The Upper Engadin never fails to enthral guests with its wealth of contrasts.
For this wide valley, with its many sparkling lakes and the exceptional quality
of light found here, offers extraordinary variety. Thrilling mountain and sporting
activities against a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop, unspoilt natural
landscapes, world-class cultural and sporting events as well as a host of gastronomic
treats are all sure to inspire you. You will also be bewitched by the
glamour and the multi-faceted appeal of St. Moritz, famous worldwide for its
sublime location, its scintillating events, its top-class hotels and restaurants
and its legendary “champagne climate”.
Enjoy active relaxation or just pure tranquillity. The Engadin St. Moritz region
offers everything for an unforgettable holiday – to satisfy any budget. With the
cable cars, funiculars and chairlifts (which guests staying at least two nights at
any of more than 90 selected hotels in the valley can use free of charge), you
glide up into a spectacular mountain world where you can hike, bike, climb or
simply stroll to your heart’s content. Down in the valley, the sublime lakes offer
swimming, sailing and windsurfing, while golfers are superbly catered for at
courses full of variety. You can experience unspoilt nature close-up on a walk
through the Swiss National Park, or you can let the majestic mountain scenery
glide leisurely past, on a spectacular ride on the Rhaetian Railway – either
on the Glacier Express, or on the famous Albula-Bernina line, which has been
declared UNESCO World Heritage.
Heaven for hikers
The high valley of the Upper Engadin with its varied 580-kilometre (360-mile)
network of trails is a dream destination for hikers. The contrasts that characterise
this region are bewitching: gently sloping hills draped with lush alpine
meadows stand close by mighty glaciers and towering snow-capped peaks.
The idyllic trails in the valley, along the famous Engadin lakes, are particularly
well suited to families with young children, as they take pushchairs comfortably.
Those preferring something more ambitious can make for one of the four
hiking areas served by funiculars, cable cars, chairlifts and gondolas: Corviglia/
Piz Nair, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza and Muottas Muragl/Alp Languard.
All offer delightful hikes high up, with spectacular panoramic views.
Walking fun for everyone
Day walks, multi-day tours and special hikes, with or without a guide – the
Upper Engadin has unforgettable experiences to suit everyone who enjoys being
active on holiday. You can experience the extraordinary world of glaciers and
their fascinating contrasts up close on an impressive glacier hike on the Bernina
massif. The guided excursions last for around five hours. Another unforgettable
experience for the adventurous is the so-called Bernina Trek. This spectacular
trail can be tackled by walkers in good physical shape in seven days. The cultural
highlights of the Engadin, meanwhile, are the focus of the various cultural
walks on offer. Expert guides lead visitors in the footsteps of the philosopher
Friedrich Nietzsche or the painter Giovanni Segantini, or along the trail of the
valley’s art treasures. The region’s gastronomic delights, in turn, are waiting to
be discovered – and savoured – on the Via Gastronomica from the Furtschellas
top station down to the delightful Val Fex. The hike lasts anything from two to
five hours, depending on the route chosen.
Suggestions for great hikes
Via Engiadina panoramic hike Anyone who walks the delightful Via Engiadina
gets to experience the whole sunny valley from Maloja to Zernez, with all its
contrasts. The five-day, contrast-filled tour leads from Maloja via Grevasalvas
to St. Moritz, over Alp Muntatsch to Samedan, across the foot of the Albula Pass
to Zuoz, and ends in Zernez.
Corvatsch middle station–Val Roseg–Pontresina This varied, mediumgrade
walk takes about four hours, and leads over imposing slabs of rock, across
romantic flower-filled meadows and along fragrant forest paths. Along the way
hikers have wonderful views of the Piz Roseg and the Piz Bernina. Idyllic picnic
spots, as well as the Fuorcla Surlej hut, make perfect places to rest and linger.
Muottas Muragl–Segantini hut A short funicular ride from the valley up to
Muottas Muragl leads to the start of this beautiful mountain walk, which has
the Bernina massif – with the Piz Palü and Piz Bernina – as a magnificent backdrop.
Well-made and clearly marked paths climb to 2,730 metres (8,957ft) and
the celebrated Segantini hut, where the painter Giovanni Segantini died. From
this magnificent viewpoint, the whole Engadin and its lakes seem to lie at your
feet.
Morteratsch–Boval hut This walk offers a magnificent close-up experience
of a spectacular glacier landscape. Starting at the Rhaetian Railway station at
Morteratsch, the trail climbs towards the Morteratsch Glacier and up to the
Boval hut, one of seven Swiss Alpine Club huts in the region. The terrace offers
fabulous views of the glacier.
