Property Victor Dominello has announced 

as part of the proposed new Meadowbank 

Education Precinct Marsden High School 

will be relocated to the new precinct and 

cater for up to 1500 secondary school students 

on the site of the old Meadowbank 

Boys High School site. 

This will be double the current capacity at Marsden 

High’s West Ryde site. 

Meadowbank Public School will also have its capacity 

doubled to 1000 places following its relocation 

to the new precinct. 

Victor Dominello said “what we are unveiling is a 

NSW first and this new education precinct will cater 

for the community’s growing number of families”.

Elizabeth Mullens 

Elizabeth Mullens was born on 

16th May, 1925 at Lisdale (near 

Wallerawang) and has a sister Irene. 

Elizabeth’s mother Helen was born 

in Scotland and she immigrated to 

Australia early last century where she 

found work as a secretary in Sydney. 

Elizabeth’s father was Australian and 

worked in the coal mines and had a 

passion for race horses. Elizabeth 

remembers that he had stables and a 

very big vegetable garden. 

Elizabeth met her husband in 

Lisdale. Lloyd was riding a draught 

horse past her house which was 

galloping down the road at full speed 

to go home. Elizabeth thought he was 

showing off but Lloyd later admitted 

that in reality he was just holding on 

for dear life. 

Living in a country town there were 

social activities including dances and 

tennis games where Elizabeth met up 

with Lloyd again but at a much more 

leisurely pace. They were married 

on August 2nd 1947 and at first lived 

in a tent while Lloyd worked in the 

mines.

Their eldest daughter Sandra was 

born in 1949 and their youngest 

daughter Janette was born in 1953. 

Elizabeth and Lloyd continued to 

live in Wallerawang until about 1957 

when they moved to North Ryde. 

It was here that Lloyd, who was a 

bricklayer by trade, built the house 

that remains the family home to this 

day. 

Eldest daughter Sandra met her 

Husband Terry and married in 1971. 

Sandra and Terry have 2 beautiful 

daughters being Leonie and Kim. 

Kim is married to David and they 

have 2 children being Chloe aged 7 

and Braithan aged 5. 

Youngest daughter Janette married 

Norman in 1974 and they have two 

children being David and Eryn. 

In all Elizabeth and Lloyd with 

their two daughters, 4 grandchildren 

and 2 great grandchildren have been 

happily married for 71 years this 

August.

The Meadowbank Education Precinct will be open 

for students towards the end of 2021. 

The proposed new high school and primary school 

are among more than 170 projects being funded 

by the NSW Government over four years under a 

record breaking $6 billion school building program. 

Victor Dominello claimed this is the biggest

Dear Sir, 

Thank the “Great Red 

Kangaroo” for people like 

Tony Ikonomou who speak 

up for Australian values and 

decency. 

The mass immigration, 

over-population, over-medication 

and over-concentration 

of media in the country 

is an abomination against 

everyone who fought for and 

built this country. 

This collision between 

Government and Business 

must be stopped if we are 

to retain the very ideals and 

way of life which makes us 

unique and who we are. 

Aussies grow up in houses 

with backyards. Not in B- 

Grade “Dog Kennels” built 

along already clogged tributary 

roads by private and 

foreign developers, knocking 

down beautiful well built 

homes (described by real 

estate agents as ‘Knock- 

Downs’) and local landmarks 

and parkland. 

This concerted push to 

fascism by both Labour and 

Liberal Party traitors (party 

being the operative word 

and many whose families 

ironically and tragically came 

to Australia to escape fascist 

Europe, eg, Gladys) can only 

result in a total denigration of 

our country, our suburbs and 

our rights. 

The banning of press at 

public meetings, the sale of 

Letters to the Editor 

utilities and assets and the 

push for an orwellian ‘cashless’ 

society are all indicators 

and signs of impending 

loss of freedom of speech 

and disaster.

A real debate on 

climate change 

Dear Sir, 

Slowly the Western world 

is facing up to the real possibility 

that the catastrophe 

that was supposed to lie 

in wait for us, as a result of 

our use of fossil fuels, might 

have been over-egged, and 

that climate change may 

not even be accessible to 

human action, let alone 

caused by it. 

Germany is having trouble 

with its push to make alternative 

sources the core of its 

electricity production. 

China has stopped subsidising 

solar panels. 

A newly elected provincial 

government in Ontario is set 

to wipe out carbon-pricing 

rules. 

