A NOTE FROM
YEA! Program Manager
Justine Paradiso
I first learned about the Young Entrepreneurs
Academy (YEA!) when I started at the
Chamber in July of 2016. As I started learning
about the program, the more excited I
became thinking about how I could be part
of impacting students lives in such a
long-term way. This past year was the
Dubuque Area Chambers fourth year with
the program and my second, so really, YEA!
Dubuque is still in its infancy.
For those who have not yet heard of the
program, let me provide you with some
background information. Developed at the
University of Rochester in 2004, the Young
Entrepreneurs Academy has graduated over
4,000 students ages 11-18 across the country
who have started over 3,000 businesses
and social movements. Over the course of
25 weeks, YEA! teaches middle and high

school students how to start and run
their own real business or social movement.
Through this program, students
brainstorm business ideas, hear from
professionals in different fields, work with
mentors to write a business plan, and
pitch their ideas to a panel of investors
who give out real money to fund their
businesses (think Shark Tank). As you can
see, there are a lot of moving parts to
running this program. If it takes a village
to raise a child, then it takes an entire
city to help one start a business.
This program would be nothing without
the volunteers who give their time and
talents as guest speakers, field trip hosts,
mentors, and instructors. I can’t say thank
you enough to all these individuals! We
couldn’t have a YEA! program if we didnt
have students to fill the class, and
recruiting would be nearly impossible
without support from our local schools.
Thank you for allowing me to come into
classes to speak to students, sit at tables
during registration, or emailing information
out to students and parents on my
behalf. By helping me share the YEA!
message with our area students, you are
assisting me in opening the world of
entrepreneurship to them at a young age.
In closing, I want to give a big shout out
to the amazing students in our community.
These talented young adults have
been a privilege to work with. There’s
nothing more amazing to me than to see
that Ah-Ha moment when they come up
with an idea that is as unique as they
are. The students in YEA! are creative,
innovative, and dedicated individuals.
Being a student today is a juggling act,
between school, homework, and extracurricular
activities, there is always something
happening. The students in the
program voluntarily add three hours of
class time into their already jammed
packed week because they want to continue
learning! The YEA! program is fun,
with lots of creative thinking and problem
solving, but starting a business is not
easy. Students in the program must be
resourceful in how they work out all the
different aspects of their business plan.
They work as individuals to develop their
own business ideas, but also collaborate
with their classmates seeking input on
certain issues. We treat these students
not as kids, but as professionals, and
they in turn treat each other as
colleagues rather than classmates. It’s
been inspiring to see these students in
action, and watch skills develop in them
over the course of our classes. When I
look at the students who have been part
of YEA! Dubuque, I see a bright future
for our community and know we’re in
good hands. I look forward to seeing
what our alumni continue to do, and
what ideas come
forth from future
YEA! students.
Innovation &
Entrepreneurs at
and the YEA! Tradeshow
Innovation and Entrepreneurs
at Technori Dubuque and the
YEA! Tradeshow on June 14
[Dubuque, Iowa] Technori
Dubuque will be hosting its third
start-up showcase on Thurs., June
14 at Hotel Julien Dubuque,
beginning with a cocktail reception
from 5:30-6:30 PM and the
Technori and Techbrew events to
follow. Technori's mission is to
create momentum for startups by
building a community around
tech and innovation that enables
early stage companies to get in
front of members of the community
to connect with their first
customers, employees and investors.
Networking, innovation, and
sharing Iowa tech startup stories
is what this event is all about.
Technori Dubuque will begin at

6:30 PM and will feature newly launched
tri-state technology-based start-ups to
present their ideas and market their new
businesses in front of members of the
start-up and entrepreneurial community.
Each start-up will be given five minutes to
present what their business is and how it
benefits and affects the public. Start-up
participants hope to gain traction and jump
start their investment and shine a spotlight
on what is happening in Iowa and the
tri-states region. Founded in 2010, Technori
is the world’s startup showcase. To date,
300+ companies have presented at over 75
events and gone on to raise more than
$260,000,000 in venture capital. In fact,
Technori startups now employ over 2,500
people and have gone onto become some
of the top accelerators in the world. Erin
Dragotto, Vice President of Development at
the National Mississippi River Museum &
Aquarium, was involved in Technori based
in Chicago, and saw the opportunity to
bring the event to Dubuque, teaming up
with Emily Goodmann, Assistant Professor
of Communications at Clarke University, to
help make the event a success. During the
cocktail hour leading up to the presentations,
this year’s Young Entrepreneurs
Academy (YEA!) students will have trade
show booths set up on the mezzanine of
Hotel Julien to promote their businesses
that they have been working on since
October 2017. This is the big launch for
the students in the program who have
gone through the process of brainstorming
ideas, writing a business plan, and presenting
their ideas to investors. The students
will have items showcasing their businesses
and some will even have products for sale.
The trade show is from 5-6:30 PM and is
free to attend. This event is made possible
by the support of Dupaco Community
Credit Union, BizTimes, and Fourge Social.
The event is hosted by the Dubuque Area
Chamber of Commerce.
What made you choose Dubuque as the location
for your business?
I'm originally from Dubuque, I came home to
be closer to family.
What does your business do and what need
does this meet in the community?
I sell Gelato, chocolates, wine and coffee. I
also have live music on the weekends.
Dubuque has come a long way over the years.
Chocolaterie Stam and its offerings are a nice
compliment to those changes, it's a nice fit for
the new lower Main Street ambiance.
Who started the company?
Chocolaterie Stam as a chocolate company has its
roots in Amsterdam over 100 years ago and was
introduced to the U.S. by Ton Stam, a 5th generation
Stam. I believe in 2010 the location in
Dubuque opened. Renee is the 3rd owner of the
Dubuque location.
Why is it important to your company to be a
Chamber member?
The Chamber, as I have discovered, is willing to
assist in any way they can in helping to expose
new business, which is an invaluable resource
when just getting your feet wet in a new community.
How long have you been in business?
I started June 1st of 2017
Currently a one-person operation

1988.
Number of employees:
It varies, over the course of the year up wards
to 75 staff.
Hours of operation (for each office):
7:30 am – 5:30 pm
What does your company do and what need
does this meet in the community?
We serve the Dubuque community schools and
families with before and after school and
summer programs. Meeting social and academic
needs of students in title one
schools. Serving over 500
children annually. We also
supply over 1600 children
with much needed
school supplies every
year in the Apples for
Student school supply
program.
Why is it important to your company to be
Chamber members?
We love the connection to our local businesses
and other non-profits. We can’t do the
work we love to do without the great partners
in the Dubuque Community. It isn’t just
about the amazing funding they provide to us,
but the great volunteers and partnerships we
have been able to create. Our kids know this
community loves them every time one of our
business partners visits or shares their skills.