Val Bever, Val Chamuera and Val Susauna The lower stretch of the Upper
Engadin offers idyllic side valleys that promise tranquillity and memorable
encounters with nature.
S-chanf–Val Trupchun This route leads from S-chanf via the Varusch hut into
the Val Trupchun in the Swiss National Park, along a high trail through lush
alpine meadows. Along the 3½-hour walk, hikers can observe impressive wildlife
including ibex, bearded vultures and marmots.
MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES
TIPS FOR UNFORGETTABLE EXCURSIONS
Since July 2008, the “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscape” has
been part of UNESCO World Heritage.
Bernina Express The Bernina Express is the most beautiful link between
the alpine Engadin and the Mediterranean south, running from St. Moritz to
the picturesque town of Tirano in the Valtellina. The spectacular ride takes in
55 tunnels and 196 bridges, as well as gradients of up to 7 per cent – without
the benefit of cog traction. The journey, past important cultural sites and
the picturesque villages of the secluded Valposchiavo, is rich in contrasts. At
first, the glaciers you see through the panoramic windows seem close enough
to touch; soon after, you are gazing out on the palms of the sunny south.
Glacier Express The slowest express train in the world – as the Glacier Express
is affectionately known – offers a wonderfully close-up experience of the
majestic landscape of the Swiss Alps. On the 7½-hour journey from St. Moritz to
Zermatt, the train passes over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. A particularly
pleasurable way to enjoy the unforgettable views is over a mouth-watering
meal served at your seat.
Gourmet Train With the Rhaetian Railway you can explore the gastronomy
as well as the landscape of Graubünden. The Gourmet Train carries you through
a gorgeous landscape – over viaducts, through tunnels, past lakes – from
one gastronomic treat to the next. At each stop you disembark and let your
taste buds be pampered – before travelling on to the next gourmet delight.

Rail-trail offers The Rhaetian Railway passes through the region’s most
beautiful hiking areas, and offers a variety of special deals for walkers. These
are available along the length of the Bernina and Albula lines. For further
information, visit www.rhb.ch.
Romantic horse-drawn carriage rides One of the most enjoyable ways to
explore the Upper Engadin and its dreamy side valleys is on a romantic ride in
a horse-drawn carriage. Whether by day or in the evening, you enjoy the beauty
of the landscape in total relaxation to the sound of the leisurely trotting
of the horses. At your destination you can feast on gastronomic delights before
setting off home.
Horse riding Exploring the picturesque side valleys on horseback, following
mule trails through aromatic coniferous forests and across flower-filled alpine
meadows… You do not have to be a horse fanatic to enjoy riding in the Engadin.
Europe’s highest scheduled boat service The highest-altitude scheduled
boat service in Europe has a long tradition: it has been operating on Lake Sils
for more than 100 years. A ride in the small boat plying between Sils Maria
and Maloja makes a delightful excursion. Along the 40-minute journey, the
boat calls at three stops, where you can step ashore or embark once again.
TOP-CLASS MOUNTAIN BIKE ADVENTURES
Magical light in the idyllic high valley; an inspiring sense of space; and tremendous
variety on offer – that’s the mountain summer in Engadin St. Moritz.
Leisure riders, athletic bikers and keen explorers alike can discover the region
on a variety of inspirational tours. From relaxed rides along the river Inn
to challenging high-mountain single-track trails, the region’s 400km (250
miles) of bike routes offer something for everyone. Meanwhile, the Engadin
St. Moritz holiday region is constantly improving its trails and facilities for
mountain bikers – of course in a sensitive way, in harmony with the glorious
surrounding nature. Accessing the whole valley is easy, as riders can travel
with their bikes on the trains of the Rhaetian Railway, the PostBuses and the
Engadin Buses – and, best of all, on the funicular, cable car and gondola up
to the magnificent terrain around the mountain of Corviglia/Marguns, from
which a host of scenic trails fan out. A particular thrill is the ride from Corviglia
through the soft rock formations at Alp Nova. Rounding off the experience
are the Bike Hotels, which offer every comfort to bikers – and their bikes too.
And thanks to the attractive Mountainbike Special package, riders can enjoy
the glorious terrain of the Engadin at highly favourable rates.
Tours to suit every taste
The Upper Engadin’s extensive route network offers everything from beginner
rides to alpine day-tours. The three-hour Suvretta Loop leads from Corviglia
along the flank of the Piz Nair up to the Suvretta Pass – before a demanding

descent to the Val Bever, with a vertical drop of 960 metres (3,150ft). Rather
more leisurely is a ride along the banks of the river Inn. Mountain bikers
tackling the stretch from La Punt via Zuoz to Zernez can round off the day with
a visit to the Swiss National Park or the Zernez Family Pool. Particularly varied
and impressive is the scenic stretch of the Via Engiadina linking the Julier and
Suvretta valleys, which offers magnificent views of the Upper Engadin lakes.