The UK has seen two 

weeks of nil power from its 

offshore wind turbines. And 

in the USA there has been a 

public debate between two 

proponents for each side: 

Michael Mann of the hockey 

stick and David Titley, a meteorologist 

formerly of the US 

Navy, for the warmists, and 

Judith Curry, well known to 

sceptics, and Patrick Moore, 

former President of Greenpeace 

Canada, for the pragmatists, 

realists, sceptics, 

call them what you want, 

though not, please, ‘deniers’. 

Patrick Moore was one of 

the founders of Greenpeace, 

but has since declared that 

the organisation has been 

taken over by scaremongers 

and disinformers. 

The debate, at local university, 

was organised by a legal 

firm in Charleston, Virginia, 

and you had to pay something 

to attend.

This residential site on the 

Parramatta River is clearly 

causing harm to the health 

of residents and generally 

to the surrounding environment 

and has for many 

years.

one last week the urgent 

need to ‘Clean it up NOW!’ 

You have wide community 

support for this demand, 

not only from the Mayor of 

Hunters Hill Mark Bennett, 

but also from the Deputy 

Mayor Ross Williams, former 

Mayor Richard Quinn, 

Councillors, Philippa Clark 

and the Nelson Parade Action 

Group and many members 

of the community both 

local and wider. 

Expert reports say that it 

should be taken off site to 

an appropriate facility, and 

local Lane Cove member 

Anthony Roberts who is 

also Minister for Planning 

can simply sign the application 

before him from 

Property NSW to make this 

happen. 

The member for Ryde Victor 

Dominello, who is the 

Minister for Property NSW, 

stated to residents recently 

that the Government had 

$30 million to clean up the 

site. Well Minister, it wasn’t 

in the NSW Budget for the 

next year. 

The community is sick 

of the spin and the delays 

from both Ministers.

Hunters Hill 

Consideration for 

remediation work 

Dear Sir, 

TWT’s support for our 

campaign to encourage 

the NSW Government to 

remediate the former industrial 

land at Nelson 

Parade was important in 

securing a $30m commitment 

from Government to 

fix this problem. 

We appreciate the engagement 

of Property NSW 

and our local member, Anthony 

Roberts MP, over recent 

months. 

Property NSW has developed 

a number of remediation 

proposals which warrant 

serious consideration 

and evaluation. 

Residents are understandably 

concerned with 

these proposals because a 

significant part of the contaminated 

waste would be 

encapsulated onsite. 

However, onsite encapsulation 

is quite commonly 

used for the remediation of 

former industrial land like 

the site in Nelson Parade. 

It is certainly preferable to 

the current position. 

After 40 years in inaction 

and broken promise by 

successive Governments, 

it is also understandable 

that residents are sceptical 

about this Government’s 

commitment to follow 

through. 

Testing the proposals 

from a scientific and technical 

perspective and securing 

the commitment of 

Government is best done 

by a calm consideration of 

the facts in a balanced, reasoned 

and careful manner. 

We need to avoid further 

needless politicisation of 

the issues. 

I emphasised these 

points when I spoke as 

Chair of Hunters Hill Environment 

Action Group at 

the recent Council meeting 

reported on in your edition 

of June 20. 

We were pleased with the 

resolution of Hunters Hill 

Council to support residents 

test the current proposals 

on their merits. 

We look forward to TWT’s

HAVING a strong 

passion for fashion, 

I’m currently studying 

a Diploma of Business 

at The Fashion 

Institute at Chippendale. 

I have been here 

since the start of the 

year and have thoroughly 

enjoyed my 

time so far. 

I decided to take this 

path as from a young 

age I’ve always adored 

fashion and my passion 

for it grew more 

and more across my 

high school years. 

Initially I was going to 

study textiles at university,

of any other paths into

found The Fashion Institute’s 

course and 

completely fell in love

Last chance to save 

this Epping cottage 

THE fate of a heritage cottage in Epping is expected to be decided after a public meeting on 

Wednesday July 4 at the Mantra Hotel in Parramatta at 6.00pm. 

This will be the third public 

meeting after an independent 

planning panel deferred its decision 

on a development application 

which proposed to demolish 

the heritage cottage at 48 

Oxford Street, Epping and build 

a high-rise apartment block on 

the site with an estimated 200 

units. 

Epping MP Damien Tudehope 

said he remains strongly opposed 

to the development and 

has called on Parramatta City 

Council to intervene. 

“The only way to remove a heritage 

protected item from an LEP 

is by way of Planning Proposal, 

and it’s the role of councils, not 

planning panels to make that 

decision,” Mr Tudehope said. 

