By plane Engadin St. Moritz boasts the highest-altitude airport in Europe. As 

it has customs facilities, Engadin Airport can accommodate direct international 

flights. A charter service links the Engadin with national and international

By car A well-developed network of roads allows you to travel to the Engadin 

from anywhere in Switzerland, Germany or Austria. From within Switzerland 

drive via Chur and the Julier Pass or Albula Pass, via Davos and the Flüela Pass 

or via Klosters by car-transporter service through the Vereina tunnel (trains 

every half-hour). From Germany and Austria travel via Landeck, and from Italy 

via the Maloja Pass, the Bernina Pass or the Ofen Pass.

Heaven for hikers 

The high valley of the Upper Engadin with its varied 580-kilometre (360-mile) 

network of trails is a dream destination for hikers. The contrasts that characterise 

this region are bewitching: gently sloping hills draped with lush alpine 

meadows stand close by mighty glaciers and towering snow-capped peaks. 

The idyllic trails in the valley, along the famous Engadin lakes, are particularly 

well suited to families with young children, as they take pushchairs comfortably. 

Those preferring something more ambitious can make for one of the four 

hiking areas served by funiculars, cable cars, chairlifts and gondolas: Corviglia/ 

Piz Nair, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza and Muottas Muragl/Alp Languard. 

All offer delightful hikes high up, with spectacular panoramic views. 

Walking fun for everyone 

Day walks, multi-day tours and special hikes, with or without a guide – the 

Upper Engadin has unforgettable experiences to suit everyone who enjoys being 

active on holiday. You can experience the extraordinary world of glaciers and 

their fascinating contrasts up close on an impressive glacier hike on the Bernina 

massif. The guided excursions last for around five hours. Another unforgettable 

experience for the adventurous is the so-called Bernina Trek. This spectacular 

trail can be tackled by walkers in good physical shape in seven days. The cultural 

highlights of the Engadin, meanwhile, are the focus of the various cultural 

walks on offer. Expert guides lead visitors in the footsteps of the philosopher 

Friedrich Nietzsche or the painter Giovanni Segantini, or along the trail of the 

valley’s art treasures. The region’s gastronomic delights, in turn, are waiting to 

be discovered – and savoured – on the Via Gastronomica from the Furtschellas 

top station down to the delightful Val Fex. The hike lasts anything from two to 

five hours, depending on the route chosen.

Suggestions for great hikes 

Via Engiadina panoramic hike Anyone who walks the delightful Via Engiadina 

gets to experience the whole sunny valley from Maloja to Zernez, with all its 

contrasts. The five-day, contrast-filled tour leads from Maloja via Grevasalvas 

to St. Moritz, over Alp Muntatsch to Samedan, across the foot of the Albula Pass 

to Zuoz, and ends in Zernez. 

Corvatsch middle station–Val Roseg–Pontresina This varied, mediumgrade 

walk takes about four hours, and leads over imposing slabs of rock, across 

romantic flower-filled meadows and along fragrant forest paths. Along the way 

hikers have wonderful views of the Piz Roseg and the Piz Bernina. Idyllic picnic 

spots, as well as the Fuorcla Surlej hut, make perfect places to rest and linger. 

Muottas Muragl–Segantini hut A short funicular ride from the valley up to 

Muottas Muragl leads to the start of this beautiful mountain walk, which has 

the Bernina massif – with the Piz Palü and Piz Bernina – as a magnificent backdrop. 

Well-made and clearly marked paths climb to 2,730 metres (8,957ft) and 

the celebrated Segantini hut, where the painter Giovanni Segantini died. From 

this magnificent viewpoint, the whole Engadin and its lakes seem to lie at your 

feet. 

Morteratsch–Boval hut This walk offers a magnificent close-up experience 

of a spectacular glacier landscape. Starting at the Rhaetian Railway station at 

Morteratsch, the trail climbs towards the Morteratsch Glacier and up to the 

Boval hut, one of seven Swiss Alpine Club huts in the region. The terrace offers 

fabulous views of the glacier. 

