Fireworks Prohibition
in the Deed Restrictions
The Board asks that residents refrain from celebrating holidays with the
use of fireworks and fireworks display. This not only poses a nuisance
and disturbance to your neighbors, it also leaves a messy aftermath to be
cleaned up. Thank you for helping to keep Westheimer Lakes community
fireworks free!
PETS REMINDERS
Westheimer Lakes Community has had many loose dogs & cats lately. Please
do your part to keep your animals safe and contained on your property.
Please Control Your Pets!
It is a deed restriction violation if your pets are not confined to a fenced
backyard or within your home. They must not be allowed to bark all night or
cause a nuisance to your neighbors. They must also be on a leash at all times
when not in a contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility
to keep ALL areas of the community FREE from pet debris when walking your
pets. Please remember that cats must also be confined.
If you happen to come across vicious dogs or ANY loose dogs of this nature,
please contact Fort Bend County Animal Control at 281-342-1512. If you are
familiar with the property address the pets belong to, please feel free to
submit that information to FSR - Maren Grimes at maren.grimes@fsresidential.com
- to pursue the deed restriction violation. Notification and ample
time must be given to the owner to correct the violation prior to any further
pursuit by the Association.
Remember that all pets should always wear a collar with ID tag! Pet owners
should also consider pet microchips for identification in case your pet loses
their collar/ID tag.
LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE!
Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets
and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor
and do your part!
If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including
their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better
place this would be to live!
A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves.
They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need
to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your
neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.
UNWANTED SOLICITORS
NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community.
If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would
like to place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so.
Please be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only
(1) sign at your home.
If you feel in danger and think the solicitor will be in the community
long enough to call the authorities, we suggest you call the local Police
Department.
CANYON GATE EZ TAG LANE ACCESS
Please be patient when approaching the EZ Tag
barrier arm and obey the signs. After stopping at
the stop sign, proceed slowly and wait until the
barrier arm opens fully. Bumping or hitting the
barrier arm causes costly and unnecesary repairs
to the Association.
If there is a car in front of you, please remain at
the stop sign until the car has gone through the
arm and the arm is closed. The barrier arm closes
after each vehicle every time.
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2018
Significance of Independence Day 2018
Independence Day 2018, also known as Fourth of July, is a federal holiday
observed yearly on July fourth. It is the anniversary of the publication
of the declaration of independence of the United States of America from
Great Britain in 1776.
History of Independence Day
The history of Independence Day 2018 dates back to the 18 th century
and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives
of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a
resolution that would declare independence of the United States from
Great Britain. On July 2 nd , the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies
from Great Britain occurred, when the Second Continental Congress
voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed
by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. Two days later its delegates adopted
the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas
Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the
Declaration of Independence on July 4 th and most have concluded that
the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August
2, 1776 and not on July 4 th as it is commonly believed. The holiday remains
to be celebrated on the fourth of July. Coincidentally, both John
Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence
later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the
same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50 th anniversary of the Declaration.
Traditions of Independence Day
Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues,
showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of
political freedom and patriotism. Many people display the American
flag outside their homes or buildings. Additionally, Independence Day
fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national
anthem and, in capable military bases, a salute of one gun for each state
in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence
Day at noon.
When is Independence Day 2018
Independence Day 2018 is a federal holiday and falls on the fourth of
July. The day of the week that the holiday falls on, changes each year.
This year, July 4 th falls on a Wednesday.
HOW TO TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN
WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES
In my role as executive director at Shield-Bearer Counseling Centers,
I am frequently asked by parents or teachers how to help children when
they or their community experiences a tragedy.
Every child reacts differently to loss. Younger children handle the
news differently than older children. A child’s personality and values
influence their reaction. Parents and teachers may notice children
displaying a greater amount of energy following a tragedy. Energy
released by their body’s natural response when safety is threatened
will find its way into more irritability, fidgeting and inability to focus
on tasks at hand.
But there are some things individuals who are raising or working with
children can do.
Model calmness.