A close-up experience of a spectacular glacier landscape, meanwhile, is to be
had on the flowing trail from Pontresina through Morteratsch up to the Bernina
Pass. The effort of the climb is rewarded with breathtaking views of the
Bernina massif, and a thrilling descent into the Valposchiavo. Many other exciting
mountain bike trails are waiting to be discovered; a new mountain bike
map is available from local tourist information offices and from cable car and
funicular stations.
In good company
Engadin Bike Tours offers everything from beginners’ courses, short rides and
day tours of all levels of difficulty to bike weekends and week-long tours, as
well as training in riding technique. Locally expert guides guarantee a carefree
adventure. Anyone wishing to explore the superb terrain up on Corviglia with
a qualified guide can book one of the daily guided bike tours. Experienced
riders, meanwhile, can join a thrilling Frischi Bike Safari. This takes in numerous
single-track trails against spectacular mountain backdrops, with 800 vertical
metres (2,600ft) of climbs – and more than 5,000 vertical metres (16,500ft) of
descents.
GREENS TO DREAM ABOUT
The golfing history of the Upper Engadin began as far back as 1889 with the first
golf course in continental Europe, a 9-hole course laid out along Lake St. Moritz
by Caspar Badrutt and a couple of British enthusiasts. This was followed in
1891 by the 9-hole course in today’s Kulm Park. Today the region, with its outstanding
and varied golf courses set against breathtaking mountain backdrops,
attracts golfers from all over the world.
Kulm Golf St. Moritz In the summer of 2001, the historic greens of the Kulm
Park were redesigned by the St. Moritz golf architect Mario Verdieri and the
Kulm Hotel. The new 9-hole Kulm Golf Course (par 27) is beautifully laid out on
landscaped terrain, comprising short distances but offering challenges for
every golfer. Beginners can enjoy their first golf experiences on the driving
range, with 16 tees, and on the pitching and putting greens; the Kulm Golf
Academy offers individual and group tuition for beginners as well as more
advanced players. The course is reserved for experienced golfers. After a game,
well-deserved refreshment can be ordered at the pleasant Chesa al Parc club
restaurant.

Samedan golf course This classic golf course is the oldest in Switzerland, and
one of the oldest in continental Europe. The 18-hole championship course
(par 72) with a length of 6,217 metres (6,799 yards) offers thrills for every golfer.
Refreshment is available at the clubhouse restaurant. The Engadin Golf Center
academy offers individual and group tuition for all levels of ability. Carts and
trolleys can be hired; caddies are available on request.
Zuoz-Madulain golf course Just a short way down the valley lies the newest
addition to Engadin’s golfing scene: the Zuoz-Madulain course, which opened
in 2003. The 18-hole championship course (par 72) enjoys an idyllic alpine setting,
and over a length of 6,007 metres (6,569 yards) offers great variety. Facilities
include a restaurant, pro shop, the Engadin Golf Center academy providing
individual and group tuition for all levels of ability, chipping and putting area,
and driving range with 40 tees, part-covered. Carts and E-trolleys are available
for hire.
Sils/Margna golf course The practice course at the Romantik Hotel Margna in
Sils-Baselgia, with its own academy golf course (par 6, 3 holes), driving range,
putting and chipping green and pro shop with cafeteria, offers experienced
and novice golfers alike outstanding training opportunities in an exclusive setting.
OTHER EXCITING SPORTS ADVENTURES
High-altitude hikes and climbs
Anyone keen on bagging an alpine summit or two is spoilt for choice: with
numerous peaks of over 3,000 metres (10,000ft), the Upper Engadin offers an
exceptional variety of high-mountain thrills. Those who prefer hiking boots
and walking poles to crampons and an ice axe can opt for one of the many
alpine hiking routes. Other exciting climbing experiences include the highrope
challenge courses at Gitögla, the Piz Trovat via ferrata, and the 18 practice
rock walls which attract not only experienced climbers but also beginners and
active families.
Nordic Walking
Devotees of this increasingly popular activity – which makes use of dedicated
Nordic Walking poles – will find an exceptional variety of trails: a network of
225km (140 miles), stretching from Maloja to Zernez. Every day, guests can
explore a new “Nordic Walking Park” until they have covered the whole valley.

Water sports to suit every taste
Sailing The Upper Engadin offers unforgettable thrills for sailors thanks to the
spectacular mountain setting at 1,800 metres (5,900ft) and the glorious wind
conditions. Every day the Maloja wind builds up around noon to force 3–6, and
only drops again at sunset.