Val Bever, Val Chamuera and Val Susauna The lower stretch of the Upper 

Engadin offers idyllic side valleys that promise tranquillity and memorable 

encounters with nature. 

S-chanf–Val Trupchun This route leads from S-chanf via the Varusch hut into 

the Val Trupchun in the Swiss National Park, along a high trail through lush 

alpine meadows. Along the 3½-hour walk, hikers can observe impressive wildlife 

including ibex, bearded vultures and marmots.

MOUNTAIN RAILWAYS AND CABLEWAYS 

Diavolezza: The Diavolezza offers 

an unrivalled experience of the high 

Alps, with thrilling views of the 

spectacular Bernina massif. The 

glaciers, in all their other-worldly 

beauty, seem close enough to touch. 

Impressive glacier walks, as well as 

exciting hikes among the vertiginous 

peaks, are all on offer in this area. 

At the Berghaus Diavolezza mountain 

hotel, meanwhile, guests dine

Corviglia/Piz Nair: The captivating 

mountain on the doorstep of 

St. Moritz and Celerina is easily 

reached. Mountain bikers can carry 

their bikes up on three of the six lifts 

mentioned below for just CHF 3 per 

sector to access a biking paradise. As 

well as a multitude of mountain bike 

trails of all levels of difficulty, the 

area boasts numerous walks full of 

variety and some cosy mountain restaurants.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY 

The sun-blessed Upper Engadin offers families a very special experience of the 

alpine summer. In fact there is so much to discover and do here that you would 

need the whole summer to fit it all in.

Walks that welcome pushchairs too 

On the well-developed network of pushchair-accessible footpaths, families can 

enjoy leisurely walks in spectacular scenery even with the youngest children. 

Fun and adventure unlimited The Ferien(s)pass holiday programme running 

from mid-July to mid-August offers children aged 5–15 endless holiday fun for 

just CHF 20 a week. Pizza-baking, children’s climbing, painting, cheese-making 

up on the alp… with some 200 activities to choose from, holiday adventures are 

guaranteed for children of all ages. 

Activities for body, mind and taste buds The numerous theme trails and 

educational paths give parents a wonderful opportunity to encourage kids to 

learn in a fun-filled way. The playgrounds and natural play areas, meanwhile, 

promise family days filled with adventure. Sporty families can tackle the two 

inline skating trails together. As an alternative, or an interlude between the varied 

activities, nothing beats a picnic at one of the many idyllic barbecue sites. 

Entertainment and relaxation up on the mountain Among the most

TIPS FOR UNFORGETTABLE EXCURSIONS 

Since July 2008, the “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscape” has 

been part of UNESCO World Heritage. 

Bernina Express The Bernina Express is the most beautiful link between 

the alpine Engadin and the Mediterranean south, running from St. Moritz to 

the picturesque town of Tirano in the Valtellina. The spectacular ride takes in 

55 tunnels and 196 bridges, as well as gradients of up to 7 per cent – without 

the benefit of cog traction. The journey, past important cultural sites and 

the picturesque villages of the secluded Valposchiavo, is rich in contrasts. At 

first, the glaciers you see through the panoramic windows seem close enough 

to touch; soon after, you are gazing out on the palms of the sunny south. 

Glacier Express The slowest express train in the world – as the Glacier Express 

is affectionately known – offers a wonderfully close-up experience of the

Magical light in the idyllic high valley; an inspiring sense of space; and tremendous 

variety on offer – that’s the mountain summer in Engadin St. Moritz. 