The planning panel is seeking 

legal advice on the appli cation 

which will give applicant time to 

consider if it is feasible to retain 

the heritage site as part of a development. 

Mr Tudehope said he has four 

recommendations to be put to 

the public meeting. 

“Do not approve development 

applications until the City of Parramatta 

has released its Epping 

Town Centre traffic study,” he 

said. 

“Do not approve development 

applications until there is a government 

commitment to widen 

Epping Bridge. 

“We must also ensure the heritage 

status should only be determined 

by councils and when 

considering traffic impacts of 

developments, they should be 

looking at the cumulative impact 

of development in the area rather 

than just the impact of the site 

being considered.”

funding for our local 

ferry wharf projects 

Drummoyne MP John Sidoti has been lobbying for ferry wharves across his electorate.

MORE than eight million dollars will be spent on ferry wharves 

in the City of Canada Bay, Drummoyne MP John Sidoti announced 

this week. 

It includes $3 million 

for an upgrade at 

Cabarita Ferry Wharf 

and nearly $6 million 

for the construction 

of a new ferry wharf 

at Rhodes. 

Mr Sidoti has been 

lobbying for the ferry 

wharf funding as part 

of his ongoing campaign 

to upgrade all 

ferry wharves in his 

electorate. 

The upgrade money 

was announced 

in the recent state 

budget alongside 

further funding of 

$341 million for the 

Concord Hospital 

upgrade. 

A grant of $12.9 

million for a new 

school at Russell Lea 

Public School was 

also confirmed in the 

budget alongside an 

announcement of a 

new public school 

at Rhodes East and 

a new high school at 

Sydney Olympic Park 

Six million dollars 

was also allocated 

to upgrade the intersection 

at Concord

Charter Hall shopping centres partner with 

Two Good to provide 20,000 meals to women in need 

LEADING property group Charter Hall has partnered with social 

enterprise Two Good to provide 20,000 meals to domestic violence 

survivors throughout Australia. 

From June 27 to July 

14, Charter Hall, in partnership 

with the communities 

in which they 

operate, is “Delivering 

Good” across 26 of 

its shopping centres 

and raising awareness 

about family and 

domestic violence. 

As part of this campaign, 

Charter Hall will 

provide meals to women 

and children in refuges 

nationwide. 

Giant jigsaw puzzle 

frames will be set up 

in participating centres 

including West Ryde 

Marketplace with shoppers 

encouraged to 

play their part by adding 

their piece to the 

puzzle. 

The puzzle-building 

process symbolises 

domestic violence survivors 

rebuilding their 

lives and the role the 

community can play. 

With every piece put 

into its place, a Two 

Good meal will be donated 

to a nearby shelter, 

up to 800 meals.

Pro-active Toby Hopkins is Ryde’s Police Officer of Year 

LEADING Senior Constable Toby Hopkins has 

been recognised as the Ryde Police Area Command 

Officer Of The Year. 

His award was announced 

at Ryde Rotary’s 

recent meeting at 

the Ryde Aquatic Centre 

which saw Rotarians also 

commend Senior Constable 

Terence Wilson 

and Robyn Cuddy. 

Leading Senior Constable 

Hopkins commenced 

duty at Eastwood Local 

Area Command in 

May, 2008 as a probationary 

constable and is 

described as an experienced 

and dedicated 

general duties police officer 

with a background 

in proactive and plain 

clothes duties. 

His commendation 

notes that his daily duties 

require him to be a first 

responder to local operational 

issues as they arise 

within the Command, 

including calls for help 

from the public and other 

agencies, proactively reducing 

crime by targeting 

crime hotspots based on 

local intelligence and fulfilling 

the numerous other 

tasks required of a general 

duties police officer. 

The commendation 

further describes him as 

going above and beyond 

what is required of his 

duties and notes his pivotal 

role in training, mentoring 

and development. 

Senior Constable Wilson’s 

commendation 

notes that he is a proactive 

officer who has taken 

on a number of complex 

investigations. 

“These investigations 

have led to successful 

search warrants and arrests 

involving a number 

of internal agencies,” the 

commendation said. 

“He was instrumental in 

an investigation into steal 

from motor vehicle and 

fraud offences. 

“The subsequent 

search warrant during 

this investigation found 

a firearm which was used 

during a number of robberies 

in the metropolitan 

area. 

“Additionally, in February, 

2018 Senior Constable 

Wilson identified an 

offender involved in the 

theft of mail within the 

Ryde Police Area Command. 