Windsurfing The play of wind on water is a sight guaranteed to set windsurfers’
pulses racing as they catch their first glimpse of beautiful Lake Silvaplana.
A particular attraction comes in the form of Stand Up Paddle trips, on which you
paddle, accompanied or unaccompanied, across the mirror-like surface of the
Engadin lakes.
Kitesurfing Among aficionados, the quality of kitesurfing on offer at Lake Silvaplana
has long been an open secret. The dependable Maloja wind makes for
speeds of up to 80kph (50mph), jumps as high as 30 metres (100ft), and flights
lasting up to 20 seconds.
Swimming Alongside the four large, well-known lakes along the main valley,
the Upper Engadin has several smaller mountain lakes hidden in the forest that
make for an inviting swim on hot summer days – such as the Lägh da Cavloc
near Maloja, the Lej Nair, whose surface mirrors the massif of the Piz Corvatsch,
the Lej Marsch, which lies just below the Lej Nair and the popular Lej da Staz,
and the golf lakes just outside Samedan.
Surfing on Lake Silvaplana, and Lej da Staz swimming lake
Weather and climate in the Engadin
The Upper Engadin enjoys a dry, continental climate. Characteristics include
low humidity and big variations in temperature between summer and winter,
and between day and night. On fine days in summer, the Maloja wind begins
to blow around midday and reaches speeds of 40kph (25mph) or more, bringing
a refreshing coolness and creating excellent conditions for windsurfers, sailors
and glider pilots.
Glaciers in the Engadin At 7km (4 miles), the Morteratsch Glacier is the longest
in the Engadin, and the tenth longest in Switzerland. About 160 years ago,
during the Little Ice Age, it reached almost as far as today’s railway station. The
mighty lateral moraines piled high with rock debris, which reveal the extent of
the glacier in 1850, still dominate the flanks of the valley.

Captivating forests of larch and Swiss stone pine
The delightful play of colours through the seasons of the gnarled larch trees is
one of the characteristics of the Upper Engadin. The pale green shoots, golden
pollen cones and red cone blossoms of spring give way in summer to luscious
green cones and needles. In autumn, when the needles turn golden yellow, the
whole valley is blanketed in gold.
The Swiss stone pine can grow to be 1,400 years old, and is ideally adapted to
the harsh winter climate. One of the oldest specimens in the Upper Engadin
stands below Muottas da Schlarigna. The tree can withstand temperatures
ranging from +40 to -47 Celsius (+104 to -40 Fahrenheit), and as a result dominates
the upper limits of mountain forests. It also has medicinal properties:
its scent has a relaxing, soothing effect on the body.
Swiss National Park
The Swiss National Park, covering an area of 170 sq. km (66 sq. miles), is the
country’s only national park and comprises a particularly impressive stretch of
untouched alpine landscape. It is home to 30 species of mammal and more
than 100 species of bird, as well as an astonishing variety of plant life – more
than 650 species in all.
ST. MORITZ
STYLE, ELEGANCE AND HIGH CLASS
St. Moritz’s name stands for quality, style, elegance and high class. Originally
it owed its importance to its mineral springs, frequented for more than 3,000
years. The resort is famously the birthplace of winter tourism and winter sports
in the 19th century, as well as the venue for two winter Olympic Games (1928
und 1948) and numerous ski and bobsleigh world championships. The summer
season offers a wide variety of exceptional leisure and sports activities, not to
mention cultural attractions, all manner of shopping options and a programme
of world-class events. The superlative hotels and the award-winning restaurants
are also open throughout the summer, ready to pamper guests. An attractive
mixture of nature, sports, culture, activity and tranquillity is as much a
distinguishing feature of the jewel of the Upper Engadin as its privileged position
beside and above the lake.
Champagne climate St. Moritz is famous worldwide for its “champagne climate”
– not a reference to its champagne-drinking guests, but to the sparkling
and invigorating climate of the Upper Engadin. The geographical location on
the southern side of the Alps enables St. Moritz and the whole of the Upper
Engadin to benefit from the warm climate of Italy during the summer. The ori-

entation of the broad valley, wide-open towards the south-west and the sun,
together with the purity of the air, make for wonderfully bright and warmthgiving
sunshine. The temperature in summer, however, is never oppressive –
thanks to the pleasantly cooling effect of the refreshing Maloja wind from the
south-west, which blows during sunny weather. These specific climatic factors,
the altitude at 1,800 metres (5,900ft) above sea level, the pure air and the
sunshine, together with the beauty of the landscape, have a stimulating effect
on the human body – especially on respiration, circulation and blood formation.