Leisure riders, athletic bikers and keen explorers alike can discover the region 

on a variety of inspirational tours. From relaxed rides along the river Inn 

to challenging high-mountain single-track trails, the region’s 400km (250 

miles) of bike routes offer something for everyone. Meanwhile, the Engadin 

St. Moritz holiday region is constantly improving its trails and facilities for 

mountain bikers – of course in a sensitive way, in harmony with the glorious 

surrounding nature. Accessing the whole valley is easy, as riders can travel 

with their bikes on the trains of the Rhaetian Railway, the PostBuses and the 

Engadin Buses – and, best of all, on the funicular, cable car and gondola up 

to the magnificent terrain around the mountain of Corviglia/Marguns, from 

which a host of scenic trails fan out. A particular thrill is the ride from Corviglia 

through the soft rock formations at Alp Nova. Rounding off the experience 

are the Bike Hotels, which offer every comfort to bikers – and their bikes too. 

And thanks to the attractive Mountainbike Special package, riders can enjoy 

the glorious terrain of the Engadin at highly favourable rates. 

Tours to suit every taste 

The Upper Engadin’s extensive route network offers everything from beginner 

rides to alpine day-tours. The three-hour Suvretta Loop leads from Corviglia 

along the flank of the Piz Nair up to the Suvretta Pass – before a demanding

descent to the Val Bever, with a vertical drop of 960 metres (3,150ft). Rather 

more leisurely is a ride along the banks of the river Inn. Mountain bikers 

tackling the stretch from La Punt via Zuoz to Zernez can round off the day with 

a visit to the Swiss National Park or the Zernez Family Pool. Particularly varied 

and impressive is the scenic stretch of the Via Engiadina linking the Julier and 

Suvretta valleys, which offers magnificent views of the Upper Engadin lakes. 

A close-up experience of a spectacular glacier landscape, meanwhile, is to be 

had on the flowing trail from Pontresina through Morteratsch up to the Bernina 

Pass. The effort of the climb is rewarded with breathtaking views of the 

Bernina massif, and a thrilling descent into the Valposchiavo. Many other exciting 

mountain bike trails are waiting to be discovered; a new mountain bike 

map is available from local tourist information offices and from cable car and 

funicular stations. 

In good company 

Engadin Bike Tours offers everything from beginners’ courses, short rides and 

day tours of all levels of difficulty to bike weekends and week-long tours, as 

well as training in riding technique. Locally expert guides guarantee a carefree 

adventure. Anyone wishing to explore the superb terrain up on Corviglia with 

a qualified guide can book one of the daily guided bike tours. Experienced 

riders, meanwhile, can join a thrilling Frischi Bike Safari. This takes in numerous 

single-track trails against spectacular mountain backdrops, with 800 vertical 

metres (2,600ft) of climbs – and more than 5,000 vertical metres (16,500ft) of

GREENS TO DREAM ABOUT 

The golfing history of the Upper Engadin began as far back as 1889 with the first 

golf course in continental Europe, a 9-hole course laid out along Lake St. Moritz 

by Caspar Badrutt and a couple of British enthusiasts. This was followed in 

1891 by the 9-hole course in today’s Kulm Park. Today the region, with its outstanding 

and varied golf courses set against breathtaking mountain backdrops, 

attracts golfers from all over the world. 

Kulm Golf St. Moritz In the summer of 2001, the historic greens of the Kulm 

Park were redesigned by the St. Moritz golf architect Mario Verdieri and the 

Kulm Hotel. The new 9-hole Kulm Golf Course (par 27) is beautifully laid out on 

landscaped terrain, comprising short distances but offering challenges for 

every golfer. Beginners can enjoy their first golf experiences on the driving 

range, with 16 tees, and on the pitching and putting greens; the Kulm Golf 

Academy offers individual and group tuition for beginners as well as more 

advanced players. The course is reserved for experienced golfers. After a game, 

well-deserved refreshment can be ordered at the pleasant Chesa al Parc club 

restaurant.

Samedan golf course This classic golf course is the oldest in Switzerland, and 

one of the oldest in continental Europe. The 18-hole championship course 

(par 72) with a length of 6,217 metres (6,799 yards) offers thrills for every golfer. 