“A subsequent search 

warrant led by Senior 

Constable Wilson resulted 

in the recovery of 

stolen mail, a quantity 

of prohibited drugs and 

property alleged to be 

stolen.” 

Robyn Cuddy was commended 

for her duties to 

support uniformed and 

plain clothes police, particularly 

rostering roles. 

Her commendation

“Robyn Cuddy takes 

initiative to go beyond 

the expected parameters 

of her job, often attending 

work before the commencement 

of her shift to 

ensure the rosters, and 

her other responsibilities, 

are met. 

“Robyn has been identified

Academia meets big bands on Radio 2RRR 

FORMED in 1935, the Count Basie Orchestra was one of the best known Big Bands of the 1930s and 1940s and popular 

world-wide. 

While most of the other bands 

folded at the end of the 1940s, the 

Count Basie Orchestra continued. 

Attesting to the esteem in which 

the band was held, in the 

1950s and 60s they performed 

and recorded with some of the 

best known vocalists of that 

era including Frank Sinatra, Ella 

Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstein, Sarah 

Vaughan, Sammy Davis Jr and 

the Mills Brothers. 

Count Basie himself died in 

1984, but under a succession of 

dedicated leaders since then, the 

band continues to this day and is 

coming to Australia in early August 

for a series of concerts. 

They also have a new album to 

be released in September. 

Scotty Barnhart is the current 

leader, appointed in 2013, tasked 

with carrying on the important 

legacy. 

But in addition to that role, between 

exhausting world tours and 

recording dates, Scotty is also 

a Professor of Music at Florida 

State University. 

He took time out last week to 

speak by phone to Brian Crabbe 

at the 

Ryde-Hunters Hill community 

radio station 2RRR. 

Brian presents a program called 

There Goes That Song Again featuring 

popular music of the 1940s, 

50s and 60s. 

He also has academic links, 

having come to community radio 

in retirement after a long university 

career. 

Within their conversation, Brian 

asked Scotty about the distinguishing 

factors that made the 

original band unique, and that 

contribute to its continuing success 

today. 

Listeners will be able to hear 

that interview, as well some of the 

band’s best known early recordings, 

some of their most recent 

recordings and some with the 

great vocalists of the 1950s and 

60s. It will be broadcast as a onehour 

special on 2RRR, 88.5FM 

and streamed on the web at 2rrr. 

org.au at 3pm on Tuesday July 3

Steamboat is the ultimate 

Way to defy winter

In Sodor there is Thomas the steam tank engine. In 

Eastwood there are Steamboats. Steamboat is a Chinese 

cooking method, prepared with a simmering pot of 

soup stock. While simmering, thinly sliced ingredients are 

placed in the pot and cooked at the table for immediate 

consumption. 

Culinary connoisseur, King Lee OAM, Superintendent of 

the Sydney Dimsum Chefs Association describes the magic 

of Steamboat as “…akin to that of a scout bonfire in which 

hungry people gathered for a common purpose while being 

enlightened by the synergy of fire, steam and friendship.” 

Lee, who is also my fellow practitioner in the High Court, 

makes this analogy “In court we use hot tubbing (for giving 

expert evidence), here (on a dining table) we use Steamboat to 

bring out the best.” 

In southwestern China Steamboat is so popular that it can 

be smelled in the air “ ‘Steamboat is in the air,’ “ says local 

senior and social club chairman, Peter Gu “Just like that song 

from my 90’s ‘Love is in the air’. You see, it is all about (putting 

love in) the soup base. People from different regions make their 

soup differently to satisfy their taste buds. For example, in the 

Sichuan region people make the soup so spicy that you can 

sweat by just sitting next to it.”

Centenary of WW1 1914 - 1918 

Villers-Bretonneux close 

Connection with Ryde

Ryde NSW has close ties with Villers- 

Bretonneux France going back over 100 

years to the so called Great War of 1914- 

1918. 

My father Arthur John Booth originally 

from Grenfell country NSW settled in Ryde 

after the war and service at Villers- 

Bretonneux when a teenager and 

established a business, The Gum Leaf 

cake shop, in Blaxland Road Ryde. 

He married a Miss Australia beauty queen 

Renee Buckland in St Anne’s church Ryde 

in January 1927 and subsequently had 

three children baptised at St Anne’s. 

Arthur Booth served as an Alderman on 

Ryde Municipal Council at the time of his 

death in 1952 aged 52. 

His brother elder Henry Booth was killed in 

action at Villers-Bretonneux June 7 1918 

aged 20. And their brother-in-law William 

Taylor Gibbs was killed in action nearby. 