World-class hotels and restaurants St. Moritz offers an incomparable concentration
of 5-star hotels. These elegant and prestigious properties delight guests
with their glamorous atmosphere and their top-class restaurants serving the
very finest in local, national and international cuisine. In addition, numerous
exclusive restaurants that have been awarded GaultMillau points or Michelin
stars offer a host of gastronomic treats to suit every palate.
Seductive shopping A shopping expedition in St. Moritz is a treat full of surprises.
Many well-known designers are represented with their own elegant
boutiques. Traditional sports suppliers, tempting souvenir and gift shops and
exclusive, mouth-watering delicatessens also belong to the wide variety of
shopping on offer in this chic alpine town. Turn off the main road and into
one of the small side alleys, and you will find quaint shops where you can pick
up genuine Upper Engadin products – and perhaps make the odd lucky find
to round off your shopping adventure.
Top treats after sunset Night owls can choose between the historic bars
of the great hotels, exclusive lounge bars, legendary clubs and a host of other
venues. Guests seeking a uniquely thrilling evening can try their luck at
the Casino St. Moritz in the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains – over a game
of roulette or blackjack.
but stylish charm, menus feature exquisite local specialities such as “capuns”
(chard-wrapped dumplings), “pizzoccheri” (buckwheat pasta) and “plain in
pigna” (baked potato hash browns with ham and bacon). World-class exotic
fare as well as classical cuisine is presented in the many restaurants crowned
with GaultMillau points or Michelin stars, which are particularly abundant in
the valley. The restaurants of the top hotels, too, serve national and international
cuisine at the very highest level.
ST. MORITZ
St. Moritz is the most scintillating mountain resort in the world. Its name is protected as a
trademark, and stands worldwide for style, elegance and high class. And it is much more
than just a holiday resort. St. Moritz was the Birthplace of winter tourism (1864) and winter
sports (1885), and has been the venue for two winter Olympic Games (1928 and 1948) as
well as numerous ski and bobsleigh world championships. Yet St. Moritz originally owed
its importance to its mineral springs, frequented for more than 3,000 years, which long
ago established the town as a popular summer health resort. Today, St. Moritz is simply
the world’s number-one mountain holiday destination. Holidaymakers are guaranteed a
remarkable array of sports and leisure facilities and activities, as well as a rich cultural life,
abundant and varied shopping, and scintillating world-class events. International guests
enjoy the modern alpine lifestyle that they find there – embodied by the famous top-class
hotels, along with some of the finest restaurants in Switzerland. In addition to its spectacularly
beautiful location above the lake, St. Moritz offers a unique mixture of nature,
culture, sports, activity and tranquillity.

Imposing mountain peaks and glaciers surround the sunny, wind-protected Engadin holiday and highaltitude
spa resort of Pontresina. The fascinating combination of old, traditional Engadin houses and stylish
hotel buildings from the Belle Époque era lend this place its unique charm. Situated at the foot of the
Bernina Massif, Pontresina is a paradise for mountaineers and hikers, and treats guests to a magnificent
view of the highest peaks in the eastern Alps, such as the Piz Palü and the Piz Bernina. This spectacular
Alpine world is accessible thanks to 580 km of hiking paths. The most attractive areas around Pontresina
are the ruggedly romantic Val Roseg, with the imposing Roseg glacier, and the Alp Languard, reachable
by chairlift, where with a bit of luck visitors can observe large numbers of ibexes. The range on offer is
rounded off by 150 km of biking trails, climbing parks and two thrilling via ferratas, as well as a modern
congress & cultural centre and a new swimming pool & spa complex.
Celerina’s cableways transport guests from the endlessly long valley plains up through “cloud nine” into
the heart of Paradise. On the Muottas Muragl hikers can revel in challenging paths and spectacular panoramic
views over the Upper Engadin lake landscape. On the Corviglia/Marguns, mountain bikers will delight
in the demanding biking trails, while at the summit station families have fun at the large playground or
the new paddling lake. The route back down to Celerina can be covered on foot via the Fairytale Trail or
by mountain scooter. And here, a short distance outside the village, the Church of San Gian – dating from
the 14th century – basks majestically in the sunlight. In Celerina, things do not come to a halt just because
it is evening. Its innovative hotels make sure that there is always something going on – a concert, a party,
always small, always well-organised, and exactly for that reason so enjoyable. It is also true to say that
Celerina sounds great! For every August, the New Orleans jazz scene convenes in this sun-blessed village.
Yet anyone seeking peace and tranquillity will also find it here – on the valley plains, with their sun-filled
forests, in the heart of which the romantic Lake Staz invites visitors to bathe.