Refreshment is available at the clubhouse restaurant. The Engadin Golf Center 

academy offers individual and group tuition for all levels of ability. Carts and 

trolleys can be hired; caddies are available on request. 

Zuoz-Madulain golf course Just a short way down the valley lies the newest 

addition to Engadin’s golfing scene: the Zuoz-Madulain course, which opened 

in 2003. The 18-hole championship course (par 72) enjoys an idyllic alpine setting, 

and over a length of 6,007 metres (6,569 yards) offers great variety. Facilities 

include a restaurant, pro shop, the Engadin Golf Center academy providing 

individual and group tuition for all levels of ability, chipping and putting area, 

and driving range with 40 tees, part-covered. Carts and E-trolleys are available 

for hire. 

Sils/Margna golf course The practice course at the Romantik Hotel Margna in 

Sils-Baselgia, with its own academy golf course (par 6, 3 holes), driving range, 

putting and chipping green and pro shop with cafeteria, offers experienced 

and novice golfers alike outstanding training opportunities in an exclusive setting.

OTHER EXCITING SPORTS ADVENTURES 

High-altitude hikes and climbs 

Anyone keen on bagging an alpine summit or two is spoilt for choice: with 

numerous peaks of over 3,000 metres (10,000ft), the Upper Engadin offers an 

exceptional variety of high-mountain thrills. Those who prefer hiking boots 

and walking poles to crampons and an ice axe can opt for one of the many 

alpine hiking routes. Other exciting climbing experiences include the highrope 

challenge courses at Gitögla, the Piz Trovat via ferrata, and the 18 practice 

rock walls which attract not only experienced climbers but also beginners and 

active families. 

Nordic Walking 

Devotees of this increasingly popular activity – which makes use of dedicated 

Nordic Walking poles – will find an exceptional variety of trails: a network of 

225km (140 miles), stretching from Maloja to Zernez. Every day, guests can 

explore a new “Nordic Walking Park” until they have covered the whole valley.

Water sports to suit every taste 

Sailing The Upper Engadin offers unforgettable thrills for sailors thanks to the 

spectacular mountain setting at 1,800 metres (5,900ft) and the glorious wind 

conditions. Every day the Maloja wind builds up around noon to force 3–6, and 

only drops again at sunset. 

Windsurfing The play of wind on water is a sight guaranteed to set windsurfers’ 

pulses racing as they catch their first glimpse of beautiful Lake Silvaplana. 

A particular attraction comes in the form of Stand Up Paddle trips, on which you 

paddle, accompanied or unaccompanied, across the mirror-like surface of the 

Engadin lakes. 

Kitesurfing Among aficionados, the quality of kitesurfing on offer at Lake Silvaplana 

has long been an open secret. The dependable Maloja wind makes for 

speeds of up to 80kph (50mph), jumps as high as 30 metres (100ft), and flights 

lasting up to 20 seconds. 

Swimming Alongside the four large, well-known lakes along the main valley, 

the Upper Engadin has several smaller mountain lakes hidden in the forest that 

make for an inviting swim on hot summer days – such as the Lägh da Cavloc 

near Maloja, the Lej Nair, whose surface mirrors the massif of the Piz Corvatsch, 

the Lej Marsch, which lies just below the Lej Nair and the popular Lej da Staz, 

and the golf lakes just outside Samedan.

Weather and climate in the Engadin 

The Upper Engadin enjoys a dry, continental climate. Characteristics include 

low humidity and big variations in temperature between summer and winter, 

and between day and night. On fine days in summer, the Maloja wind begins 

to blow around midday and reaches speeds of 40kph (25mph) or more, bringing 

a refreshing coolness and creating excellent conditions for windsurfers, sailors 

and glider pilots. 

Glaciers in the Engadin At 7km (4 miles), the Morteratsch Glacier is the longest 

in the Engadin, and the tenth longest in Switzerland. About 160 years ago, 

during the Little Ice Age, it reached almost as far as today’s railway station. The 

mighty lateral moraines piled high with rock debris, which reveal the extent of 

the glacier in 1850, still dominate the flanks of the valley.