The famous Villers-Bretonneux cross 

installed in St Anne’s Church Ryde has 

been reproduced in stone and erected in 

the Villers-Bretonneux Parish Church, 

pictured above right.

Hunters Hill considers 

selling Council land 

to ratepayers 

HUNTERS HILL ratepayers could be given an opportunity 

to buy strips of council owned land adjoining 

their homes under a proposal discussed at Monday 

night’s council meeting. 

Councillors who support the proposal said the sold 

off land would add value to homes – if it has no community 

use – and money from sales could fund council 

projects. 

“This is not a cash grab, it is nothing of the sort,” Clr 

Zac Miles said. 

The proposal is expected to be reviewed by a newly 

formed council and community run property committee 

and would specifically exclude land used for recreation, 

viewpoint and access. 

Deputy Mayor Ross Williams and Clr Jim Sanderson 

expressed concern about the new committee’s role but 

it was endorsed by other councillors with assurances it 

would only be an advisory body.

the proposed forced mergers is being chased by council 

staff. 

The Weekly Times recently reported that councils 

which defeated the forced mergers several months ago 

are owed millions of dollars by the government after 

courts awarded costs against it. 

General Manager Barry Smith said Hunters Hill will 

keep pressing the government to pay what it owes the 

council, estimated to be tens of thousands of dollars. 

‘We have requested our costs from the government 

and we have received no answer,” he said. 

“Lane Cove has taken other action and certainly the 

government has paid some costs, to some councils, but 

not to us.” 

The government had proposed the forced merger of 

Hunters Hill with Lane Cove and the City of Ryde.

Cocaine found by 

Eastwood patrol 

COCAINE is alleged to have been found by a police 

foot patrol in Eastwood on Saturday night. 

The patrol found the drug during the search of a 25 

year old Homebush West man and a car in Rowe Street 

around 10.30pm 

The search is also alleged to have found three bags 

of cannabis. 

The 25-year-old was arrested and issued with a Court 

Attendance Notice For Possess Prohibited Drug. 

He is due to appear in Burwood Local Court on August 

6. 

The three other men who were with him were issued 

with Cannabis Cautions.

CANNABIS was allegedly also found on an 18 year old 

Ermington man arrested in Gladesville last week after a 

drug detection dog made a positive indication. 

It is alleged he was carrying a medium sized resealable 

bag containing several smaller resealable bags of 

cannabis. 

A subsequent search found a set of scales, money and 

a mobile phone. 

He was charged with Supply Prohibited Drug, Possess 

Prohibited Drug and Deal With Property Proceeds 

Of Crime. 

Socceroos took another 

big leap in Russia 

BY the time you read this week’s TWT, you’ll know 

whether the Socceroos’ crucial Peru encounter has 

seen them move on to bigger and better things, or 

marked the end of Australia’s campaign at the 2018 

FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Sydney’s football community - Pat Barbalace and son 

Anthony (and a couple of members of their posse) - have 

been rubbing shoulders with some of the tournament’s 

big names.

market is almost half a billion dollars - wow!

online coverage - Optus should at least be applauded

of show panels.

Influx of lady golfers at Women’s 

International Golf Day event 

RYDE-Parramatta Golf Club recently celebrated Women’s International 

Golf Day for a second successive year - with 25 new beginner lady golfers 

given an education on the finer points of golf. 

The Day was held to 

encourage the rookie 

lady golfers and give 

them the opportunity 

to learn more about 

the game in a friendly 

and informative environment.

stalwart Jan Bush said 

the event proved a 

rousing success with 

the newcomers keen 

to participate in this 

great experience. 

Format of the day 

began with a chipping 

lesson from professional 

Glenn Kelly and 

Jessica Noh before the 

new golfers were then 

grouped into teams 

with lady members 

who introduced the 

ladies to the beautiful 

golf course by way of 

a 9 hole four ball ambrose 

competition. 

At the conclusion of 

the ambrose, a putting 

competition was held.

had Colette Blacklock,

NSW Mid-Amateur 

Championship at Bathurst 

Golf Club, assisting

“Colette is a current

“After joining in all 

of the activities, Piret 

spoke to the ladies before 

lunch highlighting 

the benefits of golf. 

She said it was a game 

where age was no barrier, 

(there are some 

ladies over the age of 

90 who still play), that 

it is a wonderful way to 

exercise and provides 

a lovely opportunity to 

form new friendships, 

have fun and organise 

many social outings 

together.”