This enterprising leisure paradise is set amidst the Upper Engadin lake landscape. Surrounded by imposing
three-thousanders, including the Corvatsch, the three districts of Silvaplana, Champfèr and Surlej form
a charming cluster of holiday locations, offering a wide range of sports facilities and activities for everyone
who is after a bit of adventure. Benefiting the most from the reliable Maloja wind are, of course,
the wind- and kitesurfers; here they can enjoy the best conditions for their sport far and wide. However,
mountain bikers and hikers, too, will find an abundance of possibilities right on their hotel doorstep.
And those who really want to switch off can get themselves a fishing rod and go off fishing. Equally as
varied as the range of sports activities is the local hotel and gastronomy scene, which also presents itself
as being agreeably young and trendy.
Writers such as Nietzsche, artists like Beuys, and musicians such as David Bowie drew their inspiration
from the impressive wide open spaces and the magical light here, and they played a considerable role in
establishing Sils as THE cultural centre of the Engadin. These days, guests from all over the world and
locals describe their village as a place abounding in life force and natural earth energy. For particularly
high values on the Bovis scale – the life force index – have been measured here. Nestling idyllically
between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana, the village lies at the gateway to the romantic Fex Valley, and is
the perfect departure point for walks in this light-flooded valley landscape. Those for whom the sky’s
the limit will find an abundance of varied routes for hiking and mountain biking tours on Sils’ very own
mountain, the Furtschellas. Furthermore, a trip on Lake Sils on board Europe’s highest-altitude scheduled
boats allows visitors to enjoy the magnificent alpine backdrop from a particularly spectacular perspective.
MALOJA
Maloja is the only community in the Upper Engadin that is officially recognised as a family resort with a
“Families welcome” label. And the village on the pass bordering on to the primeval Bergaglia region
is doing everything it can to live up to its family-friendly reputation. It runs a second-hand shop for
children’s articles, guests can book a babysitter via the Tourist Information Office, and there are pizzamaking
courses for children. On Lake Sils, younger guests can build floats, the adventure park provides
the perfect opportunity to let off steam, and Lake Cavloccio, at 1907 m, invites visitors to bathe. However,
not only families feel at home amidst this spectacular landscape. In the past, the fascinating interplay
between light and shade has continually attracted artists. Giovanni Segantini used the Maloja landscape
as the subject for many of his pictures, and it was here that the artist spent the last years of his life.
Giovanni Giacometti, the father of Alberto Giacometti, was also greatly inspired by the natural surroundings.
The spirit of these artists still continues to inspire visitors in the form of exhibitions, readings and
concerts.
SAMEDAN
Samedan owes its importance to its central location in the heart of the Upper Engadin: it serves as a hub
for the Rhaetian Railway and is the ideal departure point for sporting activities and excursions into
the beautiful Upper Engadin landscape. Samedan is a Mecca for hang-gliding enthusiasts, while hikers
and bikers delight in the breathtaking alpine backdrop. Directly at the gateway to the village is the
highest lying golf course in Europe. And the most spectacular panorama mountain far and wide – the
Muottas Muragl – offers stunning views that will take your breath away. Yet in spite of its political
and economic significance and its tradition-based cosmopolitan attitude, Samedan has still retained
its traditional Engadin heritage and lifestyle. The picturesque village centre enchants visitors with its
authentic Engadin houses. And its museums, “La Tuor”, the oldest building in Samedan, and the Chesa
Planta provide a unique insight into Rhaeto-Romanic culture.
BEVER
In the very heart of the high-lying Engadin Valley is the charming village of Bever, which does nothing
more passionately than tells stories – with its quaint gardens and deep-set windows. With its flowers
that adorn the niches and steps. With its mighty, newly renovated church tower, which rises up towards
the blue sky and boldly strikes the time, time that seems to pass by at a more leisurely pace than elsewhere.
However, Bever’s most beautiful stories are told just beyond the confines of the village – along
the Fairytale Trail through the Bever Valley. In the mystical, rugged nature, a path guides visitors from
one fairytale to the next, all of them penned by Engadin authors and brought to life by sculptures created
by local artists. Stories about witches, bears and fairies. And – it is rumoured – if you listen very carefully
during your excursion into the romantic Val Bever, you might even hear the voice of a real-life gnome…
Beautifully adorned farmhouses and stately patrician houses from the 16th and 17th centuries stand
majestically in the village. The Albertini buildings, with their Biedermeier façades looking out onto the
streets, and the imposing Sandoz House, with its hall-like passage leading into the middle of the
building. And of course the famous restaurant, the Chesa Pirani, with its Baroque wooden panelled
room and its two Michelin stars. However, the picturesque village also enjoys a strategically favourable
location at the sunny foot of the Albula Pass, directly by the River Inn. Or in other words, at the departure
point for varied tours by mountain bike, racing bike, inline skates or on foot – for example, along
the high-altitude trail. Moreover, La Punt Chamues-ch is located at the beginning of a ruggedly romantic
secret. The Val Chamuera is considered the most primeval valley in all of the Engadin. And on the
Alp Serlas, there is no kiosk to attract visitors, but rather an indescribable feeling of happiness evoked
by the beautiful, unspoilt nature.