Captivating forests of larch and Swiss stone pine 

The delightful play of colours through the seasons of the gnarled larch trees is 

one of the characteristics of the Upper Engadin. The pale green shoots, golden 

pollen cones and red cone blossoms of spring give way in summer to luscious 

green cones and needles. In autumn, when the needles turn golden yellow, the 

whole valley is blanketed in gold. 

The Swiss stone pine can grow to be 1,400 years old, and is ideally adapted to 

the harsh winter climate. One of the oldest specimens in the Upper Engadin 

stands below Muottas da Schlarigna. The tree can withstand temperatures 

ranging from +40 to -47 Celsius (+104 to -40 Fahrenheit), and as a result dominates 

the upper limits of mountain forests. It also has medicinal properties: 

its scent has a relaxing, soothing effect on the body. 


The Swiss National Park, covering an area of 170 sq. km (66 sq. miles), is the 

country’s only national park and comprises a particularly impressive stretch of 

untouched alpine landscape. It is home to 30 species of mammal and more 

than 100 species of bird, as well as an astonishing variety of plant life – more 

than 650 species in all.

MALOJA 

Maloja is the only community in the Upper Engadin that is officially recognised as a family resort with a 

“Families welcome” label. And the village on the pass bordering on to the primeval Bergaglia region 

is doing everything it can to live up to its family-friendly reputation. It runs a second-hand shop for 

children’s articles, guests can book a babysitter via the Tourist Information Office, and there are pizzamaking

Beautifully adorned farmhouses and stately patrician houses from the 16th and 17th centuries stand 

majestically in the village. The Albertini buildings, with their Biedermeier façades looking out onto the 

streets, and the imposing Sandoz House, with its hall-like passage leading into the middle of the

There it stands, on the Piz Kesch, at 2500 m above sea level, proud, burnished by the sun, and rich in 

spectacular views: the Es-cha Hut is legendary. Some of the most beautiful tours pass by this spot. And if 

you were to believe the entries in the visitors’ book, the hut certainly lives up to its claim of “a haven

Six hundred inhabitants, every second one of whom speaks Rhaeto-Romanic. An intact historic village

the service providers – hotels, airlines, etc. – listed therein.

Scope of these General Terms and Conditions 

These General Terms and Conditions govern 

the legal relationship between you and the 

other party/parties to your contract. If you 

book one of the services or packages offered 

by the hotels and/or other service providers 

directly, your contract will be with the said 

service provider or providers, even if you place 

your booking through the Tourism Organisation 

Engadin St. Moritz. In such cases, the 

Tourism Organisation Engadin St. Moritz acts 

as an agent only. In the case of services and 

packages provided by the Tourism Organisation 

Engadin St. Moritz in its own name, however, 

your contract will be with the Tourism Organisation 

Engadin St. Moritz.

Conclusion of contract and performance 

Only when the booking office confirms your 

booking without any provisions do you have 

a legally binding contract with the service 

provider. If the same booking office offers you 

other services and packages which are not 

listed in a publication of the Tourism Organisation 

Engadin St. Moritz, then these General 

Terms and Conditions shall not apply. The 

scope of performance in such a case will be 

evident from the order confirmation and the 

description provided. Unless stated otherwise 

in the description, your trip will begin at the 

hotel or other accommodation booked.

Prices and terms of payment 

All prices are quoted in Swiss francs. Unless 

otherwise agreed in your booking or in the 

booking confirmation, the price of your trip 

shall be payable in full upon booking. If the 

price is not paid in full by the date due, the 

other party to the contract shall be entitled to 

withhold performance, to withdraw from the 

contract and to demand the cancellation costs 

listed in No. 5. Please note that if you book 

your trip through a different booking office, 

such as a travel agent, this booking office may 

charge you extra to cover the costs of the ser- 

vices provided (consultancy, reservations, etc.).