Children will look to parents and other adults to cue their interpretation
and reaction to the tragedy. When children see the adults around them
remaining calm, they will be more easily reassured of their own safety.
Help them talk.
Parents frequently have difficulty discussing such horrible tragedies
with their children. As with other times of loss, they do not know exactly
what to say. Being available to listen to what children want to say
will likely be more helpful than putting together a lecture. Encourage
children to express how they feel when they are ready to discuss it.
Honestly answer questions.
When children do not know the answers, they will ask questions. Parents
who patiently attempt to answer tough questions will see their
children move through the pain of the tragic event. If you don’t know
the answers, tell them so. Reassuring them of their present safety will
help them learn to overcome fears that they might be struggling with.
Limit access to tragedy news.
Monitoring your children’s access to news reports of the tragedy will help
reduce the possibility of nightmares. When a child watches news programs
about a tragedy, parents should be present to discuss the contents of reports.
Keep them busy.
One of the most important things that a parent can do to help their
children work through a tragedy is to maintain the routine and structure
of their children’s lives. Keep appointments. Carry on with chores and
responsibilities. Meet obligations.
Help them help.
Every person touched by a tragedy is motivated to help in some way.
The negative emotions of fear, sorrow and anger can be channeled into
acts of kindness. Having a child gather items for tragedy victims, write
a thank-you note to the first responders or draw a picture for someone
intimately involved will help them feel they are making a difference.
These actions can help them regain a sense of control over their situation.
Remember that each child is an individual. What helps one child might
not help another. If there are significant changes in behavior, mood or
sleeping patterns, it is important to make a visit to a physician or professional
counselor to assess what professional help might be available.
Above all else, let them know they are loved.
4 SUPER HYDRATING FOODS
If advice to drink more water falls on deaf ears for you because you
just don’t enjoy the taste of water or you always forget to pack a water
bottle, you don’t have to suffer from dehydration as a result. You can
seek more water from other sources - primarily from foods containing a
higher percentage of water content. Incidentally, the selection of produce
available in the summer season is packed with hydrating choices, so try
incorporating more of these into your diet to get the hydration you need.
Fresh Berries
If you’ve ever bitten into a fresh blueberry, strawberry or raspberry and
had brightly colored juice burst out of the fruit, you can see how these
fruits make a hydrating option. It’s currently the peak of berry season,
so pick up a few pints at your grocery store or farmer’s market. If berries
aren’t your preference, peaches, nectarines and pears are also juicy,
flavorful options at the height of their harvest season.
Radish
Celery has a reputation for its high-water content, but it doesn’t offer
much by way of flavor and some find the texture less than desirable.
Radishes have just about as much water as celery, but they offer a delightful
peppery kick, making them a perfect addition to any salad or a
great choice for dipping in hummus or guacamole.
Zucchini
Zucchini contain more than 90% water and they are one of the most
versatile summer vegetables. You can easily marinate zucchini spears to
throw in the oven or on the grill, spiralize them for a low-carb pasta substitute
or bread and bake them for a healthier alternative to French fries.
Citrus Fruit
An orange or grapefruit might be a good start to your day, especially if
you choose the whole fruit rather than just juice. When you eat whole
fruits, you’ll not only get plenty of water, but you will have the benefit
of added fiber and pure nutrients straight from the source.
NATIONAL MAC AND CHEESE DAY
One of the classic comfort foods earns a place of honor on
July 14 th . It is National Mac and Cheese Day!
Made with macaroni noodles, cream or milk and the golden
with bacon and jalapenos, there’s a combination for everyone. Mix
up the cheeses or load up on seasonings, set the broiler for a couple
of minutes at the end of the cooking time and let the cheese get a
nice toasty crust.
10 REASONS WHY READING IS SO IMPORTANT
1. IMAGINATION
By reading, you are exposed to so many wonderful things. This helps your
imagination when it comes to creating and thinking. By reading, you are
painting those pictures of the story in your mind. Books can take you anywhere
you want to go.
2. FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION
When you are reading, you are focusing and concentrating on one thing. By
sitting still and reading, you are training your body/mind and your child’s
to slow down, relax and focus on what you are reading. This helps you/
your child focus and concentrate on other activities because you are used
to doing it.
3. READING IMPROVES YOUR MEMORY
When you read a book, you are taking in all that the book is about. People,
places, things… When you read you are using your memory muscle which
lies in the Cerebrum part of your brain. Using this muscle helps your memory
long term. I’m sure you’ve probably heard of muscle memory, same
kind of thing.
4. READING HELPS WITH COMMUNICATION
Reading to your children helps build a bond and open up communication.
It’s always important to be able to talk with your kids especially when they
get into their teenage years. Start reading to them and communicating when
they are young so they have that connection and comfort with talking to you.
It also helps with communicating as adults and gives you more to talk about.
5. ENTERTAINMENT
Reading is the best cheap or free entertainment you can get. Love your
library and any bookseller, because these books can open up the world
you might never have imagined.
6. BONDING
Nurturing and one-on-one attention from parents during reading encourages
children to form a positive association with books and reading. Also,
goes with #4 above - Communication. Reading to your children is another
way of showing them love.
7. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Babies and children learn to talk by hearing words. The more they hear, the
more likely they are to talk and understand what’s being said. Your child’s
language skills and literacy depend on you talking and reading to them.
Now doesn’t that sound important?!
8. CHEAP OR FREE EDUCATION
Reading a book for something that you want to learn about saves you so
much money. We all know how expensive taking classes can be, so why not
spend time reading about it instead. You can teach yourself with specific
books. Same goes for children. If they are interested in learning about
rainbows, they can read books about weather. Or you can read to them.
Supplying a variety of books to your children will pique their interests and
get them learning even more.
9. FLUENCY
Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy and expression.
Powerful and effective language.
10. READING MAKES YOU SMARTER
We know its been proven that reading makes you smarter. Readers display
greater knowledge of how things work, vocabulary and language development,
as well as information on people, places and things.
Summer Reading
and
Library News
SUMMER READING CLUBS “Libraries Rock!”
Through-August 31st
Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the
summer to encourage reading among readers of all ages. Library programs
and activities begin during the week of June 4th and continue
through July 28th. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading
Clubs (SRC) and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county
of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library
or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.
fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image, which
became available on May 28th. When the online registration form
has been completed, readers will then have their own online page
on which to record their books or reading time. Reading rewards can
be redeemed beginning Monday, June 4th. Prizes must be collected
from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on the
registration form. The last day to pick up awards is September 1st. The
Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries,
the Friends organizations that support the county library system and
the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states
working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading
program materials for public libraries.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN
Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to
come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting
programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer!
Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they
will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or
have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive
a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a
pencil for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read.
For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on
a picture of a drum to be displayed in that branch library. The names
of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area
stores - donated by the Friends of the Library organizations - that will
be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing
scheduled in August at each library location.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE
Area youth in grades 6-8 can participate in the SRC by logging online the
time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books
as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of
time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading,
each reader will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours
(1,200 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The names of
participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered
into a drawing for a
$25 gift card - donated by the Friends of the
library - that will be awarded to one lucky reader
at each branch library in a drawing that will take place in August.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate
in the YA & Adult SRC by reading books and participating in
optional weekly “challenges” that can be completed individually at
home online. Completing the challenges will gain readers additional
entries for the drawings for an FBCL mobile power pack that will take
place twice a month in June and July at each branch library for readers
who log in and record their reading each week. All YA and adult
readers who complete the goal of reading five books will earn a dual
highlighter/pen or a geometric coloring bookmark. In addition, the
names of participants who complete at least five books will be entered
into a drawing for a $25 gift card - donated by the Friends of the library
- that will be awarded to one reader at each branch library in a drawing
that will take place at the end of July. An ultimate grand prize will be
awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants in the
YA/Adult Summer Reading Club who complete the program by reading
five books will be entered into a drawing for a 16 GB Fire HD 8 tablet
with a red case, which will be awarded to one winner in the library
system on August 6th. The last day to pick up awards is September 1st.