There it stands, on the Piz Kesch, at 2500 m above sea level, proud, burnished by the sun, and rich in
spectacular views: the Es-cha Hut is legendary. Some of the most beautiful tours pass by this spot. And if
you were to believe the entries in the visitors’ book, the hut certainly lives up to its claim of “a haven
in the storm”. Even more impressive is a visit there when the sun is shining. And according to statistics,
that happens on 322 days a year. The ascent from Madulain, this little village with its 173 inhabitants, its
typical Engadin houses and its carefully fostered Romansh culture, takes 2½ hours. It enjoys an idyllic
setting by the River Inn, far removed from the rest of the world and basking in the sun. It treats inlineskaters,
horse-riders and hikers to a network of varying routes. And although it appears to be rather shy,
it still knows how to impress: for example, with the Guardaval ruins dating from the 13th century, the
largest castle complex in the Upper Engadin.
Even in this tradition-conscious village with its 1200 inhabitants, time has not stood still; thanks to the
beautifully appointed 18-hole golf course, an attractive inline skating route (including an inline school
and equipment hire), and an abundance of hiking and biking possibilities, this picturesque resort is
perfectly equipped to also cater to the needs of tourists in the future. Vibrant, modern dabs of colour
are provided by the Hotel Castell, with its sensuous hamam and original Dorta restaurant. Culture
vultures will be enchanted by the historic village centre and the proud patrician buildings, such as the
Chesa Planta, which are particularly well preserved. Lovers of seductive aromas are in heaven at the
highest-lying coffee-roasting plant in Europe – and can also learn more about the history of coffee at
the Caferama Badilatti. Families feel at home simply because here children find the most important
thing of all in unlimited abundance – an intact nature that is invariably filled with surprises.
Six hundred inhabitants, every second one of whom speaks Rhaeto-Romanic. An intact historic village
centre that exudes an irresistible, pri-meval charm. A culture that is strongly rooted in its Romanic
origins. And right on the doorstep, nature that is so unique that much of it is officially protected.
Although over the last decades the tiny hamlet situated at the gateway to the Swiss National Park has
considerably gained in importance as a tourist resort, it has still managed to preserve its awareness
for local traditions in a relaxed manner. Here, the Engadin way of life is not simply celebrated, but
actively lived to the full. S-chanf lies at the entrance to the beautiful Val Trupchun, the most ruggedly
beautiful valley in all of Europe; it is the departure point for lengthy hikes to Livigno, a stopover location
along the former packhorse trail to Davos, and the site of the finish of the Engadin Inline Marathon.
ZERNEZ
This resort is both the gateway to the Swiss National Park and the ideal base for exploring the fascinating
region of Switzerland bordering Italy and Austria. The undisputed top attraction here is Switzerland’s only
national park, whose 170 square kilometres harbour an exceptional wealth of alpine animal and plant
life in a wild and untouched mountain landscape. It is the country’s largest natural reserve – as well as
its most spectacular. As well as being the gateway to the national park, this attractive Engadin village
is home to its visitor centre, open year round. Zernez also offers an excellent range of tourist facilities,
including the relaxing and fun-filled family/wellness pool, mini-golf, and a new playground. Stretching
out from the resort is a fabulous network of footpaths and bike trails; active visitors can also tackle the
three Nordic Walking trails, and the “Vita-Parcous” exercise trail in the forest.
IN LAIN HOTEL CADONAU **** (BRAIL)
IN LAIN means “of wood”, but it is also a metaphor for what makes this hotel
special: nature, warmth, cosiness and a sense of wellbeing. An exceptional
atmosphere, and personal service – that’s the IN LAIN Hotel Cadonau in Brail.
HOTEL ACLA FILLI ***
Terms of Contract and General Conditions
Campsites, General Terms and Contitions Page 81
This brochure was compiled by the Tourism Organisation Engadin St. Moritz on behalf of, and in the name of,
the service providers – hotels, airlines, etc. – listed therein.
01
Scope of these General Terms and Conditions
These General Terms and Conditions govern
the legal relationship between you and the
other party/parties to your contract. If you
book one of the services or packages offered
by the hotels and/or other service providers
directly, your contract will be with the said
service provider or providers, even if you place
your booking through the Tourism Organisation
Engadin St. Moritz. In such cases, the
Tourism Organisation Engadin St. Moritz acts
as an agent only. In the case of services and
packages provided by the Tourism Organisation
Engadin St. Moritz in its own name, however,
your contract will be with the Tourism Organisation
Engadin St. Moritz.