Price and programme changes 

The service providers and Tourism Organisation 

Engadin St. Moritz are entitled to change the 

description of performance and prices for as 

long as the contract has not yet been signed. 

You will be informed of this in your booking. 

Even after the contract has been signed, prices 

can still be increased right up to three weeks 

prior to the beginning of your trip, but only 

if the transport or accommodation costs, the 

charges for certain services, or the exchange 

rate have increased. The price of your trip will 

be raised commensur ably in such a case. The 

programme and scope of performance may 

also have to be changed owing to unforeseen 

circumstances. Should any of the essential 

features of your trip change significantly and if 

you cannot be offered an appropriate alternative, 

you shall then have the right to cancel 

your booking. Price increases of more than 

10% count as a significant change. Unforeseen 

and unavoidable events may necessitate a 

change of programme or itinerary even after 

your trip has commenced. Your service provider 

will endeavour to provide an appropriate 

alternative in such cases.

Changes or cancellations requested by you 

If you wish to change your booking or to 

cancel your trip, you must notify the booking 

office of this directly. Any travel documents 

you have already received must be returned to 

the booking office at the same time. A service 

charge of CHF 60.– per person, max. CHF 120.– 

per order, will be levied for cancellations and 

changes (affecting names of travellers, dates, 

accommodation or additional services, etc.). 

Please note that this charge will always be 

levied in the event of a change of date. If you 

cancel your trip or change your booking (name, 

date, accommodation, additional services, 

etc.) less than 31 days prior to your departure, 

you will also be liable for the following costs 

as a percentage of the total cost of your trip:

The critical date is that on which the booking 

office receives notice of your intentions; if 

that is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, 

the next working day shall apply.

Late arrival or early departure of your 

own accord 

You are responsible for arriving on time. 

Should you arrive late, you cannot claim a 

refund for any services you have missed 

owing to your late arrival. Should you depart 

early, you cannot claim a refund for the 

remainder of your trip.

Early departure or exclusion occasioned 

by the service provider 

The service provider is entitled to end the 

service/trip prematurely in the event of 

unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances such 

as would render its performance of contract 

impossible, extremely difficult or dangerous 

for those taking part. Should an appropriate 

alternative prove impossible in the event of 

force majeure, the service provider shall be 

exempted from its obligation to perform. Your 

claim to a refund in such cases shall be limited 

to unlawful enrichment only. The service 

provider can exclude participants from the trip 

if their behaviour or omissions justify such a 

step. In such a case, the cost of the package 

shall still be due in full and there shall be no 

refunds. Nor may the participants affected 

claim damages of any kind.

Liability 

The Tourism Organisation Engadin St. Moritz 

and the service provider shall be liable only 

for the services they themselves render and to 

the extent provided for by law, although they 

shall not be liable for negligence on their own 

part or on the part of their vicarious agents. 

There shall be no liability for valu ables, cam- 

eras, video cameras and photographic equipment, 

fur coats and other expensive items 

of clothing, mobile phones, credit cards and 

cash or for the unlawful use of the same. For 

packages, liability for anything other than 

personal injury shall be limited to twice the 

cost of the package. Here, too, the terms 

governing liability for valuables shall apply. 

Liability in all cases shall be limited to the loss 

or damage actually suffered. There shall be 

no liability for lost holiday time, frustration, 

etc. Extracontractual liability shall be limited 

to that provided for by law.

Travel insurance 

Participants are strongly urged to take out 

travel insurance to cover them in the event of 

cancellation or early departure, incl. such as 

might be necessitat ed by accident or sickness.

Applicable law and jurisdiction 

Swiss law shall apply to the exclusion of all 

others. Any disputes shall be settled in 

St. Moritz, Switzerland, to the exclusion of 

any other courts of law.

may be cancelled or broken off at any

provider. Your contract is direct with

partner, and accepts no responsibility

Only Swiss law is applicable. Any disputes