02
Conclusion of contract and performance
Only when the booking office confirms your
booking without any provisions do you have
a legally binding contract with the service
provider. If the same booking office offers you
other services and packages which are not
listed in a publication of the Tourism Organisation
Engadin St. Moritz, then these General
Terms and Conditions shall not apply. The
scope of performance in such a case will be
evident from the order confirmation and the
description provided. Unless stated otherwise
in the description, your trip will begin at the
hotel or other accommodation booked.
03
Prices and terms of payment
All prices are quoted in Swiss francs. Unless
otherwise agreed in your booking or in the
booking confirmation, the price of your trip
shall be payable in full upon booking. If the
price is not paid in full by the date due, the
other party to the contract shall be entitled to
withhold performance, to withdraw from the
contract and to demand the cancellation costs
listed in No. 5. Please note that if you book
your trip through a different booking office,
such as a travel agent, this booking office may
charge you extra to cover the costs of the ser-
vices provided (consultancy, reservations, etc.).
04
Price and programme changes
The service providers and Tourism Organisation
Engadin St. Moritz are entitled to change the
description of performance and prices for as
long as the contract has not yet been signed.
You will be informed of this in your booking.
Even after the contract has been signed, prices
can still be increased right up to three weeks
prior to the beginning of your trip, but only
if the transport or accommodation costs, the
charges for certain services, or the exchange
rate have increased. The price of your trip will
be raised commensur ably in such a case. The
programme and scope of performance may
also have to be changed owing to unforeseen
circumstances. Should any of the essential
features of your trip change significantly and if
you cannot be offered an appropriate alternative,
you shall then have the right to cancel
your booking. Price increases of more than
10% count as a significant change. Unforeseen
and unavoidable events may necessitate a
change of programme or itinerary even after
your trip has commenced. Your service provider
will endeavour to provide an appropriate
alternative in such cases.
05
Changes or cancellations requested by you
If you wish to change your booking or to
cancel your trip, you must notify the booking
office of this directly. Any travel documents
you have already received must be returned to
the booking office at the same time. A service
charge of CHF 60.– per person, max. CHF 120.–
per order, will be levied for cancellations and
changes (affecting names of travellers, dates,
accommodation or additional services, etc.).
Please note that this charge will always be
levied in the event of a change of date. If you
cancel your trip or change your booking (name,
date, accommodation, additional services,
etc.) less than 31 days prior to your departure,
you will also be liable for the following costs
as a percentage of the total cost of your trip:

30% of the package price;

50% of the package price;

80% of the package price;

of no-show
100% of the package price;
The critical date is that on which the booking
office receives notice of your intentions; if
that is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday,
the next working day shall apply.
06
Late arrival or early departure of your
own accord
You are responsible for arriving on time.
Should you arrive late, you cannot claim a
refund for any services you have missed
owing to your late arrival. Should you depart
early, you cannot claim a refund for the
remainder of your trip.
07
Early departure or exclusion occasioned
by the service provider
The service provider is entitled to end the
service/trip prematurely in the event of
unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances such
as would render its performance of contract
impossible, extremely difficult or dangerous
for those taking part. Should an appropriate
alternative prove impossible in the event of
force majeure, the service provider shall be
exempted from its obligation to perform. Your
claim to a refund in such cases shall be limited
to unlawful enrichment only. The service
provider can exclude participants from the trip
This brochure has been compiled on
behalf of the tourist service providers
named within, in accordance with
information supplied by them. Your
contractual partner is specified in the
relevant entry, and is responsible for
the proper provision of any services
booked. Many service providers operate
their own general terms of business that
define contractual relations with you
and specify the liability of the provider.
These general terms of business are
binding for you when you make a booking.
Prices and services described in this
brochure may be changed at any time.
You will be informed about any such
changes at the time of making a booking.
Outdoor activities: these activities
may be cancelled or broken off at any
time if weather conditions or other
circumstances require. You may book
services direct with the relevant provider
or via Engadin St. Moritz. If you book
an activity via Engadin St. Moritz,
the latter is dealing purely as an intermediary
between you and the service
provider. Your contract is direct with
the provider of the service booked. In
case of disagreement or any question of
liability, etc., you should refer direct
to the relevant service provider. Engadin
St. Moritz is not your contractual
partner, and accepts no responsibility
for provision of the service booked.
Only Swiss law is applicable. Any disputes
arising hereunder will be settled
before a competent court of law in
St. Moritz, Switzerland.
